On Wednesday August 3, the Lolla-related festivities begin with Nelarusky: A Pre-Lollapalooza special event benefiting Special Olympics Chicago featuring Cold War Kids, Gold Motel, Carbon Tigers, Katz Company and Rachel McClusky. California’s Cold War Kids have been making music together since 2004. Their full length albums Robbers & Cowards and Loyalty To Loyalty led to non-stop touring around the world for several years on end, including a 2009 gig opening for Death Cab For Cutie. In between tours, they somehow found the time to record songs for their latest release, Mine Is Yours, which came out on Downtown Records in January. Come be among the first to see the new songs performed live in Chicago! Tickets are $26, and all proceeds will benefit the work of Special Olympics Chicago. The show is 18 & over and starts at 7pm.

The fun continues on Thursday August 4 with Death From Above 1979 and Metz. Toronto’s Death From Above 1979 took the dance-punk world by storm with the release of their album, You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine in 2004. Certified as a gold record in Canada, the album was released on Vice Recordings in the U.S. and brought the music of Jesse Keeler and Sebastian Grainger to American audiences. The band broke up in 2006, but after five years of silence, they recently announced their reunion and will play Lollapalooza as well as a handful of other shows this summer. Don’t miss the return of Death From Above 1979! Tickets are $26. The show is 18 & over and starts at 9pm.

On Friday August 5, The Family Vacation Tour, headlined by Atmosphere, comes to Metro. The first hip-hop act to put the Twin Cities on the map, Atmosphere has spent the better part of the last two years touring the globe in support of their critically acclaimed – and #5 Billboard Top 200 charting – album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. In between shows, the group returned home to Minneapolis in 2009 to record their 2010 double EP, To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy. Last year, Atmosphere took their love for their friends and family to the next level, writing and recording their long awaited LP, The Family Sign, a tribute to their true extended family: their fans, their loved ones, and each other. It was released in April, and the group has been touring the world since – catch their return to Chicago with the Family Vacation Tour. Evidence, Blueprint, DJ Babu and Prof will also perform. Tickets are $26. The show is 18 & over and starts at 11pm.

Saturday August 6, previous Lollapalooza veteran Mark Farina headlines a late night set in Smart Bar, with Ken ECB and Nate Manic. Shortly after Mark befriended Derrick Carter in 1988 at a record store in Chicago, his passion for House music, and sharing it with the world, exploded. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other stuff that wasn’t being played in the main rooms of nightclubs. While exploring his love for the purist forms of House Music, Mark developed his trademark style: Mushroom Jazz; acid jazz infused with the West Coast’s jazzy, organic productions along with urban beats. Mark has been traveling the globe performing hundreds of shows to over one million club goers every year.

Tickets are $15 before midnight, $20 after. Smart Bar is 21 & over and doors open at 10pm.

Tickets for these three shows will go on sale this Friday June 24 at 10am. Tickets are available at the Metro Box Office (no service fee) or online at /
