Music Video: Awaken the Empire “The Awakening”

Alt-Electronica group Awaken the Empire have just revealed their much anticipated video for the song “The Awakening.” Fans can watch the video now, here: http://youtu.be/VdCZBno7ZbQ.  The video was directed by Chad Michael Ward: Combi-Christ, Aiden.

In early 2011, the band self funded/produced their debut release The Awakening EP via iTunes, accompanied by the self-produced video for the single “Know Your Place.” Shortly after, the band signed with indie label Burn The Records! The band is currently in the studio recording with producer Erik Ron (Panic at the Disco, Versa Emerge, Get Scared).

Awaken the Empire consists of Damien Lawson (Vocals, Guitar, Programming), Jaymz Marcc (Bass), Daryl Falconer (Drums), and Shivan (Guitar). Their sound is best described as a post-apocalyptic soundtrack to the future…but Awaken the Empire is much more than a band, it is a movement for the people. A call to action to wake up..to break free of society’s expectations, and to not be afraid of risking it all for the chance to control ones own destiny.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Anchor Summer Beer by Anchor Brewing Company

Anchor Summer Beer
Anchor Brewing Company

Anchor Summer Beer

Anchor Summer Beer is an American wheat ale that was first brewed back in 1984. This is a really nice light refreshing beer. The initial pour has a really light crisp golden color with an unusually large head, lasted about 2-3 minutes. This is due to the protein contributed by the wheat which gives it such a large head. This summer beer is an all-malt beer with over 50% coming from the wheat and is fermented with a traditional “ale” yeast. This is a very easy beer to drink. Nothing stands out in terms of tastes which makes it for a nice even and easy drink to enjoy. I would definitely recommend this beer to all beer drinkers. Pick this one up before the summer is over!

ABV: 4.6%
IBU: Unknown

Justin Bieber Beats Out Top Female Pop Singers in Search in 2011

Justin BieberI know this news is disturbing to some, but according to Bing.com Justin Bieber beat out the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez for most searched artist in 2011.  I am going to guess it’s because of his crazy fans that threaten every female he walks within 2 feet of, remember the Kim Kardashian photo shoot or the threats against Selena Gomez?

Last year Lady Gaga took the top honors, but fell to number 5 this year, but I gather that’s because she doesn’t have her fans claiming she knocked them up -just a thought.  Yet Katy Perry was the top searched for female musician in 2011.  She had a big year with her wedding and her massive Teenage Dream Tour.

Other pop singers that topped the list this year are Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. Both had comebacks this year by releasing long awaited pop albums. Britney also hit the road to support Femme Fatale. Ms. Lopez also had a heavily publicized divorce from singer Marc Anthony and another year on Idol.

For a full list of Top Searched Musicians head over to http://www.BingTrends.com for a full list of search trends from 2011.

An Evening with Corey Taylor

An Evening with Corey Taylor
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

An Evening with Corey Taylor Milwaukee

I’ve kept every ticket stub for every show I’ve ever attended since my first show at age 11.  Over the course of 14 years I’ve attended 48 concerts and 14 festivals.  Never, ever have I attended a show quite like the Corey Taylor acoustic tour aptly titled “A Evening with Corey Taylor”.

Corey is known for his deep lyrics, his soul bearing voice and his appreciation for honesty, whether those he’s being honest about appreciate it or not.  Recently he authored “Seven Deadly Sins” and has taken his book tour on the road, along with his acoustic guitar, his hilarious stories and a promise to his fans of “I won’t lie to you while I’m up here.”

Corey opened his set Wednesday night with a common topic while in Wisconsin, the cold.  And of course, getting old, and how differently the cold affects you when you’re old, and a man.  Stating that ‘they’ should “Give you a book when you’re like six about all these changes that are going to happen” like the dropping of the boys.

He went on to talk about the holidays and his friends attending Thanksgiving at his house several years ago when he proudly cooked his first turkey.  Corey worked the crowd into fits of laughter as he talked about each of his friends and expressed his frustrations as they continued to complain about their families until he lost his cool on them, prompting more laughter from fans as he acted out the evening.  On a more serious note he ended the topic with the statement that, “You may not love the family you’re with, but you’ll die for the family you find over the years.”  Personally, I’m all for Corey going on the road and doing just stand up, this man could give Dennis Leary a run for his money.

The show moved into a reading from Corey’s book.  At this point in the tour he had worked through the whole book and decided to read the ending to the crowd.  He shared with fans that the original idea of an audio book had been thrown out by the publishers.  When Corey shared this with fans at the time that he was writing the book, there was such an overwhelming response and amount of calls demanding the audio version be made that publishers brought it back on the table and confirmed the audio version would be made and read by Corey himself.  He thanked the fans for making it happen but expressed that he “Had no clue how boring THAT would be.”  The room was pin quiet while Corey read except for well placed applause to key moments or funny quips exciting more laughter from fans.

When the book closed the lights came up, with plenty of prompting, and Corey opened the floor for a little Q&A.  After explaining several times to fans the difference between a question, which he would answer, and a request, which he could not fulfill, the questions started flowing.  This is something that not a lot of fans have the opportunity to do, so I hope each and every person at each stop of this tour can truly appreciate the gift they are being given.

After a short potty break “Because in my old age my itty bitty bladder can’t hold as much”, Corey came back on stage, the lights went back down and he broke into song.  Opening with acoustic versions of “Snuff”, “Through the Glass”, “Vermillion part 2″, and a very funny remade version of “Spit It Out” Corey worked the crowd, still joking between songs and throwing out dedications to Slipknot’s late bassist and great friend Paul Gray whom Corey says he knows “Is still with me every time I get on stage.”

Overall this show was funny, with its dedications and in depth discussion of Paul Gray it was heartfelt and a little sappy, and in every way, was one of the best shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending.  If you’ve missed this show, I recommend you check out the dates and swing by a show if it comes near you again, this is once in a life time and a must not miss for any fan of Corey Taylor, Slipknot or Stone Sour alike.

A few interesting question and answers that were enjoyed by all whether getting a good laugh or nearly breaking tears:

Q: Do you (Slipknot) really sniff a dead Crow before every show?

Yup, this was confirmed, so the next time someone says it’s a rumor, you can say you heard it here.  Corey Taylor has confirmed that before each Des Moines show in their early days they would huddle and each sniff a dead Crow in a jar provided by Clown.  However, Corey has specified that it was only at the Safari shows in Des Moines and never on the road.  An interesting tidbit; The Crow is now a permanent stage piece at Safari having been cemented into the newest stage built in the club.

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure in terms of music?

The answer; Everything.  Corey informed the crowd that they need to listen to the preshow music at their shows, because it’s coming from his iPod.  So, what do I remember hearing while waiting?  ‘Ghostbusters’

Q: Who in the music business would you punch in the face if you could and why?

After a little thought Corey answered with Cher.  The why; “That’s where it all started.  All that auto tune bullshit.”

Q: What is your hand gesture from?

Corey launched into an explanation about watching Kung Fu theatre from the 80′s and decided to use the hand gesture that the Kung Fu Masters use when dismissing a student.  He states that he was stunned when people started doing it back to him.  He went on to say that he wonders how many people actually know what it means.

Q: When will another CD come out?

Corey has confirmed that Stone Sour is working on a new demo.  He says that it’s “Much darker than ‘Audio Synchrony’.  It’s like ‘The Wall’ meets ‘Dirt’ on steroids.”  As a side note Corey confirmed that Slipknot will also be on tour next summer.

Favorite quotes of the evening not already mentioned:

“It’s not a Stone Sour song asshole, cuz I wrote it for Slipknot!”

“Watching him (Slash) play is like watching someone who isn’t even trying but it’s still fucking great.”  Also on Slash “We’re on stage and I can’t even look at him, I’m standing there trying not to go fan boy.”

“That’s the Wisconsin I want to be inside!…Sorry, I just went somewhere way wrong.”

Naked Raygun Rock Out Thanksgiving Eve!

Naked Raygun Metro Chicago 3

Hundreds of punk fans moshed their way into Thanksgiving with Naked Raygun last night. The crowd for sure brought their A-game for this joyus event. So many pits formed throughout the night. Some fans even tried to crowd surf which I just found hilarious. That may fly for a pop show but not for this hardcore/punk crowd. So many people bit it hard, I have to admit it was highly entertaining. For those unfamiliar of who Naked Raygun is, they formed in Chicago during 1981. They were one of the first U.S. post-punk bands of the ‘80s merging melodic sounds with punk. After a number of album releases in the ‘80s the band ended up splitting after the release of Raygun…Naked Raygun in 1990. Members went on to perform with other bands including Pegboy and The Bomb. Due to public demand for Naked Raygun in 1999 indie label Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records reissued all of Naked Raygun’s albums with bonus tracks. A compilation album was also produced including collected works from 1980-1992. After a massive turn out for their 2006 reunion at Riot Fest, playing to a sold out crowd of 4,000 people they decided to come back with new releases. Currently there is a release #4 of their 7” series and they are heading back into the studio at the end of the year to record more material. Tours are being set up for both the West Coast and Europe in 2012.

My Big Beautiful
Metro – Chicago, IL

My Big Beautiful Metro Chicago 2

Pop-punk band My Big Beautiful was one of many in last nights line up leading up to Naked Raygun’s headling show. The band formed back in 1993 from Joliet, IL. After taking a break in ’96 to pursue other music ventures the band ended up getting back together in 2003 and have been playing an aray of new & classic M.B.B. songs ever since. Last night was the perferct way to kick off this holiday weekend! This was my first time experiencing My Big Beautiful and it wont be my last. Their energy was fantastic and they had me at covering Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers “American Girl”. Before the show I saw Steev Custer running around the Metro with his kids, giving piggy back rides and just having a great time before the show. It was really awesome to see! During the show you could see his daughter waving to him from the balcony and he would just shoot her the biggest smile, it was the cutest thing ever! Steev even keeps a photo of his kids that sits on his amp on stage. It’s rare to see things like that. If you haven’t see My Big Beautiful I suggest you! Check out their Facebook page for your most recent M.B.B. updates.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Punkin Ale by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Punkin Ale

Wow! This beer is amazing. Definitely one of the most unique beers I have ever had. My initial attraction to this beer was the beer bottle’s upper logo which says “Punk.” When I saw that, I knew I had to try this beer. The initial pour had a copper color with a medium head and no lacing on the glass. The initial taste really brings out the cinnamon and brown sugar instantly. After my first sip, I was skeptical about the pumpkin flavoring because I couldn’t taste it right away. But after 2 or 3 sips the pumpkin and nutmeg tastes really stood out, almost as a surprise, and it was delicious! This is a perfect autumn beer and one that I highly recommend trying. Some beer drinkers might think that this is a type of beer that you would have one of, but I would definitely have a couple of these at a time as they are not as heavy as you would assume. Although, the alcohol content is 7.0%, which is on the higher end. I would also recommend letting this beer sit out on the counter for about 10 minutes after you have taken it out of the fridge. By doing this, you are allowing the flavors of the beer to come out. Go find this beer before it’s too late because this will be one of the better unique tasting beers you will try.

Punkin Ale is brewed by Dogfish Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware.

ABV: 7.0%
IBU: 28

AWOLNATION Not Your Fault Music VideoAWOLNATION’s Music Video for “Not Your Fault”

AWOLNATION recently premiered their video for “Not Your Fault” on MTV.  The video pays homage to the 1960′s clay-mation/stopmotion animation videos.  The band battles the  Abominable Snowman, a fire breathing creature from the black lagoon, and aliens in outer space.  The song is off their debut album, Megalithic Symphony

Music Video: Razika’s “Vondt i Hjeret”

Razika – Vondt i Hjertet from Razika Razika on Vimeo.

Razika recently released their newest video for “Vondt i Hjertet” (translation: “pain in heart”). During their trip to New York they recorded 4 music videos. This was also their first performance in the United States.

You can also  listen to tracks: “Aldri,” “Eg Vetsje,” and “Nytt Pa Nytt” off this year’s critically acclaimed Program 91 (Smalltown Supersound).

Re-Imagine This

Smashing Pumpkins Gish Siamese dream

Oh, you better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout – that’s Billy Corgan’s job, and if he can’t squeeze the last dollar out of your wallet with his skinny, wan hand you can bet he is going to pout; all the way to the bank.

There is nothing worse than an inflated and fading rock star repackaging his music at holiday time in an effort to guilt the fans into parting with their hard earned money. What have the “Pumpkins” done for us lately? If you ask Corgan, they have saved your youth and repackaged it with some bogus extras.

The website that hawks this warmed over tripe has a “message” from Billy that reads like a manifesto for all that is pompous and pretentious in music today. Ironically he was this pretentious 20 years ago and things haven’t changed.

To make matter more egregious there is a standard re-release and a “deluxe edition.” Do we really need a serving of cast-offs and basement demos to enrich our musical landscapes? The price for the new “deluxe edition” is double the price of the re-release.

“Gish” includes (and I quote) Original Album Remastered With Reimagined Cover Art -15 Previously Unreleased or Alternative Versions of Gish Era Songs – Previously Unreleased, Full Length DVD From The Metro 1990 – 6 Postcards Featuring Never-Before-Seen Band Photos – 24-page Booklet Featuring Complete Lyrics, Liner Notes by David Wild, and Track-by-Track Annotations by Billy Corgan.

Re-imagined Cover Art?” Now the die hard fans will be forced to buy it to complete their set. Good looking out for your peeps, Corgan.

“Gish-era” songs? Ah, the songs that weren’t good enough to actually go on “Gish.”  A Metro show that is old enough to drink and postcards?

“Siamese Dream” features basically the same things only more of them and a (slightly) more recent Metro show. Wow for only $30.00. This is my lucky day. (There is even a substantial price difference when ordering the digital download. The “deluxe edition” is $5.00 more per download.)

Call me crazy – but Corgan would do better by his fans to get off of his high horse and cut a new album. Make something relevant and fresh. Taking these songs – that sound pathetically dated anyway – and trying to prepackage them is a travesty.

This Christmas forget Corgan and his greedy ways. True Pumpkin fans already have “Gish” and “Siamese Dream.”  There will be a lot of competition for your holiday dollar. Don’t give it to a petulant sycophant unless you really want that re-imagined covert art and a new postcard collection.

Chiwawa: A Good Story with an Indifferent Sound

Chiwawa
Element
Satellite Records Canada

Chiwawa Element CoverSometimes you just want to relax and enjoy a disc. You read a lot about the group – you get the back-story and you want to root for them. In an ideal world you put on the disc and the music is solid and you realize that the good feelings you preconceived for the band will be rewarded.

Then there are times that the music just falls flat and you feel hoodwinked. You cringe your way through the review (no one really enjoys writing a bad review – no true music lover does anyway).

Chiwawa is that rare band that doesn’t commit to either one. Their story is a beautiful, modern day Indie film that may have been written by Diablo Cody. Two impossibly beautiful people marrying for citizenship only to blossom into true love. I’d buy that for a dollar.

“Element” is their latest release and it is just another one-dimensional electro-pop collection rife with repetitious beats and forced rhymes. The troubling element is that it isn’t terrible and it isn’t great. It is just a predictable computer generated dozen cuts designed to get your rump shaking and that is about it.

Krassy Halatchev and Laurie Gordon complement each other very well. You can hear the seamless collaboration on these electronic offerings.  You just find yourself wishing the stakes were higher.

“Another Moment” is the exception.  The quixotic blend of sounds – the haunting melody – the sweetness of Gordon’s vocals show what the duo could do if they were so inclined.

They have an impressive discography and their downloads are priced to be fan friendly. They are obviously doing something that is connecting. I just can’t figure out a way to put my finger on it.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Boont Amber Ale by Anderson Valley Brewing Co.

Boont Amber Ale
Anderson Valley Brewing Co.

Boont Amber Ale

The Boont Amber Ale is an American-style amber ale. The initial pour gives a really nice copper color with a medium body with a strong head and minimal lacing on the glass. The taste of the beer is a sweet carmel flavoring with a slight bitter taste, but not overwhelming at all. I don’t think there is really anything special about this beer but I would definitely drink this again.

The name of the beer comes from Boontling which is the focal center of the Anderson Valley. It was the first ale produced at the brewery’s famous Boonville brewery. According toe the local Anderson Valley dialect developed in the 1800s, they would say ‘It’s Bahl Hornin’!” which translates to “It’s good drinking.” I would have to agree.

ABV: 5.8%
IBU: 15

Death Angel Opens for Anthrax

Death Angel
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

Death Angel The Rave Milwaukee

The Bay Area has it’s fair share of thrashers and metal bands such as legends Metallica. It was only appropriate for Death Angel to join fellow Bay Area rockers Testament on tour with Anthrax headlining.

Death Angel was initially formed back in 1982 and released 6 studio albums. Back in 1988 they caught the attention of Geffen Records that spawned their album Act III. After an accident that left their drummer injured for over a year, the band broke up. It wasn’t until 1991 when they decided to regroup. Today the band is signed to Nuclear Blast and released their latest album, Relentless Retribution, September 14, 2011.

On Saturday night they played to a packed crowd of crazy metal heads in Milwaukee. It was closing night of the tour with Testament and Anthrax.

The 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Worship Music

Anthrax
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

Anthrax The Rave Milwaukee 2011

Anthrax released their 10th studio album Worship Music on September 12th. It’s been 8 years since the group released their last studio album, We’ve Come for You AllWorship Music is currently at #17 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums and peaked at the number 2 spot.

Anthrax’s “Fight ‘Em ‘Til You Can’t”

Anthrax was back at the Rave last night for the last night of their headlining tour with Testament and Death Angel.  Their set included “Fight ‘Em Til You Can’t,” “Earth on Hell,” “The Devil You Know,” “Caught in a Mosh,” “Indians,” “I am the Man,” “Among the Living,” and “Medusa” to name a few.  Some of their classics were expected, but the true highlights were a couple of the new songs from Worship that really killed.  The set also included “In The End” off Worship Music that was a tribute to Ronnie James Dio.

Their headlining tour didn’t end in Milwaukee by accident. Scott said that they planned it that way because he knows Milwaukee rocks.  The crowd didn’t disappoint and showed the guys their ultra super snazzy moshing skills.

Again, Anthrax didn’t disappoint. Now to Worship Music!

Eleanor Friedberger whites out Le Poisson Rouge

On a crisp evening in New York City, Eleanor Friedberger, one half of the brother sister duo The Fiery Furnaces, graced the stage of Le Poisson Rouge, performing selections from her debut solo album, Last Summer, as well as new material. Eleanor opened with the first single “My Mistakes”, donning a full white suit and matching white Keds.  Who said you can’t wear white after Labor Day?

Eleanor peppered her show with new material “a song about falling in love”, “Stare at the Sun”  and the rocking “That Was When I Knew” for the encore.  Her lyrics present sharp narratives with decisive repetition.  It’s especially noticeable live when she chimes “Wrong, wrong, wrong” in the later newbie and even in “Inn of the Seventh Ray” where a broken promise rings over and over in her memories.  She even counted out 2-0-1-0 for “Glitter Gold Year”.

Behind her mint green electric guitar and manicured bangs a la Patti Smith, she was completely comfortable on stage, except a moment before kicking into “Roosevelt Island”. Eleanor had to hold up saying she was tipsy and blamed it on the suit.  Fashion is painful.  She took a mini breather and a sip of her Corona.  All good!

Eleanor was happy to play an early show because she was due to attend a wedding post-concert.  Maybe an explanation for the all white ensemble?  Drawing from her recent album she performed “Scenes from Bensonhurst”, “Early Earthquake” and ended the set with “I Won’t Fall Apart on You”.  The fans at the lip of the stage bopped “on and on and on” to the conclusive song.  Post show, Eleanor got behind the merch table.  Let’s hope she made it in time to that wedding or her white hotness would have been missed for the matrimonial bliss.

Flashback Fridays: Tag Team’s “Whoomp! There It Is”

Tag Team’s “Whoomp! There It Is” Music Video

Ahh…remember this one? How could you forget it Tag Team’s “Whoopm! There It Is”? It was everywhere! You may remember the Mighty Ducks 2 soundtrack or the 1993 World Series.  For me the song is ingrained in my head from the grade school dances.  The song hung on to the Billboard Charts for 45 weeks and peaked at #2 in July of 1993.  The rapping duo, Cecil Glenn (aka DC the Brain Supreme) and Steve Gibson (aka Steve Roll’n) called it quits back in 1995. They are a true one hit wonder.

And No that is not Barack Obama at the 1:01 minute mark. It sure does look like him though!

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Sessions Premium Dark Lager Black by Full Sail Brewing Company

Sessions Premium Dark Lager Black
Full Sail Brewing Co.

Sessions Premium Dark Lager Black

When I first started this beer blog, one of the first beers I posted was the Sessions Premium Lager which was the light sister beer to this one. You can read my review of that beer here which I happened to enjoy more than this one. The Sessions Dark Lager pours a very dark brownish color with a fizzy head. The head lasted about 3-4 minutes before I was able to start drinking it. The initial taste really brought out Chocolate and Coffee flavors. They were very strong on the tongue. Though you can’t see the carbonation in the beer because of it’s dark color, you can really tell there is a lot of carbonation when you taste it. The beer finishes with a vert malty taste with chocolate and strong spices. I would definitely prefer the Sessions Lager over this beer. Though it was a dark beer, it was definitely drinkable and worth checking out if you like those coffee and chocolate tastes in beer.

Sessions beer is brewed by Full Sail Brewing Company located in Hood River, Oregon.

ABV: 5.4%
