Halestorm is having a fantastic year and one of their big breaks came in the most unlikely places….Glee.  While Glee is one of those shows that it’s either loved or hated, one can’t deny the fact that having a song or an entire album featured on the show means being exposed to millions that may not have heard the music before.  Around the time of Glee Halestorm also released the EP Hello, It’s MZ. Hyde and then soon after the full album, The Strange Case Of …, which rose to the top of the charts and I personally can’t think of another band who deserves it more.

It has been awhile since I’ve seen Halestorm live; it was back in 2010 on the Uproar Tour. I actually ran into Lzzy backstage while interviewing New Medicine and she couldn’t have been more kind and welcoming.  Back in 2010 they were the openers on the main stage and today are headlining their own shows and are currently second on the bill of the Carnival of Madness Tour right under Evanescence. After the Carnival of Madness Tour wraps up in the US, the band is headed to Europe through the fall.

Evanescence was back at the Rave last night in Milwaukee. It felt like Amy Lee and the band were just there a couple months ago, when in actuality it’s almost been a year. The band took Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen’s group, The Pretty Reckless, on tour as an opening act. This fall Evanescence hit the road with Halestorm, Chevelle, Cavo, and New Medicine on the Carnival of Madness Tour.

Ever since the band announced the release of their third studio album, the band has been on the road and hit some of the major rock festivals this summer. The band even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway in January. Last night Evanescene returned to the Rave before they embark on their UK leg of the current tour.

Coping with the Heat at Lollapalooza

xrt misting tentLollapalooza started yesterday to a packed crowd and high heat and full sun.  To say it’s hot outside is an understatement.  When patrons pay big money to spend 3 days out in the heat enjoying their favorite artists there has to be a way to cool down.

Having Lollapalooza in Grant Park makes a great location for a festival with great views such as Lake Michigan and Buckingham Fountain, but one drawback is all the concrete that collects all the rays of the sun and lack of trees to escape from it.  Need to find shade? Here’s where to find it and places to avoid.

The Red Bull Soundstage and stages on the north end of the park were good for keeping down the heat due to the fact there was grass and not concrete. It made all the difference especially as the midday and early afternoon hit.

The BMI stage is the best to escape the sun! The stage is nuzzled between a set of trees where many people came to cool down and may not have even known the artist.

The worst stage to be in for the heat was the Playstation stage in the afternoon.  Yesterday during Die Antwoord’s set, there was a handful of us that walked away to find shade as balls of sweat were rolling off our head and back.  It wasn’t pretty.  The good part was, even when finding shade, we could still hear Die Antwoord’s set.

cta cooling bus lollapalooza

The CTA supplies buses around the park for cooling stations.  Yesterday those buses were packed!  Chicago radio station, WRT supplied a misting station for people to stand in or run through.

Forget sun block? No problem! American Family Insurance was around to give out sun block, ear plugs, and hand sanitizer.

Headed downtown today? Don’t forget to dress cool, but sandals are a no-no! Against the steamy concrete, the flip flops will burn your feet!

The Lollapalooza Lowdown!

coldplay lollapaloozaLollapalooza starts tomorrow and we have the lowdown!

2012 tickets sold out in records time, 71 days prior to the event, but those who didn’t score the coveted tickets can stream the show at http://youtube.com/lollapalooza. Live streams and interviews will be available for Jack White, AVICII, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Ocean, The Shins, Florence + The Machine, and more.

Something cool this year is the stand-alone LollaShop.  The Shop is open to the public through August 6th and has Lollapalooza merchandise and merch from Sony, Goorlin Bros. Hats, Baggu plus many more.  The LollaShop is located Thompson Hotel and the Lounge will host events and artist appearances, and yoga.  Make sure to reserve a spot by RSVPing at http://do312.com/lollashop.

When there is just too much to carry, State Farm is providing a bag check. This is free and located west of Buckingham Fountain.

Lolla + Instagram + Free WIFI

This year Lollapalooza is having bands and fans Instagram photos showing up on the jumbotron around the stages.  Remember to tag all Lollapalooza photos this weekend in Instagram with #lolla.  Don’t use Instagram? iPhone and Android photos also show up in the Lollapalooza mobile app that is available for free on Google Play and iTunes.

To assist in uploading all those Instagram photos, Lolla is providing FREE WIFI around the park.  There will be hotspots near Buckingham Fountain, Lederhosen’s Biergarten, Uncorked Win Lounge, all Lolla Lounges, and more.  The network to select is “2012 Lolla.”

What’s Allowed and Not Allowed in the Park

Since it’s been hot around Chicago and the Midwest, festivals such and Summerfest and now Lollapalooza are allowing patrons to bring in 2 SEALED bottles into the festival.  Also allowed is an empty, refillable bottle.  There will be commemorative CamelBak water bottles and packs at merch booths.  The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic containers in the park with partners Boxed Water and Vita Coco Coconut Water.

Along with the sealed bottles the following items are ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Blankets, Sheets, Towels

Umbrellas (ONLY Hand-Held)

Soft-Sided Coolers

Baby Strollers

Non-Professional Recording Equipment (Point & Shoot Cameras, Flip Video Cameras, etc.)

The following items are NOT ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Weapons of Any Kind, including Fireworks or Explosives of Any Kind

Illegal or Illicit Substances of Any Kind

Large Backpacks (Framed, Hiking Backpacks, etc.)

Glass Containers and Metal Aerosol Cans, including Sunscreen in Aerosol Cans.

Outside Food or Drinks (including Alcohol), except Two Factory-Sealed Water Bottles (up to 1 Liter each)

Skateboards, Scooters or Personal Motorized Vehicles

Bicycles Inside Festival Grounds (Plenty Bike Racks are available near The Box Office).

Carts, Tents & Chairs of Any Kind

Hard-Sided Coolers

Pets (except Service Dogs)

Professional Recording (Photo, Video, Audio) Equipment (NO Detachable Zoom Lense, Tripods or Other Commerical Equipment

No Unauthorized/Unlicensed Vendors Allowed. No Unauthorized Solicitations, Handbills, Sampling, Give-Aways, etc.

For the newcomers to Lolla the food is plentiful and diverse.  Chef Graham Elliot returned as the Culinary Ambassador to oversee the food is top notch.

Not everyone eats meat and besides having some great choices from food vendors, there is also the return of the Farmers Market. The Farmers Market will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free patrons.

Lollapalooza started with showcasing music, but today Lollapalooza has much more to experience than just music.

Green Workshops

In conjunction with the Farmers Market, there will be brief urban gardening workshops provided by Compass Green. These workshops support education in low-income schools.  These workshops are at the south end of Green Street each day of Lolla at 1p.m.

For those who are bringing the kids along there is Kidzapalooza.  Kids 10 and under enter the festival within Lolla for free.  It has its own stage and interactive games from Rock Star Video Karaoke to hip-hop workshops with the Q Brothers. Face painting is also taken to a whole other level as kids are transformed into rock stars and get a photo shoot all glammed up.

Do312 Celebrity Kickball

For the 3rd year running, DO312 put together a stellar line-up for the game that takes place Saturday morning at 11:15a.m.  at the north end of the festival by the Red Bull Soundstage.  This year’s celebrities include Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Chef Guy Fieri, Ryan Cabrera, Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, Chris Holmes, Greg Corner, Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Paradise, Dave Ziebarth, Kaylee DeFer from Gossip Girl.

Date: Saturday, July 4, 2012
Time:11:15 a.m.
Place: Grant Park/Lollapalooza Grounds
Who:  Many celebrities

do312 celebrity kickball game

For the past 2 years the Celebrity Kickball game at Lollapalooza has been quite entertaining.  Most observers that arrived at Lolla early on Saturday ran into the game in full kick-ass mode.  Some walked right past as the likes of Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) and Aaron Paul (Prison Break) showed the crowd their kickball skills, or maybe lack of. This year Aaron Paul is back and will be joined by Chris Holmes, Greg Corner, Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Paradise, Dave Ziebarth, Kaylee from Gossip Girl and more!

So where do you find the kickball game? The game starts at 11:15 a.m. and last year it took place in front of the North side stage, which would be The Red Bull Soundstage this year.

FYI this year the game is presented by Groupon and Fender donated a trophy for the winning team!

Cage the Elephant Hangout Music FestivalI see the new trend in live music is just to start your own music festival if you have a recognizable name in the industry.  Ozzy has been doing it for years (Ozzfest), Dave Matthews attempted it last year (Dave Matthews Band Caravan), and Metallica just started theirs this year (Orion Music + More Festival).  While this is news to me, Cage the Elephant’s Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival is in it’s second year running.  The band made great strides in Kentucky, and for that, the band created the Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival and this year it takes place September 28 & 29, 2012 just outside of Bowling Green, KY at Ballance Farms.

Tickets are $45 including fees and camping. Tickets will go on-sale on July 20th at 10:00 AM Eastern at www.starrynightsfestival.com

Country Thunder: The Line-up, The Stages, and The Schedule

Country Thunder 2012 Twin Lakes Easton Corbin, Big Kenny, Jason AldeanCountry Thunder in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, is just under a week away and marks the midway point of the summer festival season. For the Twin Lakes Country Thunder, there are always a couple things you can count on while attending the 4 day country fest.  First is the heat, which has been lingering in the Midwest for the past 15 days or so. Second is the rain; as it always rains at least one day over the 4 days and creates mud puddles in the campgrounds, but no one seems to mind.  The third is the fantastic music Country Thunder draws to the Midwest.  This year could be the best line-up to date as Big & Rich, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, and Toby Keith headline.  Yet, the only thing that may not happen this year is the rain, but maybe Country Thunder will be what draws the much needed rain to the Midwest.

Just issued By Country Thunder and the Order of the Kenosha County Parks Dept. :

Currently the County of Kenosha is under dangerous fire conditions therefore as of yet:
No campfires, grilling with charcoal or wood,
Fireworks or careless use of smoking materials at country thunder is strictly prohibited.

The Stages

Last year was the first year the second stage, the Frat House, was added during the day and included performers such as Steal Magnolia and Jason Jones.  The stage was a saving grace as the previous artists mentioned were scheduled to perform on the main stage, but the rain forced them to play on the Frat Stage under the tent.  This year two new stages have been added, minus the Frat House Stage; the GAC Country Thunder Stage and The Electric Thunder stage – schedules for both stage are below. These stages are host to the up-and-comers in country music and a DJ throughout the night until 2 A.M.

What You Can and Cannot Bring – Direct from Country Thunder’s site

No: Instruments; Knives/Weapons; Chains/Chain Wallets; Outside Food or Beverage (into venue); Camelpacks; Tents in venue; Flags in venue; Refunds or Exchanges; Video Cameras; Audio Recording Devices; Flasks; Professional Cameras; Pets (in concert bowl); Drugs or Drug Paraphernalia; Coolers in venue; Laser Pointers; Excess Baggage; Umbrellas; or Chairs with Canopies.

OK: Backpacks (medium); Hats; Sun Block; Lighters; Sunglasses; Beach Towel; One Unopened Bottle of Water; 12 & Under Free (except in RSVD or VIP area); Fanny Packs; Digital Cameras (non professional); Disposable Cameras; Film Cameras (non professional)

Country Thunder Twin Lakes Aaron Lewis, Brantley Gilbert, Hunter HayesThe Artists

While there is a slew of artists performing this year, we’ve narrowed down who we look forward to seeing this year.

The FARM  is a trio from different parts of the United States.  They have a Little Big Town Feel and are opening for Big & Rich.  Their debut album, Home Sweet Home hits the stores July 17th. Check them out here.

Big & Rich of course made our list! How can we not “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy?”  It was fantastic to see the always energetic Big Kenny in 2010 and now has cohort and Celebrity Apprentice winner, John Rich, is back on stage with him for Country Thunder.

The Roys are back at Country Thunder again and kick off Friday’s festivities on the main stage with their Bluegrass Country sound.

Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean’s tour stops  at Country Thunder and will surely entertain.   This is also the return of Jason and Luke on the main stage at Country Thunder. Anyone remember their 2010 performances?

Staind’s frontman, Aaron Lewis, recently released his first country album and is now showing country fans he can also be a country boy.  This sounds like Darius Rucker’s story…rocker turn country boy, but Rucker has proven himself, but can Aaron?

Easton Corbin is also returning to the Country Thunder main stage with country icon Dwight Yoakam, and headliner Blake Shelton. Blake is experiencing great notoriety with his place on The Voice, and for me, he has bigger shoes to fill as his wife, Miranda Lambert, graced the stage 2 years ago and took some time to grab a four wheeler and have some fun with fans in the mud filled campgrounds, so what will Blake do to top that?

Country newcomer, Hunter Hayes, is on the bill with country veteran, Neal McCoy.  It also won’t be long  that Brantley Gilbert will be “just the opener” and headlining his own tour soon.  He was recently headlining the Harley Davidson Roadhouse stage at Summerfest in Milwaukee to a packed crowd.  Toby Keith  brings his Red Solo Cup of fun as the closing headliner of Country Thunder in Twin Lakes.

Miranda Lambert’s “On Fire” Tour burns up Milwaukee

Miranda Lambert
The Bradley Center – Milwaukee, WI

Miranda Lambert On Fire 2012 Tour

The past year has been good to Miranda. From marrying fellow country singer and The Voice judge, Blake Shelton last May, and performing “America the Beautiful” at the XLVI Superbowl she has every reason to be loving life.  Not to mention she is also taking part in Brad Paisley’s Virtual Reality Tour on June 6 at the historic Wrigley Field in the middle of her extensive tour along with the Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California.

Miranda Lambert On Fire 2012 TourMiranda’s 5th studio release is titled Four the Record and was released off Sony Music Nashville.  The album, co-written by Miranda, includes songs penned by Brandi Carlile, one of her Pistol Annie band members, Ashley Monroe, and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley.   Guest performances include Josh Kelley, Steve Winwood, and Blake Shelton. Her release of Four the Record broke a 47-year record by making Miranda the first country music artist to have each of her releases debut at the #1 spot on the charts.  It also needs mention that Four the Record was also certified Gold.

Miranda is currently out on her On Fire tour with support from Chris Young and Jerrod Niemann. The tour kicked off mid January with back-to-back sold-out performances in Rockford, Illinois and La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Last night the tour stopped at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee and it was easy to see what the sold out shows where all about. While Miranda’s show was nothing less than pure entertainment for all in attendance, make no mistake, this ones for the ladies in the crowd. With the tone set by a video intro of strong women throughout history, if you were a guy coming to Miranda’s world to look for dainty ladies,,,,wrong night fella. Miranda’s , On Fire tour is a must see with great songs, great performances, and well done production. If you see shes coming to your town, you better get your tickets fast as this is sure to be one of the must see concerts of the season.

Scott Ian Joins The Nerdist’s Programming with “Fangoria’s Blood & Guts with Scott Ian”

Scott ian zombieI am a bit of a nerd so when I heard that there was a YouTube channel for nerdist I got this warm fuzzy feeling inside.  I should also mention that am I a HUGE horror fan, so it only got better as the Nerdist announced today that they are joining forces with Fangoria to take viewers inside the world of special effects make-up.  This new series, FANGORIA’S BLOOD & GUTS WITH SCOTT IAN, will focus on Hollywood FX make-up and show viewers how to “do it yourself.” The host for the program is none other than Anthrax’s shredder Scott Ian, who is no newbie to blood, guts, and gore.  Scott states, “I’ve been neck-deep in blood and guts for the last 30 years playing in Anthrax. So I couldn’t be more excited to be hosting a show called ‘Blood & Guts’ for you horror and metal fans.” Check out the full interview with Scott Ian on nerdist.com.

The Nerdist Channel launched back in April of 2012 covering all things nerd including comic books, video games, movies, and pop culture.  The channel has already pulled other big names such as, Neil Patrick Harris, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rob Zombie, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Harry Knowles and the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick.

Creed Kicks Off The “2 Nights Live” Tour in Chicago

2 Nights Live 2012
The Chicago Theatre – Chicago, IL

Creed is:
Scott Stapp – lead vocals
Mark Tremonti – lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals
Brian Marshall – bass
Scott Phillips – drums

Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti 2nd night at the Chicago Theatre

Creed doesn’t have a new album out yet, but that hasn’t stopped them from hitting the road. Scott Stapp, Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips decided to get back together to tour earlier this year. This reunion is the second go-around since their 2004 separation. The last time was back in 2009 with their 4th studio album, Full Circle, which was accompanied by a tour that ran into 2010.  Both parties have kept busy during Creed’s downtime as Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips formed Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy and as Alter Bridge released their first album, One Day Remains, back in 2004. Stapp released his first solo album, The Great Divide, in 2005. He also recorded a second solo album, but it appears to be currently shelved as Scott and Mark have been writing new material for Creed.

Scott Stapp at the Chicago Theatre for Creed's 2 Nights Live Tour

Last night was night two of Creed’s kick off to their 2 Nights Live tour.  The tour continues through late August at the Alaska State Fair and includes a stop for the rock fest, Rocklahoma.  The festival and fair stops will be anybody’s guess as to what they will play, but the first night at the Chicago Theatre on Friday covered the entire My Own Prison album plus a few other goodies from Human Clay and Weathered.  Night two featured Human Clay from beginning to end with some of their biggest hits from My Own Prison including “One,” “My Own Prison,” and “Torn” and they capped off the night with “My Sacrifice.”  The set was a huge flashback to 1999, which included Scott growing his trademark hair back.

Creed Chicago TheatreThe stage had amazing back lighting that was appropriate for a rock band making a comeback, yet neither Scott nor Mark really talked much between songs.  Actually, Mark didn’t say anything at all and Scott only introduced a couple of the songs.   This wasn’t so much a bad thing; I was expecting more of a VH1 Storytellers’ vibe but it was still entertaining to see them play the album straight through. For “Say I” Scott said, “This was the inspiration to the album’s name. It took us away to another place.”  He also remarked right before “Wash Away the Years” that his sister inspired the song.  The entire night was semi-surreal.  With eyes closed it really felt like someone hit play on jukebox as Scott nailed each of the songs. He didn’t stray too much from the original lyrics or arrangements.

Even though the band hails from Florida, Chicago has accepted both Creed and Alter Bridge alike as one of their own.  Magic happens when Tremonti and the crew come to town, yet there was a bit of doubt as to the success of this two night residency. Scott’s history in Chicago has been a shaky one that included fans demanding refunds due to his less than tolerable behavior on stage.  Last night Scott proved himself to be as strong as ever and the crowd opened their arms to Creed, showing that everything that happened in the past is all just water under the Alter Bridge. Hopefully Creed fans will soon see a new studio album with original songs from the original band members!

Human Clay Setlist:

Are you Ready?
What If
Say I
Wrong Way
Faceless Man
Never Die
With Arms Wide Open
Wash Away Those Years
Inside Us All
My Own Prison
My Sacrifice

Shinedown Roars Like a Lion on the Avalanche Tour

Avalanche Tour with Art of Dying and Adelitas Way

Brent Smith Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012

Shinedown could very well go down in history as having one of the greatest frontmen in rock and roll.  The band also has that special sauce with a bite to make them stand out in a world saturated by musicians. Each one of their four studio albums placed on rock charts and not many rock acts can say that.  Collectively their albums have already sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

zach myers Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012The group just released their fourth studio album, Amaryllis, and it has already spawned the radio rock anthem “Bully.”  Alongside Amaryllis’ release accompanied an eBook FOR YOUR SAKE: Inside the Making of Shinedown’s Amaryllis. It is an interactive book with 75 pages of words, never-before-seen photos, and videos. The eBook was a joint effort with rock journalist Jonah Bayer and Atlantic Records. The eBook is available for purchase here for $5.99.

Last night as Shinedown took the stage the first thing that struck me was Brent’s appearance.  Last time I saw Shinedown was back in 2010 and Brent looked like he filled out (it happens to the best of us).  Yet, when he walked out onstage last night, my mouth dropped. He looked fantastic! His weight loss didn’t just affect his physique; his energy level was at an all-time high. Brent was intense and much more dramatic than he was two years ago. Now let’s get something straight here–back in 2010 I thought the show was amazing; this time around I was just blown away.

Brent and Zach mix to make up that special sauce I was talking about earlier. Their comradery onstage shows the love between the guys.  Zach took to his solos with such ease as not to skip a beat. As many Shinedown fans know, Zach takes to his solo work when Shinedown is in hiatus mode, so he manages to keep his chops up to par.

I do need to mention the spectacular lighting for Shinedown. I really didn’t think the stage was going to be so lit up as it was even though this is Shinedown we are talking about.  The lighting was so poor for the openers Art of Dying and Adelitas Way that there was some concern of what it was going to look like when the headliners hit the stage.  All the light was aimed at the back of the stage by the drummer yet both openers took the very front of the stage with little light.

Brent Smith Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012

The set was a great mix of songs from each of their 4 albums and the night ended with some of their biggest hits to date including “Second Chance,” “Simple Man,” and “Bully.”

Sound of Madness
Diamond Eyes
If You Only Knew
Save Me
Nowhere Kids
Crow and Butterfly
Simple Man
Second Chance
Fly From the Inside

The Avalanche Tour runs through the end of April with May filled with headlining shows and festivals such as the Carolina Rebellion. See their tour itinerary below.

Adelitas Way The Rave Milwaukee Avalanche Tour

Adelitas Way is currently on tour supporting Shinedown on the Avalanche Tour.  With their new album, Home School Valedictorian, in hand they are set to take on the Avalanche Tour as well hitting some of the top rock festivals this summer.

These Las Vegas rockers have come a long way from playing local Las Vegas clubs.  They have opened for such stellar acts like Shinedown and Theory of a Deadman since 2005.  I was first introduced to the band back in 2007 as they snagged the lucky opening spot for one of Hinder’s shows at the House of Blues in Las Vegas.  It was only a matter of time before they were going to hit it big.
