Chicago Ultimate Tumblers (CUT) Blew My Mind at Kidzapalooza

Chicago Ultimate Tumblers Lollapalooza 2012 6

Words can’t even describe how amazed I was by the Chicago Ultimate Tumblers. They awed everyone in Kidzapalooza with their ultimate acrobatic moves! Tumblers jumped off of trampolines leaping over other members of the group and volunteers from the crowd. Some tumblers soared over 17 people! It is definitely a sight to see. I suggest catching them anytime you can! President Orpheus R Floyd says the goal of the CUT is to provide positive after school activity and to focus on mentoring, tutoring and self esteem building. The CUT doesn’t only compete in city-wide competitions; they were also on Season 6 of “America’s Got Talent” and have performed at the White House.

You can follow The CUT on their myspace here . To be awed yourself check out some of their videos here

Do312 Celebrity Kickball 2012

Do312 Celebrity Kickball Game

Do312 Celebrity Kickball Game

It was a controversial game this year! Teams fought over who the real winners were and will be reviewing the tape for bragging rights! It was a close game though, whether it was a tie or really was 7-6 I can’t say. What I can say is it was a great game!

This was Do312’s 3rd year running their Celebrity Kickball game at Lolla. The line-up was amazing! Many celebrity kickballer’s came back to dual over this year’s trophy from Fender made from a real guitar. Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Har Mar Superstar and Greg Corner of Kill Hannah came back for a 3 peat. A couple of my favorite newbie’s who came out to play were Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Kaylee Defer from Gossip Girl.

Guy was hilarious on the field. Dying to make his way home he yelled “We’re green, we’re mean! Some of us are lean….” It was awesome. He even took over one of the JBTV’s cameras to get a live perspective of the game. He carried it while up at bat and ran around getting shots of the crowd.

This year was the first time fest goers could actually watch the game. It was great to see Lolla fans talk and take pictures with the celebrities. Aaron Paul got to sign an old (not that old) High School year book for a fellow classmate.

Coping with the Heat at Lollapalooza

xrt misting tentLollapalooza started yesterday to a packed crowd and high heat and full sun.  To say it’s hot outside is an understatement.  When patrons pay big money to spend 3 days out in the heat enjoying their favorite artists there has to be a way to cool down.

Having Lollapalooza in Grant Park makes a great location for a festival with great views such as Lake Michigan and Buckingham Fountain, but one drawback is all the concrete that collects all the rays of the sun and lack of trees to escape from it.  Need to find shade? Here’s where to find it and places to avoid.

The Red Bull Soundstage and stages on the north end of the park were good for keeping down the heat due to the fact there was grass and not concrete. It made all the difference especially as the midday and early afternoon hit.

The BMI stage is the best to escape the sun! The stage is nuzzled between a set of trees where many people came to cool down and may not have even known the artist.

The worst stage to be in for the heat was the Playstation stage in the afternoon.  Yesterday during Die Antwoord’s set, there was a handful of us that walked away to find shade as balls of sweat were rolling off our head and back.  It wasn’t pretty.  The good part was, even when finding shade, we could still hear Die Antwoord’s set.

cta cooling bus lollapalooza

The CTA supplies buses around the park for cooling stations.  Yesterday those buses were packed!  Chicago radio station, WRT supplied a misting station for people to stand in or run through.

Forget sun block? No problem! American Family Insurance was around to give out sun block, ear plugs, and hand sanitizer.

Headed downtown today? Don’t forget to dress cool, but sandals are a no-no! Against the steamy concrete, the flip flops will burn your feet!

The Lollapalooza Lowdown!

coldplay lollapaloozaLollapalooza starts tomorrow and we have the lowdown!

2012 tickets sold out in records time, 71 days prior to the event, but those who didn’t score the coveted tickets can stream the show at http://youtube.com/lollapalooza. Live streams and interviews will be available for Jack White, AVICII, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Ocean, The Shins, Florence + The Machine, and more.

Something cool this year is the stand-alone LollaShop.  The Shop is open to the public through August 6th and has Lollapalooza merchandise and merch from Sony, Goorlin Bros. Hats, Baggu plus many more.  The LollaShop is located Thompson Hotel and the Lounge will host events and artist appearances, and yoga.  Make sure to reserve a spot by RSVPing at http://do312.com/lollashop.

When there is just too much to carry, State Farm is providing a bag check. This is free and located west of Buckingham Fountain.

Lolla + Instagram + Free WIFI

This year Lollapalooza is having bands and fans Instagram photos showing up on the jumbotron around the stages.  Remember to tag all Lollapalooza photos this weekend in Instagram with #lolla.  Don’t use Instagram? iPhone and Android photos also show up in the Lollapalooza mobile app that is available for free on Google Play and iTunes.

To assist in uploading all those Instagram photos, Lolla is providing FREE WIFI around the park.  There will be hotspots near Buckingham Fountain, Lederhosen’s Biergarten, Uncorked Win Lounge, all Lolla Lounges, and more.  The network to select is “2012 Lolla.”

What’s Allowed and Not Allowed in the Park

Since it’s been hot around Chicago and the Midwest, festivals such and Summerfest and now Lollapalooza are allowing patrons to bring in 2 SEALED bottles into the festival.  Also allowed is an empty, refillable bottle.  There will be commemorative CamelBak water bottles and packs at merch booths.  The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic containers in the park with partners Boxed Water and Vita Coco Coconut Water.

Along with the sealed bottles the following items are ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Blankets, Sheets, Towels

Umbrellas (ONLY Hand-Held)

Soft-Sided Coolers

Baby Strollers

Binoculars

Non-Professional Recording Equipment (Point & Shoot Cameras, Flip Video Cameras, etc.)

The following items are NOT ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Weapons of Any Kind, including Fireworks or Explosives of Any Kind

Illegal or Illicit Substances of Any Kind

Skateboards, Scooters or Personal Motorized Vehicles

Bicycles Inside Festival Grounds (Plenty Bike Racks are available near The Box Office).

Carts, Tents & Chairs of Any Kind

Hard-Sided Coolers

Pets (except Service Dogs)

Professional Recording (Photo, Video, Audio) Equipment (NO Detachable Zoom Lense, Tripods or Other Commerical Equipment

No Unauthorized/Unlicensed Vendors Allowed. No Unauthorized Solicitations, Handbills, Sampling, Give-Aways, etc.

The FOOD

For the newcomers to Lolla the food is plentiful and diverse.  Chef Graham Elliot returned as the Culinary Ambassador to oversee the food is top notch.

Not everyone eats meat and besides having some great choices from food vendors, there is also the return of the Farmers Market. The Farmers Market will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free patrons.

Activities

Lollapalooza started with showcasing music, but today Lollapalooza has much more to experience than just music.

Green Workshops

In conjunction with the Farmers Market, there will be brief urban gardening workshops provided by Compass Green. These workshops support education in low-income schools.  These workshops are at the south end of Green Street each day of Lolla at 1p.m.

Kidzapalooza

For those who are bringing the kids along there is Kidzapalooza.  Kids 10 and under enter the festival within Lolla for free.  It has its own stage and interactive games from Rock Star Video Karaoke to hip-hop workshops with the Q Brothers. Face painting is also taken to a whole other level as kids are transformed into rock stars and get a photo shoot all glammed up.

Do312 Celebrity Kickball

For the 3rd year running, DO312 put together a stellar line-up for the game that takes place Saturday morning at 11:15a.m.  at the north end of the festival by the Red Bull Soundstage.  This year’s celebrities include Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Chef Guy Fieri, Ryan Cabrera, Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, Chris Holmes, Greg Corner, Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Paradise, Dave Ziebarth, Kaylee DeFer from Gossip Girl.

Do312’s Celebrity Kickball Game at Lollapalooza This Saturday!

Date: Saturday, July 4, 2012
Time:11:15 a.m.
Place: Grant Park/Lollapalooza Grounds
Who:  Many celebrities

do312 celebrity kickball game

For the past 2 years the Celebrity Kickball game at Lollapalooza has been quite entertaining.  Most observers that arrived at Lolla early on Saturday ran into the game in full kick-ass mode.  Some walked right past as the likes of Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) and Aaron Paul (Prison Break) showed the crowd their kickball skills, or maybe lack of. This year Aaron Paul is back and will be joined by Chris Holmes, Greg Corner, Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Paradise, Dave Ziebarth, Kaylee from Gossip Girl and more!

So where do you find the kickball game? The game starts at 11:15 a.m. and last year it took place in front of the North side stage, which would be The Red Bull Soundstage this year.

FYI this year the game is presented by Groupon and Fender donated a trophy for the winning team!

Slayer - 2012 Mayhem Festival

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival has been the premier traveling heavy metal music event since its inception in 2008. This years lineup placed Anthrax, The Devil Wears Prada and Asking Alexandria on the secondary stage; while Slipknot, Slayer, Motorhead and As I Lay Dying were on the featured stage. The tour rolled into the First Midwest Bank Amphitheater, outside Chicago, on July 21, 2012.

Anthrax - 2012 Mayhem Festival

The 2012 incarnation of Mayhem Festival is currently making the rounds, and it pulled into Tinley Park’s First Midwest Bank Amphitheater on July 21. Midsummer temperatures and a heavy lineup were certain to wilt all but the true diehards, as over 10 hours of music and over a dozen bands were awaiting those who arrived when the gates opened at 12:30 p.m. The Devil Wears Prada, Anthrax were set to crush the Jagermeister stage, while As I Lay Dying, Motorhead, Slayer and Slipknot would handle this year’s main stage.

Motley Crue - 2012 Rock USA

In its second year, the 2012 Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh, Wisc. featured a solid three-day lineup that included Shinedown, Motley Crue and Kid Rock as headliners for July 12-14, respectively. The second day performances by Drowning Pool, Hinder, Tesla and Motley Crue had a tough act to follow, considering the incredible first day performance by Shinedown.

Shinedown - Rock USA

The second annual Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh, Wisc. got off to a fantastic start on Thursday, July 12, 2012. Considering the inaugural event was kicked off with headliners Daughtry, Journey and KISS last year, this year’s festival had some big shoes to fill. Shinedown, Motley Crue and Kid Rock looked to take Rock USA to higher grounds over the next three days. Given the sell-out of VIP seats in record time, one can conclude that Rock USA is moving in the right direction. Papa Roach and Skillet complemented Shinedown’s opening day lineup, and all three bands came in ready to rock.

Cage the Elephant’s “Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival” September 28 & 29, 2012

Cage the Elephant Hangout Music FestivalI see the new trend in live music is just to start your own music festival if you have a recognizable name in the industry.  Ozzy has been doing it for years (Ozzfest), Dave Matthews attempted it last year (Dave Matthews Band Caravan), and Metallica just started theirs this year (Orion Music + More Festival).  While this is news to me, Cage the Elephant’s Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival is in it’s second year running.  The band made great strides in Kentucky, and for that, the band created the Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival and this year it takes place September 28 & 29, 2012 just outside of Bowling Green, KY at Ballance Farms.

Tickets are $45 including fees and camping. Tickets will go on-sale on July 20th at 10:00 AM Eastern at www.starrynightsfestival.com

Country Thunder: The Line-up, The Stages, and The Schedule

Country Thunder 2012 Twin Lakes Easton Corbin, Big Kenny, Jason AldeanCountry Thunder in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, is just under a week away and marks the midway point of the summer festival season. For the Twin Lakes Country Thunder, there are always a couple things you can count on while attending the 4 day country fest.  First is the heat, which has been lingering in the Midwest for the past 15 days or so. Second is the rain; as it always rains at least one day over the 4 days and creates mud puddles in the campgrounds, but no one seems to mind.  The third is the fantastic music Country Thunder draws to the Midwest.  This year could be the best line-up to date as Big & Rich, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, and Toby Keith headline.  Yet, the only thing that may not happen this year is the rain, but maybe Country Thunder will be what draws the much needed rain to the Midwest.

Just issued By Country Thunder and the Order of the Kenosha County Parks Dept. :

Currently the County of Kenosha is under dangerous fire conditions therefore as of yet:
OPEN FIRES ARE BANNED
No campfires, grilling with charcoal or wood,
Fireworks or careless use of smoking materials at country thunder is strictly prohibited.
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The Stages

Last year was the first year the second stage, the Frat House, was added during the day and included performers such as Steal Magnolia and Jason Jones.  The stage was a saving grace as the previous artists mentioned were scheduled to perform on the main stage, but the rain forced them to play on the Frat Stage under the tent.  This year two new stages have been added, minus the Frat House Stage; the GAC Country Thunder Stage and The Electric Thunder stage – schedules for both stage are below. These stages are host to the up-and-comers in country music and a DJ throughout the night until 2 A.M.

What You Can and Cannot Bring – Direct from Country Thunder’s site

No: Instruments; Knives/Weapons; Chains/Chain Wallets; Outside Food or Beverage (into venue); Camelpacks; Tents in venue; Flags in venue; Refunds or Exchanges; Video Cameras; Audio Recording Devices; Flasks; Professional Cameras; Pets (in concert bowl); Drugs or Drug Paraphernalia; Coolers in venue; Laser Pointers; Excess Baggage; Umbrellas; or Chairs with Canopies.

OK: Backpacks (medium); Hats; Sun Block; Lighters; Sunglasses; Beach Towel; One Unopened Bottle of Water; 12 & Under Free (except in RSVD or VIP area); Fanny Packs; Digital Cameras (non professional); Disposable Cameras; Film Cameras (non professional)

Country Thunder Twin Lakes Aaron Lewis, Brantley Gilbert, Hunter HayesThe Artists

While there is a slew of artists performing this year, we’ve narrowed down who we look forward to seeing this year.

Thursday

The FARM  is a trio from different parts of the United States.  They have a Little Big Town Feel and are opening for Big & Rich.  Their debut album, Home Sweet Home hits the stores July 17th. Check them out here.

Big & Rich of course made our list! How can we not “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy?”  It was fantastic to see the always energetic Big Kenny in 2010 and now has cohort and Celebrity Apprentice winner, John Rich, is back on stage with him for Country Thunder.

Friday

The Roys are back at Country Thunder again and kick off Friday’s festivities on the main stage with their Bluegrass Country sound.

Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean’s tour stops  at Country Thunder and will surely entertain.   This is also the return of Jason and Luke on the main stage at Country Thunder. Anyone remember their 2010 performances?

Saturday

Staind’s frontman, Aaron Lewis, recently released his first country album and is now showing country fans he can also be a country boy.  This sounds like Darius Rucker’s story…rocker turn country boy, but Rucker has proven himself, but can Aaron?

Easton Corbin is also returning to the Country Thunder main stage with country icon Dwight Yoakam, and headliner Blake Shelton. Blake is experiencing great notoriety with his place on The Voice, and for me, he has bigger shoes to fill as his wife, Miranda Lambert, graced the stage 2 years ago and took some time to grab a four wheeler and have some fun with fans in the mud filled campgrounds, so what will Blake do to top that?

Sunday

Country newcomer, Hunter Hayes, is on the bill with country veteran, Neal McCoy.  It also won’t be long  that Brantley Gilbert will be “just the opener” and headlining his own tour soon.  He was recently headlining the Harley Davidson Roadhouse stage at Summerfest in Milwaukee to a packed crowd.  Toby Keith  brings his Red Solo Cup of fun as the closing headliner of Country Thunder in Twin Lakes.

Bush - 2012 Summerfest

“The Big Gig,” Milwaukee’s 2012 Summerfest music festival, ended it’s 11-day run on Sunday, July 8. Hundreds of bands had performed across nine stages, while weather varied from temperate to frightfully warm during that period. The festival concluded with Neil Diamond performing at the Marcus Amphitheater and The B-52s at the BMO Harris Pavilion. Ground stage headliners were Sublime with Rome, Squeeze, La India and Tito Rojas, Hanson, Halestorm and Bush.

The B-52s - 2012 Summerfest

Sunday, July 8 marked the final day of 2012 Summerfest. This years music festival in Milwaukee was deemed a success despite a monstrous midwestern heatwave. The B-52s headlined the BMO Harris Bank Pavilion and played a solid set despite a sparse crowd. In their defense, they were performing head-to-head against Squeeze, Bush, Sublime with Rome, La India and Tito Rojas, Hanson and Halestorm; while Neil Diamond also had a strong showing at the Marcus Amphitheater.

Chevelle - 2012 Summerfest

Whether it was marketing strategy, or simply an alignment of the stars, Summerfest put together their strongest lineup for the final Saturday of the festival. The various ground stage headliners on July 7, 2012 were Hollywood Undead, Cake, Chevelle, Common and Phil Vassar; while Anthony Hamilton performed at the BMO Harris Pavilion. For those that needed a little more, Aerosmith and Cheap Trick were booked for the Marcus Amphitheater. The weather also started to cool off, making for a rather nice evening.

311 - 2012 Summerfest

Milwaukee was treated to a bevy of talent for Summerfest’s Fourth of July festivities. It was delivered with a bit of irony in that our independence from Great Britain was celebrated with a handful of musical acts from the United Kingdom. Iron Maiden, David Gray and The Joy Formidable headlined alongside 311, Ziggy Marley and The BoDeans.

However it was Fun., one of the breakout artists from 2011, that appeared to have drawn the largest crowd on the general admission ground’s stages. Rascal Flatts at Summerfest 2012

Rascal Flatts brought their “Changed” tour to Milwaukee on June 27th and opened the first day of Summerfest in a rocken style. With a catalog of hits that could keep a crowed going on its own, Rascal Flatts brought along one of the most eye pleasing lighting shows I have seen in years. Between the good music, professional light show and great weather you couldn’t help but have a good time. Not even an average at best audio mix wasn’t able to dampen the energy the guys brought to their performance. Link to the bands site bellow for more information and go see Rascal Flatts when they come through your town. In a time when money is tight, its nice to have a sure bet of a good time.

2012 Rocklahoma sizzles with talent

Rocklahoma
Pryor, OK
5/24-26/2012

All photos by Dan DeSlover – Concert Capture

Music fans from across the U.S. converged upon the small town of Pryor, Oklahoma for the annual Rocklahoma music festival on Memorial Day weekend. The three-day event took place Friday through Sunday, May 25-27, and included its best lineup to date.  Prior incarnations relied on 80s hair-metal bands, whereas the 2012 bill featured artists that varied from old-school bands such as Queensryche and Megadeth to Southern rockers Jackyl and Black Stone Cherry to Christian artists P.O.D. and RedCreed, Rob Zombie and Chickenfoot were featured as Main stage headliners over the three respective days.

Major artists were spread over two adjacent stages, Main and Hard Rock, such that music alternated virtually non-stop from 4:00 p.m. until well past midnight every night. A pair of smaller stages, Retrospect Records and Axis Campground, provided additional performances from smaller local and independent bands. VIP tickets offered reserved bench seating and standing room pit access for the Main stage, while the remainder of the festival grounds were grass-covered, general admission spaces open to all ticketed patrons.  Roughly 20,000 fans graced the wide open fields each day.

Adelitas Way returned to Rocklahoma and opened the Main stage on Friday with a full-throttled set that got the early crowd primed for a weekend of music.  They played at their typical frenzied pace despite a heat index over 90-degrees. Frontman Rick DeJesus got more people moving after he staid, “Fill this front up so I can jump off the f–king stage.”  They did and he kept his promise by crowd surfing after they closed their set with “Invincible”.  Cavo followed with a 45-minute set but lacked Adelitas’ enthusiasm despite an otherwise solid performance. Chevelle brought back the energy but suffered from sound problems near the front.  Vocalist Pete Loeffler was often drowned out from the bass that resonated from concrete slabs that defined the Main stage pit.

Friday’s highlights were appearances by Slash [show review], featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and Creed [show review] who each produced sets of the highest caliber.  The lineup was wrought with irony in that Myles Kennedy also performs with Alter Bridge (a.k.a. Creed sans Scott Stapp).  Mark Tremonti, guitarist for both bands, later tweeted, “Great to hang with Myles and Slash. This was the first time Scott and Myles had a chance to meet!”

Redlight King gave a standout performance on the Hard Rock stage on Friday. Canadian musician Mark Kasprzyk fronts the new band, having found previous success touring as Kazzer. Redlight King goes beyond the radio friendly rock hit, “Bullet in My Hand,” with the chill rap “Old Man” that’s influenced by Neil Young’s classic hit. Kaz had great stage presence, while his smooth rap and capable voice are a complete package.

Saturday’s lineup stepped it up a notch.  With Anti-Mortem and Trivium on the bill, fans were going get a taste of the hardcore.  The latter annihilated the Hard Rock stage, generating the largest most pit of the weekend. When it appeared as though Trivium had hit their stride, they closed their set with an explosive rendition of Metallica’s “Creeping Death.”

Main stage artists Pop Evil, 10 Years and Theory of a Deadman provided a more mainstream rock experience for those not wanting to mosh. Pop Evil put in a strong ten-song set with hits “Hero,” “100 in a 55,” “Boss’s Daughter” and “Last Man Standing.”

10 Years always play with an acute determination and Saturday was no different. Both vocalist Jesse Hasek and bassist Lew Cosby were shirtless by the end of their set in the blazing Oklahoma sunshine. They performed a couple songs from their forthcoming album, Minus the Machine.  Hasek joined the crowd to sing “Shoot It Out” amongst the fans, at least as far as his mic cord would take him.

The Darkness reunited recently and the English outfit turned out their trademark 80s-meets-90s hairmetal laced with Justin Hawkins uber-falsetto vocals. Hawkins appeared in his Evel Knieval-styled leather pants and strutted about with a smile that went ear-to-ear. For many it was a new experience but others were stoked to see The Darkness back together.

Megadeth and Rob Zombie closed out the Main stage with a vengeance, while Volbeat was sandwiched between on the Hard Rock stage. Megadeth’s technically challenging riffs have been a mainstay of their sound for the past three decades. Guitarist Chris Broderick is the perfect complement to Dave Mustaine’s over the top fretwork. Dave Ellefson returned to his rightful place on bass for the last album. They gave a headline-worthy show and primed the crowd for Zombie.

Volbeat took charge of the Hard Rock stage and lit up the crowd for 45-minutes.  The Danish rockers finally broke through to U.S. audiences with their latest Beyond Hell/Above Heaven. Their style can best be described as Social Distortion meets Slayer, with catchy hooks and uptempo transitions that pairs like fine cuisine. Their live show takes it to the next level and they impressed a huge crowd.

Rob Zombie’s music from the macabre capped the night in spectacular fashion. Lights, fire, smoke and a stage-show that showed the Hollywood side of Zombie was a feast for the senses. This was a set that was best seen from a distance, those sitting too close had to  constantly move their heads back and forth to keep up with Zombie’s frenetic pace.

Sunday saw Rocklahoma return to its roots,  leaning toward classic rock with some Southern rock thrown in for good measure.  Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry paired well with Jackyl. Both had the crowd begging for more.

Puddle of Mudd usually give an upbeat performance, frontman Wes Scantlin has been known to climb scaffolding during their show.  However,  Scantlin was anemic, barely moving beyond center stage during their 45-minute set. Despite his lethargic presence, his voice was sharp and they gave an otherwise solid set.

One of Sunday’s highlights was an early evening appearance by Aranda. They hail from Oklahoma and rewarded their local fans who made the trek to Pryor. Brothers Gabe and Demeon Aranda share vocal duties, each garnering a hit with rock radio with their current, independent release Stop the World.

Art of Dying have been moving up the rock food chain with heavy rotation on rock radio and an abundance of touring (2011 UPROAR, 2011 and 2012 Avalanche). Good music with matching personalities, Art of Dying are living a dream and show no signs of slowing down.

Sunday closed with Seattle rockers Queensryche leading into Chickenfoots headline set. Geoff Tate’s operatic vocals are the basis of their sound, but their intricate melodies punctuated by Scott Rockenfield’s incessant pounding on the kit are intricately tied to Queensryche’s unique style. Rather than opening with an upbeat track, they chose to start with the slower-paced “Get Started.” Tate’s vocals were completely lost to the music, showing up only briefly during the quieter “Silent Lucidity.” Tate was obviously flustered, shrugging to the crew at side-stage between songs. He was obviously belting it out but his voice just wasn’t projecting beyond his monitors.

Supergroup Chickenfoot had a huge fan presence.  Sammy Hagar (vocals), Joe Satriani (guitar) and Michael Anthony (bass) were joined by Kenny Aronoff on drums. Founding member Chad Smith is currently on tour with his Red Hot Chili Peppers, a valid reason to be excused. Hagar is known for his dynamic performances and that’s exactly what Rocklahoma received.  Satriani is a guitar legend and a treat to watch perform.  Hagar and Anthony have a chemistry that dates back to their time together in Van Halen.  Calling their live show rock solid would be an understatement. No need for fancy effects, Chickenfoot simply came out and put the the rock in Oklahoma.

Though Rocklahoma lowlights were far and few between, the primary issue that frequently occurred was sound quality from Main stage vocal performances. Given that some artists had pristine sound, our conclusion was speaker placement coupled with the concrete channel directly in front of the stage greatly affected vocal sound quality.  Chevelle, 10 Years, Megadeth and Queensryche were adversely affected, even prompting Queensryche vocalist Geoff Tate to comment how this year’s crowd “sucked” relative to their 2009 set.  Many in the front were calling out for the band to “turn up the mic” to no avail.

Several guitars, signed by an entire band, were auctioned for charity each day between the later sets on the Main stage.  Creed,  Slash, Chickenfoot, Rob Zombie and Motley Crue (from the previous year) fetched thousands of dollars apiece, ranging from over $4000 to $7000 apiece, with Slash pulling in the most money for the cause.  The final item for bid was a 2012 Rocklahoma tour poster that was signed by every band member that performed on the two large stages over the three days, generating another $5000 in donations.
