I read a comment on Myspace today and had a really great laugh. This is what happens when people don’t A) Proofread B) Use Spell check C) and make up their own words: Read Carefully! Who can find the mistake?

“I’ve been doing some analization lately, not only on myself but on my friends as well.”

No lie, really pulled it off Myspace. I hope you all have a great night and please don’t over Analize this.

John Barleycorn
Schaumburg, IL

johnbarleycorn

Located just west of Woodfield Mall, Barleycorn opened their doors on March 14. I have heard mixed reviews so I figured I would check it out to see what all the hub-bub was about. I heard it was ridiculous to get into so I thought I would wait out the novelty of a new bar.

This place is huge! It has 2 stories filled with flat screen TVs on every wall, the lower level consists of bar to the left & dinning on the right. The second floor is a big dance floor with three monster bars, a 5 foot stage, and a dozen booths for bottle service along either side. There is an outdoor patio that will be very convenient this summer. The sound system & lights are superb! There is a catwalk that starts backstage & goes over head leading to the soundboard & DJ booth.

Kenny Chesney
Coors Amphitheater - Chula Vista, CA
5/29/08

It was a another beautiful evening in Southern California and the crew stepped out for a night with Kenny Chesney and Leann Rimes. As we walked through security there were signs plastered all over stating “Leanne Rimes will not be performing due to illness.” There were fans that squawked and there were fans that were there just for Chesney. It was quite hilarious to hear the Leanne Rimes fans just complain about her not being there, some really put up a fuss. It’s even better watching them put up a fuss with the people who have absolutely no control over the situation.

We walked in as “The Next Big Star” aka the opener aka Robert Corona was midway through his set. I have to be honest I wasn’t really paying attention to him, I was making new friends around me at this point because me seat was upgraded. As Mr. Corona finished his set he announced that Kenny Chesney was up next. It was odd to hear that because it was only 8:30pm. I knew we were all in for a very special treat. Rumors were running around that Uncle Kracker would play a set to fill in for Leanne. I would rather have Sammy Hagar fill in but that wasn’t up to me.

Stumble Upon is my friend. Yes, I love this browser application. There are times when I get bored and just start stumbling and come across some of the funniest things.

This one happens to be music related. The artist/comedian is Stephen Lynch and the song is called “What if That Guy from Smashing Pumpkins Lost his Car Keys?”

I highly recommended checking this out especially if you know what Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins sounds like or if you just want a good laugh.

Phish Reunion?

phish

Phish reunited this month at the Jammys in New York to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award, but this may not be the last time we will see all four members of Phish on stage together.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Trey Anastasio may have dropped some serious hints on a possible Phish reunion. “When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life. And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”

Anastasio was sentenced to probation on charges of possessing painkillers without a prescription, which had been reduced to a misdemeanor after he completed a drug treatment program.

Motion City Soundtrack

Motion City Soundtrack milwaukee 5

Out of all the concerts I have been to in my life (hundreds by now!), I have NEVER seen a band care about their fans as much as Motion City Soundtrack. During their performance at the Milwaukee stop on the Honda Civic Tour, the band stopped midsong not once, but TWICE, to help a fallen fan in the crowd. The frontman, lead singer and guitarist for the band, Justin, stopped singing and playing in the middle of two different songs, once near the beginning of their set and again towards the middle, to make sure a fan was helped up and not trampled. I was genuinely surprised that he cared that much. I mean, that’s what happens at shows with a GA floor - kids get mushed together and fall down, get hit in the face by elbows, have crowd-surfers land on their heads, etc. It’s what you should expect if braving the pit. But usually bands don’t see the dangerous stuff happen, or if they do, the show must go on, injured kids or not…so hats off to MCS for caring about the little people!!!

super-mario-bros

I felt it was about time to cover the most classic game of all classic console games: Super Mario Brothers by Nintendo. This game was released by Nintendo for the NES and changed my life in 1985. I guess that completely dates me, eh? The funny thing, and the reason I decided to cover Mario Bros. this week, is because it’s so absolutely classic that people think of these songs all the time and don’t realize they’re doing it. Amazingly, this game only had four tracks within it!

Long Blondes w/Drug Rug, Bang Bang
Logan Square Auditorium - Chicago, IL
5/28/08

“The Logan Square Auditorium lends itself to great shows and that certainly proved true Saturday night.”

The Chicago three-piece, Bang Bang, got things rolling Saturday, May 24, at the semi-crowded Logan Square Auditorium. Bang Bang’s vocal duties were shared between the soulful, riot grrl Gretta Fine, who aimed for a Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Sleater-Kinney sound, and Jack Flash’s more straight-man, rock and roll approach, not unlike the Hives. If you prefer the band’s self-proclaimed genre, however, then it sounded like “Chicago’s Premier Sex Rock Band.” Among about eight tunes, the back-to-back new ones sounded the best, especially the one about “the hot boys.” Nothing was too outstanding; although their eccentric drumming is worth checking out, which you can do by heading over to their MySpace if you’re interested.

Drug Rug Interview
icon1 Joseph O'Fallon | icon2 Interviews, Music | icon4 05 25th, 2008| icon31 Comment »

Outside the Logan Square Auditorium, 15 minutes before show start on Saturday, May 24, I caught up with Cambridge, Massachusetts’ duo, Drug Rug. Despite my note-taking, our chat was about as normal and casual as it can get with a band, and our refreshing talk brought my appreciation level way up (in addition to my existing appreciation established from their excellent self-titled debut album).
