Timbaland House of Blues

There were three “quotes of the night” as I like to call them at Sunday night’s (well, Monday morning’s) Timbaland concert at Chicago’s House of Blues. These three quotes/phrases were repeated by Timbaland’s DJ more times that I care to remember. Not a good sign that I left the show recalling the DJ’s ridiculously annoying shout-outs than Timbaland’s actual performance. Anyway, here we go…

1) “Get your merchandise!”

2) “Where’s all my single ladies at?”

3) Where’s all my Timbaland fans at?”

More photos of Timbaland presenting his Shock Value II album live in Chicago after the jump…

Timbaland House of BluesAttending a Timbaland performance is quite simply the same as dancing and singing along to the multiple songs the man has written and produced for both himself and other artists for more than a decade. Seriously though, I love the genius that is Timbaland and the music he creates, but he should stick to the studio and not the stage. A performer with stage presence he is not. In all honesty, Timbaland needs to drop the touring and performing components from his career aspirations. Once Tim arrives at the realization that his talents are best suited to remaining seated in the producer’s chair at his production company and recording studio, then the world will be better served. Needless to say, more amazing songs will be delivered to the public directly from Mr. Mosley. I love you Timbaland, but please give up the dream of being a rock star…

Wearing white Beats By Dr. Dre Studio High Definition Powered Isolation Headphones (with Powered Noise Cancellation), Timbaland broke up his set into two parts with an intermission. Yes, that’s correct…an intermission. Why was that necessary? I have no clue. Apparently act one of the Virginia native’s performance was dedicated to his new material from most recent release Shock Value II. The second half of the show was a nonstop medley of every major hit Tim has written and produced (and been featured on) for major recording artists such as Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake.

During the first half of the show, Timbaland provided the audience with some much needed (and appreciated) visual entertainment in the form of a large rectangular video screen. Placed portrait-style at the front of stage left, the LED display panel projected pre-recorded images of the artists featured on all of Timbaland’s Shock Value II tracks. With Mr. Mosley lacking any captivating MC skills, I found myself unable to tear my eyes away from the LED screen. By the end of Tim’s set, I had seen stars like Jet, Drake, Esthero, Katy Perry, Keri Hilson, SoShy, Nelly Furtado, Chad Kroeger, and Justin Timberlake singing and dancing along to the songs specific to them.

Unfortunately, Timbaland did not perform my favorite song from his first album Shock Value, “One & Only” featuring Fall Out Boy. Nor did he choose to include “Give It To Me” featuring Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake in his set this past Sunday/Monday. This came as quite a surprise to me, seeing as how the song was a huge hit off of Shock Value and received tons of radio airplay. Plus, it’s another one of my favorites from Tim’s first solo record. Around 3:30AM, the House of Blues staff gradually cut off the power in the venue in the hopes that Timbaland would get the hint to end his set. With the stage lights completely shut down, Timbaland had no choice but to perform a capella if he wanted to continue with his playlist of hit songs. Finally admitting defeat, Tim’s final words of the night were as follows: “Thank you Chicago! Home of Kanye West!” Yes, well right now Chicago isn’t all that proud of the fact that we gave the world Mr. West.

Final note to Timbaland: more time in studio, less time on stage. Thank you for the timeless tracks!

I love me some timbaland but was disappointed too with this performance.

not only did he not go on til 2am, but that intermission was not needed. half the crowd left during it!

and one more issue. I understand sibling relationships, but i would not bring my brother on tour with me if all he does is lipsync! i’ve never ever seen a ‘rapper’ lipsync in my life.

keep it up timbaland, you are one hell of a producer and a decent rapper, but keep your creative flow in the studio not the stage.

This was a pretty funny article, haha, and i absolutely do not like Kanye West because of what he did to Taylor Swift, I’m a big Taylor Swift fan, and I did not like Kanye dissing her on stage like that haha. I also agree Timbaland should stay in the studio, and not on the stage. That’s crazy that there was an intermission!

  6. Tara says:

You crack me up. I do agree, though, many performers out there touring now should simply not be performing live. They’re studio artists–GREAT ones, but STUDIO artists, not stage artists, just the same.

The top photo is awesome! It’s funny, though, these pictures make it pretty clear he’s not meant for stage. He’s just standing there–shoulders hunched–mic in hand. Bo-ring.

The 3 quotes of the DJ bit was really funny. Get your merchandise!!
