Asobi Seksu Record Acoustic Album Rewolf Available November 10th on Polyvinyl

Perform Acoustic Show September 16th at Joe’s Pub in New York City

LAist : “Do not let her small stature fool you, Yuki Chikudate will tear you apart. She has the voice of an angel (and not the namby pamby naked cherub kind either. The old testament kind with fiery swords that descend upon you and blast your head off with the word of God.)”

SPIN **** (4 Stars) : “This Brooklyn group’s previous albums established them as shoegaze confectioners, molding candy swirls out of Yuki Chikudate’s soaring, translucent voice and guitarist James Hanna’s Kevin Shields–worshiping production. But here, Asobi Seksu do something My Bloody Valentine can’t — leave Shields behind. “Sing Tomorrow’s Praise” and “Me & Mary” evoke iciness over icing, with more expansive cool than insidious sweetness. And the duo’s seasick guitars (“Layers”), ethereal synths (“Gliss”), and Japanese lyricism (“Meh No Mae”) still provide plenty of geeky studio epiphanies.”

NYLON: “…the band makes music that sounds like daybreak. Think twinkling, shimmering, echoing, murmuring tracks. Even when the New York-based band was playing fuzzy shoegaze rock, they managed to a find a way to inject a bit of beauty into the simplest of pop songs.”

DCist: “Tiny vocalist Yuki Chikudate has a big voice, and her high notes soared over the band’s fuzzy guitar and bass and pounding drums.”

UNCUT **** (4 Stars): “Sumptuous slices of bliss-pop with an art-punk edge”

PLAN B : “After a period as America’s finest shoegaze revivalists, Asobi Seksu now leave genres behind and document the night sky”

CLASH : “‘Contenders for being one of the most inventive bands out there”

One of the last albums ever recorded at London’s renowned Olympic Studios (where The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Who have all recorded), Rewolf finds Asobi Seksu’s core duo—vocalist Yuki Chikudate and guitarist James Hanna—affording listeners a fresh take on songs spanning the band’s career. Here, Asobi Seksu replaces its sonic layer of guitars with beautiful new arrangements achieved mainly through the use of acoustic instruments.

At the urging of One Little Indian owner Derek Birkett, Asobi Seksu embraced the opportunity to record at Olympic Studios on an off day during its 2008 UK tour, only months before the 50-year old studio closed its doors for good. The end result of this session is the new album, Rewolf, a collection of songs that re-imagine the texturized dream-pop of the band’s three prior full-lengths (Hush, Citrus and Asobi Seksu). In addition, the album features tracks previously only available as B-sides and a gorgeous cover Hope Sandoval’s (Mazzy Star) “Suzanne.”

Later mixed by Billy Pavone (the touring bassist for Asobi Seksu) at his home studio in Brooklyn, Rewolf reflects on music from the group’s past with an eye toward its future. Although this recording marks a final chapter in the historic studio’s legacy, it also turns a new page for Asobi Seksu – one that witnesses the band adding renewed depth to its songwriting.

Over the next several months, the band will be performing a series of acoustic shows in various cities around the world. The debut show is September 16 in New York City at Joe’s Pub. Tickets are available for sale here:
