Run Devil Run The Roxy - Hollywood, CA 3/20/2009

Run Devil Run debuted their latest EP,5 BY 5, on Friday the 20th. It’s the first EP of new music from the group since changing their name from Poets and Pornstars to Run Devil Run. It’s a new band in essence and a new name. Don’t get me wrong, the band rocks more than ever with their new frontman, Jeremy at the helm.

If you are unfamiliar with Run Devil Run these guys (and Sally) are good old rock and roll and in the day in age where many bands forget what it is to rock Run Devil Run set the new standards for this era.  They have a massive following in Hollywood but that didn’t stop their fans in the likes of Chicago to come out and root them on Friday.

All the bands members love and acknowledge their fans and their appreciations shows. Jeremy thanked everybody several times between songs for being there for the band even through the frontman transition.

This is the second time I have seen Run Devil Run live and they feel like a tighter band already. They really know how to entertain a crowd and it helps when your bass player is a really “hot” woman that every man in the room has fantasies about. Don’t think we don’t know this boys. I see how you look at her! It’s all part of the package that gives the band such great appeal. They are all multi-talented and play to the crowd. You don’t need to know the words to the songs; even though they are catchy enough you will catch on, to have a fun night.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, watch for big things from this band! Hollywood is only the beginning for Run Devil Run.

Blue October House of Blues - San Diego, CA 3/18/2009Ahh…didn’t realize what a cult following these guys have until I posted news months back about the tour they are currently on. I was reading message boards where fans were planning trips just to see Blue October. I am not saying that’s a bad thing. I love seeing fans come together for a band that they have so much passion and energy for and Blue October’s Fans came out in full force.

I honestly thought they were going to be just another rock band until I actually saw them on that beautiful Tuesday night in San Diego. Justin is a very memorizing frontman. He hypnotized all the ladies that made up the first 10 rows of people at the HOB. Plus the stage setup was very interesting. It wasn’t how artists traditionally setup a stage. Normally all the musicians onstage face the crowd, but not on Blue October’s stage. They set the stage so several mics were facing to the side of the stage. It made for a great visual and an unexpected surprise.

Blue October House of Blues - San Diego, CA 3/18/2009

These guys are out supporting Approaching Normal that hit the streets on March 24th. If you haven’t picked up your copy or if you need to hear the album go here.

The only complaint I had for the night was the incredible low lights. I understand the whole ambiance the band was going for but when I’m not that far from the stage and for the majority of the time I have a hard time seeing the band members that is not a good sign. I know going to a live concert is about the live music but I know I am there to SEE the band. I also know the House of Blues is capable of supplying brighter lights.

Overall Blue October won me over with their show and their music. I would love to see them again next time they roll into town.

Rihanna Cooperating With DA

Rihanna Chicago 1

Despite reports that Rihanna wasn’t helping the Los Angeles district attorneys prepare their case against Chris Brown, Rihanna’s lawyer, Donald Etra, reiterated to Us yesterday, “She will do everything that the law requires her to do… nothing has changed.” A district attorney spokeswoman backed up Etra’s statement, saying, “We deal with her attorney, who says she is a cooperating victim.”

Brown still hasn’t entered a plea after being charged on March 5th with a pair of felonies for assault and making criminal threats. Brown will be arraigned on the charges next Monday, April 6th. Last month, after reports surfaced that Brown and Rihanna had reunited at Diddy’s Florida mansion following their alleged February 8th incident, lawyer Etra still said, “At this point, she is willing to do anything that the law requires her to do. If subpoenaed, she will testify.”

Regardless, Rihanna’s further cooperation likely isn’t that key to the case at this point, even if the singer refuses to testify. There’s proof of abuse in that “horrific” photograph of a battered Rihanna, plus there are Rihanna’s statements to police immediately after the incident.

Both Rihanna and Brown were no-shows at this past weekend’s Kids Choice Awards. Which is amazing to me since Rihanna has been on a publicity train, going out to dinner & clubbing it up without Chris. Not to mention Chris being seen out and about like everything is right in the world. The two young stars were nominated for Favorite Singer and Favorite Song, but on March 11th Brown withdrew himself from competition in light of his pending charges. Rihanna lost Favorite Female Singer to Miley Cyrus, and Favorite Song went to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” rather than “Don’t Stop the Music.”

Lady GaGa Brings The Fame Ball Tour to Chicago – Twice in One Night!

Lady GaGa
House of Blues – Chicago, IL
March 24, 2009

Lady GaGa House of BluesLady GaGa is fierce. Posh who? Lady GaGa owns the world of music now. Her second single “Poker Face” is the #1 Top Song on iTunes. Words cannot explain how much I love this girl. I want to be her! But honestly, who doesn’t? She can play the piano, as well as any other keyboard or synthesizer). She can sing. She writes (or co-writes) her own songs. She can dance. She does NOT lip-synch – unlike many of her pop diva contemporaries ruling the Top 40 airwaves (ahem, Britney?!). Basically, Lady GaGa is fearless. And I love her for that. The woman is only 23 years old!

I was lucky enough to catch both of Lady GaGa’s Chicago shows – the early show and the late show. Each set had the same five amazing costume changes with Lady GaGa performing the same set of songs. GaGa only had her DJ (Space Cowboy) and three male backup dancers accompany her on stage. When it came time for the slow part of the evening, GaGa was on stage alone with her piano to serenade her adoring fans. Decked out in some sort of bubble mini-dress (seriously, you should’ve been there to see it), Lady GaGa performed the increasingly popular piano & voice version of “Poker Face.” At one point during the song, GaGa asked the audience “What do you need me for?” after realizing we all knew every word and could sing the song with her just playing the chords to keep us in key.

Fans were then treated to a brand new song called “Future Love” that GaGa had recently written. Hopefully it will be recorded for her next album, because I LOVED it. Another slow acoustic piano & voice ballad, “Future Love” had Lady GaGa singing to her imaginary lover, which happened to be a mannequin. Again, you should’ve been there to see it.

“All right, let’s get to the song you all came here for,” Lady GaGa told the crowd before launching into her mega-hit “Just Dance.” Maybe the “radio fans” only came to see her sing “Just Dance” because that’s all they know, but not me. I loved every single note GaGa sang/played of every song. She. Is. Amazing. I don’t even know what else to say… Check out TONS of photos from the early show after the jump!

Set list from both sold out shows last Tuesday at the House of Blues (songs may not be in order):

Money Honey

Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)

Poker Face (acoustic piano ballad version)

Future Love (new unrecorded song)

Chester French ‘Loves Everybody’ (and No Doubt)

Chester French
House of Blues – Chicago, IL
March 24, 2009

Chester French House of BluesMaxwell Drummey (guitar, keyboards)

Chester French played two SOLD OUT shows in a row last Tuesday night while opening for Lady GaGa on The Fame Ball tour. I was lucky enough to get into both the early and late show, so I saw the Chester French guys twice in one night, having never seen them before.

I first took notice of the band while reading up on Mark Hoppus’s blog. Mark had posted their music video on his site after hearing about the band from Travis Barker. The video is for Chester French’s first single “She Loves Everybody” and basically consists of having the two dudes in the band get beat up buy some chick while they’re playing their song. Pretty simple, yet so classic, Black and white. I love it. The song is catchy as hell. Trust me, you’ll love it. If not after the first listen, then you’ll definitely be hooked after the second or third time.

I honestly didn’t like “She Loves Everybody” the first time around, but it grew on me! For those of you unfamiliar with Chester French, it’s a band made up of two dudes: Maxwell Drummey (Max) and David-Andrew Wallach (D.A.). Max plays the majority of the instruments during their live show, as well as writes most of the music. D.A. is the lead singer and writes the majority of the lyrics. He’s also quite talented at playing the triangle and the shaker by the way, which is clearly evident when performing “She Loves Everybody.” Max and D.A. only had less than half an hour to warm up the crowds at each show, but both sets including an AWESOME cover of No Doubt’s “Hella Good.” Any band that covers No Doubt is good enough for me. They have a fan for life in yours truly.

Make sure you check out Chester French when they hit up a city near you. These guys are going to be huge! Their fans already include big names like Kanye West, Jimmy Iovine, Pharrell Williams, Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker, Pete Wentz, Clinton Sparks, N.E.R.D., Common, and much more! You don’t wanna be the last one to hear about Chester French. More photos after the jump!

John Mulaney shows Us Just “The Top Part”

John Mulaney

Whether as a commentator on television, or the web series “I Love the 30s,” or making any number of late night talk show appearances, JOHN MULANEY is one of the most talked about new comedians on the comedy scene. His new CD, The Top Part, hits stores on Tuesday, March 24, released on Comedy Central Records.

Currently a writer for Saturday Night Live, Mulaney cut his teeth touring the country with his unique brand of storytelling and love of the TV show, Law And Order. The Top Part was recorded in front of a packed house at the San Francisco Punch Line in November 2008.

His first half-hour special, “COMEDY CENTRAL Presents John Mulaney” airs on Friday, April 3 at 10:00 pm. Mulaney isn’t used to being an object of fear in this stand-up special and wonders how the bartenders on “Law & Order” remember all their customers.

LAS VEGAS – March 23, 2009 – Arena rocker Peter Frampton makes his way to the intimate The Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Casino Resort on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 9:00 p.m.

Peter Frampton has been a legend on the rock scene as far back as the late ’60s and early ’70s when he performed with bands like Herd and Humble Pie. His debut solo album Wind of Change was released in 1972 followed by Frampton in 1975 which reached #32 on the U.S. charts and included career defining hits “Show Me The Way” and “Do You Feel Like We Do.”

Frampton Comes Alive was released in 1976 and quickly became the most well-known Frampton album featuring hits like “Baby, I Love Your Way” and “Show Me The Way.” “Do You Feel Like We Do” was also featured on this album and showcased his famous talk box guitar effect. It became the largest selling live album of its time and went multi-platinum selling more than 6 million copies in the U.S. and 16 million worldwide.

Frampton released his latest album Fingerprints, an amazing 14-tune collection of guitar genius that combines musical influences from R&B and rock to blues-infused country and jazz. In a surprising move to his fans Frampton decided to focus on instrumentals for this album instead of his vocals. Fingerprints landed him the 2007 Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album and featured artists from bands such as Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers and many more.

Eminem, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood, & Flea Induct 2009 Class of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers

According to Rolling Stone:

Eminem, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among the artists who will induct the 2009 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers at a ceremony in Cleveland on April 4th. Eminem, who returns from a long hiatus with a pair of Relapse albums due out this year, will welcome rap icons Run-DMC into the Rock Hall. San Francisco metal gods Metallica will be inducted by Flea, whose own band will become Rock Hall-eligible next year.

One Yardbird will induct another as Jimmy Page salutes his former band mate and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jeff Beck. This will be Beck’s second time as an inductee: he entered the Hall as a Yardbird in 1992; this time it’s for his solo work. (Page, himself a two-time Hall of Famer reentered as a member of Led Zeppelin in ‘95.)

A pair of popular late-night television musicians will also be on hand. David Letterman’s sidekick Paul Shaffer will honor songwriting great Spooner Oldham, while E Streeter and Conan O’Brien bandleader Max Weinberg will welcome DJ Fontana into the Hall. Another E Street Band member will take the stage when bassist Garry Tallent posthumously inducts Elvis Presley’s bassist Bill Black. Finally, Smokey Robinson will take the podium to pay tribute to vocal group Little Anthony & the Imperials.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be live on Fuse at 9 pm on April 4th.

Lenka Tells Sold Out Crowd: Just Enjoy the Show!

The Vic Theatre – Chicago, IL
March 13, 2009

Lenka The Vic Theatre

I honestly had no clue who (or even what) Lenka was before I attended her show opening for Missy Higgins. With Lenka not being the most common name in America, I had no clue where she was from (or even if she was a girl or a band). But seeing as how I knew that Missy Higgins is a singer-songwriter from Australia, I assumed that Lenka must be in the same boat genre-wise. Turns out, I was right! Lenka is also a singer-songwriter from Australia, the latter fact becoming evident as soon as Lenka took a moment in between songs to speak to the audience. “Is that an accent I hear?” is what went through my head as I was photographing this adorable pint-sized woman who plays the keyboard and the keytar. Love this girl! Piano-playing chicks who write their own songs rule! Even though Lenka is not from America, she has had her music heard by more Americans than many artists in this country could only dream of having. This is due to the fact the Lenka’s song “The Show” was featured in an Old Navy TV commercial campaign, as well as in promo spots for the hit TV show Ugly Betty. As if Old Navy and ABC’s Ugly Betty weren’t enough, her song “Don’t Let Me Fall” was placed in the premiere episode of the CW’s 90210. Check out the music video for Lenka’s “The Show” and Ugly Betty here. Being a huge Ugly Betty fan, I absolutely loved this music video, which was used this past fall to promote the current 3rd season of the TV series. In the promo spot, the actual music video for “The Show” is mixed in with past moments/clips from the last two seasons of Ugly Betty. Pretty big deal for an artist (from Australia!) to land that placement. Way to go Lenka – the official artist of Ugly Betty! If you get the chance to see Lenka live in concert, make sure you go. The best part of her set is by far at the end of “The Show” where everyone in the crowd is singing along to the lyric: “I want my money back! I want my money back! I want my money back! Just enjoy the show!” And that my friends, is exactly what I did – just enjoyed the show.

Yelp’s Arabian Nights at Tizi Melloul

Chicago, IL 60610

Tizi Melloul_Chicago

I came here for the Arabian Nights Yelp event last night. The evening was filled with specialty drinks, Belly dancers, tarot card readers, henna tattooists & of course de-lish morsels.

Décor:  The restaurant was filled with vibrant red colors, comfy pillows, spectacular lanterns and chandeliers that glowed soft radiance. It is a very intimate space with a cozy vibe.

The Crowd: Full of Elite Yelpers of course! The crowd was friendly & interactive with the Belly dancers.

Service: Absolutely wonderful! The owner, Steven, stopped by our group to introduce himself & made sure we had plenty of drinks & bites to nibble on. The servers were fabulous. They were so pleasant & accommodating. The Belly dancers were outstanding! They even gave my friend a little lesson in how to shake her money maker!

Smashing Pumpkins Back In The Studio Without Jimmy Chamberlin

Smashing Pumpkins fans are taking the good with the bad, Billy Corgan is back in the studio working on the band’s new album, but he’ll be doing it without drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who has left the group for an unknown reason. Chamberlin’s departure was announced in a terse, two-sentence press release sent strategically late on Friday, March 20th, while most of the music industry was in Austin for the South By Southwest Festival or had already left work for the day. The statement said Corgan will continue to record under the Smashing Pumpkins moniker. And just like that, Billy Corgan has joined the Axl Rose club. “I Am One” indeed.

Chamberlin joined Smashing Pumpkins in 1988, was kicked out for substance abuse-related problems in 1996 but was brought back in 1998. After the Pumpkins’ first breakup, Chamberlin joined Corgan in Zwan. The drummer was also the centerpiece of his own Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, which released the album Life Begins Again in 2005. Chamberlin accompanied Corgan for the Pumpkins’ “reunion” disc Zeitgeist and the group’s subsequent 20th anniversary tour. In the end, Chamberlin drummed on every Pumpkins album except for 1998’s Adore. So the band’s next album will be the first not to feature James Iha, D’Arcy Wretzky or Chamberlin.

Chamberlin’s past problems with substance abuse are no secret: In 1996, before a Pumpkins concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the drummer and touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin both overdosed on heroin. Melvoin died and Chamberlin was booted from the band. Chamberlin went to rehab following the incident then reconvened with Corgan in ‘98.

Everyone from Nirvana to Pavement to Stone Temple Pilots cite Meat Puppets as one of the most significant American bands.

The highly influential Meat Puppets started as a punk rock band, but established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock. Meat Puppets later gained significant exposure when the Kirkwood brothers served as guest musicians on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993. The band’s subsequent album Too High to Die went gold, selling over 500,000 albums, and became their most successful release. The band reunited in 2006.

Recorded at The Saltmine in Phoenix, Arizona in winter 2009, the album features the Kirkwood brothers, Cris and Curt, with drummer Ted Marcus.

Sewn Together will be released on May 12, 2009 on Megaforce Records.

White Denim Play LOS ANGELES On 4.1 At Spaceland (Club NME) & Announce SXSW Dates

Rolling Stone: Fricke’s Picks
“Like Ike and Tina Turner….. White Denim never do anything nice and easy.
The bands chopped up punk delirium is effortless sorcery, evoking Talking
Heads’ dancing-bones rock, the dervish thrash of the Minutemen and the
Strokes’ pneumatic-guitar pop…White Denim is not simple work, but
everything you get is nice and rough.”- David Fricke

NY Times:
“The Austin trio that can sound like the Ventures transplanted to Texas,
psychedelic catapulted toward math-rock, ZZ Top on a caffeine binge or the
early Talking Heads with a chip on their shoulder. White Denim should the the
proverbial hard act to follow.”

Phil and the Osophers grab it by the tail- shows, lots of albums, books, art! SXSWEET!

“Brooklyn duo Phil And The Osophers are a band who swim in the same gutter water of neo-Nuggets groups like The Black Lips and King Khan & The Shrines” – RCRD LBL

“Modern art makes Phil & the Osophers want to get their eyes fixed. The Brooklyn three-piece make like Doc and the Tors in the loose, ramshackle clip for loose, ramshackle indie-pop tune ‘High Art’ ” – Pitchfork

No ones goin’ to bring it to SXSW harder than Phil and the Osophers. Get yourselves there!

The band has put out FIVE albums via their own sustainable label, Factual Fabrications.  Their latest “Toward Conquering The Invisible North” recieved rave reviews and garnered a delightful video for High Art, in which the band perform laser eye surgery on a friend.  While digital is the most sustainable resource, Osophers fans can still buy their physical albums from Factual Fabrications.  All album art are printed on recycled paper and they use only recycled jewel cases.  That keeps the cost and price down.  Ingenius!

In other news, all 3 members have written and published books of poetry and non-fiction through their own publishing house called ILOANBooks.  Bass player Gus has published NINE books, Drummer Kevin has published two, and Phil has just written his first book of poetry entitled “SHAKE! and other rattlers” They will have these for “sale” at SXSW, along with all 5 albums.  [Read more…]

Detroit’s Own Deastro To Release Debut LP “Moondagger” Out June 25th On Ghostly International

First Single “Parallelogram” Out Now To Rave Reviews
On Tour Now, Announce SXSW Dates

Pitchfork Media Forkcasts “Parallelogram”

Paste Magazines Band Of The Week

Real Detroit Weekly “Artist Of The Year”

When Randolph Chabot, the 22-year-old auteur behind Deastro, is asked about the title of his new album, he recounts a dream about a prince, a kingdom, an evil King of Darkness, and a search for the mythical “Moondagger,” the bearer of which wields ultimate power. And while Moondagger, Deastro’s astonishing new album, does contain traces of that dream–in all of its bittersweet, fantasy-novel glory–the record itself is infinitely more down-to-earth, containing the sort of unrelentingly earnest, inspirational pop music that could only come from a kid weaned on fiction but living desperately, joyously in the here-and-now.

Moondagger expands upon the positive electro-pop of Keepers – Deastro’s home-recorded opus from 2008 – with the addition of a full band. Thankfully, the mercurial, prolific Chabot still seems blissfully unaware of his music’s genreless-ness. Thick, atmospheric production obscures bright, starry-eyed melodies; ecstatic synth squiggles dance around new-wave beats on songs about Nordics, toxic crusaders, and geometric shapes; arrangement ideas bounce off one another within ambitious song structures that swerve left, then right, then left again.

And yet underneath all of their seeming irreverence, Deastro’s songs are breathtakingly down-to-earth – melodic slices of synth-led experimental pop whose energy builds with each iteration of the chorus, hitting emotional peak after emotional peak until they collapse in a heap. The album-opening “Biophelia” can barely contain its heart-in-throat urgency, Chabot’s rapid-fire delivery slicing through layers of shoegaze-y ambience; “Vermillion Plaza,” plucky synth arpeggios ricochet off cavernous echo-chamber walls, Chabot pleads for human contact, asking “would you be my son, ‘cause of all of mine have died?”

Moondagger hums with Chabot’s faith in the goodness of his family and friends (“People are so amazing that I can’t help but write about what makes them who they are,” Chabot says), and yet, there’s a lurking sense that the optimist’s fight is never over. The title of Moondagger’s centerpiece, “Daniel Johnston Was Stabbed in the Heart with the Moondagger by the King of Darkness and His Ghost Is Writing this Song as a Warning to All of Us,” says it all: Among all the Beach Boys backing vocals and keyboard confetti-curliques, there’s an eternal battle raging; with Deastro, Randolph Chabot is out to win the war for the forces of good.\ [Read more…]
