Björk Featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “All Songs Considered”

Popular Musician Shares Her Essential Music Picks
in “You Must Hear This” Series and as Guest DJ

June 29, 2009, Washington, D.C. – The day before her latest album is released, visionary artist Björk joins both NPR’s All Things Considered and All Songs Considered to share some of her favorite music. The Icelandic singer is featured in the “You Must Hear This” segment tonight on All Thing’s Considered talking about Syrian pop-electronic artist Omar Souleyman, and then guest DJs during a special installment of NPR Music’s All Songs Considered program.

“You Must Hear This” is a new series on All Things Considered that features artists of all genres discussing the music that influences their own work, and what makes a true classic. Björk’s selection for the series is Syrian musician Omar Souleyman. Similar to her eclectic and complex music, Souleyman’s sound is an amalgamation of several styles. His music combines Arabic mawal-style vocalization, high-octane Syrian Dabke (the region’s party music), Iraqi Choubi and a swirl of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish music. The result is overdriven Arabic keyboard solos and frantic rhythms played at break-neck speeds.

In addition to her “You Must Hear This” contribution, Björk plays DJ on All Songs Considered and speaks with host Bob Boilen, offering a good idea of what stirs her musical passions. Her selections include another Icelandic singer Ólöf Arnalds, the British ‘80s band Eyeless in Gaza, Nordic vocal music with a nod to Igor Stravinsky and experimental indie band Michachu and the Shapes. The show also includes songs from her new album Voltaic.

NPR Music is currently streaming a full preview of Voltaic as part of its “Exclusive First Listen” series. Complete track listings and album information are available there, as well as an extensive Bjork archive of music, reviews and a live concert.
