Incubus never ceases to put on a great show. Their songs flow into each other, and they pump up the crowds with their heavy rock sounds after the sappy ballads that make Brandon Boyd an infamous heartthrob in the rock world. This was my second time seeing the band live, the first being in Vegas at the outdoor venue at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and the show was just as incredible as ever. Incubus’ last album, “Monuments and Melodies”, was a compilation of their greatest hits along with some unreleased tracks. And even though the band didn’t debut any newer music, it’s still great to hear their classic songs and know that their fanbase will still appreciate and follow them on tour.

Cricket Wireless is a great venue for San Diego summer concerts. You may feel like you’re going to run into Tijuana at any moment while you make the drive deep onto the 805 but the outdoor venue may be one of the best in the city. The location of the venue is tucked at the base of a hillside and adjacent to a water park making for scenic and colorful backdrops.

San Diego marks the first stop of the Monuments and Melodies U.S. summer tour. I noticed early on in the show that frontman Brandon Boyd wasn’t doing a lot of talking or interacting with the audience. This evening was strictly business, almost like the band was working out any kinks before they really hit the road. However, right before Brandon and Mike played an acoustic version of “Drive,” Brandon looked over and said “I’ve known this guy since before we had pubes.” I think that single comment made up for the lack of friendly banter throughout the evening.

The band played all of their hits like “Pardon Me,” “Anna Molly,” “Stellar” and “Love Hurts.” The sound was clear and never too overpowering, the crowd came from all walks of life and recited the lyrics like it was nobody’s business. The only thing that I was really underwhelmed about was the animation that played behind the band during the show. The Vegas show was chockfull of colors and images that correlated with each song and sound but there was a definite lack of thought-provoking images that I remembered from the previous show. Other than that minor detail, the show definitely lived up to its status and it was great to see the band kick off their tour in our city.

At the end of the night, we somehow managed to score After Show passes and we met some avid Incubus fan, the tour dog Ginger, and a couple guys from the band. Brandon was missing in action but overall, it was one of the greatest concert experiences I’ve had this year.
