Milwaukee is Run Through the Static Cycle

Static Cycle on Tour with Drowning Pool
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

Static Cycle is:
Jared Navarre – Lead Vocals
Josh Witham – Lead Guitar
Dennis Smith – Drummer
Johnny Nabors – Bass
Danny Resnick – Keyboard

Static Cycle 142 copy

The band, Static Cycle, hail from the state of Alaska, known for long winters, beautiful landscapes, and the Palins. This young band, for the last two plus years, has made its mark in Alaska and is now about to take the lower 48 states by storm.

Static Cycle is out to prove they can rock with the best of them by going on tour with Hard Rockers, Drowning Pool & Pop Evil.  Last year’s single, “Inside This World of Mine,” Static Cycle made news by fellow Alaskan, Bristol Palin, being in the video.

As they got ready to take the stage in the basement hall of The Rave, you wondered if they could pull off their unique sound they have on their EP album, Part 1: Hydrate, as well as their harder first album, When We Meet Again. As singer Navarre hit the stage, the girls were screaming with his rock star looks and killer vocals. Resnick was on Keys and Witham provided the soundscapes, as well as Nabors on bass, and drummer/rapper Smith, they were able to recreate the EP sound live.

The setlist leaned more on the hard songs. The30 minutes they had included songs  “I’ll Take you Back,” “Pressure,” “Disguise” and “Inside This World of Mine.” Being the first band on stage is never easy especially with four more bands still to play,  but Static Cycle had the crowd going and even mixed in a little Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, and Smith doing a little rapping.

Towards the end of the set, Navarre jumped into the crowd and crowd surfed. Afterward, the band stayed signing merchandise for the fans until the very end of Drowning Pool’s set.

If you’re going to this show, make sure you come early to check out this fresh new band, Static Cycle.

JHud Rises Above

Jennifer Hudson I remember meJennifer Hudson
I Remember Me
Arista Records
Released: 3/22/2011

Jennifer Hudson’s name has become synonymous with the word tragedy, unlike most celebs and musicians today this sadly has been through no fault of her own. As she releases her sophmore album many expect to hear and will even seek out the song for her mother, then the song for her brother, and the heart wrenching song for her nephew, but will find themselves empty handed; as there is a limited amount of weakness or grovelling here.

Everyone in America seems to love a tragedy. Shocking stories of celebrities’ heart ache and and their health issues grip us as if they are our own struggles. Events like what happened to JHud make us tuck our children in a little tighter at night. It’s a startling event that makes us turn to our fighting partner and apologize and say I love you instead of the previously planned hateful words. We lived Jennifer’s pain as they searched for her nephew and broke the news about her mother and brother. Now as we listen to her new album it’s nearly impossible to separate those events and solidify the artist and the music from what she had to live through. Yet she handles the fallout of her life with such grace and overcoming strength that for just a moment you lose yourself in song, which one might suspect Jennifer did in recording the album.

All in all it is just a good solid album with JHud’s stellar pipes present at all times. The title track is easily the most standout of any song on the album. The track is based on a poem Jennifer wrote and is one of the few songs that addresses her struggle with overcoming loss. It blantantly stares in the face of her stages of grief and extendes a middle finger to sadness as she finds her way, again. It’s an inspirational track to anyone who has ever lost someone and marks Jennifer’s first writer’s credit. I Remember Me will be released as a single on May 1st, 2011 and should lift to the top of the charts where it belongs. In the face of it all JHud has created a feel good album, personifying Per Aspera Ad Astra. Bravo Girl.

Ellie Goulding Shines in Chicago

Ellie Goulding
Lincoln Hall – Chicago, IL

Ellie Goulding lincoln hall chicago 2

After much buzz from the blogosphere, Ellie Goulding is finally touring the U.S. since finally releasing her highly anticipated album Lights.

Ellie Goulding is able to connect with fans through writing about personal experiences. Many of her songs are about heartache and love, a topic well known by many of us. Goulding did not always see singing as a career opportunity. It wasn’t until she found the confidence, after winning a university talent competition while studying Politics, English, and Drama at the University Kent in Canterbury, which she decided to give it a chance. She teamed up with an electro-pop producer, moved to London, and began writing songs. Since then her songs like “Starry Eyed“, “Under the Sheets,” “The Writer,” and “Guns and Horses” have become hits.

Ellie Goulding is finally showing her Chicago fans much love. Playing to a sold out show, her fans in return received her warmly. They were very supportive even helping her sing through songs whenever her voice would strain due to sickness. She humbly chatted up the audience in between songs and even admitted to needing her apple vodka and tea to get her through. You could sense the strong connection she had with her fans as she made them laugh and “aww” with her down-to-earthiness.

She opened up strong with her hit “Under the Sheets” and finished off the show with her biggest hit “Starry Eyed,” which really got the crowd moving and singing along.

Throughout the show she made sure to let all her fans know how much she appreciated their support through her sickness. She expressed much disappointment in herself tweeting how much she enjoyed the show even though it was not her best. She even took it upon herself to make it up saying, “And I promise I will come back to Chicago in the summer and do another show and absolutely rage. Hold me to that xxx.” Keep an eye out for that summer show; it’s bound to sell out too.

Artist to Watch: Natalia Kills

Natalia Kills Milwaukee 2122011 6 frontNatalia Kills has recently been on tour opening up for pop star Robyn, and that where I first heard her music.  She was pushing her single “Mirrors” and when I say push I mean she was giving it away for free if you said hello to her at the merch booth.  I am not really big on singles, but “Mirrors” had me at the first bar.  It’s produced by and features Akon.

Her debut album, Perfectionist, is due out this summer and she has some major superstars backing her album.   Being on’s imprint label isn’t too bad for a talented young lady who is just 24 years old.

Natalia also just released a teaser video trailer for her new song “Wonderland,” You can catch that here.

For her live show, it was amazing. Are you sitting down for this one? Natalia actually sings! Yes, she sings and she can dance and not get winded. I guess that’s the plus side to only being 24 years old. The downside to her show in Milwaukee is her set was only 3 songs long.  That particular night it was Robyn’s comeback from cancelling several previous shows including a big show in Chicago.  The show started an hour and a half later than scheduled and Natalia Kills was cut short.

I know next time she comes around I’ll be there for it and I recommend you do the same.

Everest was formed back in 2007 in Los Angeles, California. It only took one year for the band to record their first album, Ghost Notes.  The guys admit that Ghost Notes was recorded in just two weeks and then they headed out on tour.  Their newest album, On Approach, was release last May and the band is now “seasoned” and tighter and it’s reflected on the album.  Frontman, Russell Pollard, noted about the new album, “Now it’s guys who’ve actually struggled together and survived some tight spaces, cramped hotel rooms, some arguments and some really, really good times. There was a lot of collaboration, and we weren’t afraid to do anything.”

Everest High Noon Saloon

Everest is out on tour promoting On Approach and they hit the very intimate venue High Noon Saloon last night in Madison.  The crowd was small, typical for an early Tuesday evening, but that didn’t hinder the band from putting on a great show.  Their tightly-knit sound enveloped the room as each note seemed to complement the previous in an almost dizzying blend of music.  Though the entire band were quite competent, bassist Elijah Thomson’s performance stood out as his bass lines danced among the other riffs.  These guys gelled and were a joy to see perform live.

They still have several dates on the road. If they are near you it’ll make for a great night of rock music.

If you check out Everest’s website isn’t just an ordinary website. Here you can download photos, setlists, and the entire shows from Everest.  Right now 2010 shows are available to download for free.

Volbeat went Beyond Hell/Above Heaven to Bring Chicago to its Knees

House of Blues-Chicago, IL

Volbeat is:
Michael Poulsen – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Anders Kjølholm – bass guitar, backing vocals
Jon Larsen – drums, percussion
Thomas Bredahl – lead guitar, backing vocals

After being at the House of Blues last week, I saw that Volbeat would be playing with The Damned Things and could not miss this show. Never seeing either band live before, my first impression was why is Volbeat headlining over The Damned Things? Now knowing they are big overseas, were certified platinum in their home country Denmark, and have opened for Metal/Rock gods Metallica and AC/DC it makes more sense. They are still have not reached the success in the USA as they deserve, but they are out on tour now to prove they will be a force to be reckoned with.

It is very hard to pinpoint what genre of rock music Volbeat is – be it Metalbilly mixed with sounds of the Stray Cats on steroids or Metallica without the intricate guitar work or solos, or even Johnny Cash on meth doing a metal album. I dare you to pigeon hole them.

The latest release, Beyond Hell/Above Heaven, is their 4th studio album and gives them enough material to fill a 1 ½ hr plus set. Drummer Jon Larsen came out with sticks in the air to sit on his double bass drum kit and the crowd roared their approval, as the rest of the group ripped into “The Human Instrument.”  They transitioned to, “Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood,” not allowing the crowd to settle down to and you could feel the floor moving up and down, as everyone bounced. With the twin guitar attack filling the air with that thick, distinct Gibson guitar sound, they continued with “Heaven Nor Hell.” Lead singer, Poulsen looked like a character from a Quentin Tarantino movie played to the crowd. Even though they are still new to touring the U.S., they played like the veterans they are.

Lead guitar player, Bredahl, and bass player, Kjolholm, took turns going from one side of the stage to the other and at times, bumping into each other and spinning around laughing as they bounced away.  As much fun as the band and the crowd were having, you could not help but feel like you were watching a band about to make its mark on the music scene.

As I walked around the venue, I bumped into the guitar player for the metal band, Dirge Within and we both talked about how amazing this band was and he told me how they bring such a fresh sound to metal scene. I made me realize that for a band that’s been around for close to ten years, the music can still sound new.

As Volbeat ended the night they did a cover of Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want to Be with You.” I mean what metal band do you know can get away with this and still look badass?

Volbeat will be touring for another month in the States before heading back home to Denmark, along with some big festivals overseas and according to Bredahl and Larsen; they want to come back in the summer time.

If you’re looking for something different from all the tours out there now, then you won’t want to miss a beat in seeing VOLBEAT.

Lil Wayne opens tour in Lil Providence

Lil Wayne w/ Nicki Minaj
I Am Still Music Tour
Dunkin Donuts Center – Providence, RI
Lil Wayne w/ Nicki Minaj I Am Still Music Tour

When I was younger during the golden years of hip hop all that inspired me in rap was only available in one place: a cassette tape. Last week I caught myself trying to very passionately explain this fact to my 14 year old cousin. A sentence came out of my mouth that started with “When I was young…” and I gasped.. I realized in that moment that two important things had taken place. I have become officially old, and hip hop has become officially BAD. To my left someone overheard me and asked my age to gauge how serious I was about my hip hop, and to better know which artists raised me. We were instantly sharing daps and hugs reminiscing about how you would never hear Wu-Tang clan on the pop radio, how tribe called quest made you get up and bounce, and how only the lost boys could have told you that story about Renee. Memories. How sad it was that gone are the days of jolting your body into motion from simply hearing two simple starting beats (Try me.. Let me know if anything today makes you feel like these songs did. I’m talking to kids who grew up in the 90s right now.) When hip hop had a message, a story of a struggle to tell, and the artists weren’t just puppets of who the suits at the labels want them to be, they were rappers with heartache, not entertainers with a meal ticket.

Lil Wayne w/ Nicki Minaj I Am Still Music TourI was raised with Biggie and Pac. Men who were ahead of their time and left us with timeless hiphop classics. There are few artists like that who we are here today, and even then those artists can only come through, sometimes. Jay-Z has a catalog of solid story telling hip hop jams to rely on, as does Eminem and Nas, and maybe 50 cent. He’s told us before not to forget him and after seeing him live I will now officially include Weezy in that short list.

Last week I caught Lil Wayne’s first concert appearance since his prison sentencing and was accompanied by my 14 year old baby cousin. Lil Wayne put on a respectable classic hip hop show with the ambiance of old school hip hop artists all over it. He respectfully thanked God, and his fans multiple times. He shared his spotlight with his lablemates, and this brings me to my one caveat of his stage performance. Lil Tunechi gets the crowd pumped up with his best songs, tastefully remade with live musicians – guitars, drums, bass, and dj and then all of a sudden the energy of the I am still music tour dies.. and out comes a young, young money artist and Wayne has a backstage nap for an hour. This happened twice and it was a major energy killer of the show. Maybe if Drake came out instead of Nicki Minaj or Shanell It would have maintained the energy in the crowd – yet for some they seemed unaffected…

Nicki Minaj is for the children, because she is in one word: Theatrical. The crowd seemed diversely split in age brackets, those above the age of 18 were there for Wayne and anyone still in high school was there for Nicki. All underage males were simply there to give respect to her fresh butt implants. Nicki Minaj’s performance was utterly and brutally painful to endure. She is Broadway meets nickelodeon, and should never be filed under Hip or Hop but only cheesey Pop-Hop, aka: you will never hold Lil Kim, Mc Lyte, or even Lady Sovereign’s jock. I’d even go so far as to say that Neneh Cherry could take you in her weakest bullafo stance.

I am glad to say that wayne remains an talented and enjoyable rapper. He was an engaging performer, and a real entertainer without any crayola factor involved. If you are a hip hop head and find yourself free you should defiantly check out the show as it rolls through your city and pray that the tour is sans Nicki Threeway and you are lucky enough to get Drake Cakes instead, else bring a deck of cards to entertain yourself during the prolonged Barbie break.

Band unveils behind-the-scenes video featuring live footage of current single “Starships & Apocalypse”

Video: “Starships & Apocalypse” behind the scenes & live

Unwritten Law has also released a behind-the-scenes video containing live footage of their current hit “Starships & Apocalypse” in addition to personal musings from the individual band members.

Swan is Unwritten Law’s first album of new material since 2005’s Here’s to the Mourning. Marred by drugs, alcohol and personal struggles, Unwritten Law has channeled their problems into writing and have crafted one of the most personal records of their career. Anthemic songs such as lead single “Starships and Apocalypse” and “Dark Dayz” make this record the catchiest Unwritten Law record yet.

Unwritten Law will be touring heavily in support of Swan. Fresh off a West Coast run and Australia tour, they will embark on a North American tour on April 13th with Authority Zero, followed by the VANS Warped Tour, where they will perform over 20 dates through the end of July.

Blackguard Creates Japan Relief Fund Drive

In the week before the release of their highly anticipated album Firefight, Montreal’s Blackguard have orchestrated a donation drive to benefit the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami victims, with all proceeds going directly to the Red Cross. While all those with even a remote connection to current news feel empathy, we must band together as a global community to help our fellow man in this time of need. Blackguard released the following statement via their Facebook page:

“Spending as much time as we do driving around the country gives us a lot of time to talk to each other. One of these recent talks was about how to make a small “dent” in the pain that is being experienced right now in Japan with the Earthquake and Tsunami. Adding the fact that one of our managers was caught in the middle of the 2004 Asian Tsunami, this all hit very close to home for us. So, we set up this way to make a donation and are asking all of our fans, other bands, promoters we play for, and just about anyone else out there to feel free to donate as much as you can for such a special cause. When we return from our European tour the middle of April and before we leave for the Symphony X tour the following week, we will make an announcement of the full donation we are sending and give special name mention to the 10 highest donors.”

For more ways to donate, please visit:

Please spread the word about this cause in dire need of global support.

Band, Management, Record Company, Attorney And Fans Completely In The Dark On This Company And Their Announcement

Los Angeles, CA – March 23, 2011 – Metallica today announced that all announcements made on their behalf via Writers Group Film Corp. and their subsidiary Front Row Networks, Inc. are false.  Writers Group issued a press release on March 22, 2011 announcing “the acquisition of several hours of unique Metallica 3D & 2D concert video footage for distribution.”

“Metallica owns and controls its recorded performances and Creeping Death Music owns the vast majority of any music embodied in Metallica Recordings,” said the band’s attorney Peter Paterno.  “Pretty much any legitimate business would have contacted us to see how Metallica felt about it.  Maybe these guys just forgot.”

“We are very happy to have bolstered the Writers Group Film Corp. stock price by using the Metallica name,” quipped Marc Reiter from Metallica’s management, Q Prime.  “We only wish they would have told us sooner so we could have bought some.”

Doobie Brothers Call for Fan Submissions for New Music Video

The Doobie Brothers and HOR Entertainment, with help from Cisco Telepresence, will offer fans an opportunity to win a family reunion as the Grand Prize of the band’s Far From Home contest, running now at   Fans are asked to submit videos that illustrate emotional moments of passage in their families’ lives, like a child heading off to college or a soldier returning from a tour of duty.  Winning clips will be used in the final edit of the band’s video for latest single “Far From Home,” and the best video as selected by the band will win a family reunion at an upcoming Doobie Brothers concert.

Band member Pat Simmons collaborated with legendary producer Ted Templeman and a Doobie Brothers fan to write “Far From Home.”  Pat had encouraged Atlantic City fan PJ Heinz to write music for many years and Heinz always had a CD of his material every time Simmons came to town.  Two years ago, Simmons heard something special.

“This time he handed me a track with some guitar changes I really liked,” remembered Simmons.  “ I asked if he minded me taking these changes to see if I could come up with a song. He said,’ I’ve been hoping all these years you’d say that.’

“I fiddled with it a little and played it for Ted who thought it was really magical. So Ted and I started talking about our lives.  I told him my son was getting ready to go to college and he told me that it was great his kids were moving on, but bittersweet, too. That was how the song developed. A song about letting go of someone you love.”

The video for “Far From Home” was conceived and directed by Ringleader Production’s Max Gutierrez , who filmed the Doobie Brothers at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The footage will be intercut with fans’ home videos.

“We wanted to drive home the ‘connection’ in today’s connected culture” says Gutierrez.  “In collaboration with Cisco’s Telepresence, we wanted to demonstrate how people can be connected around the globe in a way that transcends the traditional concept of ‘Home’.  The song sums it up quite eloquently: Just remember that you’ll never be that far from home.”

4onthefloor Release Debut LP 4×4, Out On 4.4.2011

Self released

4 on the floor 4X4

Finally – from Minnesota a quartet of young lions who have released sixteen (well one is 35 seconds long) large slabs of blues that don’t beg for attention – they command your ear and your ear is happy.

The idea that 4onthefloor is a novelty (they employ four bass drums which keep the thunder booming throughout) is immediately discarded when they break into such powerful multi-layered cuts such as “Lionhearted.” [Read more…]

Chicago goes to Hell with the Devil

House of Blues – Chicago, IL

Stryper is:
Michael Sweet – lead vocals, rhythm and lead guitar
Oz Fox – lead guitar, backing vocals
Robert Sweet – Drums
Tim Gaines – Bass Guitar, backing vocals

IMG 0214-Edit copy

Stryper has been around for close to 28 years now and has dealt with breaking up, questions about their faith, along with being MTV darlings in the 80’s. Having listened to Stryper back in the 80’s, I jumped on the chance to check out this tour, thinking it would be  more of a novelty act than a true rock show.

The shows started early at 6:30pm with one opening local band. I noticed a lot of families in attendance. The ground level of House of Blues was crowded, the top levels were closed off, but a few people were in the boxes and second level.

As the crowd waited for the curtains to open, I wondered, “Could they pull this off?”
My question was soon answered with the opening song being “Sing-Along Song.” They hit it dead-on with the high lyrics of Michael Sweet and the blistering whammy-bar guitar work of Oz Fox. I felt myself transferred back to the 80’s. The crowd was singing word-for-word, and toward the end you could not help but get into it.

They then played “Murder by Pride,” which was well received, but the crowd was there to hear their classics. They teased the crowd with “The Rock That Makes Me Roll” before launching into an Ozzy classic, “Over the Mountain” from their new album, The Covering – a cover album tribute to  all the bands that have influenced them. Hearing Stryper do an Ozzy song was not something I would have expected, but they  nailed it.

At one point during the show, they started throwing Bibles into the crowd, which I heard they’ve done, but seeing it live was a trip to see; just glad I was not hit in the head with one of them. The set lasted a little over an hour, they played many of their hits, but the one thing I noticed they did not play was any of the slower ballads that made them MTV darlings and hated-on by diehard Metal heads. Not sure if this was their intention, but I liked how they stuck to just a straight rock mixe with a few cover songs like Black Sabbath’s hit “Heaven & Hell” and Kansas’s “Carry on Wayward Son.”

For the Encore, they played “To Hell with the Devil” and “Soldiers Under Command.”
As they closed out the show, Michael Sweet asked the crowd to bow their head, as he led a prayer for the victims of the tsunami in Japan.
