The Empty Bottle-Chicago, IL
January 19, 2008
Saturday’s show featured Bang Bang with La Scala and Let’s Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop. This was my first time at The Empty Bottle & absolutely will not be the last. I don’t know where to start, I loved just about everything about this bar, from the cheap $2 PBR to the random lost & found décor of photo booth pics and old truck & CPD doors hanging on the walls. The stage size was perfect and sound system was awesome!
Despite the Chicago winter in full force die hard fans made the journey to The Empty Bottle. As usual Bang Bang put on a fabulous show. The set was full of un-dying energy and lots of sweat. The set list consisted plenty of newer music. Happily they came back on for one more song per the crowds request. They played one of my favorites Electric Sex (Down on the dance floor).
Where was the band formed?
J & G: Chicago
How do you like the music scene in Chicago?
J & G: Like it!
J: Like it a lot, that’s why we haven’t left. There are a lot of great bands here & we are happy to be a part of it.
What other city do you enjoy playing the most?
G: Hot Springs AK, Chapel Hill,
J & G: Brooklyn
G: Reno NV, Albuquerque New Mexico, Juarez Mexico tops them all, it is the funest place to play!A lot of good things happen in Mexico
J: A lot of good things happen there in Mexico…a lot of things
G: We want to do a Mexico Tour
What got you into music?
G: I played violin since the 4th grade
J: Kiss made me want to play in a band, as dorky as that is, I think that depends on who you ask. Kiss is not a very good band so because of that a lot of people tend to look down on that as an answer, but it’s the truth. Gene Simmons was spitting blood. I was reading comics at the same time and was like man that looks cool, it made me want to play guitar. So I picked up a guitar and that got me started.
How long ago was B! B! formed?
G: 5 ½ years ago. It was formed 5 ½ years ago however, 5 years ago like last week was our first show. We have been playing 5 years. January 6th was our first show.
Is there any meaning behind your name?
J: Next Question!
What is your favorite part about performing?
G: People starring back at you
J: People looking at me, I like when people stare
G: I like when people stare too. I always describe playing as the sex, the practices are the foreplay. The performance is the sex.
J: It’s like your going all the way, every time you have a show it’s like your going all the way
G: You get a little nervous, your heart races Thea from Let’s Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop: It’s like you’re a prostitute because people pay to do it.
G & J: And people pay, it’s like we are hookers of rock
G: Did you guys pay to get it in?
G: You paid for prostitutes
J: You are gonna get an extra special show
What are your favorite songs to perform?
G: She Came From Outer Space
J: I like that one a lot, I don’t know that changes
G: It does change every couple of months because as you write new songs
J: It’s usually the new song, whatever is the newest song is usually what I’m into the most at the time to play because it’s something fresh for me.
G: All Messed Up is really fun for me to play because I don’t have any vocals on it, I get to go play with the drummer.
What artists are you listening to right now?
G & J: Kate Nash
J: White Magic, MIAG: Yeah, A Lot of MIA, Iron Maiden, The Cure
J: The Smith’s, I usually put my iPod on shuffle so I can listen, I like to hear the ways songs blend into each other like completely random. I like to hear a Cocorosie song go into an Iron Maiden song, that’s a very weird experienceIs there anything else you would like to add?
J: Come check us out! Because we’ll make sure you have a good time. Especially if you like to drink and get drunk. Cause then no matter what is happening your gonna have a good time & we especially want you at our show then.
G: Viva La Mexico!
J: Check us out for more fun at myspace.com/bangbangband or bangbangband.com
We would like to thank Jack and Gretta for their time answering our questions. Reading this interview does not compare to how much fun we had recording it. Hopefully we can do this again.
