Lars Ulrich Holding Up More Releases

Posted by Yvette Casillas On December - 31 - 2008

Axl Rose and Guns n’ Roses are finally making an effort to promote the poorly selling Chinese Democracy, but shockingly enough a member of Metallica might be hindering their plans: Is the album’s long-promised music video for the track “Better” being delayed by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich?

That was the story coming from the MyGNRForum, where Fernando Lebeis, the son of Axl’s personal assistant, told fans, “Tell Lars to OK the vid and it’s done. That’s all that is pending.” When pressed to explain who Lars was, Lebeis responded, “Lars Ulrich. We are pending his release form to be signed.” In a message board chat weeks ago, Rose promised the “Better” video would be released in the near future and would feature live and backstage footage. Among the footage, supposedly, is Lars not only backstage with the band but also performing with Gn’R at a concert in Oakland, California in December 2006. But then just hours after Lepeis posted on the forum and the firestorm began, the post was quickly pulled. Lepeis then personally contacted Blabbermouth.net, who picked up the story, and told them the post “was a fun comment and not an attack on Lars.” An official statement from Gn’R soon followed which reads, “Lars isn’t holding anything up with our video. Our message board comments were meant casually, in fun and amongst friends. Unfortunately, someone with Blabbermouth may have taken things a bit out of context and made them into a bit more than they are in reality. Our apologies to anyone who may have been confused. We hope to have our video out shortly. Thank you.”

Don’t you love it when people back track. Who knows, we may or may not be waiting on Lars Ulrich to finally see the “Better” video, which would be the first Guns’ clip since that 1994 “Since I Don’t Have You? video which starred Gary Oldman. I guess we will just have to wait & see….

Australia’s Gabriella Cilmi: Lessons to Be Learned

Posted by Jessica Emmerich On December - 30 - 2008

Gabriella Cilmi (pronounced chill-me)
Lessons to Be Learned

She hails from Australia with a 6-week stint at #1 with “Sweet About Me” off her forth-coming album Lessons to Be Learned. She’s toured with James Blunt and she’s only 17 years old.

She’s had great success in 10 different countries and she’s hoping for the same success in the United States with help from Universal Republic. The album, Lessons to Be Learned is no doubt going to be a success (watch for her on VH1’s You Oughta Know artist). It’s filled with the catch pop choruses that everyone will start singing even if you don’t like the song. “Sweet About Me” is now stuck in my head and after seeing the video; I think it is a great song. In the video Gabriella looks all sweet and innocent and mid-vid she is tying up men from the ceiling and to chairs.

John Lennon’s One Laptop Per Child Commercial

Posted by Yvette Casillas On December - 30 - 2008

Of course with permission from his widow, Yoko Ono, a digital John Lennon stars in a new commercial for One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a charity attempting to grant Internet access to children in developing countries. The clip features Lennon’s voice digitally sewn together with multi-colored children symbols float around until they form an image of Lennon who speaks through the screen. “Imagine if every child, no matter where in the world they were, could access a universe of knowledge,” the virtual Lennon says. “They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way.” “You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world.”

I have to admit, it’s a little creepy but this isn’t the first time a celebrity has been integrated digitally for commercial means: Fred Astaire danced with a vacuum cleaner during a Super Bowl ad, and Elvis Presley and Muppets mastermind Jim Henson have also posthumously appeared in commercials. OLPC was founded in 2005 by Nicholas Negroponte and hopes to provide children in poor countries with durable, solar-powered laptops that cost a mere $200. The program is one Ono obviously believes in, as she has been very hesitant to lend Lennon’s image to ads in the past.

VIDEO: Esoterica Covers Delerium’s Silence

Posted by Jessica Emmerich On December - 27 - 2008

Remember when Sarah Mclachlan collaborated with Delerium for the song “Silence”? It was used in the Brokedown Palace soundtrack. The UK rock band Esoterica covered the song and it truly has a dark edge. The video is receiving airplay in the UK on Kerrang and Scuzz.

We reviewed their latest album, The Fool, here.

The Deep Vibration: Veracruz EP

Posted by Jessica Emmerich On December - 26 - 2008

Written by: Andy Keil

In today’s convoluted rock scene, it seems that either artists attempt a throwback sound influenced by the classics (Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan) or they dive into the uncharted waters of music that will turn into the genres of tomorrow (Animal Collective.) In both cases, not many can pull it off (Black Lips) and even fewer can pull it off well (Black Keys.) The Deep Vibration is no exception to that rule; they’re a bluesy four-piece rock band searching for that elusive throwback sound. That said, it’s obvious that these guys are influenced by the classics. However, the sound seems to fall right into their lap and they achieve it without coming across as trying to hard or simply imitating (Panic At The Disco.)

The quavering vocals offered by lead singer, Matt Campbell, are sung through a Shure SM-57 microphone and they parallel a toddler learning to walk; strong and confident one minute while beat down and broken the next. The SM-57 is typically used to mic drums and makes for an odd choice as a vocal mic. That could explain the shudder that’s ever present in his vocals. More often than not, Campbell sings in a voice still struggling for balance. He sounds best in parts the first track, “Oklahoma City Woman Blues,” where he sings without hesitation. The second track, “Third Day of July” slows the strut established by the first song and feels like it’s a little too soon. Unfortunately, the slower pace defines the rest of the EP. “Thanks To You” attempts to revive the stride that “Third Day of July” killed. And, while they don’t completely regain their swagger, the addition of a horn section sets it apart from the rest making it one of my favorites. Alternatively, on “Tennessee Rose,” the longest and slowest track on the record, his voice comes across soft and thankfully without the quaver. For this one, the guys unleash a harmonica that introduces some odd vocal harmonies provided by country singer Gillian Welch. I’m not quite sure they fit together but on an LP, I’m sure they’ll tighten them up.

No Doubt’s Adrian Young’s Interview With MTV News

Posted by Yvette Casillas On December - 24 - 2008

no doubt

Looks like we will have to wait for the new No Doubt record. Drummer Adrian Young admitted that the band is unlikely to release any new music until after 2009. In late November, No Doubt revealed plans to end their five-year hiatus and reunite for a 2009 tour on their website last month. “We’ve been working on a new record off and on now for a bit of time, and we’re going to continue to work on a new record next year,” Young told MTV News. “We’re going to continue to work on music while we’re traveling. We’ll have a mobile studio on the bus and eventually get to a new No Doubt record.” When the new album is ready, it’ll have a home at Interscope, the band’s label since 1991.

Surprisingly, Rihanna did not perform such hits as: Unfaithful, Pon de Replay, Break It Off (w/ Sean Paul), Hate That I Love You (w/ Ne-Yo), If I Never See Your Face Again (w/ Maroon 5), or the original version of Umbrella (w/ Jay-Z). However, the fact that Chris Brown made a special guest appearance and performed his hit Forever (complete with music video dance choreography!) more than made up for Rihanna’s too short set.
