Motown’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

Today marks the official 50th anniversary of Motown Records and members of some of the label’s greatest acts are in the Motor City to help kick off what will be a year-long celebration for the famed label. The Four Tops’ Abdul “Duke” Fakir and members of the Miracles, Martha & the Vandellas and Rare Earth will spend the week at the Motown Historical Museum, housed in the original Hitsville Headquarters. Plus, today was officially named Motown Day in the city of Detroit.
It was 50 years ago that Motown founder Berry Gordy first borrowed $800 with the hopes of starting his own label and founded Tamla Records, which would be incorporated as Motown in 1970 and produce its first hit a year later. Berry will not be on hand for the festivities, but said in a statement, “Motown music was for everybody, and it grew out of love. It has spread around the world and has become part of the culture and consciousness in all seven continents, and it all started right here.”
To honor the anniversary, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will house the exhibition “Motown: The Sound of Young America Turns 50,” plus Gordy has a documentary about his famed label in the works along with a Broadway musical and a Marvin Gaye exhibit. All in all it will be a busy year for Hitsville USA. Congratulations Mr. Gordy!

Company of Thieves on Live From Daryl’s House – 1/15
NEW YORK, January 8, 2008-Live From Daryl’s House begins the new year much as it ended the old one, with Daryl Hall playing live alongside some of the industry’s top up-and-coming bands. For the groundbreaking web destination’s 15th edition, Hall joins Wind-up Records recording artists Company of Thieves, a highly touted Chicago-based band whose label debut, Ordinary Riches, was released digitally Jan. 6 and will be in-stores Feb. 24. After two days on-sale digitally, the debut is #19 on the iTunes Top Albums chart, and #7 at Alternative.
The band’s lead vocalist Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch will perform a seven-song set with Daryl, which can be seen exclusively on www.livefromdarylshouse.com, including four tracks from the band’s Ordinary Riches album (“Pressure,” “Around the Block,” “Past the Sleep” and “Even in the Dark”), the Hall and Oates song, “Starting All Over” (from the duo’s 1990 album Change of Seasons) as well as the Daryl-penned smash, “Everytime You Go Away,” a hit single for Paul Young. Hall, Schatz and Walloch also tackle a pair of classic rock covers in the Zombies’ “Time of the Season” and “Piece of my Heart,” made famous by Janis Joplin.
Company of Thieves has been called “one of the city’s most Buzzworthy bands” by the Chicago Tribune, while Billboard dubbed them “one of the best unsigned acts out there” before they were inked to a record deal by Wind-up. Consisting of sultry vocalist Schatz and guitarist Walloch, along with drummer Mike Ortiz, the group earned First Place in the New York Songwriters’ Circle Contest for “Oscar Wilde,” a tune named after the famed Anglo-Irish writer whom the band cites as an important artistic inspiration.
“I am really impressed with what I’ve heard from Company of Thieves,” says Daryl. “They are truly one of the best new, young groups out there. I was really excited to play with them. The sky’s the limit in terms of their future.”
“Daryl and his team of thoroughly experienced and talented musicians provided a welcoming environment for us to work in. The whole day was a huge learning experience for us,” said Genevieve.
“It was so liberating to be able to play freely with no worries because of the caliber of musicians we were around. We loved collaborating with Daryl, T-Bone and everyone who is a part of this special program, and are honored to have been asked to appear,” added Marc.
Past episodes of Live from Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers like Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy and Finger Eleven’s James Black and Rick Jackett, along with newcomers such as Austin, TX-based acoustic guitarist/songwriter Monte Montgomery, Philly soul singer Mutlu, Canadian techno-rockers Chromeo, MySpace pop-rock phenom Eric Hutchinson and Cash Money Records rocker Kevin Rudolf.
Live from Daryl’s House started with Daryl’s “light-bulb moment” idea of “playing music with my friends and putting it up on the Internet,” and the show has subsequently been praised by such varied publications as Rolling Stone, Daily Variety, Yahoo and the influential Lefsetz Letter.
Mahjongg Announce Winter 2009 US TOUR / Release Video For “Groove Rider” / 7″ Single Out Now On K Records

Click Here To View Video For “Groove Rider”
| Originally formed in the great bounteous Midwest region of the United States “Mahjongg” began as a simple experiment between The Grid and The Sphere. To attract the brood orientation of the young mind, Mahjongg knew the only way to spread Kontpab’s message was by forming a musiK band. This ever-expanding Sect uses “irratainment” to teach the warnings and Revelations of the almighty god Kontpab. Kontpab basically warns the human race of the mass “funneling” of the populace minds into The Grid.
Once trapped in The Grid themselves, Kontpab instructed Mahjongg to make a pilgrimage to Chicago, IL., where they would form their first “warning orbs,” at local art spaces and bars, and in turn be shown the light that is The Sphere. It was during this time that the Machinegong EP was recorded, and their first attempt to leave Kontpab’s message sublimated in the patricians of the clubs was a success. Kontpab showed Mahjongg that The Grid’s seemingly well-defined rules and laws could in fact be used against The Grid itself. Many not briefed on the vast Kontpab religion will never fully understand Mahjongg during their “Warning Orbs,” so they cut another album to set into stone what Kontpab had clearly shown them: Raydoncong 2005 . Again using The Grid’s vast amalgam of mathematical tools against itself, The Sect were able to demonstrate to the brood, for instance with prime numbered polyrhythms, that not only was the path to The Sphere full of spectacle and self awakening, but pharmaceuticals, beer, and dancing as well. It was here that Mahjongg became not only teacher, but student, and this is where The Chicago Sects association with the Water Babies began. Born into the great Chicago winter of ’06 in the septic rivers of the Magikal Forest, the Water Babies used Kontpabs undivided and all seeing power to unlock The Sphere’s greatest secret: improvisation. With these new teachings from the almighty Kontpab, Mahjongg was able to create a new church and recording studio for the Chicago Sect. Soon the tapestries of aural chaos were tempered and perfected. Software was upgraded and drums tuned. With nervous but relevant hair follicles and motley threads, Mahjongg hit the scene. Many eons of “Warning Orbs” have since commenced, but the human race still chooses to “funnel” into The Grid. It is because of this that Mahjongg is left with no choice but to invoke the name of our great God almighty itself. And it is with this name we proudly present to you our new album, Kontpab. For we are all Kontpab. |

The Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas
It’s that time of year again when I head to Vegas to the see the latest in consumer electronics. I ultimately go to the latest in mobile gear and music. I skipped the Billboard Music Conference this year because last year was a waste of my time. I hate to admit that I even spent money to go there. A blogger friend said she went to this year’s for the first half and said it was pretty boring and uneventful so she left.
It’s funny like most conferences I think people go just to go to the parties to either have fun or to network. Ok, occasionally it’s both. This year we were invited to a couple different parties and thank goodness none of them overlapped. Last night was Sony’s Online Party at Studio 54. They had life size chess and checker games as well as a huge race track set up for remote control racing. Oh yes, there was a poker tournament going on, but I was the first one kicked out so I had the opportunity to explore the “Studio.” I am really bad at Texas Hold ‘em. It was all good fun and good times, especially hanging out with my new BBC friends and Home and Gardens.
Tonight is the Monster Party with Diana Ross. I am very excited to see what kind of show she puts on. We are going to try and get some pictures and definitely a full report on the night’s festivities. Otherwise today is a day of R&R and trying to rid of the sniffles!

Northest Theater Shows Opening For Ben Kweller In February
Release Tour EP In Advance Of Sophomore Album

“Listening is like running down a mountain on a switchback trail, the sound of surprise generating its own momentum. There’s a punk glee inside the bluegrass craft-and a punk vehemence inside the bluegrass smile.”- Greil Marcus
“… charming, unusually graceful music” – The New York Times
“…like 1995 Wilco with the sensibility of 2007 Wilco.” - The Onion AV Club, Milwaukee
“They play their catchy originals with virtuosic mandolin jams and honky-tonk piano fillers, and top them with off-kilter, good-time harmonies.” – Time Out New York
Harlem Shakes To Release Debut LP Technicolor Health Out March 24th On Gigantic Music
Tracklisting Revealed/ US Tour To Come
Burning Birthdays EP Out Now

“Unlike so many up-and-coming New York bands, the Shakes avoid lingering in one narrow-minded framework. The harmonies may lend themselves to some throwback Spector-era comparisons, and some of the grander choruses may resemble a primordial New Pornographers or Walkmen, but thanks
to a frenetic clip of hooks, you can’t simply pigeonhole Burning Birthdays.” – Pitchfork EP review (7.3)
“…From Big Stary western, through a touch of swing, across rockabilly into R&B and storming out in rock mode, as ethereal harmonies sing out above. So nuanced are the genre changes, they’re virtually imperceptible, leaving listeners to ponder just how the sound got where it is.
There’s lots of garage bands out there, but few that so perfectly capture the sound of the time, whilst simultaneously pulling the rug out from the age of innocence with their all too cynical lyrics. Brilliant.” -All Music Guide (4 and a half stars)
“This Brooklyn band debuts with a remarkably well-crafted EP of expansive garage-pop combining ultra-catchy melodies with soaring harmonies. Their bright, effervescent sound incorporates some vintage pop-rock influences (doo wop, Phil Spector and ’60s girl groups) while also fitting in with New York contemporaries like the Strokes and the Walkmen.” – Don Yates , KEXP
“Every band from New York thinks it’s the Next Big Thing, but these guys might actually pull it off. Catchy garage rock, great harmonies and you can dance to it, too.”-The Washington Post
“Harlem Shakes are one of the hottest bands in Brooklyn right now. They apply a rough-and-ready New York aesthetic — deliciously sloppy guitars, speeding drum and bass lines — to the soaring sounds of the golden age of ’50s rock.” -Playboy

Ron Asheton: Fellow Stooges Dies at 60

Ron Asheton, guitarist and founding member of the Stooges, was reportedly found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan yesterday morning. Cause of death has not yet been announced but indications suggest Asheton had a heart attack. Police entered Asheton’s home and discovered his body on a couch after his personal assistant was unable to reach the rocker for days. Detective Bill Stanford told Michigan Live it appeared Asheton passed away several days ago.
The Stooges has released the following statement; “We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron’s death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed,” reads the statement from Iggy Pop, Scott Asheton, Mike Watt and the band’s management. “For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr. Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not.”
“As a musician Ron was ‘The Guitar God’, idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him,” the statement continues. Iggy Pop adds, “I am in shock. He was my best friend.”
NOTORIOUS: STORY OF THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.

The life and death story of The Notorious B.I.G. aka Christopher Wallace releases January 16th. Biggie smalls came straight out of Brooklyn who was a drug dealer turn rapper. Biggie drew on his experiences in his rapping. To many, Big Poppa is considered a powerful figure in the hip-hop world, his release “Life After Death” was a top seller and is considered one of the most influential hip-hop records of the modern era. Notorious is expected to examine his troubled life, his music, and his impact.
Starring Brooklyn rapper Gravy aka Jamal Woolard playing Biggie, Derek Luke as P. Diddy, Angela Bassett as Voletta Wallace, and Anthony Mackie as Tupac it’s definitely worth checking out.
Like Biggie, Woolard was a drug dealer before he became a rapper. He had released a number of albums on indie labels in the 1990s before being signed by Warner Bros, but is known for carrying on with an interview after being shot before a radio appearance outside New York hip-hop station Hot 97 a couple years ago.
Voletta Wallace says “Jamal’s charming personality, warm spirit, wonderful sense of humor and beautiful smile” as reasons for the casting. “He is a talented and charismatic actor, and I am excited that he will bring Christopher’s character to life,” she said.

My Take on Madonna’s “4 Minutes”
Ok…I am going through the Dead Hub posts and re-categorizing every post. Yes, it painstaking and time consuming especially since we have nearly 800 posts. I realized, “Wow, we have lots of content!” Then I realize that there are posts in here that never got published. Ooops! This one was supposed to be posted back on May 17th. Again, not really sure why it didn’t appear on that day. You can think of this as me remembering 2008 since I didn’t do any of those “Best of” articles.
So onward…..or backwards..
May 17th 2008
Maybe I am a little too practical. I am trying to figure out Madonna’s song “4 Minutes.” I am watching the video on YouTube right now and I can’t figure out what the song is about. Apparently they only have four minutes to say something and I wish they would just say it to get to the point. Maybe the song wouldn’t have to be 4 minutes long if Madonna would just stop chasing after the insanely sexy Justin Timberlake. By the way Madonna is 50 years young (Go Madonna!). I really have been a fan of hers for a long time but she lost me completely after her Music album. The one thing I wish I could see is her wearing more than just a corset in videos. I know she’s buff and beautiful, she knows she’s buff and beautiful, but I think next time Justin Timberlake should be running around wear almost nothing. Just a suggestion. By the way, the length of the video is 4 Minutes and 7 Seconds. Hmmmm..
Hey! Hey! It’s the Love Willows! (At Last)
The Love Willows
Hey! Hey!
Decca Records
Tentative Release Date: 1/27/2009
Many artists consider getting signed by a major label a huge milestone that gets them set for life. Try having that glory taken away as the label goes through “management changes” and firings, as Virgin did, and as Hope Partlow of The Love Willows experienced first hand. By the age 16 she was signed by Virgin just to have it all taken away–she had to start back at square one.
Today she paired up with Ryan Wilson, who plays guitar and produced their debut album, “Hey! Hey!” which has a tentative release date of 1/27/09. When I say “paired up”, I mean it was an immediate chemistry between the two. Hope says about the new album, “It’s a product of what we’ve gone through as a couple, the battles and the glories; everything that’s happened in the past few years.”
