Zach Myers & Chris Allen SoulLow Acoustical Tour
Uli’s House of Rock – Lansing, MI
What do you do when you’re in the biggest rock band out there now – Shinedown – and you’re done touring, after three years, and you have a month off before going back in the studio doing preproduction on the new album? Well, if you’re Zach Myers, the guitarist for Shinedown, you tell your best friend, Chris Allen from Ingramhill, to hit the road for a month playing acoustic small venue shows.
As a fan of Shinedown for several years and seeing the different roles Zach has played within Shinedown, I was looking forward to hearing him sing as he did when he was with his band, Fairwell. Knowing that he was going to be in Lansing, MI, I decided to make the trip to check it out.
Arriving at Uli’s House of Rock, I foresaw an interesting night ahead as the bar had a ‘biker bar’ feel to it. The opening bands ranged from hardcore metal, blues-style rock, hard rock and a German owner who was as cool as cool can be.
After a quick turnaround from the last band, Zach & Chris came on stage and opened with a cover of Need To Breathe song, “The Outsiders.” After the first song, Zach let the crowd know there was no setlist and if there was anything anyone wanted to hear, to just shout it out; just not “Simple Man.”
Songs ranged from The Blacks Crowes, Oasis, to Tom Petty. Along with those, a few Shinedown songs like “Burning Bright” and “Breaking Inside” made the cut. Later in the show, Zach invited Jonathon Montoya, former guitarist from Saliva and Full Devil Jacket, to play the Full Devil Jacket song, “Where Did You Go?”
Throughout the night, Zach mentioned to everyone that he was welcoming them into his living room at home and it sure had that feel; the atmosphere made you feel like you were at a friend’s house as they jammed out. As both Chris & Zach took turns singing, as well as doing some songs together, there was a moment where Zach sat down at the keyboards and played “Every Rose Has Its Thorns” and jokingly laughed as Chris knew most of the words to it.
The highlight of the night was when Zach sang the much covered song, “Hallelujah,” showing his vocal range and true passion for music. The last song of the night, a cover of The Verve Pipe, “The Freshman,” with Zach having some guitar issue, he stopped playing and just sang the song with so much emotion, that in looking around at the crowd, left some with goosebumps.
After the show, Zach & Chris stayed to sign and talk with everyone until the last person left. In a time where the music industry is hurting, and bands talk about being fan-friendly, the guys in Shinedown certainly “walk it” and connect in a way very few bands can do. If you’re a fan of Shinedown or of good music in a very small setting, then you don’t want to miss this tour between two great musicians and friends, along with special guests at select venues.
