Celebrate Memorial Day at 2012 Rocklahoma

2012 Rocklahoma
Pryor, OK
Friday-Sunday, May 25-27, 2012
Doors: 3:00 p.m.

Rocklahoma returns with yet another stellar lineup of top rock artists for a monstrous Memorial Day weekend party, May 25-27. The 2012 lineup features a variety of headliners and supporting acts that span several decades and genres of music. Creed, Rob Zombie and supergroup Chickenfoot will close each respective day’s festivities. With three stages and well over sixty hard rock acts, music will literally flow non-stop from early afternoon until late evening.

Guitar aficionados should be salivating to find Slash, Joe Satriani of Chickenfoot and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine demonstrating their masterful fretwork in a live setting. Each has redefined music via their trademark styles, they are true pioneers of their craft. Those who prefer vocals need to look no further than Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche, his operatic voice is arguably one the the best in metal, past or present.

The festival also features a handful of bands that recently broke out on rock radio. Most notably, Chevelle and Volbeat have been around for years; yet both had their first Billboard #1 singles within the last few months. Both bands have been touring relentlessly and come in to Rocklahoma primed to impress. Other bands to appear that are currently sitting on hit singles, and on the verge of breaking out, include Janus, Redlight King, Aranda and New Medicine. Looking for a positive message with your music? P.O.D., Eve to Adam and Red are slated to perform Friday night and deliver a proclamation beyond the typical lyrical trifecta of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Creed were among the top of the charts during the late ’90s. Their frontman Scott Stapp blew away the crowd when they opened their 2012 tour in Chicago a couple weeks ago. They’ll be looking to do the same in Pryor, OK at the top of Friday night’s lineup. The original members of The Darkness also recently reunited after five year hiatus. The British glam rockers brought 1980′s hair metal back to the forefront when “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” smashed the charts in 2003. They will perform on Saturday’s Rocklahoma lineup, hopefully with rumored new music in tow.

Official Rocklahoma line-ups for each day
Friday (May 25):  Creed, Slash, Chevelle, P.O.D., Cavo, Adelitas Way, Red, Redlight King, Janus, Eve to Adam, Beneath, Fist of Rage, Lynam, Pretty Little Suicide, Hessler, Down & Dirty, Ragdoll, Sunset Riot, Absence of Ink, For the Broken, Echo Fuzz, Shotgun Rebels, Soulicit, Rocker Lips and Mine Enemies Fall

Saturday (May 26): Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Theory of a Deadman, Volbeat, The Darkness, 10 Years, Pop Evil, Trivium, New Medicine, Anti-Mortem, Gypsy Pistoleros, Lillian Axe, Firstryke, S.E.X. Department, Ruff Justice, Switchblade Scarlett, On Fire, Villians Dance, Stun, Dagger, Unwritten Rulz, Echo Vendetta, A Good Fight and Sweatin Bullets

Sunday (May 27): Chickenfoot, Queensryche, Jackyl, Puddle of Mudd, Hellyeah, Black Stone Cherry, Art of Dying, Aranda, Charm City Devils, Rains, Falling in Reverse, Wildstreet, Black Tora, The Glitter Boys, Diemonds, Desi and Cody, David Castro Band, The Hawkeyes, We the Ghost, Through the Thorns.

Weekend general admission and VIP reserved seats are still available.  Individual single day general admission tickets are also on-sale now (Friday, Saturday or Sunday).  Don’t miss out on this blockbuster Memorial Day Weekend concert!  Arrive early and discover some new music.

Chilly Gonzalez hosts the “Piano Talk Show” at Brooklyn’s Bell House

Though not many people may be familiar with Chilly Gonzalez, there is no doubt you’ve heard his work.  He is the Grammy-nominated producer behind Feist’s The Reminder, as well as her most recent album Metals.  His tune, “Never Stop,” became ubiquitous with the iPad commercials.

Born Jason Charles Beck, Gonzalez is a musical genius that transitions between melancholic piano virtuoso to playful comic lyricist.  This was beautifully displayed on Friday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn.  With accompaniment from the string section named Fuck Lucks, Gonzalez was part musical lecturer and hilarious host dressed in a satin robe and slippers.  First, there was a discussion about major and minor keys that stemmed from his use of the Flat E minor.   He compared the major keys to the right wing and the status quo, while the minor end coincidentally embraced by the minorities.  Gonzalez played well known tunes, such as “Happy Birthday” and “Frère Jacques” in minor keys to demonstrate the somber reversal of fortune in a simple change of scale.

From major and minor, Gonzalez shifted gears to the rap genre and how it taught him about ambition.  He sang “Beans” as a comic play on the ghetto fabulous lifestyle of excess.  Rapping sick lyrics like, “And when the beans talk, I hear the echo / Speaking to me in the voice of Mr. Gordon Gekko.” Gonzalez continued his musical education covering music counts from 4/4 to 6/8, identifying the latter count sequence as “kinda rapey”.  Throughout his musical lessons, he had members of the audience join him at his piano, playing side by side.

Given the choice of another long drawn out somber piano piece or a story on how he worked with Drake, the audience chose Drake.  Drake had sampled Gonzalez’s work in “Outro” for his So Far Gone Mixtape without giving Chilly his due.  Needless to say, Gonzalez wrote a reactionary song, “The Grudge” to cope with the episode, which he never shared with Drake.  But as fate would have it, the fellow Canadian had coincidentally bought a condo in the same building as Gonzalez’s father.  Drake’s people arranged a meeting for the two and a face to face collaboration was realized when they performed together at the 2011 Juno Awards.  No bad blood after all.

The show closed with Gonzalez atop the piano playing tunes with his feet, which somehow is not surprising from such a musical genius.  Chilly Gonzalez is releasing Solo Piano II later this year via Arts & Crafts.  Let the education continue.

Hunter Hayes at the Rave in Milwaukee

Hunter may only be 20 years old, but he is somewhat of a veteran in the country music scene.  A Louisiana native, he started his career at a tender age, making the rounds on the television circuit. Hunter is touring in support of  his forth studio album, simply titled Hunter Hayes, marking his major label debut with Atlantic Records Nashville. Hunters self-titled debut was performed solely by him, virtually unheard of in Nashville, and was co-produced by legendary producer Dann Huff. In 2010 Hunter wrote the song Play for Rascal Flatts and in 2012 Hunter opened for the guys on their  Thaw Out Tour. Hunter is without question an artist to be watched. If the enthusiasm of the crowd at the Rave is any indication, you better get on board now or miss your chance at seeing an artist rise to great heights on the national stage first hand.

Miranda Lambert’s “On Fire” Tour burns up Milwaukee

Miranda Lambert On Fire 2012 Tour

The past year has been good to Miranda. From marrying fellow country singer and The Voice judge, Blake Shelton last May, and performing “America the Beautiful” at the XLVI Superbowl she has every reason to be loving life.  Not to mention she is also taking part in Brad Paisley’s Virtual Reality Tour on June 6 at the historic Wrigley Field in the middle of her extensive tour along with the Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California.

Miranda Lambert On Fire 2012 TourMiranda’s 5th studio release is titled Four the Record and was released off Sony Music Nashville.  The album, co-written by Miranda, includes songs penned by Brandi Carlile, one of her Pistol Annie band members, Ashley Monroe, and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley.   Guest performances include Josh Kelley, Steve Winwood, and Blake Shelton. Her release of Four the Record broke a 47-year record by making Miranda the first country music artist to have each of her releases debut at the #1 spot on the charts.  It also needs mention that Four the Record was also certified Gold.

Miranda is currently out on her On Fire tour with support from Chris Young and Jerrod Niemann. The tour kicked off mid January with back-to-back sold-out performances in Rockford, Illinois and La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Last night the tour stopped at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee and it was easy to see what the sold out shows where all about. While Miranda’s show was nothing less than pure entertainment for all in attendance, make no mistake, this ones for the ladies in the crowd. With the tone set by a video intro of strong women throughout history, if you were a guy coming to Miranda’s world to look for dainty ladies,,,,wrong night fella. Miranda’s , On Fire tour is a must see with great songs, great performances, and well done production. If you see shes coming to your town, you better get your tickets fast as this is sure to be one of the must see concerts of the season.

Music…I keep it rural
Beer…I keep it plural
” – Jerrod Niemann

Jerrod Niemann at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee

Jerrod Niemann is not fresh blood in Nashville. It wasn’t that long ago when Jerrod saw more success as just a songwriter than actually performing and recording his own music.  He’s written for the likes of Garth Brooks, as well as,  Jamey Johnson, Neal McCoy, Julie Roberts, Flynnville Train and Zona Jones.   His taste of success came with his first studio release,  Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury. The album produced his biggest hits to date  “Lover,Lover” and “What Do You Want,” and “One More Drinkin’ Song.”  His newest single “Shinin’ On Me” is off his still untitled upcoming album. There is a music video in the works for “Shinin’ On Me” which will include guest appearances from his friends and band members.

Jerrod is currently joined by Chris Young and Miranda Lambert on Lambert’s On Fire tour. He also is making stops at Country USA, Star Spangled Banner Celebration, Daupin’s Countryfest, Jam in the Valley Festival, and Country Jam USA.  Check out tour dates and photos from Jerrod’s set below.

Creed Kicks Off The “2 Nights Live” Tour in Chicago

Creed
2 Nights Live 2012
The Chicago Theatre – Chicago, IL
4/14/2012

Creed is:
Scott Stapp - lead vocals
Mark Tremonti - lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals
Brian Marshall - bass
Scott Phillips – drums

Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti 2nd night at the Chicago Theatre

Creed doesn’t have a new album out yet, but that hasn’t stopped them from hitting the road. Scott Stapp, Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips decided to get back together to tour earlier this year. This reunion is the second go-around since their 2004 separation. The last time was back in 2009 with their 4th studio album, Full Circle, which was accompanied by a tour that ran into 2010.  Both parties have kept busy during Creed’s downtime as Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips formed Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy and as Alter Bridge released their first album, One Day Remains, back in 2004. Stapp released his first solo album, The Great Divide, in 2005. He also recorded a second solo album, but it appears to be currently shelved as Scott and Mark have been writing new material for Creed.

Scott Stapp at the Chicago Theatre for Creed's 2 Nights Live Tour

Last night was night two of Creed’s kick off to their 2 Nights Live tour.  The tour continues through late August at the Alaska State Fair and includes a stop for the rock fest, Rocklahoma.  The festival and fair stops will be anybody’s guess as to what they will play, but the first night at the Chicago Theatre on Friday covered the entire My Own Prison album plus a few other goodies from Human Clay and Weathered.  Night two featured Human Clay from beginning to end with some of their biggest hits from My Own Prison including “One,” “My Own Prison,” and “Torn” and they capped off the night with “My Sacrifice.”  The set was a huge flashback to 1999, which included Scott growing his trademark hair back.

Creed Chicago TheatreThe stage had amazing back lighting that was appropriate for a rock band making a comeback, yet neither Scott nor Mark really talked much between songs.  Actually, Mark didn’t say anything at all and Scott only introduced a couple of the songs.   This wasn’t so much a bad thing; I was expecting more of a VH1 Storytellers’ vibe but it was still entertaining to see them play the album straight through. For “Say I” Scott said, “This was the inspiration to the album’s name. It took us away to another place.”  He also remarked right before “Wash Away the Years” that his sister inspired the song.  The entire night was semi-surreal.  With eyes closed it really felt like someone hit play on jukebox as Scott nailed each of the songs. He didn’t stray too much from the original lyrics or arrangements.

Even though the band hails from Florida, Chicago has accepted both Creed and Alter Bridge alike as one of their own.  Magic happens when Tremonti and the crew come to town, yet there was a bit of doubt as to the success of this two night residency. Scott’s history in Chicago has been a shaky one that included fans demanding refunds due to his less than tolerable behavior on stage.  Last night Scott proved himself to be as strong as ever and the crowd opened their arms to Creed, showing that everything that happened in the past is all just water under the Alter Bridge. Hopefully Creed fans will soon see a new studio album with original songs from the original band members!

Shinedown Roars Like a Lion on the Avalanche Tour

Brent Smith Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012

Shinedown could very well go down in history as having one of the greatest frontmen in rock and roll.  The band also has that special sauce with a bite to make them stand out in a world saturated by musicians. Each one of their four studio albums placed on rock charts and not many rock acts can say that.  Collectively their albums have already sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

zach myers Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012The group just released their fourth studio album, Amaryllis, and it has already spawned the radio rock anthem “Bully.”  Alongside Amaryllis’ release accompanied an eBook FOR YOUR SAKE: Inside the Making of Shinedown’s Amaryllis. It is an interactive book with 75 pages of words, never-before-seen photos, and videos. The eBook was a joint effort with rock journalist Jonah Bayer and Atlantic Records. The eBook is available for purchase here for $5.99.

Last night as Shinedown took the stage the first thing that struck me was Brent’s appearance.  Last time I saw Shinedown was back in 2010 and Brent looked like he filled out (it happens to the best of us).  Yet, when he walked out onstage last night, my mouth dropped. He looked fantastic! His weight loss didn’t just affect his physique; his energy level was at an all-time high. Brent was intense and much more dramatic than he was two years ago. Now let’s get something straight here–back in 2010 I thought the show was amazing; this time around I was just blown away.

Brent and Zach mix to make up that special sauce I was talking about earlier. Their comradery onstage shows the love between the guys.  Zach took to his solos with such ease as not to skip a beat. As many Shinedown fans know, Zach takes to his solo work when Shinedown is in hiatus mode, so he manages to keep his chops up to par.

I do need to mention the spectacular lighting for Shinedown. I really didn’t think the stage was going to be so lit up as it was even though this is Shinedown we are talking about.  The lighting was so poor for the openers Art of Dying and Adelitas Way that there was some concern of what it was going to look like when the headliners hit the stage.  All the light was aimed at the back of the stage by the drummer yet both openers took the very front of the stage with little light.

Brent Smith Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012

The set was a great mix of songs from each of their 4 albums and the night ended with some of their biggest hits to date including “Second Chance,” “Simple Man,” and “Bully.”

Setlist:

Sound of Madness
Diamond Eyes
If You Only Knew
Save Me
Devour
Nowhere Kids
Crow and Butterfly
Unity
Amaryllis
Adrenaline
45
Bully
Simple Man
Second Chance
Fly From the Inside

The Avalanche Tour runs through the end of April with May filled with headlining shows and festivals such as the Carolina Rebellion. See their tour itinerary below.

Adelitas Way The Rave Milwaukee Avalanche Tour

Adelitas Way is currently on tour supporting Shinedown on the Avalanche Tour.  With their new album, Home School Valedictorian, in hand they are set to take on the Avalanche Tour as well hitting some of the top rock festivals this summer.

These Las Vegas rockers have come a long way from playing local Las Vegas clubs.  They have opened for such stellar acts like Shinedown and Theory of a Deadman since 2005.  I was first introduced to the band back in 2007 as they snagged the lucky opening spot for one of Hinder’s shows at the House of Blues in Las Vegas.  It was only a matter of time before they were going to hit it big.

Art of Dying The Rave Milwaukee Avalanche Tour 2012

Art of Dying is currently on the road opening for the Avalanche Tour with Adelitas Way and Shinedown.  They’ve been on the road most of 2011 supporting the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace, and Theory of a Deadman. The reason for all this touring…Vices and Virtues, which is their first major label release through Warner Brothers/Intoxication Records, aka Disturbed’s label.

Times are looking good for these guys and it doesn’t end at the Avalanche Tour.  Their trek continues throughout the summer including some large rock festivals like Rock Fest and Rocklahoma. Check out the full tour itinerary and photos below:

United Brad Stands

BRAD
United We Stand
Razor & Tie
Release: 24 April 2012

Brad celebrates their 20th year as a band, and releases their 5th album this month. Brad began as the side project for members Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Regan Hagar (Satchel and formerly a member of Malfunkshun), Shawn Smith (also a member of Pigeonhed and Satchel), and Jeremy Toback. Brad is a Seattle band from the 90s which includes one of the founding members of Pearl Jam, the fathers of the grunge sound, yet their music is more chill and psychedelic. For someone who can very rarely relax, I have trouble understanding these jams. If I still hit the hash pipe, it may help. Though I have to admit that Shawn Smith’s lead vocals are beautiful on “Make the Pain go away” the rest of the tracks leave me confused.. I just don’t get it. Although by the sounds of the jam session album the boys are so chilled out, I don’t think they care if I’m grooovin or not, because they sure are regardless. If you already like Brad, or the guys other full time bands give it a listen, you should love it as the sound seems consistent with previous works. Regardless, give “Make the Pain go away” a spin, it will (cliche enough) take some pain away, for sure.

12 Acts to Watch at Lollapalooza in 2012

Lolla 2012 Santigold Sharon Van Etten Dev

It’s been awhile since a festival has seen this much speculation about its line-up.  Lollapalooza’s line-up was “leaked” twice before the actual announcement come down the pipe from Lollapalooza.  The first was a Twitter hoax and the second came just a few days ago with a nice visual of the full line-up for 2012.  As the second leak appeared online the chatter spun into high gear.  The talk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing in Chicago and Milwaukee so close to Lollapalooza was brought up in defense of how “off” the leak had to be.  Also no one could believe that Black Sabbath would play a show without Bill Ward, and possibly, Tony Iommi due to his cancer.  Yet some people forget that Black Sabbath is probably getting paid a pretty penny to be a headliner and I am going to gander that Black Sabbath didn’t reunite because they thought of some killer new material to perform.  It all comes down to money and if Bill Ward won’t play they will find someone else to, and if Tony can’t make it, the same will happen.

Aside from the conversation above, people aren’t exactly salivating at the mouth about the line-up, as it was very apparent on Lolla’s Facebook page when the leaks began and started to be confirmed.  The thing is The Black Keys just played Chicago and hit Milwaukee May 16th, Florence + The Machine is set to play Milwaukee at the end of April, and as previously stated, The Red Hot Chili Peppers is playing dates in Chicago close to Lolla.  That being said, there isn’t much of a draw for the Midwest as most of the headliners have or will hit the area relatively close to Lolla time.  It would be nice if Lolla announced a really large act that would be more of a draw, and the one thing missing from the line-up is the hip hop/rap act.  It was starting to be a staple of the fest for a couple years running, but it looks like Coachella took that thunder this year.  Heck even Summer Camp snagged Common.

So why go? There are so many talent acts performing that it’s not even funny.  Here’s our list of the 12 non-headlining acts that are sure to grab attention at Lollapalooza.

Dev – Pop/Dance

She likes her bass down low…really: http://thedeadhub.com/2011/03/03/spotlight-dev-talks-sxsw-working-with-the-cataracs-and-fashion/
