Soma was packed with over 2,500 people and you could smell it. Yes, that’s right, you could smell it. It was a hot, sweaty, stinky mess in Soma. I guess I have seen and felt worse, but it’s been awhile. This is why I’d prefer to see bands like Taking Back Sunday outside.

Anberlin opened for them on this hot Friday night in San Diego. There was a ton of screaming girls and lots of drinking. Not that there isn’t a lot of drinking going on at every other concert, but I find it funny that Taking Back Sunday fans can’t hold their liquor. I had a girl hurl two feet away from me. See what I mean by stinky? Even the security guards opened up the side doors when possible because it was BAD and the fact it was boiling inside Soma didn’t help either. I was warned, because I sent a writer and photographer out the night before to Soma for pop singer Kate Voegele. Even then, they were complaining about the heat inside the venue and the crowd wasn’t even moving that night. Taking Back Sunday’s crowd were the movers and shakers of the night, even though I felt the majority of the crowd was there for Anberlin.

When Taking Back Sunday hit the stage the smoke machines were kicking ass and it didn’t take long before seeing the stage was nearly impossible. I think some people forget where they are when they hit the red button on those smoke machines.

The bass was much louder for TBS than for Anberlin. The hard rock kicked in when those smoke machine were in full gear. The crowd responded strong at first, but mid-set I noticed people getting tired. It wasn’t until the tail end of the set where the crowd picked up again. Was is due to a more recognizable song? Maybe, because I noticed as the crowd moved they also started singing along to the bouncing ball more. This is the best crowd yet for a kick ass night of Karaoke! Adam even commented on the San Diego crowd. ” This is the most energetic San Diego crowd we’ve ever seen.” Then they asked the crowd what do you do when you see people on the ground. The crowd screamed, “Pick them up!” The band said that they didn’t want to see anybody hurt at the show.
