Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
Humphrey’s by the Bay – San Diego, CA
It was a marvelous Monday night at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay. Humphrey’s is a smaller outdoor music venue that literally sits next to the bay. The sail boats docked at the port and the palm trees that lined the back of the stage made for a very intimate and appropriate setting for a night with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.
Robert Plant decided to hit the road with Alison Krauss to support their joint release of Raising Sand, a collaboration that brought together two highly respected musicians from different backgrounds. Raising Sand brings together the blues, country, and the sultry edge from Robert Plant and the soulful power of Alison Krauss.
Monday’s concert was played to a sold-out audience. The set was filled with material from Raising Sun but also included older blues tracks and country music.
Though there was not much movement on-stage, but Krauss and Plant’s stage presence was immense. Plant’s subtle nuances and physical movements engaged the audience for the entire night.
Alison’s voice was nothing but strong and soulful. Her voice was completely mesmerizing during “Trampled Rose.” You could feel that she put her entire self into the performance.
The chemistry on-stage between Plant and Krauss was fitting and had many moments where they looked at each other and laughed. The band was tight, and on Humphrey’s stage, I mean that both figuratively and literally. The producer of Raising Sand, T Bone Burnett, accompanied them on-stage playing guitar. He even lead a song himself as Alison and Robert listened from the sidelines.
It was great to hear songs from both of their repitoires as well as blues classics.
The Raising Sand Tour is one that is not to be missed.
