Black Stone Cherry just started their new headlining tour just days ago. Last night they stopped at Austin’s Fuel Room in Libertyville, Illinois with Rains and Cavo opening the night. Before the show I had the chance to sit down with Jon and John (full interview coming soon). Chris was supposed to join us but I was informed that he was sick. This is something I could completely understand as the bug has been going around, and I was sick myself. I found out his sickness wasn’t a virus as Chris started talking about how he was feeling while onstage. He mentioned how just hours before the show he was in the bus crying trying to find a reason to get up. Chris has been battling depression for 11 years and did not have a problem with letting the crowd know. Last night he had a smile on his face and couldn’t be more appreciative of the fans being so supportive of the him and the band. He dedicated “In My Blood” to all the fans that know what it’s like to go through some of the darkest days.
On a lighter note, the band has such an incredible chemistry onstage as well as off. Each member of the band is seriously talented. Drummer John Fred Young has a lot of spunk and “you can’t leave home without him,” as Jon Lawhon told me in an interview before the show. His incredible energy is hard to miss and fans in the crowd took note. Jon and Ben bounce around the stage as if the floor beneath them was a trampoline. Chris doesn’t need to cover the stage to get noticed. Chris’ vocal cut through the bass, drums, and guitar and delivers the lyrics with such soul. Their stage presence and talent weren’t the only things that won over the crowd.
The guys as a collective have a great harmony as many rock bands don’t even try to attempt some acapella harmonies during songs. The comedy highlight of the show came from Chris. He was worried that no one would show up because it was a “Tuesday night,” but it was Wednesday. Chris had a Spinal Tap moment and everything was taken in stride.
The band is truly down to earth and has that famous Southern hospitality, yet don’t underestimate the group because the guys can play hard and rock harder! The interview with Jon and John will be posted here shortly! They talk about touring, almost getting arrested, and what’s on their tour rider!
