Ke$ha was back in Chicago at the Charter One Pavilion showing off her I am the Dance Commander dance moves on her Get $leazy Tour.

Ke$ha’s debut album Animal was release back in January of 2010 to mixed reviews, but was a hit with fans. It spawned her biggest hit “Tik Tok“.  It is odd to see a large pop act drop another album just 10 months after releasing her first major label debut, but her reason for doing doing so was for her touring set.  She told Spin magazine in an interview back in November of 2010, “Not to sound like a cheese dick, but my fans are my entire life at this point because I’m always on the road. I feel like they’ve become my family. With my first album, I only had enough material for an hour-long show, and I wanted enough for a two-hour dance party that’s gonna take over the planet. Plus, I wrote songs all throughout this crazy whirlwind experience of the past year. “

Last November her second studio album, Cannibal, was released and then the remixed album,  I Am the Dance Commander, dropped on March of this year. It’s a great way to milk fans for money by releasing remixed album. Apparently it’s the new thing to do. Ke$ha says she has hundreds of songs written so it’s just a matter of time before a new studio album hits the digital shelves.

Natasha Bedingfield’s “Strip Me”

Natasha Bedingfield
Strip Me
Released: 12/7/2010
Label: Phonogenic/Epic Records

natasha bedingfield strip meSome say the summer is nearly over, I say it’s not over until I see snow. For me this summer was filled with lots of pop and rock releases but the ones that is still replaying, Natasha Bedingfield’s Strip Me.  It’s the third studio album for the London pop singer. Her sophomore album Pocket Full of Sunshine had two major hits, “Love Like This” with Sean Kingston and “Pocket Full of Sunshine”, which has sold over 3 million copies to date.

Strip Me was released December of 2010 off Phonogenic/Epic Records and the first single “Strip Me” was used in the Rachel McAdams and Diane Keaton’s Morning Glory. This past spring Natasha embarked on a U.S. Tour and made TV appearance like Bravo’s Platinum Hit as a guest judge with Jewel.

The album is really an uplifting one and sends a message to not hold on to the material things in your life and each person has a voice that no one can take away.  It’s songs like “Weightless” and “Neon Lights” that make the album pop and send those messages.  This is no surprise as Natasha brought Grammy award winners to produce and work on the album such as John Shanks (Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow), Ryan Tedder (One Republic, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis), Wayne Wilkins (Beyonce, Jordin Sparks), John Hill (Shakira), Kleerup (Robyn, Cyndi Lauper), Danielle Brisebois (“Unwritten”).

Burning Man Radio!

Not all of us can make it to the famous hippy fest in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. The festival sells to 50,000 people every year. I assure you they would host more if they could as the tickets are a hot commodity after they event sells out. The festival is an arts and music fest that is like no other.  It’s the unconference of festivals.  No bands are officially booked to play, but there is no lack of music or art.  Project are encouraged and you must fill out a form to create and deliver your project to the grounds.

For those driving in their cars or for those of us who can’t make it this year, here is the Burning Man Radio site that is streaming music as well as weather and other important updates: http://www.bmir.org/ or in your car at 94.5fm.

The Radio Schedule for 8/26:

3 – 4:30pm DJ One Millionth
4:30 – 6pm – Decibel
6 – 8 pm  Blackass Ringleader & RJ
8- 10pm – Andrew from Opulent Temple lays down 2hrs of heavy beats
10 – 12am J Kanizzle

The live stream is quite hilarious. The DJs, who are really DJs that spin music in clubs, talk about their mixes as well as the weather and wind updates.  As I am writing this they are mentioning that they are trapped in the trailer they are broadcasting from and the DJ really needs to to use the bathroom. So for some kicks and giggles tune it!

Q&A with Mark Tremonti from Alter Bridge

Interview by Amy Harris at The First 3 Songs

Alter Bridge is a hard rock band formed by Creed members Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips alongside their lead singer Myles Kennedy. The band released their third studio album in 2010, aptly named ABIII. The album features their first number one hit “Isolation” and debuted in the top 20 the week after release. They are currently on tour with Theory of a Deadman, Black Stone Cherry, Adelita’s Way, and Emphatic on the Carnival Madness tour.

Amy spoke with guitarist Tremonti to preview the tour coming through the area in Louisville and Dayton. They talked about the band’s writing style and his future ventures including the future of his solo career and other headlining band Creed. Alter Bridge will be playing the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville Friday night and in Dayton, Ohio as part of X-Fest in Dayton on September 18 with the rest of the acts on the Carnival of Madness tour.

Amy: I’ve seen you play several times in Creed and with Alter Bridge most recently at Rock on the Range. I love you guys in both bands. I know you write a lot of music with Myles and for Creed as well. Do you have a different writing style when you are considering the different vocals between Myles and Scott?

Mark: No, when I am writing, I am writing whatever I am feeling at the moment. Then later on I will go through and categorize stuff after the fact and kind of organize ideas once I have gotten out of the moment.

Amy: Do you write it by yourself?

A Conversation with Stevie Nicks

Interview by Amy Harris at The First 3 Songs

Stevie NicksShe is currently on the road to promote her latest record with her solo act and will come through Cincinnati on Saturday night at the PNC Pavilion at Riverbend. It will be a fun night of music showcase with her new sounds and a nostalgic flair.

We caught up with Stevie via email this week to discuss her upcoming tour stop in Cincinnati and her inspirations for the new record and what a typical day looks like for an iconic rock star.

Amy: You recently released your first new album in ten years “In Your Dreams”. What was your biggest inspiration for the album?

Stevie:  I actually didn’t think I’d do another album for many years.  But I went to see the movie “Twilight New Moon” in Melbourne Australia when I was on tour in 2009. I loved it so much that I went back that night to see it again. It inspired me to go back to my room and write an essay based on the love story of Bella and Edward and Beauty and the Beast.  In the next city we were in, Brisbane, there was a piano in the suite. I sat down at the piano on our night off and wrote the song that became Moonlight- A Vampire’s Dream. I turned to my assistant when I was done and said, “I’m ready to make a record”.

Amy: You stated recently that having a boyfriend takes you away from being an artist. Do you get lonely and miss romance?

Chicago Music Couple Michael McDermott and Heather Horton are Inseparable

By Eric Schelkopf from Total Scene

Michael McDermottAnd as I learned, they like it that way. Horton has been a member of McDermott’s band since 2005, and they were married in 2009.

Horton and McDermott also both have birthdays this week, and will celebrate by performing at a birthday bash Friday, Aug. 26, at Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Morse Ave., Chicago.

The show starts at 8 p.m., and general admission tickets are $20, available at www.maynestage.com.

I had the chance to talk to Horton about a variety of topics, including how they balance being musicians while tending to the needs of their 1-year-old daughter, Rain.

Eric – The birthday bash is coming up, I see.You guys both have birthdays this week. And your daughter Rain just had a birthday, right?

Horton -She just did, yeah. She turned 1 on July 19. And then we took off for Europe.

Eric- Yes, I understand you were just in Italy. How was that?

Horton - It was amazing. It was extremely challenging, and we knew it would be. But it was just amazing.
I’m doing a documentary on Michael, which was less about the music and more about an American traveling through the center of Italy.

We’ve been there several times, but each time we go there, it solidifies our belief in what our roots can really do for us.

We’ve gone there and seen a 1,000-year-old castle. It’s just a whole different way of life over there, and it really makes you put things in perspective when you come back here.

Paul McCartney Announces Ocean’s Kingdom

paul mccartney ocean's kingdomMarking his first foray into the world of dance, Paul McCartney has announced the general release of Ocean’s Kingdom, commissioned by the New York City Ballet. The recording will be released by Hear Music/Telarc and is conducted by John Wilson, produced by John Fraser and performed by The London Classical Orchestra.

Ocean’s Kingdom is the first time Paul has written an original orchestral score or any kind of music for dance and is the result of a collaboration between Paul and New York City Ballet’s Master in Chief Peter Martins, who have worked together to present the world premiere of a new ballet for the company’s 2011/2012 season this September.

Though the work is Paul’s first ballet, he approached the project in the same way he writes all other music, driven by his heart rather than his head and inspired by feeling rather than specific technical knowledge. While this may have been another new turn for his staggeringly varied career to take, Paul knew it had to be influenced by his own personal experience and that he needed to create a story the audience would find equally compelling and moving.

Paul’s first step was to visit the Royal Opera House to see Adolphe Adam’s Giselle, danced by the Royal Ballet. Afterwards, Paul met the dancers and discussed the work with them, realising as he did so that he was still without a central theme to his work. Keen to tell a story through his music, Paul decided to focus on the purity of the ocean and within just two months, the first draft had been completed. He then went through the music again thinking specifically of the ballet itself, thereby creating a world featuring distinctive characters and a vibrant underworld kingdom.  Finally Paul spent many more weeks working alongside Peter Martins to refine the work, before Peter created the choreography with the NYCB dancers.

An hour long score featuring four stunning movements – “Ocean’s Kingdom,” “Hall of Dance,” “Imprisonment” and “Moonrise” – the ballet tells of a love story within the story of an underwater world whose people are threatened by the humans of Earth. A potently expressive and richly varied work, the score is Paul’s most challenging and emotionally complex yet. As he explains: “What was interesting was writing music that meant something expressively rather than just writing a song.  Trying to write something that expressed an emotion – so you have fear, love, anger, sadness to play with and I found that exciting and challenging.”

The premiere of the ballet Ocean’s Kingdom will take place at NYCB’s Fall Gala on Thursday 22nd September 2011 while the release of the orchestral score will follow on October 4th, available digitally, on CD and on vinyl.  It was recorded in June in London.

The artwork that accompanies the release is equally striking and inventive. Though it seems to suggest a city skyline, it is actually a digital readout of the notes from the ballet score.

Although this is his first orchestral score for dance, Paul is already quite at home in the world of classical music.  His back catalogue already carries four classical albums, the most recent of which was the Classical BRIT Award winning ‘Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart)’; a work for chorus and orchestra in four movements that was released in 2006.

TRACK LISTING

1. Movement 1 Ocean’s Kingdom (14:07)  2. Movement 2 Hall of Dance (16:19)  3. Movement 3 Imprisonment (13:36)  4. Movement 4 Moonrise (12:29)

BLUE OCTOBER LANDS HIGHEST CHART DEBUT OF THEIR CAREER

Self-Released Via Justin Furstenfeld’s OWN Label, UP/DOWN Records, Any Man In America Lands at #8 On The Top 200

Band Resuming Their Headline Tour On September 8th

Blue October

(New York, NY – August 24, 2011) – Multiplatinum art rock band, Blue October, have landed their highest chart debut of their 16 year career with the release of theirlatest album, Any Man In America.  The album, which was self-released on Justin Furstenfeld’s own UP/DOWN Records after parting ways with Universal Motown, debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top 200, was the #2 debut in the chart this week and also #2 on the Independent Album Chart selling over 26,000 copies.  The album also enjoyedsuccess digitally hitting the #1 spot on the iTunes Alternative album chartand  #5 on the iTunes Overall Album Chart.  The record also enjoyed 5 consecutive days at #1 on the Amazon.com Top 100 Paid MP3 Album Chart. The album was produced by Furstenfeld, who also produced the band’s platinum album, Foiled, together with Tim Palmer who has produced and mixed for the likes of Robert Plant, Pearl Jam and U2.  Any Man In America is the follow up to 2009’s Approaching Normal and is the 6th studio album for Blue October. The album takes the listener on a cathartic journey chronicling the deeply personal events that have unfolded in singer Justin Furstenfeld’s life since the band’s last release. USA Today states in its 3 out of 4 star review “this one’s a doozy…It’ll tear your heart out.” Justin has also become very proactive in fighting for shared parenting rights and teamed up with the American Coalition For Fathers and Children recently.

Frontman and UP/DOWN Records President Furstenfeld had this to say about the band’s achievement: “I am in awe and beside myself with a big sigh and the most amazing crows flying in my stomach. The fact that when I started UP/DOWN Records, it was to prove that the listener can still be touched by artists with something to say, artists who are not afraid to stand up and remind listeners that they can still feel music like a first kiss. Making music that is real is what both Blue October and UP/DOWN records is all about.  I can’t thank everyone enough who has supported us and helped us achieve this milestone for the band.”

The debut single, “The Chills,” is currently making its way up the charts landing in the Top 40 at Alternative radio this week.  The band also just released the video for the song and you can check it out here. The video was directed by Jeff Ray based on an idea that Justin came up with himself. Blue October has also released the touching video for “The Feel Again (Stay)”.  Directed by Merritt Fields, “The Feel Again (Stay)” is one of Blue October’s most truthful and haunting videos to date and gives fans a deeper taste of what they can expect from the new album.   That video has already reached over a 200,000 views in its short time since being released and can be seen here.

Blue October will also resume their Any Man In America tour on September 8th in Phoenix and will run through mid-October.  The tour will make stops in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Las Vegas among others.  Known for their impressive live shows, the band received critical acclaim with the early shows that kicked off the tour in Texas.  The Dallas Morning News raved “Wednesday’s performance showed a band that has not only arrived, but has set up a smooth-running and rewarding shop.“ Justin and Blue October will be bringing representatives from the American Coalition of Fathers and Children on the road with them to educate fans about Family Breakdown, Divorce and Emotional Child Support.

Blue October first exploded into the mainstream after years of relentless touring with their hit single “Hate Me” which spent 16 weeks in Top 5 at Modern Rock. From their 2006 release Foiled, the song rocketed to the top of the modern rock charts and garnered the band a whole new fan base. The album went on to sell 1.6 million copies based on the strength of the single and the band’s constant touring.  Blue October continued their success at Modern Rock radio with the Top 10 hit “Dirt Room” from Approaching Normal.

Blue October is Justin Furstenfeld, Jeremy Furstenfeld, Ryan Delahoussaye, Matt Noveskey, and Julian Mandrake.

Lyle Lovett at Ravinia

Lyle Lovett
Ravinia – Highland Park, IL
8/21/2011

In what has become a yearly tradition, Lyle Lovett made his 16th appearance at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park on Sunday August 21st. I have had the pleasure to attend this a few times now but have previously always been in the lawn area. The lawn at Ravinia is typically a wonderful place to see a show, you bring a picnic, chairs, beverages of your choosing and you sit out under the stars to hear some great music. This year we were seated in the pavilion area and the difference in the experience is just staggering. In the smaller, more intimate setting you can really experience all that is part of a Lyle Lovett show, much more than just the music streaming through the speakers.

It may sound a cliché but a Lyle Lovett show really is an experience like no other. From the 14 piece Large Band who backs him, the impeccable production and sound, outstanding musicianship from all involved, and in the right setting, an audience who sits mesmerized by every word and every note. With hundreds of concerts in my past, a Lyle Lovett show is always much anticipated and fondly remembered.

Volumes have been written about Lyle Lovett and his genre hopping abilities and in a live setting that comfort with multiple styles is evident. A jazzy instrumental opening moves in to the classic standard “Stand By Your Man” followed by a downright dirty guitar duel to open “It’s Rock & Roll”, a song he penned with friend Robert Earl Keen. The evening continues with musicians and backup singers assembled in various configurations – a sparse group for the haunting “She’s Already Made Up Her Mind” and “North Dakota”, mandolin and fiddle for a bluegrass break, and the whole Large Band at other times.

One has to discuss the Large Band when talking about a show like this. There is a tremendous amount of talent up there on that stage including drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Leland Sklar who between the two of them i think have played on just about everything. Singer Francine Reed is always a show stopper with her “Wild Women (Don’t Get The Blues)” and the rest of the crew does an outstanding job as well. Each is given many opportunities to be featured and it really is a band effort – Lyle obviously enjoys playing with these folks and it’s obvious that there is a tremendous amount of respect among all the musicians for each other. The arrangements are impeccable even with the whole band on stage and while it’s obvious that the songs are well rehearsed, there are also flourishes of improvisation as well.

Mixed in between the songs Lyle was also a wonderful host for the evening. Stories about the songs were interspersed and his humor shines through. Banter with the audience and the band was a big part of the show. A song dedication to a mother whose son had just left for Afghanistan was poignant and one of the more moving moments of the evening.

While there is always a little bit of variation, Lyle’s setlist doesn’t seem to change too much from year to year. That’s ok with me though, It’s sort of like watching a great movie you’ve seen before but you just can’t help but watch again if you have the chance. With each listen I just learn to appreciate them more. There is also a comfort in hearing these songs, they are old friends and once a year you get to spend a few minutes with them and be reminded why you love them so much.

As the show ended and the lights came up, the crowd buzzes as they discuss the highlights. My wife and I share our thoughts and we hear others do the same. As we walk back to the car, our faces hurt from smiling, our souls renewed from the music, we remember why we make the long journey to see this show – and vow to do it again next year.

The Music Continues Through the Fall and Spring of 2011-2012 at Ravinia Festival with Annual Rising Stars Concerts

THE MUSIC CONTINUES THROUGH THE FALL AND SPRING OF 2011-2012 AT RAVINIA FESTIVAL WITH ANNUAL RISING STARS CONCERTS

Rising Stars artists also participate in festival’s REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs

Special ticket and dining packages available for all concerts

Not just a summer music festival, Ravinia continues the music during its annual Rising Stars series, this year featuring six concerts in the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012, bringing the brightest stars of the next generation of professional classical musicians to Ravinia. All concerts take place in the festival’s most intimate performance space, the indoor 450-seat Bennett Gordon Hall, which continues to showcase successful recitals and chamber music concerts during the summer. This season’s series features pianist Giles Vonsattel (Oct. 1, 2011); violinist Bella Hristova (Oct. 15, 2011); the Linden String Quartet (Nov. 5, 2011); pianist Daria Rabotkina (Nov. 19, 2011); Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (April 7, 2012); and vocal ensemble Calmus (April 28, 2012).

Ravinia is dedicated to developing the full potential of emerging artists, beginning with their performances on the Rising Stars series and, ultimately for some, their Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut on the pavilion stage during the festival’s summer season. Designed to provide gifted young musicians with the opportunity to refine their performing skills, the Rising Stars series encourages audiences to experience and support a lineup of the best and brightest candidates for future stardom while presenting artists with the chance to

perform before discerning audiences in an intimate setting. Rising Stars concerts have introduced Ravinia audiences to such current stars as violinists Pamela Frank, Gil Shaham and Maxim Vengerov; pianists Lang Lang, Jonathan Biss and Joyce Yang; cellists Zuill Bailey and Claudio Bohórquez; and clarinetist Anthony McGill.

In addition to their Rising Stars performances, the artists will also perform in free concerts for students involved in Ravinia’s REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs throughout the Chicago area. These performing opportunities give students a chance to make an intimate connection not only to the young artist, but also to classical music. Ravinia’s education programs make music accessible to thousands of children K-12 in Chicago and the north suburbs, teaming working musicians with teachers to put music back into the public schools.

The Joseph M. Fabbioli Rising Stars Concert features 2008 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner pianist Giles Vonsattel, who began touring after winning the top prize of the prestigious 2002 Naumburg International Piano Competition. He made his Alice Tully Hall debut that same year and has since performed at Zürich’s Tonhalle, Warsaw’s Chopin Festival and Tokyo’s Opera City Hall.  He has performed in the U.S. with the Utah, Santa Fe, Nashville and Grand Rapids symphonies as well as with the Boston Pops Orchestra. During a 2006-09 three-year appointment, Vonsattel was a member of Lincoln Center’s prestigious Chamber Music Society Two, with whom he performed extensively both in New York and on tour.

Violinist Bella Hristova is first-prize winner of the 2008-09 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and made her debut in the Young Concert Artists Series during the 2009-10 season at Carnegie Hall’s Merkin Concert Hall and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  At the auditions she was also awarded the Helen Armstrong Violin Fellowship, the Miriam Brody Aronson Award, the Ruth Laredo Memorial Award, the Candlelight Concert Society Concert Prize and the Lied Center of Kansas Concert Prize. Hristova has performed at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Cartagena Festival Internacional de Musica and in recital at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston as well as appearing as a guest artist with the New York String Orchestra conducted by Jaime Laredo. She has also been featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion on NPR.

Currently the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the Yale School of Music, the Linden String Quartet is the gold medalist and grand prize-winner of the 2009 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, winner of the 2010 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, and comprises laureates of the 9th Borciani International String Quartet Competition.  Other awards include first prize at the Sixth Hugo Kauder International Competition and the Coleman-Barstow prize at the 2009 Coleman National Chamber Ensemble Competition.

Winner of the 2007 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, pianist Daria Rabotkina has performed in solo appearances with the San Francisco and New World symphonies under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, and with the Kirov Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev in a four-concert North American tour. Rabotkina has given recitals at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Concert Hall, the Moscow Conservatory, and in Denmark, Switzerland and Japan.  In addition to her 2007 victory at the CAG Competition, she has garnered prizes at the Virtuosi per Musica di Pianoforte in the Czech Republic, Tbilisi Competition in Georgia, Jacob Flier Piano Competition in New Paltz, Sendai Competition in Japan, World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Jacksonville Competition in Florida and the Montreal International Musical Competition.

Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute is a chamber ensemble whose members are selected each year from the most promising musicians to attend the institute’s summer session at Ravinia. The tour, designed to bring the musical richness of Ravinia to a wider audience, presents formal concerts as well as educational programs for schools and community organizations. Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute has appeared at such prestigious venues as Boston’s Gardner Museum, the Library of Congress, Miami’s Friends of Chamber Music series and New York’s Town Hall, in addition to performances each year on Ravinia Festival’s Rising Stars series.  This year’s touring group includes violinists Tessa Lark and Steans Institute piano and strings program director Miriam Fried, violist Ayane Kozasa, cellists Deborah Pae and Nathan Vickery and pianist Adam Golka.

Founded in 1999 in Germany, the a cappella quintet Calmus comprises graduates of Leipzig’s renowned St. Thomas Church Choir School and offers the unique combination of soprano voice with four male voices ranging from bass to countertenor. With no fewer than 10 recordings to its credit, Calmus received the 2009 Echo Klassik Award for Lied:gut!, a disc of treasured German folksongs. The group‘s latest CD, Hausmusik, is a collection of songs by Robert and Clara Schumann and J.S. Bach. Calmus’s festival appearances include International A Cappella Week in Hannover and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, where the group attended a master class with The King’s Singers. In addition to first prize and numerous performance prizes at the CAG Competiton, other awards include first prizes at the fourth annual Robert Schumann Choral Competition, the International Competition for Vocal Ensembles in Finland and the 37th Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain.

Ravinia Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of The Albert Pick, Jr. Fund and The Bruning Foundation for their generous participation as sponsors of this series.

Tickets for Rising Stars concerts go on sale in September and are $20, with a 20 percent discount on orders for tickets to four or more concerts. All concerts are at 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Ravinia will also offer concert/dining packages for each show at a special price of $50. Dinners will take place prior to the concert at 6 p.m. in the Freehling Room.

Ravinia Festival’s Bennett Gordon Hall is located in the John D. Harza building on the Ravinia Festival grounds, 201 St. Johns Ave in Highland Park, IL. Little Big Town’s Latest Scattered, Smothered & Covered Features “I Want You Back” By The Jackson 5

LITTLE BIG TOWN’S LATEST SCATTERED, SMOTHERED & COVERED
VIDEO SERIES FEATURES “I WANT YOU BACK”
BY THE JACKSON 5

NASHVILLE- Platinum-selling country group Little Big Town is back with their online video series sensation, “Scattered, Smothered & Covered” and this time throws back to the 70’s with a playful spin on “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5.

The foursome is known for switching out lead vocals and this time features Kimberly Schlapman in the spotlight.

“I’ve always been a huge Michael Jackson fan,” said Schlapman. “But when we started listening to ‘I Want You Back’ as a cover song, I realized what a musical genius he was, even as a child.”

Shot in the beautiful Carson Center in Paducah, KY on July 15th, the video highlights the bands creativity in not only picking songs, but also using anything they can find to make their cover sound unique.  Instruments used for this video are upright base, drums, mandolin, tambourine and a baby rattle courtesy of Karen and Jimi’s baby boy, Elijah.

MATISYAHU Releases “Elijah’s Song”

Matisyahu elijah song

Matisyahu has released “Elijah’s Song” in memory of a young boy he met who was suffering from cancer. During the time that Matisyahu knew him, he and Elijah became great friends; Matisyahu would keep in constant contact with the young man, even surprising him by performing at his bar mitzvah. Elijah had asked that he and Matisyahu record a song together, and in Elijah’s final hours, the song was completed and is now available to download.

Says Matisyahu, “I wrote and recorded this song with my friend Elijah just hours before he passed away last December. Proud to be able to share his voice and story while helping his family on their road to recovery. If you like it, you can make a donation and get two versions of the song–including one with him singing.”

The track can be downloaded HERE with a minimum donation of $1 and all of the proceeds go to the Elijah Memorial Fund, administered by the Chabad of West Boca. The download includes two versions of “Elijah’s Song”, including a special version with Elijah and Matisyahu singing together the night before Elijah passed.

When being stopped by the police you will be asked if you have anything on you. If you give it up freely you will be let go with a $150 fine. If you don’t give it up the dogs will be brought out and you will be detained for the whole weekend until you see a judge on Monday. There were also searches on the way out to make sure you didn’t buy anything to take home with you. My advice, don’t take any souvenirs home with ya. Not that I am condoning drug use, but if you buy it at the fest – do it there! Don’t try to take it home with ya.

People constantly saying Whoop Whoop……and expecting you to say it back.

The Gathering 2011 Graffiti Shed

Bulletholes & Gunshots. During the night you can hear random shots being fired. I would guess it’s cause there aint much to do in bufu.

The Gathering 2011 Bullet Hole Stop Sign

The Gathering 2011 Bullet Hole Turn Sign

If you are a girl be prepared for every guy to ask you to show your tits. Apparently country boys do not have cable.

Juggalos. I thought Lollapalooza was supposed to bring all the weirdo’s out, but Lolla got nothing on The Gathering. I love it!

The Gathering 2011 Juggalos 4

Naked girls. Mind you most of them are not great to look at. But they are everywhere. Walking around. Chillin’ by the showers. Riding the carnival rides. Watching acts at the main stage. If you are one of these girls you will be hit on. You will be asked to take photos with people. And you will hear pickup lines like “I like to eat pussy”. Maybe this is the reason why these guys ask every girl to show their tatas.

This is a BYOB fest so people sell beer out of their coolers constantly. You can find some pretty decent deals walking around. Just keep in mind people make runs from where they are sitting back to their cars to refill their coolers so they aren’t always cold. Drink up!

Graffiti everywhere!

 The Gathering 2011 Graffiti

You can get just about anything for a buck. We found lots of shots for a $1. There was a jello shot stand, then there are the not so classy shots out of a bottle of Jameson, Jäger, or whatever else people have. Fuck there was even a girl selling squirts of her breast-milk for a $1. Disgusting!

I also saw a girl with a sign that read “You buy coke from me and you can snort it off my tits”

There are so many drugs out in the open. Saw lots of bongs, pipes, coke, you name it it’s here! While chillin’ at the picnic tables I heard a guy ask to bum a cigarette. When told no he’s like “I’ll trade you some yay”. Needless to say a deal was made and tho I think the guy who gave up his cigarette “won” in that deal it was a little crazy to see. People openly offer you drugs constantly. Like they were bags of peanuts at a baseball game.

The Gathering 2011 Whipit

Lastly I would like to wrap this up with a few stories I heard to really get across how different this fest is.

In the Freak Show Tent: I heard last year Ron Jeremy was fisting people. Classy.

One year a Girl had sex with a microphone for free shit, also in the Freak Show Tent. Then came back the next year to top her previous performance by squirting all over people after her basterbation session. Trashy.

Ok this one happened this year! I heard this from a fellow Press peep. While over by their camping area along the fence line they noticed people sneaking in by crawling under the fence. Fellow Juggalos were getting pissed telling the Press to take photos of them to turn these guys in. Ummmm we’re Press guys….not Police! So anyway. The girl I was talking to said there were guys hanging out down by the fence for like 2 hours. When they came back to camp she asked them what they had been up to. They said “setting boobie traps” come to find out they drooped duce all along the fence. Boobie trap? More like poopie trap!

The Gathering 2011 Juggalos

I just have to say I love that she is wearing chucks with this outfit!

The Gathering 2011 Juggalos 3

Yeah there are 2 people passed out here.

The Gathering 2011 Juggalos 5

What is The Gathering of the Juggalos?

The Gathering 2011 Hog Rock

To many it’s ICP’s annual music festival…..I like to call it mini Amsterdam. Tho I’m sure Amsterdam is much nicer than Hog Rock. This festival holds no bar. It’s durty, grungy, a bit trashy and full of drugs. You can find just about any substance to enhance your Gathering experience on “Dealer’s Bridge”.

The Gathering 2011 Dealers Bridge at Night

The Gathering 2011 Dealers Bridge by Day

The fest itself is pretty small. The grounds map looks GIANT with all the camp sites but you can walk it in a matter of minutes. There is the main stage, second stage and of course wrestling stage and the freak show stage. All within minutes of each other.

The Gathering 2011 Freak Show Tent

Now being a festival person, I have never been to a festival quite like this. Full of dibochary around every corner. I mean I get drug usage at a concert. Weed is smoked just about anywhere these days. Even at Lolla you will see people light up a joint while waiting for the next band or smoking a joint while chillin’ in the grass listening to some hippie music. But I have never seen anyone just bust out lines like it ain’t no big thang. And you never hear anyone asking me to show them my tits or flash a joint and a bag of a powdery substance asking if I need anything. Sure debauchery!

What to do:

You can keep busy with 9am wake and bake parties to afternoon sideshows before the main stage opens at 6pm lasting til midnight. If you are still roaring to go you can hit up some wrestling matches and a comedy show. If you are still up after all that there is always the ‘I’ve never been so high after party”.

Emily Armstrong is “Not A Hater” Exclusive Interview.

Dead Sara Cover

It’s Tuesday afternoon in sunny Los Angeles. I just hung up the phone with Emily Armstrong, the uber talented, equally cool and polite lead singer of the band Dead Sara. Who was kind enough to speak to me while having a busy day off from making music.

You guys play the Sunset Strip Music Festival this Friday, Are you excited?

[EA] We’re playing the party… technically. The warm up..

Well better to play the party in the beginning then at the end when everyone’s so fucked up they won’t remember, right?

[EA] Sure! I mean.. yeah we didn’t expect to play at all until they invited us and it’s already sold out.

Will you catch any of the other shows?

[EA] maybe.. we’ll see bush, since we’re going on tour with them.

How long are you going out on tour with Bush?

10 days. (Dates Here)

Was Bush big for you growing up?

[EA] Oh yeah. The 90s. They were everywhere.

Yeah they were. I feel like we’re similar age, how old are you?

[EA] 25.

..I reveal my old age to Emily, and no I won’t tell you.. we share a laugh of love for 90′s music..

So how much touring has Dead Sara done?

[EA] Not that much touring.. We did SXSW a couple times.. in 2007 we went up the coast. We’ve just been playing LA for years now but with the new lineup, new band, and new album coming out it all makes sense. We are looking forward to it.

Are you prepared? Ready for next step.. or are you shitting your pants?

[EA] We’ve been preparing for it. It’s something we’ve looked forward to. most of all we’re fucking scared.

Can I write that?

[EA] Yeah. (laughs) We are totally excited.

What is the goal for you and the band for the next level?

[EA] The debut record is the next level, then tour with a bigger band… I mean this is already a bigger level for us. We look forward to things like this happening again next year, and our next record.

Are there any songs on the album that you wrote instantly?

[EA] Weatherman – It was the first song we wrote together. We wrote it instantly. It was magic. (Bands first single available here.)

Which song was the biggest bitch to write, lyrically?

[EA] “Lemon scent” we wrote in the studio, and we thought it was rad, lets keep this for record, but we didnt have much lyrically. When it was my time to do vocals, I was like “what?!” The pressure builds and it’s harder than it usually is (writing on the spot in the studio in the heat of the moment) But I enjoy the process very much. In that situation it was just a bit different.

Lemon Scent is actually my favorite track on the album. When can the fans expect the album in their paws?

[EA] October 11th.

Officially?

[EA] Officially.

So do all of your families and parents support you and your musical decisions?

[EA] Yes and no. You can’t expect parents to support an 11 year old little girl saying “I’m gonna do this” It’s like “Really, oh c’mon.” Eventually it was like “Emily you stuck with it.. you show no signs of letting go fucking do it..” Me being dedicated showed everyone.

Do you feel being successful now you can be like “Look, WHAT! I told you so?”

[EA] yeah (laughs) I’m no hater. I couldn’t be cocky and do that. That’s not me..

Any advice for kids or musicians trying to make it in today’s music scene?

[EA] Staying true to yourself. In the industry people have a vision FOR you, you have to go in with YOUR vision and from that you will have no problem personally.

(That was profound.)

When you felt crushed by the industry and people telling you who you should be or how to do things – did you ever create a back up career?

[EA] Anybody would do that, create a plan a or plan b but I just knew it had to work. It just had to..

We talk about the current state of affairs in the music industry..

You have a strong fan base, and I think streaming the album online helped that. People have mixed views today about giving music away for free to promote the better of the band – or busting your ass in the studio, paying for the studio, then you make .99 cents a track…How do you feel about all that?

[EA] I can go both ways on it. You put out your blood sweat and tears and it = debt. But at the end of the day fans and people are coming to shows and tours are happening more importantly..

Some bands say that they tour, do the albums, and get home and break even..

[EA] Absolutely..

…We debate if breaking even is shitty, or cool. In the end we agree that as long as people know Dead Sara’s music even if they “download and snatch it” the word is spreading about the life-full new band and none of that is bad.

We go on to talk about Los Angeles, where we both are currently living..

I just moved here (LA) from NYC about 9 months ago..I feel like in NYC people steal your ideas, so you can’t share too much. In LA people want to help you make you make it, but only to make a percentage off of you.. Do you have any experience with the East Coast side of business?

[EA] A few years ago we went out there for a label meeting, but that’s all. I feel like when a band comes up people say “this is good for LA.”

..You may have to live here to understand this but.. Los Angelenos, Miss Armstrong just spoke the truth. We talked for a while about when a band plays LA. Emily mentions that there is so much going on here besides music, and I can’t agree more. Moving here from the east coast I am mesmerized by nature alone. Things you call hills, I call mountains. I make childish sequels when a dolphin swims by, you’d think I just saw a unicorn, every other day I think I’ve found a pot of gold when a street is shut down for an ethnic festival and beach BBQs are part of our weekly itinerary. It is a lot of competition if you’re playing a friday night show..

[EA] When a show happens, People say, This is good for LA, This might make people get out..

Your band is so unique and energetic, “Lemon Scent” and “Timed Blues” are unlike anything I’ve heard in music and you can hear all of the various musical influences laced all throughout them..I would think that it would get people off their ass, and off the beach to a show?

[EA] You would think…

What are you listening to these days?

[EA] I’ve been singling out songs – I do the iPhone download. Joy formidable. Cheap trick. Eric Clapton. etc.

What aggravates you the most about music today?

[EA] The complete formula of how to make a star thing. Lets get this girl, lets go over some songs, dress this way. OK we get it! I want to see bands and singers who have paid their dues and written and felt songs for themselves – the formulated pop stars or formulated rock bands. (they aggravate me.)

Who is your dream band to tour with?
[EA] We as a band keep saying the foo fighters. Personally, Stevie Nicks. cockatoo twins, Elizabeth (Fraser), to write with her, I mean fuck.

What is your dream place or festival to play?
[EA] Coachella, that would be a magical place for us to play. As far as stadiums Madison Square Garden, Wembley, I’m thinking outside the box here

“Nah man, you’re in the box, It’s gonna happen..

I wasn’t just being nice, because I’m not a nice person, I’m just honest – I believe in this band and it’s always icing on the cake when the musicians are as nice as they sound. Thanks Emily!! Rock On. ….(& If you’re out of the loop, catch up on Dead Sara Here!) If you’re in the loop, and in LA, see them at the Sunset Strip Music Festival playing with BuckCherry at the Roxy this Friday! See u There!

Bumpus founder bringing the soul with new band, Dance Floor Plans

By Eric Schelkopf at The Total SceneJames Johnston is a soul man. After forming beloved Chicago funk jazz band Bumpus in the late ’90s, Johnston has a new band, Dance Floor Plans, that is all about the soul with a healthy dose of funk.

Dance Floor Plans, www.dancefloorplans.com, will perform its first show opening for Nikka Costa on Aug. 21 at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago. The new band features members of Bumpus, Terrible Spaceship, Clip Art and Mars to Maridia.

DJRC is also on the bill. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $17, $20 at the door, available at www.lincolnhallchicago.com.

I had the chance to talk to Johnston about his latest project.

Eric: Dance Floor Plans will play its first live show opening for Nikka Costa. Do you think that’s a good gig to introduce the band?

James: I actually can’t think of a better first real gig than opening for Nikka Costa. She’s got the funk and soul, but her music is not completely retro. She brings something modern and we’re trying to do the same thing.

COLD Interview with Scooter Ward

COLD interview by Amy Harris at The First 3 Songs

Cold can still bring an alternative grunge style to the stage that they rocked when they hit the scene in 1996. They became a mainstay in the musical culture with their 2003 top five release Year of the Spider. After an announced break-up of the band in 2006, they returned to the stage with a reunion tour in 2009. Right now, they are promoting their recently released fifth studio album Superfiction.

Amy was able to speak with the band’s lead singer and original member Scooter Ward. The two discussed the road back after the time off and a visual imagery associated with their new music. T

Amy: I’ve been listening to the new album and I love it. I’ve been listening to it over and over this week.

Scooter: Thank you very much. I appreciate that.

Amy: I personally think it is your best work.

Scooter: I think so too. We’re on the same page. We are very proud of it. It took us a long time but it definitely came out well I think.

Volbeat Interview with Michael Poulsen

Volbeat Interview by Amy Harris at The First 3 Songs

Volbeat is Michael Poulsen (Vocals / Guitar), Anders Kjølholm (Bass), Jon Larsen (Drums) and Thomas Bredahl (Guitar).  They may not be a household name around the venues in the United States, but they are an intense heavy metal Danish band that has played in front of some of the largest crowds in the world overseas.  Their song Fallen is also taking over Octane Sirius radio and rock radio stations across the country. They are about to kick off their U.S. leg of their Grand Summer Tour. It will promote their album Beyond Hell and Above Heaven that was released late in 2010.

Amy caught up with lead vocalist Michael Poulson to discuss their growing popularity in America, being naked with Metallica, and the great successes of the band in Europe.  This is a great opportunity to catch an act that half the world already has fallen in love with.

Amy: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today. I know it’s evening for you.

Michael: Yeah. Right now the sun is shining. Me and my wife are sitting out in the garden. It’s really good weather. The kids are playing around. Everything is just really peaceful.

Amy: The tour does kick off next week in the U.S. What can fans expect from you guys and the show?

Michael: We really love what we are doing. We are definitely a live band. We are very serious about our records. We would never go into the studio if we weren’t capable of doing exactly the same thing on the records that we do live. The image is just so much higher live because there are certain things you can’t get on the record. So there will definitely be lots of energy and good spirit and good connection to the audience. This is definitely a tour we are looking forward to.
