Jack White Hangout Music Festival Alabama 2012

Jack White headlined Day 1 of the Hangout Music Festival this weekend down in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The set was a mix of new material, Raconteurs, White Stripes, and even a Danger Mouse track.   Worth a quick note, Jack actually has two back up bands. One is a complete female band and the other is completely male.  He never lets them practice together and he also doesn’t let them know which one will be performing until the night of the show.

Chilly Gonzalez hosts the “Piano Talk Show” at Brooklyn’s Bell House

Though not many people may be familiar with Chilly Gonzalez, there is no doubt you’ve heard his work.  He is the Grammy-nominated producer behind Feist’s The Reminder, as well as her most recent album Metals.  His tune, “Never Stop,” became ubiquitous with the iPad commercials.

Born Jason Charles Beck, Gonzalez is a musical genius that transitions between melancholic piano virtuoso to playful comic lyricist.  This was beautifully displayed on Friday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn.  With accompaniment from the string section named Fuck Lucks, Gonzalez was part musical lecturer and hilarious host dressed in a satin robe and slippers.  First, there was a discussion about major and minor keys that stemmed from his use of the Flat E minor.   He compared the major keys to the right wing and the status quo, while the minor end coincidentally embraced by the minorities.  Gonzalez played well known tunes, such as “Happy Birthday” and “Frère Jacques” in minor keys to demonstrate the somber reversal of fortune in a simple change of scale.

From major and minor, Gonzalez shifted gears to the rap genre and how it taught him about ambition.  He sang “Beans” as a comic play on the ghetto fabulous lifestyle of excess.  Rapping sick lyrics like, “And when the beans talk, I hear the echo / Speaking to me in the voice of Mr. Gordon Gekko.” Gonzalez continued his musical education covering music counts from 4/4 to 6/8, identifying the latter count sequence as “kinda rapey”.  Throughout his musical lessons, he had members of the audience join him at his piano, playing side by side.

Given the choice of another long drawn out somber piano piece or a story on how he worked with Drake, the audience chose Drake.  Drake had sampled Gonzalez’s work in “Outro” for his So Far Gone Mixtape without giving Chilly his due.  Needless to say, Gonzalez wrote a reactionary song, “The Grudge” to cope with the episode, which he never shared with Drake.  But as fate would have it, the fellow Canadian had coincidentally bought a condo in the same building as Gonzalez’s father.  Drake’s people arranged a meeting for the two and a face to face collaboration was realized when they performed together at the 2011 Juno Awards.  No bad blood after all.

The show closed with Gonzalez atop the piano playing tunes with his feet, which somehow is not surprising from such a musical genius.  Chilly Gonzalez is releasing Solo Piano II later this year via Arts & Crafts.  Let the education continue.

It took roughly a decade, but Switchfoot fans finally saw their band perform live in Madison, WI on Wednesday night. Switchfoot are presently touring in support of their successful 2011 release, “Vice Verses.” The album debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart at #8 and the first single “Dark Horses” is one of their strongest tracks to date.

And you thought you had mommy issues! At least Courtney Love isn’t your mother!

While I’m generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn.  I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way.  I’m in a monogamous relationship and very happy.

Twitter should ban my mother.

Exitmusic – Passage

Release date: May 22, 2012
Secretly Canadian

Exitmusic, the husband and wife duo of Devon Church and Aleksa Palladino, produce a blend of chill wave meets  apocalyptic crescendo.  Though Aleksa has quite the day job playing Angela Darmody on Boardwalk Empire, she is no actress tinkering at a music side project.  Exitmusic is legit.  Last October they released their debut EP, From Silence, which included “The Modern Age” – the only track that graces their forthcoming full length album Passage.

The title track starts as a little sea foam on the shore and catapults into a crashing chorus.  Aleksa really digs into a guttural vocal delivery with “The Night” as sweet “ha ha ah’s” calm the backing music-scape.  “The City” starts with Aleksa’s numbing vocals then pounds in with drums and guitars, creating a push and pull effect.

Exitmusic is reminiscent of Beach House with a dash of Goldfrapp, but darker and more foreboding.  “The Wanting” is especially atmospheric with repetitive loops.  My favorite track “White Noise”  has Aleksa crooning in desperation as frenetic guitars seem to change her tune to an uplifting cheer.  The now defunct Los Angeles CityBeat described it prefectly as, “mak(ing) me think of two sweet kids strolling hand-in-hand into Armageddon.” Now that’s the perfect exit music.

Jethro Tull’s “Thick As A Brick 2” and UK Tour Dates

jethro tull

Jethro Tull has toured 54 countries, released 30 studio and live albums, and sold over 60 million albums.  It’s pretty safe to say this band has made a solid spot in rock and roll history.

Back in 1972 Ian Anderson wrote and recorded Thick As A Brick yet it was penned under the name Gerald Bostock. Gerald is a character Ian created. Thick As A Brick didn’t take long to peak at the #1 spot on the charts around the globe once released. It took Ian, or shall I say Gerald, 40 years to complete the follow-up to the successful album. Today Thick As A Brick 2 hits the digital shelves, as well as, Ian and the band embarking on a 3 week tour in the UK.  The setlist for the tour will consist of Thick As a Brick played in its entirety as well the newly released sequel.

Korn Brings “The Path of Totality Tour” to the Midwest

The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

KORN The Rave Milwaukee Jonathan

Coming off of the first leg of their The Path of Totality tour, Korn issued a challenge to DJ’s everywhere; Remix ‘Get Up’ or ‘Narcissistic Cannibal’, be Korn’s favorite, win a spot to DJ a live show.  This challenge was met with mass response and one lucky artist, DJ Maximillian from Maryland, was the winner.  Korn’s February 25th Milwaukee stop on the second leg of their tour was the show DJ Maximillian was privileged to mix at – much to the crowd’s dissatisfaction.

KORN The Rave Milwaukee FieldyMaximillian made 2 critical mistakes.  The first, he began his set nearly twenty minutes late.  The crowd was already anxious for the show to begin and was getting restless.  Several persons stumbled around already half in the bag and security was cracking down on all the smokers in the crowd.  The second was the taunting Maximillian gave the crowd when they began to boo him.  Rather than take it in stride and joke it away, he encouraged the negative reaction and lost the crowd even further.  While his striking personality didn’t win him any fans, one must admit that he certainly had potential.  With heavy beats and fantasy filled mixes Maximillian could produce a great album, if he could just get his transitions to run smooth rather than jerking his listeners from one sequence into the next.

Maximillian aside, J Devil (Jonathan Davis) and good friend Sluggo worked the crowd back into a very satisfied frenzy, amping up mosh pits and prepping fans for the main act to come.  Every fan of Korn and electronic music should take the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of J Devil.  J Devil’s sound is reminiscent of Take a Look in the Mirror meets electronic goodness with the recognizable sounds of Korn’s thick chords and heavy bass.

The tardiness seen in DJ Maximillian’s set continued on to be the poor habit of the evening with Korn pushing their set back nearly a half hour and then leaving a mostly lit stage to speak for itself for an additional five minutes before making an appearance.  However, once on the stage Jonathan Davis, Munky, Fieldy and drummer Ray Luzier delivered a high energy, bass pounding show that began as vibrations in your feet and built until it was reverberating through your eyes, as always.

KORN The Rave Milwaukee MunkeyOpening with early fan favorite ‘Predictable’, Jonathan Davis appeased to fans with gut wrenching emotion before quickly moving through classics on each album adding the new sounds of electro into the mix.  But the electro sound wasn’t the only new addition to Korn’s stage show.  An increased amount of strobe lighting and a very much missing vaporizer as is generally standard visible set equipment for Davis were definitely different this time around.  Perhaps the vocalist has finally got a handle on his lungs.  Given the number of dates behind the band on the first leg of this tour and the missing equipment going into the second leg, one can only hope.

After tearing through head-banging beloved singles and leaving no safe place to stand, Korn finished hard with ‘Blind’, yet another classic from their first self-titled album.  The band’s energy level never slipped and Jonathan Davis closed the show with a wide spread grin on his face that almost screamed ‘Thank you’.

Young the Giant The Rave Milwaukee Wisconsin

Young the Giant is riding high on a huge success of their second single “Cough Syrup” off their 2010 self-titled release. Another high note for the band was Fox’s hit show Glee covering  “Cough Syrup” in their latest episode.  The band is also set to play on one of the hottest music festivals this summer, Bonnaroo, as well as the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama. Their latest headlining tour is sold-out with the support of Walk the Moon. Thus, 2012 is looking good for this alternative rock band from Irvine, California.

Young the Giant The Rave Milwaukee WisconsinLast night at the Rave was very interesting. This was the first time I’ve seen Young the Giant live after hearing the chatter about “Cough Syrup.”  It’s pretty bad of me because these guys have been around since 2004 and were formerly known as The Jakes. They sure know how to make an incredible first impression and one of the things I noticed was the amazing lighted backdrop on stage; it illuminated the stage setting the tone for the show.  There were hanging lanterns along with stands of exposed light bulbs that dominated the back of the stage.  The real surprising thing I noticed was how many fans, young ones, in attendance smoked pot.  That’s all I smelled as soon as the first song was over.  It was unexpected and slightly funny because just a couple weeks before Megadeth and Motorhead were at the Rave and that very familiar scent was not present.  For Young the Giant to be playing Bonnaroo just seems more appropriate than ever.

“My Body” Music Video

I can dig Young the Giant because they are a cross between Coldplay and Kings of Leon. At times  Sameer’s vocals even reminded me of Jim Morrison from the Doors.  He has such a strong vocal presence that trumps many of the other bands in the alternative rock genre.  As mentioned above the hanging lights from the back of the stage lit up the band and created a surreal vibe for their alternative rock sound.

This is the time to catch them before they hit it really big. Tour dates and photos from their set below.

Las Vegas’ Imagine Dragons Release Interscope Debut EP

Imagine Dragons Continued Silence EP

After releasing three independent EPs and making a name for themselves on the West Coast live circuit, quartet Imagine Dragons released their debut EP Continued Silence this week on KIDintheKORNER/Interscope Records (iTunes). To celebrate, the band will perform at the Viper Room in Hollywood on February 22nd followed by dates at SXSW Music Festival.

Hailing from Las Vegas, the quartet harnessed the restless energy of “the city that never sleeps” with two EP’s in 2009 — Imagine Dragons and Hell and Silence — earning a string of local accolades including “Best Local Indie Band 2010” by Las Vegas Weekly and “Best CD of 2011” by Vegas Seven magazine for their third independent EP It’s Time. The first single from Continued Silence, “It’s Time,” takes its name from that release and is available now as a free download via TuneCore or the band’s Facebook page.

Augmenting their studio recordings, Imagine Dragons — which is Dan Reynolds (vocals), Wayne Sermon (guitar) Ben McKee (bass), Daniel Platzman (drums) — have brought their epic, larger-than-life live show to stages across the country, from headlining clubs and festivals to opening for such indie notables as Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Hot Chip, Nico Vega (whom they toured with in Fall 2010), and The Temper Trap, as well as for such major acts as Weezer and Interpol.  The band will debut their new material at a handful of upcoming shows and at SXSW Music Festival in March.

The songs on Continued Silence are just a taste of what’s to come from Imagine Dragons, who combine their synth-laden rock sound with the hip-hop sensibilities of producer, Alex Da Kid (Eminem, Rihanna). The alchemy that results when these creative forces get together is nothing short of explosive.  Recently signed by Alex Da Kid to his label KIDinaKORNER/Interscope REcords, the band is now working on tracks for their debut album.

Meet the band and get a preview of “It’s Time” in a new behind-the-scenes video from a recent photo shoot, and keep checking for updates from the road and news on the recording of their full-length release.

Lollapalooza 2012 Headliners Leaked?!

lollapalooza logoUPDATE: (4/9/2012) Another leak of the full line-up!!

If you are on Twitter you may have noticed a battle between Perry Farrell (@perryfarrell) and Lolla Leaks (@lollaleaks).  Farrell has gone as far as comparing the Lollapalooza insider that is running Lolla Leaks on Twitter to a sex offender (see images below).

Just 9 hours ago Lolla Leaks posted the supposed 2012 Lollapalooza headliners including Metallica, Beyonce, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Beck, and Sonic Youth (Final Show).  A few of the artists actually make sense.  Metallica hit the East Coast and the West Coast with the Big 4 last year and have their festival this year that IS NOT in the Midwest. For Metallica to completely skip over the Midwest just seems too cruel.  The Red Hot Chili Peppers are also on tour and would fit the Lollapalooza bill.  The only artist that I would have reservations about is Beyonce, but this could be her big post baby show.  I personally hope there is some truth to it, because I wouldn’t mind seeing all the bands, but hot damn it would be insane!

Cavo at the Fuel Room

Cavo at the Fuel Room in Libertyville, IL 2/1/2012

Cavo is a four piece rock band that hails from St. Louis, Missouri. Their career started to shine back in 2008 with an EP featuring “Champagne.” Soon after the song saw huge success on St. Louis’ rock radio station, they were picked up by Warner Bros. Records. The song made it to the their major label release, Bright Nights, Dark Days in 2009 and also sat at the number one spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. They’ve toured with some of the hottest rock bands and they are starting 2012 with Black Stone Cherry.

Cavo won over many new fans at the Fuel Room in Libertyville last night. They have a sound that mixes Rob Thomas, Incubus, and a dash of King of Leon. They played songs off their new album Thick as Thieves that will be released this spring. Check out the official music video below.
