ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL, the heralded hard rock and metal event of the summer, is swiftly becoming the heavy music fans’ summertime rite of passage. Today, the 4th annual summertime juggernaut announces the 2011 line-up with DISTURBED, GODSMACK and MEGADETH, joined by MACHINE HEAD, IN FLAMES, TRIVIUM, and many more of today’s most electrifying artists. The tour will make a 26 date trek across the country beginning on July 9th at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California. The 4th annual ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL will also feature ROCKSTAR METAL MULISHA JUMP TEAM, the World’s Greatest Freestyle Motocross team.

Earlier this week the Black Eyed Peas debuted the world’s first 360-degree mobile music video.  Created by will.i.apps, the “BEP360″ app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch takes fans inside “The Time (Dirty Bit)” with 360-degree motion control and augmented reality.  The app was initially available for $2.99 but it is now on sale for $0.99 for a limited time!

Art Of Dying is a five-piece rock band fronted by Jonny Hetherington. The Vancouver, Canada based group is the newest signing to Reprise Records/Intoxication Records, the label started by David Draiman and Dan Donegan of the multi-platinum selling band Disturbed. Art of Dying has completed recording in Los Angeles with producer Howard Benson for their 2011 worldwide debut, and they are thrilled to now be part of the Warner family. MIXTAPE: Tennis Mixtape for International Tapes

Two on a big ocean.

Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They planned to buy a small sailboat and spend the next year living aboard and traveling exclusively under sail. For years this dream was carefully nurtured while preparations were made. Learning to sail and selecting a boat is difficult to accomplish from a landlocked state. Their nautical self-education consisted of a steady diet of how-to books and videos.

They were motivated by stories shared by sailors like Joshua Slocum, or Lin and Larry Pardey. On a sailboat minimalism transcends efficiency. There are no schedules, no agendas, or the many concerns that come with modern life. A sailor cares only for the direction of the wind and the condition of the water. Riley and Moore did not want their perception of the world to be shaped by spreadsheets, or facts gleaned in classrooms. They wanted a life of experience unmediated by people or things, a life of intimate participation with their environment. Cell phones, television, household appliances, the conveniences of modern life were traded for simplicity and contentment. A return to evenings spent indulging in the profound silence of the remotest regions, far from the yellowy glow of civilization.

Voyaging along the North Atlantic coastline for seven months at an average speed of five miles an hour lends itself to reordering one’s priorities. The long way is the beautiful one. The hard way is the most rewarding. Two years after completing their 2500 nautical mile voyage, Riley and Moore’s experience has led them to seek out a new endeavor. Their music bears the mark of months spent alone with the sea and each other. It is tinged with the sweet affection of new lovers. It bears the uncluttered aesthetic of time spent in remote and uninhabited regions. Their music is a modest attempt to translate an old truth rediscovered.

Apocalyptica Premiere New Video For “Not Strong Enough” on Noisecreep.com

Finland’s legendary orchestral rock band and Jive recording artist, Apocalyptica, are currently premiering the video for their latest single “Not Strong Enough” (Click to view video) on AOL Noisecreep.  The song which includes vocals by Doug Robb of Hoobastank is the follow-up to the hit single “End of Me,” which featured vocals by Gavin Rossdale. Other guests on their latest album, 7th Symphony, are Lacey from Flyleaf, Gojira’s Joe Duplantier, and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. Aside from the vocal tracks, the album features the group’s most dynamic symphonic instrumentals to date.

Apocalyptica‘s North American tour will launch March 3rd in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the Culture Room and run through March 27th in Dallas, TX at the House Of Blues. Apocalyptica will be touring in support of, 7th Symphony, which came out August 24th and debuted at No. 31 on the Billboardalbum chart. Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age) produced the majority of the record and Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach) produced an additional two tracks.

DELUKA Announce U.S. Tour & NYC Shows!

Hot on the heels of an incredible year that saw the release of their electrifying debut album, You Are the Night, Brooklyn-by-way-of-Birmingham band Deluka have announced a co-headlining U.S. tour with Fefe Dobson. Set to kick off in Pittsburg, PA on February 14th, the string of dates at Hard Rock venues across the country will be preceded by select New York City shows in early February.

Hotly tipped by NME and Dazed and Confused in their native UK, Deluka showed the US what all the fuss is about with the release of their debut full-length album, You Are the Night (Vel/RED),in late 2010. Linkin Park Brings a Thousand Suns to Chicago

This night belonged to Linkin Park and only Linkin Park for several reasons.  The opening band Does It Offend You, Yeah? had several technical difficulties in their short set along with poor lighting leaving the crowd scratching their heads, “Are we at a rock show?”  Sorry guys, but Yeah, I was offended.  The 2nd band, Pendulum fared much better with tons of energy, but still left me wanting an opening band that could rock hard.  Pendulum did a fair attempt at trying to cover Metallica’s “Master of Puppet,” but lacked the punch of a rock classic this song is.

After a quick turn-around Linkin Park hit the stage to a huge cheer and roar from the crowd.  They opened with “The Requiem” before launching into “Faint.”

Most of the first half of the set was from third and fourth album, with a few from the 2nd album. Even with the slower tempo songs, they held the audience in their hands singing all the newer songs and swaying to the electronic beats.

 

The stars of the show were Mike Shinoda & Chester Bennington, both taking turns to sing, and at times, playing the drums, guitars and synthesizers. Shinoda’s raps sounded like they were pulled off a hip-hop beat and then off to his smooth vocals.   He even went falsetto and sounding like a small child.  Chester prowled around the stage, jumping up and down and at one point went into the crowd to sing.  When a crowd surfer came close, he grabbed his hand and pulled him close to sing/scream.

Towards the encore, Mr. Hahn was having some technical problems with his turntable, but that did not stop him from having fun and doing funny moves on his platform.  Towards the end of the show, they finally played “In the End,” from one of their biggest albums, Hybrid Theory, followed by “Bleed It Out” to end the set.    They came out and did a six song encore that reminded me of the old Linkin Park with mosh pits forming and the crowd jumping up and down as they played the older tunes to finish off the show.

 

 

The band itself is very tight after so many years on the road and they all play different instruments throughout the show.   By far one of the better concerts of the year but kept wishing I saw them when they toured with the first album.

The Dirty Heads Tour Dates

California alternative rockers The Dirty Heads have announced 2011 early spring tour dates. Known for their seamless blend of rock, hip hop and reggae, the Dirty Heads were chosen as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s Best New Bands of 2010 and are ready to take 2011 by storm. He’ll Make you Laugh, He’ll Make You Angry, but Most of All, He’ll Freak You Out!

The morning started as Joe Diamond, a paranormal magician, boggled the minds of Tom Kief and Lisa Tyler from The Tom and Lisa Morning Show on 95 WIIL ROCK in Wisconsin.  Joe sealed up a card in an envelope for Lisa.  He asked Lisa to cut through one of the cards in a full deck to read her future. After telling her about her future, he took it one step further by having the card in the envelope and the one she cut in the deck  match.  It’s priceless to hear the amazement of the radio DJ’s with his stunts.

Joe also performed an audience trick and it involved pointing fingers.  Joe had everyone start with their ring finger and fate would decide which finger they would end up pointing with.  I guess everyone is great with their fingers because Joe guess exactly which finger the audience, and DJs, ended up on. In true Tom Kief fashion, Tom told Joe which finger he should have everyone end up on when the trick ends. I think you can use your imagination as which finger that would be.

Joe also has a knack for guessing cards. He amazed Tom, Lisa, and Duco by naming all the cards Duco picked and held in his hands.  Joe doesn’t miss a beat and hopefully he’ll duck when Tom tries to lay the beat down on him.

The final act on the radio was the bending act! Joe had listeners  bending metal objects in their car and in their house.  It turns out that the average “Joe” can actually bend metal! The hilarity ensued with Tom and Lisa continuing to not believe what was before their eyes.  Video will be posted soon!

Tomorrow night 95 WIIL Rock present Joe Diamond at the FUEL Room at Austin’s Saloon in Libertyville.  Tickets are only $15 and include Comedian Jimmy McHugh and Tom Kief as MC for the night. This is a 21 and over show.  If you’ve heard Joe on 95 WIIL Rock you haven’t experienced anything yet until you see the show.

Multi-Platinum rock band TRAPT has just released a new Facebook application that offers their fans something new and special. This application not only allows fans to stream their entire current album No Apologies, but it also has a feature that allows fans to pick the album’s next single.

Over the past decade, TRAPT has scored a string of hits, beginning with 2002′s  Billboard alternative song of the decade ”Headstrong” and continuing through “Sound Off”, the lead single from No Apologies.

Anyone who installs the app to their Facebook  profile will be able to vote on which song from No Apologies TRAPT takes to the radio airwaves next. This is one of the first times that a major artist has allowed their fans to control something this important through a social media platform. When the application is shared, it leaves a message on the user’s news stream (viewable to all their friends) stating that they have just voted for TRAPT’s new single. Fans can also use the application to view TRAPT’s upcoming tour dates.


No Apologies was released last October and debuted in the Top Ten of Billboard’s Rock Albums chart.

ILL Nino brings Latin Metal to Milwaukee

What could be the coldest night this year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, ILL Nino turned the heat up with some molten metal.

Rapper Wiz Khalif played in the sold out Eagles Ballroom, which is in the huge ballroom upstairs and then there were more bands playing at the Rave’s other side stages. This left ILL Nino the basement stage to perform.

With a smaller crowd for this show, it did not stop the fans from banging their heads and making themselves heard for the “Restore the Insanity” tour featuring Ekotren, Fashion Bomb, Anew Revolution and headliner, ILL Nino.

ILL Nino opened the set with “If You Still Hate Me.” Throughout the night, percussion sounds of Latin America were thrown into a mixture of Spanglish and metal, proving why ILL Nino is known as one of the best Latin Metal bands out there today. One of the best guitar players in metal, Ahrue Luster and Cristian Machado, doing vox that include growls, screams, and melodic vocals prove that you can’t count them out after ten years in the business and two management changes – to the one they call home, now Victory Records.

ILL Nino played over an hour set and 16 to 19 songs were available to choose from each night. The crowd was in it from the start, with the middle being reserved for the moshers.

For Metal fans out there, don’t miss this tour when it comes around your town.

The Concretes at Bowery Ballroom

Twas a bitter, bitter winter’s night in New York City, but Sweden’s The Concretes defrosted the crowd like a good mug of glögg. The kids were bopping to the jaunty tunes of their latest album WYWH, “All Day” and “Good Evening”, as well as back catalog favorites like “Say Something New”.  Former drummer Lisa Milberg has taken over the uneviable task of replacing the lead vocals from the departed Victoria Bergsman (Taken By Trees).  The two tackle songs in a slightly different approach.  While Bergsman sang with a pang of effortless emotion, Milberg relishes the spotlight and brings a light hearted chirp.  WYWM is a bit of a departure from past albums with more emphasis on dance synths, which lends to Milberg’s delivery.  Lisa can also bring it down a notch to melancholy, as she demonstrated with her rendition of “I Wish We’d Never Met”.

This reviewer has quite the affinity to Ms. Bergsman, but I must say Ms. Milberg wins over the latter with her stage presence.  While Victoria would shy away from eye contact, Lisa engaged the New York audience praising the city for having the best dogs.   Alas, don’t expect a transatlantic move for The Concretes.  Lisa confessed she could not handle the copious mimosas at breakfast everyday.

The concert culminated with an encore, in which Lisa covered Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Military Madness”.  As if that was not enough of a treat, they played old favorite “You Can’t Hurry Love” after title track “WYWH”.  The Concretes are on the upswing post-Bergsman.  Though they probably will always be the former band of Victoria Bergsman, they are craving out a new chapter for the evolving band.

For a Good Time Call Brad!

Ok so the big news from last night was some quarterback from a certain football team that’s going to lose on Sunday joined Brad onstage for “Still a Guy.” Yeah…Go Bears!

Now that that is out of the way, Brad’s H2O Frozen Over Tour kicked off in Green Bay last night. Brad sure didn’t disappoint especially with stage presence and pleasing his fans. There was a catwalk in the middle of the stage along with two mini runways off to each side of the stage. The two runways on the side of the stages actually dipped into the crowd. For those who purchased floor tickets looked very happy as Brad, with guitar in hand, walked right into the crowd on the floor.

The stage antics didn’t end there. The show also featured a life-size puppet of Brad. In true Paisley form, the videos that running on the back screens as he plays are down-right-out hilarious, thus the puppet. You’ll understand when you purchase your ticket and head to the show.

Brad also brought a pool along that was turned into a stage. For those die-hard, yet on a budget, Paisley fans, there isn’t a bad seat in the house, and Brad makes sure of that with all the ramps and the pool stage near the back of the arena. The man knows how to put on a show.

During the set Brad tells the crowd he’s bringing the tour back for the summer. He also called Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney “Wusses” for not playing Green Bay in the winter. Brad also paid tribute to the Packers in one of the video montages. I guess there is a reason why they completely skipped over Chicago, because I don’t know how he would explain himself. I kid….maybe. As mentioned before Aaron Rodgers did join Brad onstage for “Still a Guy.” Aarron looked lost trying to keep up with the singing. He eventually gave up and just started hi-fiving the crowd. I wouldn’t quit your day job Aaron, oh I take that back! Maybe you should and before Sunday please.

Did I mention it was in the negatives outside last night? This was truly the “Frozen Over Tour.”

Darius, Country Looks Good on You!

It’s never easy making a transition in life especially when that transition is moving from mainstream rock to country music. I’ve read the articles poking fun at Darius and I’ve heard all the Hootie jokes, but look who has the last laugh.  Darius recently released his second country album Charleston, SC 1966. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard Country Albums Chart at #1 with over 100,000 album sold in the first week. If that weren’t enough, the first single from that album, “Come Back Song,” has also reached the #1 spot on the Billboard and Mediabase Country Singles Charts, making this his fourth #1 hit since his release of Learn To Live in 2008. He’s performed at Stagecoach back in 2008 and now he’s the opener for Brad Paisley on the winter leg of the H2O Frozen Over Tour.

Darius walked on the stage at Resch Center in Green Bay last night to a standing ovation.  Darius looked country, walked country, and sang country.   He even had the females in the crowd swooning as he took to the catwalk singing “Purple Rain.”  He also had a few sly dance moves that hypnotized the ladies.  Watch out! Maybe Darius should have put on his cowboy boots years ago.

Darius did perform Hooties biggest hits such as “Let Her Cry,” “Only Want to Be with You,” and “Hold My Hand.”  The fans loved it, but if he didn’t play them I don’t think they would have been disappointed.  The fans were already singing along to “Alright” and the “Come Back Song.”  It was the Hank Williams Jr. Cover of “Family Tradition” that set a permanent bond with Darius and his fans the Resch.  It also solidified his status in the country music family.
