Out Now!

The Dead Hub talked with Sheila Carabine of Dala about touring, the new album, and of course, how do two long-time friends really get along in small quarters while touring.

Dala, aka the Dala Girls, is a duo that I stumbled across several months ago.  The dynamic Canadian duo of friends, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, was named after taking the two last letters of their first names.

More of our talk with Sheila and Dala Tour dates after the jump…

Their latest release is Everyone is Someone. They are touring extensively across Canada and the United States and are even gracing the stage of a couple major festivals right here in the US. The highlight of their career happened at a festival in the US. “Playing on the main stage of the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival was the highlight of my life,” Sheila explains, “We went on right before Arlo Guthrie, and we were back stage with Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Pete Seeger. It was so inspiring!”

As for the album, Everyone is Someone really hit me as one of the great singer songwriter album’s I’ve heard is ages. It only took one listen and I was taken in by the melody of the two singer/songwriters.  The song that really stands out for me is “Lonely Girl.” The song hit home and lyrics are dead on and paint the picture of a very desperate girl who validates herself by being with a stranger.  The same picture is painted for the man in the song that deems himself “cool” by the number of women he takes in his bed and “he doesn’t even know their names.”

What really inspired Everyone is Someone? Sheila explained, “Amanda and I write directly from our own life experiences, and “Lonely Girl” is a really good example of how the songwriting process can serve as good therapy. We wrote that song after working with someone who was extremely sexist. It was a very negative experience, but if anything it made us stronger, and gave us something to write about.”

The entire album is incredibly moving. Everyone is Someone is packed with catchy choruses such as the main chorus in “Alive.”  I won’t even get into the “Levi Blues” that starts with the song piped through a transistor radio.  The song takes me back to the good oldies classics.

So what is Dala planning for the rest of the year? “We have a pretty packed show schedule, and we’re looking forward to playing a lot of shows in the States this year. We’ll be appearing at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in April, and it looks like we’ll be doing an extensive tour in California in September. We are also going to be playing our first ever show in the UK this summer: The Rhythm Festival in Bedford http://www.rhythmfestival.com/.”

The real question is how do two long-time friends stay friends and keep a balance of business in friendship in their life? Sheila remarks, “I feel really lucky to work with Amanda. She is an amazing artist and a great friend. I think we’ve managed to stay balanced because we make each other laugh so hard on the drives to and from shows. We are able to switch gears easily between work and play, and that keeps us both grounded.” Sheila also tongue-in-cheek notes, “My biggest hang-up is that Amanda has the metabolism of a rabbit, and so she can eat whatever she wants without ever exercising. Not that I’m bitter or anything…”

Sheila’s Favorites:(FYI: Sheila has the darker hair)

Tracks off the album: “Horses,” “Stand in Awe,” and “Lonely Girl.”
Favorite Places to Perform: “The Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island was a once in a lifetime experience, so I have pretty amazing memories of that place.”

Why these two aren’t gracing the stage at the likes of Lilith Fair and have more fanfare is beyond me.  Canada really knows how to raise great musicians and these two are at the top of my list.
