Julia Easterlin is a product of the Berklee College of Music in Boston -she just graduated last month. She attended the Lollapalooza press conference on Friday as part of the new partnership between Lollapalooza and Berklee. The school will be giving out a full tution scholarship each year to a lucky musician who wants to attend the school. That winner will then grace an opening slot on the Lollapalooza bill. Julia Easterlin landed one of the coveted spots on the Lolla bill because of the new partnership between the prestigious school and the hottest music festival. Berklee supplied internship opportunities this year for their students at the Kidzapalooza stage and also supplied an act to the line-up. Julia was picked for the slot based on her performance at the college’s student run label Heavy Rotation Record‘s annual showcase. Her Lollapalooza performance also isn’t Julia’s first time at a large festival. She’s recently played Berklee’s SXSW events in Austin, Berklee’s CMJ Music Marathon showcase in New York, and performances in Cuba, with the Berklee Interarts Ensemble.
Julia took to the Google+ Stage at 12noon on Saturday. The crowd was fairly large for it being noon and everyone still recovering from Friday’s festivities. She keeps it simple onstage with a bass player and drummer and her handy loop machine that allows her to record her voice during performance and play it back as a loop. This enables her to add many vocal layers on a song. This isn’t new to the music scene as I’ve seen it most recently at the Yellow Ostrich performance while they were at Schubas. Yet Julia’s arrangement of her vocals makes for some great pop music. I could hear one person in the crowd say, “This isn’t so bad!” It was actually refreshing.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for Julia Easterlin as she’s only just begun.
