OK Go at Manifest 2008

Grant Park – Chicago, IL

OK Go Manifest 4

Chicago’s own OK Go headlined Columbia College’s Manifest 2008. For those not in the know, Manifest is Columbia’s annual spring Urban Arts Festival and Senior Showcase that takes place on Columbia’s South Loop campus. Every Manifest ends with a concert featuring a top national act, and for the most part, an act that hails from Chicago. Last year we had Lupe Fiasco and this year we brought in OK Go. Let me just say this, no other band in the history of Manifest has ever brought up ROBOTS on stage to dance to one of their songs while they played. Only at Columbia people…only at Columbia would this happen.

OK Go Manifest 3

The show kicked off at 8:00pm on the dot and the band rocked out in Grant Park for the next hour and 15 minutes. The concert took at the corner of Columbus and Balboa and was open to the public AND it was FREE! OK Go’s drummer, Dan, even has ties to Columbia – he attended the college for a year. Looking at how far the band has made it in their career, you can’t blame him for not sticking it out and getting a degree. I mean, the band has won a GRAMMY award for Best Short Form Music Video. Do you really need a Bachelor’s degree when you have a GRAMMY?! I don’t think so…

In the middle of the band’s set, three of the guys – Damian (vocals/guitar), Tim (bass) and Andy (guitar/keyboards) – did something completely unexpected to fans. They left the main stage and walked out into the middle of the crowd, stopping just before the sound booth to set up camp on a miniature sized stage (more like a tiny platform) and played an acoustic set comprised of a song or two. I LOVE when a band does this because it shows that they really care about their fans and the fans’ experience at their live shows. This way, even the audience members in the way back can get a glimpse of the band up close and personal. A few of my favorite bands, such as Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind and Coldplay have all done these intimate acoustic sets during their concerts.

OK GO manifest

OK Go performed their HUGE hit Here It Goes Again from their sophomore album, Oh No, right before they walked off stage before the encore. For those that aren’t familiar with the song, you may not realize it, but you do know this song. The band made a music video for the song featuring choreographed dance moves on treadmills. A phenomenon that generated 30 million hits across the world after being posted on YouTube. FYI: In the video, the bassist Tim is the one singing the lyrics, not the real lead singer, Damian (featured in the photo above). So don’t be surprised when watching the band perform live if the bass player is not singing the songs…

Check back soon for my interview with Damian and Tim from OK Go…

Sounds like a great show! It’s cool they did the acoustic thing, I love it when bands do that, too. I always wondered why the bassist sang in the videos when he’s never listed as the vocalist, I kept thinking maybe I was missing something. Im really interested in reading the interview now.
