House of Blues – Chicago, IL
The Switches are a Brit-pop band who’s U.S. debut album Lay Down the Law was released last March and are currently known for their single “Drama Queen”, which is also the theme song to MTV’s reality show “Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search For Elle Woods”. They’ve been around since 2006 but I can’t say that I’ve heard of them before a few weeks ago.
The Switches performed at the House of Blues on Thursday as a part of the Nylon Magazine Music Tour along with The Virgins, Be Your Own Pet and headliners She Wants Revenge.
They were the first openers of the night and went on pretty early at 6:00pm. They performed for a crowd of about 60 people, but they seemed excited nonetheless.
This wasn’t the first time they’ve been in Chicago but being an opener on a tour like this, it’s safe to assume that this was the first time most of the audience had heard of this band. With that, they did manage to capture a few people who I noticed half-way bobbing their heads along with the music. Personally however, I can’t say that I did the same.
The Switches have a loud pop-rock sound that reminded me of fellow Brit-rockers Hard Fi and funky guitar style almost like The Hives – except less energetic- and a few danceable rhythms.
Their performance was a regular rock show with nothing really notable for me to remember. I can’t pull one song (as they did not mention the names of them) or event that I can call impressive or worth mentioning.
I never let my taste in music interfere with my opinion of performance, so I won’t say that they were horrible by any means ……just a boring performance.
Maybe with time and once they build their audience, they’ll be better, but for now, I think I’ll pass on The Switches.
