Emily Hurd
A Cache in the Warehouse Floor

Emily Hurd is a singer-songwriter from Rockford, Illinois who is extremely driven and very talented. She has a voice that is refreshing and a true talent on the piano. She mainly sings and plays the piano, but her musical talents reach far beyond the two.
I remember seeing Emily at the Elbow Room in Chicago for her first cd release party for her first album Lines, which Columbia College’s Label picked up. Her live performance is incredible because of her voice.
She hasn’t disappointed on any of her albums up to this date. The best and probably the quirkiest part about Emily’s music, is she is not afraid to use big words. We joked about her use of language in her songs a long time ago, but now its a part of her writing. I remember people used to tell Emily that she needed to stop using “big words” in her music. They thought no one would listen to it because of her use of words. I wonder what they are thinking now? I think it is crazy and I’m glad she never dumbed down as we used to say.
She’s bright, talented, and a delight to see live. Need to hear a little bit of Emily? Check out her MySpace or her Official Site. Her influences: Hoagy Carmichael, Tom Waits, Erik Satie, Solomon Burke, Kris Kristofferson, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Claude Debussy, Ray Charles, Greg Brown, Mavis Staples, Bon Iver, Pat Sweany. That should give you an impression of the mix of sounds that appear in her music.
