Trivium is currently gracing the second stage at Mayhem in 2009. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Corey Beaulieu to discuss all things Mayhem, Madden, and Shitzu’s.

Jessica: You are three days into Mayhem. How has it been treating you?

Corey Beaulieu : The most fun we’ve had on a summer tour in a long time. The first show we had a train wreck because our bass player couldn’t make it out to the first show. We didn’t have my guitar tech so we had loads of stuff breaking and everything that could possibly go wrong in a 30 minute time span did.  We worked through it and most people seemed to enjoy it. When stuff goes wrong we usually just improve and roll with it instead of getting pissed off and stopping. One time Matt’s guitar went out for half a song. He was trying to get it fixed so we got everybody to sing the song. Yesterday was great with no problems. We got the train back on track.

Jessica: Now in you’re in the desert where the sand might hurt.

Corey: I remember this place from Ozzfest with the big dust cloud in the pit and the infamous egg throwing of Maiden. Memories!

Jessica: Where has been your favorite place to play?

Corey: We just did one recently in Europe doing festivals over there and we did the Download Festival in England. We did (Download Festival)  in 2005 and 2006 and that was our big break. We opened the mainstage in 2005. This year we were asked to headline the second stage. We went out there and we haven’t played England in quite awhile. We  played the same time as Def Leppard and had 40,000 people there and it was just insane. It was one of the best shows we ever had in our lives.

In the states, there are different pockets like down in southern Texas. We have tons of fans in Mexico. We have never been to Mexico so they travel to San Antonio or Corpus Christi and they just go mental. We’ve had a lot of fun with those shows. Then there is New Mexico, it  is always a mother fucker. Everyone is coming off the Indian reservations and they are metal heads out there.

Jessica: Are you planning on playing Mexico?

Corey: We always try to fit it in at one point then it either conflicts with something or another. We are going to try and do it right after this tour because we are ending in Texas, but our drummer is getting married a week after Mayhem gets done, so we are like,  “Honeymoon in Mexico!”

Jessica: What is a fun or odd fact about the band that we may not know?

Corey: At the end of the tour we are going to have a Great Dane on the bus, so that should be interesting. We’ll have a Great Dane and a Shitzu!  Quirky? If I am into it, it’s normal. I am just straight up, have drinks, listen to metal, and watch sports. Matt is really into Final Fantasy, so he’s more of the World of Warcraft/Fantasy guy. He and Paul have a different sense of humor. They are really into that Tim and Eric Awesome show, and that’s either you laugh your ass off or just really confused. They are hard-core into it. I am just sometimes puzzled.

Jessica: Do you play Rock Band?

Corey: No. I am a Madden football life fanatic. My gaming shelf at home is Madden from 1994 to now with 5 copies of the same game, but for different systems so I can always play no matter where I am at. It’s the only game I really play. I am just waiting for the free shit. We were actually on the soundtrack last year and I didn’t get a free copy. The EA Sports building is right down the street from where I live. I should just go knock on their door. (laughs)
