Halestorm - 2012 tour

2012 may have been the year of Halestorm, as their headline tour pulled into a sold-out Majestic Theatre in Madison, Wisc. on Dec. 5. Their sophomore release, “The Strange Case of…,” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Hard Rock Albums” chart earlier this year, while its first single “Love Bites (So Do I)” followed suit atop the Active Rock airplay ranking. By mid-set, Halestorm would add their first Grammy nomination for best metal song, “Love Bites,” to a long list of highlights.

The animated Metalocalypse series is slowly transforming into real-life scenario. Though Dethklok haven’t quite attained a billion fans as depicted in the series, the Thursday night crowd at The Rave suggested their cult following were out in full-force. Joining them were All That Remains and The Black Dahlia Murder. It was a major disappointment that Machine Head had to pull off the tour a few days ago, due to an emergency hernia surgery for vocalist Robb Flynn.

Jack White - 2012 Virgin Mobile Free Fest

The 2012 Virgin Mobile FreeFest took place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. Roughly 30,000 tickets were “freed-out” within minutes of availability. At least that many packed into the Pavilion grounds, under sunny skies, to catch artists that varied from Alabama Shakes to ZZ Top, while Jack White and Skrillex headlined the two main stages. A third stage was also positioned up the hill to provide a “Dance Forest” with DJs mixing original beats throughout the festival.

Business mogul and Virgin Group CEO Richard Branson created FreeFest as a way to give back to the community while drawing attention to youth homelessness. The music festival sponsors The RE*Generation, an organization to assist homeless youth, via donations and awareness.

The Fest is also about the music and having a good time, and there was no shortage of either on Saturday. The music flowed non-stop from noon until just shy of 11 p.m. Most artists were afforded at least a full hour for their setlist, nearly double what most festivals allow outside of the headliners.

Lzzy Hale of Halestorm

Lzzy Hale of Halestorm

Halestorm is having a fantastic year and one of their big breaks came in the most unlikely places….Glee.  While Glee is one of those shows that it’s either loved or hated, one can’t deny the fact that having a song or an entire album featured on the show means being exposed to millions that may not have heard the music before.  Around the time of Glee Halestorm also released the EP Hello, It’s MZ. Hyde and then soon after the full album, The Strange Case Of …, which rose to the top of the charts and I personally can’t think of another band who deserves it more.

It has been awhile since I’ve seen Halestorm live; it was back in 2010 on the Uproar Tour. I actually ran into Lzzy backstage while interviewing New Medicine and she couldn’t have been more kind and welcoming.  Back in 2010 they were the openers on the main stage and today are headlining their own shows and are currently second on the bill of the Carnival of Madness Tour right under Evanescence. After the Carnival of Madness Tour wraps up in the US, the band is headed to Europe through the fall.

Evanescence was back at the Rave last night in Milwaukee. It felt like Amy Lee and the band were just there a couple months ago, when in actuality it’s almost been a year. The band took Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen’s group, The Pretty Reckless, on tour as an opening act. This fall Evanescence hit the road with Halestorm, Chevelle, Cavo, and New Medicine on the Carnival of Madness Tour.

Ever since the band announced the release of their third studio album, the band has been on the road and hit some of the major rock festivals this summer. The band even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway in January. Last night Evanescene returned to the Rave before they embark on their UK leg of the current tour.

The Flaming Lips show began as though a traveling carnival and junior high school prom had just collided upon the stage. A massive disco ball swung gently in the wind above Coyne, while a number of pre-selected fans dressed as The Wizard of Oz characters danced at the extreme edges. Smoke drifted from the stage, and the crowd. Confetti, streamers and a smoking megaphone all appeared within the first five minutes of the show.

Garbage - 2012 Pondamonium

Garbage walked away from music over seven years ago, smack dab in the middle of their 2005 tour. Road burn-out coupled with a loathing of their record label simply pushed them over the edge. A creative rumbling brought them back together in late 2010 for a self-produced, independent effort. The result was the same Garbage feel with a modernized, electronic vibe called “Not Your Kind of People” that was released in May 2012. Needless to say, their true-to-the-core Madison fan-base were more than ready for Garbage to hit the stage at Pondamonium.

Black Stone Cherry bring their soulful sound to the Main Stage at WIIL ROCK FEST

Black Stone Cherry bring their soulful sound to the Main Stage at WIIL ROCK FEST

Black Stone Cherry
WIIL ROCK FEST
Shadow Hill Ranch
Twin Lakes, WI
8/11/2012

Their energy and stage presence along with frontman Chris Robertson’s soulful and powerful vocals makes Black Stone Cherry one of the Midwest’s favorite rock bands for good reason.  It was just a year ago Black Stone Cherry graced the stage of the Carnival of Madness tour that landed at Shadow Hill Ranch in Twin Lakes.  This year they return to the main stage to assist in the celebration of 95.1 WIIL Rock’s 20th Anniversary of rocking Illinois and Wisconsin.

Black Stone Cherry is out promoting their most recent release, Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea. The album has spawned their moving single “In My Blood.”  The song peaked at #12 at Active Rock and #4 at Mainstream Rock radio. Watch the official video below. Picking up where “In My Blood” left off, the bands new single, “Like I Roll” is yet another well written song and makes you want to drive with your radio cranked to 11.  There are not a lot of things that are more disappointing than hearing a bands songs and being excited to see them live, only to be let down, knowing the best member of their band was the studio they had months to polish their CD in. I can say with 100% faith, Black Stone Cherry is not that type of band. They are a truly talented group of guys, with one of the most under rated singers of our generation. Its few and far between that you will find such a soulful, powerful singer who also takes part in actually writing the songs they sing.  Black Stone Cherry not only had the crowd rockin at WIIL’S Rock Fest, but the other bands in attendance stood to watch their show, a testament to the strength of their musicianship and songs. Check out Black Stone Cherry’s show when it comes to a City near you, because whatever the ticket price is, it’s more than worth it.

Anthrax - 2012 Mayhem Festival

The 2012 incarnation of Mayhem Festival is currently making the rounds, and it pulled into Tinley Park’s First Midwest Bank Amphitheater on July 21. Midsummer temperatures and a heavy lineup were certain to wilt all but the true diehards, as over 10 hours of music and over a dozen bands were awaiting those who arrived when the gates opened at 12:30 p.m. The Devil Wears Prada, Anthrax were set to crush the Jagermeister stage, while As I Lay Dying, Motorhead, Slayer and Slipknot would handle this year’s main stage.

Shinedown - Rock USA

The second annual Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh, Wisc. got off to a fantastic start on Thursday, July 12, 2012. Considering the inaugural event was kicked off with headliners Daughtry, Journey and KISS last year, this year’s festival had some big shoes to fill. Shinedown, Motley Crue and Kid Rock looked to take Rock USA to higher grounds over the next three days. Given the sell-out of VIP seats in record time, one can conclude that Rock USA is moving in the right direction. Papa Roach and Skillet complemented Shinedown’s opening day lineup, and all three bands came in ready to rock.

The B-52s - 2012 Summerfest

Sunday, July 8 marked the final day of 2012 Summerfest. This years music festival in Milwaukee was deemed a success despite a monstrous midwestern heatwave. The B-52s headlined the BMO Harris Bank Pavilion and played a solid set despite a sparse crowd. In their defense, they were performing head-to-head against Squeeze, Bush, Sublime with Rome, La India and Tito Rojas, Hanson and Halestorm; while Neil Diamond also had a strong showing at the Marcus Amphitheater.

Chevelle - 2012 Summerfest

Whether it was marketing strategy, or simply an alignment of the stars, Summerfest put together their strongest lineup for the final Saturday of the festival. The various ground stage headliners on July 7, 2012 were Hollywood Undead, Cake, Chevelle, Common and Phil Vassar; while Anthony Hamilton performed at the BMO Harris Pavilion. For those that needed a little more, Aerosmith and Cheap Trick were booked for the Marcus Amphitheater. The weather also started to cool off, making for a rather nice evening.
