Oxford Collapse Opens for Kaiser Chiefs

Oxford Collapse
Park West
Chicago, IL
11/13/2008

Thursday night Brooklyn rockers Oxford Collapse opened for Kaiser Cheifs at the Park West. They’ve been around the past few years but don’t seem to be making too much noise although they have gained attention from both SPIN and Pitchfork Media. With 4 albums out, including 2006’s Remember the Night Parties, they do a pretty good job at pumping out material. I have to say that I love the cover of the latest album BITS.

This was the second time that I’ve seen Oxford Collapse this year and I didn’t notice much difference. A short set with a few jokes in between. The joke of the evening was “make sure you get out and vote” and it had already been eight days after the election. Oxford Collapse play hard and get pretty loud but since the Park West seems to have more of a lounge feel, I don’t think it was the ideal venue for them. In the end things worked out and people made their way to the standing area from the booths and tables in the back. If you dig the sound of bands like the Liars or Ra Ra Riot you should have no problem throwing in a little Oxford Collapse in between. They’ve got that indie sound but sway a little towards punk with groovier bass lines. A little 80’s actually. BITS is out now on Sub Pop Records.

An Alternative Christmas Featuring Patent Pending

Posted by Jessica Emmerich On November - 27 - 2008

Alternative Addiction (www.alternativeaddiction.com) has announced the release of the site’s first-ever Christmas compilation, An Alternative Christmas. In addition to showcasing the site’s most well known tracklist on a compilation to date, it’s also their first charity disc.

One of the keystone songs on the album is the original Christmas song, “She’s A Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas” from Long Island’s Patent Pending. The song showcases the band’s trademark, high energy, high fun form of pop punk rock as they put a humorous take on the classic Christmas idea that anyone can change for the better, including those with questionable ethics.

An Alternative Christmas is available for download on www.alternativeaddiction.com and can be purchased digitally on both iTunes and Amazon.

Murder By Death Plays Chicago’s Metro

Adam Turla - Murder By Death Murder By Death - Sarah

Imagine walking through the backwoods of Indiana and stumbling upon an old farmhouse left untouched for decades. Enter Murder By Death and their dusty rock sound.

Before their show at Chicago’s Metro, I got to sit down with the band’s lead singer, Adam Turla. I will post the full interview within the next week and add a link here.

I became a fan of Murder after the hearing the single “Brother,” from the record In Bocca Al Lupo, a concept about sin and sinners. I caught them on tour with Clutch last spring and again this summer at Bash on Wabash. This month’s show makes for three seasons of MBD and I cannot wait for the fourth sometime in February.

Matt Nathanson Helps Chicago Get Higher

Matt Nathanson Chicago

The first time I saw Matt Nathanson live in concert was when he was the opening act for Tori Amos back in 2005 at The Auditorium Theatre here in Chicago. My friend Leah and I were had seats in the center of the 4th row. All I remember of his set was how he performed all alone with his acoustic guitar and a microphone while standing inches in front of the curtain that was hiding Tori’s stage set up from the crowd. I had no clue who this guy was, but I fell in love with him on the spot. I was blown away by his energy, sense of humor, guitar skills, voice, and songs! I was hooked from the moment he played a little song called “Detroit Waves,” which he told the audience he had written the day before while in Detroit for the day on the Tori tour. Now you can find the song on Matt Nathanson’s latest album Some Mad Hope, which was released in August 2007. It just goes to show you that artists write songs sometimes two and a half years before you can hear it on a record of theirs. But let me tell you, Nathanson’s songs are worth the wait. His current hit single “Come On Get Higher” is being played on Chicago’s 101.9 FM The Mix all the time since the beginning of last summer. It took almost a year to get major commercial radio airplay in the third largest market in the country, but gosh darn it he did it! I still remember the first time I head “Come On Get Higher” on the radio. I was driving to work last June, cruising down Lake Shore Drive, just approaching downtown Chicago’s beautiful skyline. It was a weekday after rush hour, so I was speeding along quite nicely with the windows down, wind blowing my hair everywhere! The first thing I felt when hearing Nathanson’s song in my car was pride. I was so proud of him that his music was getting broadcast to over 1 million people in the Chicagoland area. He deserves to be heard.

Check out some photos of Matt Nathanson from his first of two SOLD OUT shows at Chicago’s House of Blues…

Senior Gospel Choir Gets Gangsta

Posted by Yvette Casillas On November - 24 - 2008

This was too funny I just had to post it! I don't know if this church is just trying to attract the kiddies to come to church more often but I would totally be down going to church just to see the choir get gangsta. The video includes a clip of Eminem's Lose Yourself, Chamillionaire's Ridin', OutKast's Hey Ya!, Pussy Cat Dolls Don't Cha, MC Hammer's Can't Touch This, & a parody of Nelly's Hot In Herre.
