The Rave – Milwaukee, WI
Shaun Morgan – vocals, guitar
Dale Stewart – bass, vocals
John Humphrey – drums
The Rave was pack last night for Escape the Fate and Seether. It was kind of nice to have just two bands on the bill for the night instead of 3 or 4 that most bands are sticking to lately. There was a switch-a-roo with the start time. The Rave’s site and promotions said the show was going to start at 8pm, but as all of us learned the hard way, they changed it to an 8:50pm start. This left some restless fans in the crowd.
Seether is out on the town promoting their new album, Holding Onto Stings Better Left to Fray, which will be released this Tuesday May 17th off Wind-Up Records. Their newest single, “Country Song,” is tearing up the radio airwaves. The album has that same unique sound of Seether, as in, when you hear the first bar of “County Song” you know it’s a Seether song, but as Shaun points out, “On this album, I didn’t scream very much, because that’s not what I wanted to do. For some of the songs, the sentiment behind the lyric wasn’t angry, therefore to sing it in an angry way didn’t make any sense to me. The gritty stuff is easy to do, but it also feels really great to convey emotionally, through my voice, what I’m trying to say, instead of just being a one trick pony.” Shaun also channels his vocal influences from Cobain and Maynard and it’s not just on the album, as Shaun demonstrated last night.
There were many times during the set that Shaun just reminded some of us like Cobain. That comparison became very apparent when they busted out into Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” That and “Broken” won over the fans and had the crowd singing along. Now only if they had the bouncy ball sing-a-long going on the TVs behind them. The other highlight of the night was John Humphrey’s killer drum solo. No wonder why the band lists John as “drums, awesomeness” on their Facebook page.
Seether’s stage had a theatrical setup from the 50’s TV set to the red Christmas lights wrapped on the mic stands. Last night also had the best sound that I heard in a while. There was a point that I took my earplugs out and I could actually enjoy the sound of the show without massive distortion. Shaun’s vocals cut right through the bass and drums and made for a perfect rock and roll trifecta sound.
Seether is still on the road and will be most of the summer. They are hitting up Rocklahoma and Q101 Jamboree 2011.
