Hot Chip…Where’s the Salsa?

Hot Chip

Around 8:30 Sunday night, the synth-heavy electro-pop Hot Chip kicked off a two-night stint at the Metro. The visual duo, Growing, opened for them. Visual really isn’t my thing, I suppose if I were on acid it would be ‘wow’ but 100% sober, I just can’t get into it. Call me lame but I had the same reaction when I saw Yeasayer open for Man Man (coming to Bottom Lounge 10/18) earlier this year. -Actually, listening to them now it’s more intriguing…maybe I’ll give them another shot.

Sorry to deviate, there’s more about the actual show after the jump…

A little Tobacco but WHY?

tobacco Tobacco & Yeti?

Tobacco kicked off the night with some calm and collected electro beats. They were just a little too slow and not quite fast enough to groove to. Songs would usually start off with a promising beat but for some reason that would die out leaving me wanting more. The two DJ’s were fairly stationary the entire set but their video mash-ups, everything from Ron Jeremy style 80’s porn clips to some of Arnold Schwarzenegger bustin’ caps in people’s asses, were a great addition and ultimately saved the show for me. The last song brought out a Yeti that walked/crawled around the stage coupled with a video starring the same creature. The whole Yeti thing feels like it had a deeper meaning but I wasn’t interested enough to search for it.

Afterwards, indie-hoppers (that’s indie hip-hop and yes, I just made that up) WHY? took the stage captivating the crowd with their brilliantly abstract lyrics that focus more on imagery than any kind of story. The beautifully crafted lyrics, while absurd to many, did a great job painting zany pictures in my mind. For example, “The Hollows” has an especially colorful lyric, “In Berlin I saw two men fuck;in the dark corner of a basketball court;Just a slight jangle of pocket change pulsing” that puts me right there with him. I know that’s not particularly attractive to some of you but honestly, listen to that track and tell me it doesn’t get stuck in your head.

More after the jump…

AGAINST ME! FRONTMAN TOM GABEL LAUNCHES SOLO TOUR IN SUPPORT OF FORTHCOMING SOLO EP

“HEART BURNS” TO BE RELEASED BY SIRE RECORDS ON OCTOBER 28TH

GABEL TO POST ONE VIDEO PER WEEK ON MYSPACE

Tom Gabel will hit the road without his Against Me! bandmates on October 31st. Tom will be joined by Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Ben Nichols (Lucero), and Tim Barry (Avail) on the Revival Tour. The frontmen will trade off playing solo sets of their own songs as well as collaborating on each others material.

Gabel is launching the tour in support of his upcoming seven-song solo EP, entitled “Heart Burns,” which will be released on CD, digitally and on vinyl by Sire Records on October 28th. Inspired by the country’s current political and cultural landscape, Gabel began to write new songs in January. Due to the topical and timely subject matter, he wanted to release them around the upcoming Presidential election.

The centerpiece of the EP is “Anna Is A Stool Pigeon,” which Gabel wrote after reading about environmental activist Eric McDavid (www.supporteric.org) who was convicted in 2007 of conspiring to use explosives to damage corporate and government property after being implicated by an undercover FBI informant who posed as an activist. McDavid’s defense has argued that he was the victim of entrapment. He currently faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Travis Barker & DJ AM Released From Hospital

Posted by Yvette Casillas On September - 30 - 2008

According to US Magazine:

Travis Barker has been released from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, Usmagazine.com has confirmed.

Travis Barker was discharged from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital Monday morning, spokesperson Beth Frits told Us Monday afternoon. “He left in good condition.”

Travis, 32, had been recovering there for the past nine days after suffering second and third degree burns following a Learjet crash that killed four people.

DJ AM, the only other survivor, was released from the burn-center on Friday.

Despite burns on his torso and lower body, Barker has been “trying to stay upbeat,” his pal Bill Nosal recently told the Associated Press.

DJ AM, meanwhile, recently updated his Facebook page since his release. “Adam Goldstein is the luckiest guy alive,” he wrote in a status update on Friday.

From what I have heard Travis is being transferred to a California hospital to be closer to his family. He will be traveling by bus due to this traumatic accident. Travis will not be flying again anytime soon.

THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS’ NEW ALBUM

WHEN THE WORLD COMES DOWN

ARRIVES NOVEMBER 18th ON DGC/INTERSCOPE/DOGHOUSE

STREAM THE FIRST SINGLE “GIVES YOU HELL” ON IMEEM NOW!

The countdown is on. The All-American Rejects are scheduled to release their eagerly awaited third album WHEN THE WORLD COMES DOWN, on November 18th on DGC/Interscope/Doghouse. The new album follows-up the RIAA double-platinum Move Along, released July 2005. WHEN THE WORLD COMES DOWN is The All-American Rejects’ first project with veteran producer Eric Valentine, known for his work with multi-platinum artists Maroon 5, Smash Mouth, Good Charlotte, Queens Of the Stone Age, and more.

“Gives You Hell” has been chosen as the first single, and fans can now stream it for free on Imeem. Head over to http://www.imeem.com/theallamericanrejects/music/UP1qxdJz/the_allamerican_rejects_gives_you_hell/ to check it out.

“It’s what we were put on this earth to create,” says Tyson Ritter of the new album. “This record hasn’t been smooth sailing,” confesses Nick of WHEN THE WORLD COMES DOWN. The new album was conceived from one end of the country to the other – from a secluded cabin in the Georgia wilderness (where “Mona Lisa” came to be), to a little place that Ty and Nick have on Florida’s Gulf Coast (“The Real World”), to the back of a bus cruising Interstate 10 (“Breaking’s What the Heart Is For”), and yet another road trip (this one to Vancouver, for “Gives You Hell”). AAR’s first duet, “Another Heart Calls,” features the hypnotic vocals of The Pierces, two sisters from Alabama.

WHEN THE WORLD COMES DOWN builds on the success of their sophomore CD. Move Along (produced by Howard Benson, of Hoobastank, P.O.D and Daughtry renown) is approaching 6 million in digital sales and has reigned on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly 100 weeks, entering at #6 and spinning off three Top 10 singles and videos:

“Dirty Little Secret,” the long-running first single (released concurrently with the album in July 2005), went to #4 on the CHR/Top 40 chart, and #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent 39 weeks. It also went to #1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, one of the first songs to sell 1 million downloads (a rare RIAA platinum title) across all digital partners of Universal Music, including Apple’s iTunes and other digital distributors, going on to sell close to 2 million songs.

“Move Along,” the title track second single, entered the Hot 100 in January 2006 (while “Dirty Little Secret” was still going strong). It reached #4 at Hot AC, #5 on the Hot Digital list, #9 at CHR/Top 40, and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it also spent 39 weeks, garnering close to 2 million in digital sales. The video for “Move Along,” a #1 MTV “TRL” favorite, was directed by Marc Webb and went on to win Best Group Video at the 2006 MTV VMAs.

“It Ends Tonight,” the third single, was released September 2006, toward the end of the long-distance chart run of “Move Along.” It gave the album its third consecutive Top 10 hit, rising to #7 on the Hot AC and Billboard Pop 100, and #8 on the Hot 100 and CHR/Top 40 charts.

A Journey Through Space With My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine Live at Aragon

The Irish shoegaze band, My Bloody Valentine, took a sold-out crowd on a sonic voyage through the cosmos Saturday night at the Aragon Entertainment Center. In the minds of MBV, the universe is deafening, so much so that free ear plugs were given away when entering the venue. I’ve never seen that done before, kudos.

Enrique Iglesias Knows How to Treat His Fans

Enrique Iglesias Chicago

Enrique Iglesias opened his show last night with his 2004 hit “Not In Love” and followed it with two Spanish ballads. Switching up his English and Spanish hits, Enrique kept the audience on their feet waiting to hear what the next song would be. Having been performing and writing music for the past 20 years, he did not have nearly enough time to fit in all of the songs that have garnered him millions of fans from around the world. “Bailamos” was the 4th song of the night and brought back the memories of the moment years ago when he officially crossed over into mainstream pop in America.

Keep reading after the jump to see more photos from last night’s nearly sold out concert…

Surprise! Another Metallica Lawsuit

Posted by Jessica Emmerich On September - 28 - 2008

According to TMZ:

Metallica Corp. is filing a lawsuit against Fernandes Guitars. Rob Trujillo is and has been endorsed by Fernandes and receives custom basses. The problem lies in the fact that Metallica is endorsed by ESP Guitars. See the problem? Now that he is officially apart of the Metallica Corporation, Metallica is suing Fernandes for using the image and likeness of Rob for promoting Fernandes guitars.

I’d like to see someone trying to tell Zakk Wylde, from Ozzy and Black Label Society, that he no longer allowed to play out on His Gibson Customs. Musicians create their sound, their edge through the instruments they play, and changing them does make a difference. I feel for Rob.

You can Check out Rob playing the ESP Guitars when Metallica comes and rips your town apart.
