House of Blues – Chicago, IL
September 2, 2008
I am going to be completely honest with you (please don’t look down on me for admitting this!) I only just became a fan of N*E*R*D this past May. Yes, I am referring to May 2008. Trust me, I do realize that this alternative hip-hop band has been around since 2001. I had always been aware of the name, but never heard any of their music. Like most people not in the know, I just knew that mega-producer to the stars and one half of production team The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams, was in this rap rock band. But let me tell you, my world was turned upside down after attending Kanye West’s Glow In the Dark Tour two nights in a row this past May. N*E*R*D was second to perform in the opening act line up; after Lupe Fiasco and before Rihanna. I had no idea what to expect since I had NEVER heard ANY of their songs. Ha! Was I in for a life-changing shock or what! Less than halfway through the band’s 30-minute set, I was hooked. Seriously, the music and the band’s live performance was like the biggest high I had ever experienced in my life. Their energy is nothing but contagious. Not kidding, N*E*R*D is now like a drug that I am addicted to. After the first night of the Glow In the Dark Tour here in Chicago, I could not WAIT to go back to the United Center the next night to see them again. And no, it was not because Chris Brown came out and danced during one of the new songs – Spaz – that just so happens to be my favorite track on the new album, Seeing Sounds. I was genuinely stoked to see Pharrell and Co. rock out that show. And they did not disappoint.
Whew, well now that I am done giving you the background to my first experience with N*E*R*D (I am a late bloomer, I know), keep reading after the jump to see more photos and the set list from the band’s Chicago show last night at the House of Blues…
Sadly, there was no Chad Hugo in sight last night. I have no idea why he was missing in action. Everybody after the show was wondering where he was. It would have been quite hard to miss him, seeing as how he is the only Filipino member of the trio and the other half of The Neptunes. He was probably off producing Billboard’s next No. 1 hit. The third member of N*E*R*D, Shae Haley, was in attendance though – thank God! At least the audience last night got to see 2/3 of the band. If you have yet to hear the band’s funk rock experimental music, let me recommend a few songs to give a listen to, which are my personal favorites: Brain, Spaz, Everyone Nose, She Wants to Move.
