Daughtry is out on tour supporting their 3rd studio album, Break the Spell. The album has already been met with rave reviews and, as expected, last night showcased much of the new material off the album. Their previous albums Daughtry and Leave This Town lead to the band snagging top music awards and nominations.  They took home several American Music Awards for Breakthrough Artist, Best Adult Contemporary Artist, Best Pop/Rock Album, as well as being nominated for several Grammys, and numerous Billboard Music Awards.  It’s no doubt that band is back and ready to meet the success of their new album head on and they are doing it the best way they know how…touring. Daughtry’s Break the Spell 2012 tour started Tuesday night at University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois.  It really is only beginning of this hefty summer tour that is set to end June 13th in Austin, Texas.

The night was filled with many new songs from Break the Spell including the self-title track, “Renegade,” and “Crazy” to just name a few. Chris informed the crowd that Break the Spell was the new record they had out, yet I am sure 99% of the people in the arena knew that factoid. After he mentioned the new album he told the crowd that they were going to be perform many of the new songs off the album and he nonchalantly added with a smile, “some old ones too.”   Chris introduced “Outta My Head” as their upcoming single and noted, “This is probably my favorite song off the new album.”Daughtry Convocation Center Dekalb IL NIU Campus

While Chris and the guys were on top of their performance, the sound wasn’t.  The Convocation Center at the NIU campus is an arena that was meant for sports not concerts.  The empty seats behind the band were a contributing factor to fans inability to really hear Chris’ vocals, especially if not seated directly in front of the stage.  The sound bounced around so much it was a bit distracting.  Don’t take this as a jab at the band, as it was more circumstantial and the show really needs a backdrop behind the stage to prevent that from happening again. However, I did expected a bit more stage production for this tour as the band has a huge following, numerous accolades, and 2.4 million followers on Facebook alone. The band had a much stripped down rock show, where there usually is nothing wrong with that, but they are playing arena’s where there is a lot of space around them and they could have used some visuals or even a “light show” to enhance the experience.  Yet maybe I am still just a bit bitter about the sound.

While I am a music critic, I really mean nothing when the crowd speaks for themselves.  Even without a pop and circumstance, the loyal Daughtry fans loved the night and the mix of the old as well as new material.  The Break the Spell Tour is one to see before the summer ends.
