Deftones
Rave – Milwaukee, WI
4/29/2011
The Deftones are:
Stephen Carpenter – Guitar
Frank Delgado – Samples, Keys
Abe Cunningham – Drums
Sergio Vega – Bass
Chi Cheng – Bass
The Deftones formed back in 1989 and they’ve released 6 albums so far. They are currently on the road, performing to sold-out crowds, supporting their newest release off Warner Bros., Diamond Eyes.
Last night didn’t start off well. Funeral Party took the stage to open the night. They weren’t bad, but they weren’t all that entertaining, either. There were several of us that scratched our heads trying to distinguish where songs stopped and began. The crazy part is Funeral Party did a hell of a lot better than The Dillinger Escape Plan. Let’s say there was quite a few of us hanging out in the lobby of the Rave trying to figure out what the hell we were listening to. Picture a kitchen with a plethora of pots and pans hanging from the ceiling on hooks. Now picture them falling to the ground. That’s what The Dillinger Escape Plan sounds like. Really, try it at home! I can do screamo, I am a fan of Suicide Silence, but at least Suicide Silence knows how to write music. Last night was just a train wreck.
By the time The Deftones took the stage the sold-put crowd had piled into the Rave stage area. They must have sold more tickets even after being sold-out, because fans, including myself, had to stand outside in the lobby and peer through the doors to see the concert. Granted, the show was loud enough to do just that, but it was slightly disappointing.
Chino made everyone happy. How can he not? His vocals didn’t seem to let up as they played for roughly two hours. I honestly didn’t stay for the entire show because it really isn’t fun to be squished in the lobby trying to enjoy a show, and it was quite difficult to hear all of Chino’s vocals when he wasn’t hitting his trademark screams.
Note to Deftones fans: If you are headed to a sold-out show, make sure you get there plenty early and mark your spot!
