The Riviera Theatre – Chicago, IL
October 11, 2008
Luke Pritchard (singer/guitarist)
I honestly don’t know how this band does it. I have seen The Kooks the past two times they’ve stopped in Chicago on tour and both shows were sold out! The first time I was introduced to The Kooks was back in May at The Vic Theatre. I had never heard any of their songs (nor had I ever heard of them!) and had no idea what I was getting myself into. However, I was going because it was free and my cousin Emily invited me since she had an extra ticket at the last minute. But what I have learned from Emily is that she has the BEST taste in music and ALWAYS knows what’s new in music months before I do, which is pretty impressive since I consider myself very “in the know” about all upcoming artists and songs. She has introduced me to MGMT, The Kooks, The Dandy Warhols and many more bands that I had previously never heard of before she invited me to their shows with her. From now on, I have learned to always catch a show for an artist that she recommends. I know that I will walk out of the show buying that band’s album at their merch table. In the case of The Kooks last May, I went straight home and bought their latest album Konk (Bonus Track Version) on iTunes based on the ridiculously catchy songs the band played just hours before. I was hooked and a fan for life. The Kooks are just plain old fun to watch and their music makes you happy, if nothing else. Luke (lead vocals) played alone on stage with an acoustic guitar for the first three songs of the band’s five song encore.
