We arrived at the Bottom Lounge with the opening act just finishing their set. As we made our way up to the front of the stage we made a couple friends and talked to the crowd. Yvette and I were amazed at the number of people that had just found out last minute about the show. We spoke with a fan named Josh, from the Wrigley area, and he said he had just downloaded their newest album Memento Mori from iTunes and it was iTunes that showed there was a show tonight. Josh said, “Its Tuesday, what else is there to do on a Tuesday night?” We then laughed, but like Josh, many there are true loyal fans to Flyleaf.
The crowd was packed, loud, and energetic at the Bottom Lounge and the wall of screaming fan hit you like a bus as Lacey, Pat, Sameer, Jared, and James hit the stage. To be honest the band looked better this time around. I know that sounds crazy, but last time I saw them they were opening for Seether back in April of 2008. The always beautiful Lacey was wearing a hoodie and her trademark ripped jeans. It was true rock and roll! This time she wore a cute black lacy dress over her jeans. I am not saying it’s a bad thing. I am now certain the dress helps with her other trademark on stage…the spin! So I did panic a bit, because I turned to Yvette and said, “If they throw a piano onstage I am walking!” My biggest fear has been that Flyleaf would be pressured to be an Evanescence clone. Thank goodness that isn’t the case.
Lacey and the boys destroyed the stage and engaged with their fans. Flyleaf did not hesitate to break out the hits early in their set. It was the first time Lacey had spoken since they started the set and she said, “This is our love song for Jesus Christ.” They then proceeded into “All Around Me” off their self-debut album. They performed many new songs including “Chasm,” “Swept Away,” and “Arise.”
Lacey also scolded us last night…there was no way we could have avoided it. At the Bottom Lounge we hung our heads in shame as Lacey asked us where we were a couple weeks ago when they were at the same location for the listening party. She said, “We were here! Where were you?!” If we had only known Lacey! Here’s a recap of their listening parties accept you’ll notice Chicago is missing..*shame on us*
It was before they went into “Arise,” the last song of the night, which Lacey spoke about the band and their connection to God. She said with most sincerity, “God is amazing and loves us. We are no better than anyone here. God loves all of us here!” She also went into detail about being an atheist until she was 16 years old and about ready to end her life. She said, “Life was the worst (at 16).” She now realizes God’s purpose not just for herself but for others too. “God wants to use us for something amazing!” The crowd couldn’t have agreed more. Flyleaf left us with “Arise” and crowd left to sing the end as the band gracefully left the stage. They truly left us wanting more.
