The Broken Glass Beer Review: Fox Barrel’s Ginger & Blackcurrant

Fox Barrel's Ginger and Blackcurrant

Fox Barrel's Ginger and Blackcurrant

The best cider I have ever tasted! I’ve never had a pear cider before, it was nothing like I have ever tasted. Fox Barrel’s unfiltered pear cider has a cloudy reddish hue at first pour. This spicy red pear cider is infused with ginger extract, blackcurrant juice and organic honey. It has an aroma of sweet pear. The flavor is a rich pear and ginger at first taste. There is just enough ginger bite without that ginger burn. The last few sips are even sweeter than the first.

Tip: Give a full bottoms up tilt & swirl to evenly disperse the unfiltered pear-wine sediment.

The Broken Glass Beer Review: Bacon Maple Ale

Bacon Maple Ale

Rogue Bacon Maple Ale

Rogue Bacon Maple Ale

When you combine a Rogue Ale with a Voodoo Doughnut it creates Bacon Maple Ale. This crazy concoction contains a baker’s dozen number of ingredients including bacon and maple syrup from one of Voodoo’s signature doughnuts. Although I don’t eat meat I have to admit I was very intrigued by this collision of beer and doughnuts. I wasn’t looking forward to any sort of bacon taste. The first sip is a burst of maple syrup and concludes with a smoky aftertaste that definitely stays with you! Personally the smokiness is too overwhelming. This ale is definitely a required taste that I just didn’t like. I will be sticking with my Dead Guy Ale.

13 Ingredients:

Hops: Perle, Sterling
Yeast & Water: Pacman Yeast, Free Range Coastal Water

Yvette’s Monthly Mixer: Loopy by Three Olives

So Three Olives has this new vodka called Loopy that tastes just like Fruit Loops! It was the colorful Fruit Loop like bottle that drew me in. Liquor that tastes like one of my favorite childhood cereals!? Where could this go wrong, right? They had some recipes with the bottle that were just weird to me, one involved milk and it freaked me out. I just decided to go with a standard vodka and soda.

Drink Ingredients:
1 oz Loopy
Sprite
Ice

Drink Preparation:
Fill glass with ice, add Loopy and fill with Sprite. Garnish with Fruit Loops!

Servings: 1

The Hangover:
When I followed my nose it smelled just like Fruit Loops! My first impression was you could probably mix this with almost anything and it would be delicious! I thought I would be getting day drunk drinking this all day long. Boy was I wrong! After a short while the novelty of it all wore off and in the end it was just too fruity for me. I normally don’t mind fruity drinks but this ended up being overkill. I would prefer to have this as a shot. I think it’s a great conversation starter and fun to introduce people to but I could never stick to this all night long. Kudos to Three Olives for making their new vodka smell and taste like the real deal!

Yvette’s Monthly Mixer – Shamrock Mint

Yvettes Monthly Mixer Shamrock Mint

Welcome back to my Monthly Mixer! In honor of St Patty’s Day I would like to highlight an Irish mixture called the Shamrock Mint. It’s green, it’s creamy, and a lil filling.

Drink Ingredients:
1 oz Baileys
1 oz Crème de Menthe
Milk
Whip Cream

Drink Preparation:
Add Baileys, Crème de Menthe, fill with Milk and top with Whip Cream.

Servings: 1

The Hangover:
Honestly I could only have one. The milk threw me off a bit even though it was super tasty! I think I will keep this one in mind as a dessert cocktail. I bet this would also be good with hot chocolate….hmmm that sounds like a good idea.

Yvette’s Monthly Mixer – Yvette’s Tropical Kiss

Yvettes Monthly Mixer Tropical Kiss

Welcome back to my Monthly Mixer! I can’t believe it’s February already! In celebration of Valentine’s Day I have created a concoction that is sure to get your Valentines started right. This cocktail has the most ingredients I have ever featured. I give you “Yvette’s Tropical Kiss”.

Drink Ingredients:
1 oz Peppermint Schnapps
1 oz Rum
1 oz Gin
1 oz Triple Sec
Orange Juice
Ice

Drink Preparation:
Fill glass with ice. Add in all your ingredients and fill glass with orange juice. Stir and serve.

Servings: 1

The Hangover:
I was a bit surprised, out of all the booze in this drink it had an overall minty/orange taste. It was quite refreshing. But I gotta be honest this drink started creep on me when I was about a quarter way through. How could it not with all that booze! I think this one is a keeper!

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Michelada by Nopalito Restaurant

Michelada
Nopalito Restaurant

Michelada beer

Michelada is probably the most unique beer I have ever tasted. My sister took us to Nopalito Restaurant in San Francisco where she insisted on us trying their specialty mexican beer called Michelada. After we placed our order, I noticed the three pint glasses with what looked like hot sauce resting at the bottom about half an inch high. The bartender then filled the glasses with the beer from the tap which was a light cloudy golden color to beer. When the beer was served to us, it had a lime at the top with a rim of salt around the edge like a margarita. I’ve never experienced a beer before with salt. When I got a closer look at the beer, I noticed the thick pulpness of the oranges they use to help savior the spiciness of the beer. Really made the beer authentic and fresh. It also has some tomato juice added as well. This is a MUST HAVE beer! It was amazing. Had a serious kick to it but was not over whelming at all. If you like spice, this is the beer to try. It went well with our entire meal. Most people will only be able to handle one order because of the spice kick, but it was delicious!

The other beer in the second picture is the Negra Modelo which is another common Mexican beer. At first glance, it looks like a heavy beer that might fill you up, but it turns out to be a great beer with dinner as well.

If you are ever in San Francisco, Nopalito is a great place for families and groups because it has a family style menu with easy and delicious dishes, especially Carne Asada. You can check out the menu here.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Bittersweet Lenny’s R. I.P.A by Schmaltz Brewing Company (He’Brew)

Bittersweet Lenny’s R. I.P.A
Schmaltz Brewing Company (He’Brew)

Bittersweet Lenny's R. I.P.A

He’Brew’s Bittersweet Lenny’s R. I.P.A is one hell of a beer. It is a double I.P.A with rye malt. The pour is almost goo-y with a small head that quickly disappears. The lacing is heavy on the side of the glass as you drink it which usually gives the sign that this is a good IPA. The bitterness is very potent and noticeable right from my first sip. Along with the hop heaviness, I can also taste a fruit-y texture, ripe apple or plum type flavoring. Another aspect of this beer that I noticed right away was the smell of the alcohol. It’s alcohol by volume is 10%, which is very high and the flavoring doesn’t seem to mask it very well.

This beer is brewed by Smaltz Brewing Company or He’Brew. Also referred to as “The Chosen Beer,” which I love considering I am Jewish. If you are into IPA’s, get your hands on this one, it is worth a try.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Fred Golden Special Ale by Hair of the Dog Brewing Company

Fred Golden Special Ale
Hair of the Dog Brewing Company

Fred Golden Special Ale

Fred is a amazing golden ale beer created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt. The beer pours a nice dark hazy orange color with a really large head. Right after I poured the beer I could smell the flavors right away, with tons of spice and citrus flavors. It’s not over whelming but enough to grab your attention. One of the flavors that really pops out at me is the Belgian candy sugar mixed with a combination of Northwest hop varieties. The beer has a very sweet flavor because of this and it is so good!  It makes the beer very smooth and creamy. The alcohol content is extremely high at 10%, but the flavors really cover the alcohol well. I definitely wasn’t expecting much from this beer, but I have completely become a huge fan.

Highly recommended and a beer that you don’t need to buy a ton of. Hair of the Dog Brewing Company is out of Portland, OR. You aren’t going to find this beer in any liquor or grocery store. Gonna have to research this one but I’m sure it’s out there in a ton of locations. Go pick this one up!

Yvette’s Monthly Mixer – Bubbles n’ Blue

Yvette's Monthly Mixer Bubbles 'n Blue

New Years is just around the corner so I thought I would share a new concoction I discovered. I love Hpnotiq and combine it will all sorts of mixers but would have never mixed it up with Champagne. It was super refreshing and really helped spread out my Champagne.

Drink Ingredients:
1oz Hpnotiq
Champagne

Drink Preparation:
Add Hpnotiq to champagne flute then fill the rest with champagne. Garnish with lemon twist or orange to be fancy about it.

Servings: 1

The Hangover:
I think this is the perfect New Years mix! Hpnotiq is a sweet liquor and Champagne is delicious by itself so together they are pretty bad ass. I really liked this blend and will definitely be serving it up to ring in 2012. Enjoy!

For the 10th Day of Christmas the movie of choice is Elf.  Honestly I am not a big fan of this movie, but I feel playing a drinking game while watching it can make it tolerable. Rules to this movie are to drink anytime the Naughty or Nice List is mentioned, Buddy is scared, or Buddy screams “Santa.”

Tilted Kilt Bar Review

Tilted Kilt
1360 Lake Street
Roselle, IL 60172
www.roselle.tiltedkilt.com

So this was my first time at any Tilted Kilt, they have a few locations in the Chicago-land area. I wasn’t really sure what to expect but there were 2 things that really amazed me. 1 it’s a sports bar. Uh, didn’t peg that one. It’s cool…I like sports. 2 it was kid friendly! I was shocked to see families here chillin’ getting their grub on and catching a Blackhawks game. I nailed this place as being a regular bar.

Décor: Interesting…lots of liquor décor, posters and pictures of Stonehenge, A Knights Tale-the movie. I get it, it has a Celtic-theme of Ireland or Scotland. But what was funny was the Bravehart movie poster next to random golf photos. I think I may be missing something here….

The Crowd: I was actually surprised by the crowd. Since I knew the servers wore revealing uniforms I imagined a large crowd of older men here. So not the case. The crowd was pretty diverse with families, couples out for dinner and then you had your regular guys out to watch the Blackhawks game.

Service: So nice! Jordan was our server and she was great! When it was slow she sat down to shoot the shit. Normally I would be against this but Jordan was pretty awesome so I didn’t mind talking to her.

Liquid Courage On Tap: Lots of good beers here! Bodingtons, Harp Lager, Magic Hat #9, Woodchuck Amber Cider, Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss, Half Acre, Good Island Green Line, Hacker Pschorr, Fat Tire, MGD, Hoegaarden, Schock Top, Leinenkugel’s Seasonal, Ranger I.P.A., Dos Equis, Heinekien, Good Island 312

Eats: Pretty basic bar food. My friend ordered some Naked wings. Naked meaning plain, no sauce. She said they were really good. I can vouch for her fries tho, they were pretty yummy!

Sounds: At first we had some basic pub tunage which was alright but then the game came on and all you heard was a very loud hockey game! Mind you it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to have the game on full blast if it were a packed bar but this night was dead so I just found it to be annoying.

Parking: Private lot! No problem parking here.

Overall: Good times! Good beer choices. I will most likely be stopping back in with the family for some dinner in the near future. Although now I want to visit their other locations to see what the differences are. I hear Elgin has live bands, mostly cover bands I’m sure but the good thing is I am a cover band junkie!

12 Days of Christmas Drinking Game Day 11: Home Alone

Welcome to our 12 Days of Christmas. We are gonna countdown to Christmas the only way we know how….Drinking Games! Each day we will debut a new movie and tell you when to drink so make sure ya come back to see what we have in store for you this Christmas season! If you missed the 12th Day you can see that here! How can you miss Bad Santa?

The Rules:

The original Home Alone is definitely my favorite. For this game is to drink anytime Kevin Screams, when someone says “Kevin” and when someone gets hit or falls down.

12 Days of Christmas Drinking Game Day 12: Bad Santa

Welcome to our 12 Days of Christmas. We are gonna countdown to Christmas the only way we know how….Drinking Games! Each day we will debut a new movie and tell you when to drink so make sure ya come back to see what we have in store for you this Christmas season!

The Rules:

Our first movie is Bad Santa. Everyone loves watching this train wreck of a Christmas movie! This movie is sure to make you merry in no time. Every time Billy Bob Thornton’s character says Fuck it’s time to drink, it’ll be time for you to take a swig! I hear it’s used at least 160 times. Cheers!

Jim Beam’s Red Stag

Red Stag DrinksI ended up at the Tilted Kilt the other night to grab a drink and midway through my 4 hour stay with a friend a couple of the Tilted Kilt girls came up to us and asked if we wanted to try Red Stag.  The first thing that popped into my friend’s head was, “That’s Kid Rock‘s drink!” I just  looked at her like she was crazy.   Yet she was right,  Jim Beam partnered with several musicians such as Kid Rock and Montgomery Gentry to help spread the word about the new Bourbon.

(Quick Fact: Bourbon is the same as whiskey!  What makes Bourbon is the location in which it’s made and that is only in one place…the southern United States.)

For those who don’t like the straight up flavor and bite that whiskey has may enjoy this cherry infused bourbon from Jim Beam.   I had my first taste of the whiskey mixed with Coke.  It was a very smooth drink without the harsh edge that whiskey can have.  It also wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet for it being combined with a mixer like Coke.   I don’t mind a good whiskey and this one could top my list.

Jim Beam’s Red Stag Stats:
80 proof
40% Alc./Vol.

Recommended Serving Suggestion (recipe via JimBeam.com):

Red Stag by Jim BeamIngredients:

3 parts Red Stag by Jim Beam® Infused Bourbon
4 parts Cola

Mixing:
Pour Red Stag by Jim Beam® into 16 oz. glass half filled with ice. Fill glass with cola, stir lightly and serve.

Talking with Jesse Friedman the Co-Founder of Almanac Beer Company

Jesse Friedman almanac beer companyWe are so excited to bring you a new interview from Jesse Friedman, co-founder of Almanac Beer Company. Jesse founded Almanac with Damian Fagen in 2010 when they started brewing beer right in their apartments in San Francisco. They started with the goal in mind of brewing seasonal ales, pairing different fruits each harvest, in order to compliment locals foods and and cuisine.

Jesse handles the receipt development, barrel selection, and managing the brewer and farm relationships, while Damian handles the visual design, bottle labels, and the day to day operations of the brewery. We are were pleased have Jesse take some time to talk about his passions and Almanac Beer. Enjoy!

Jesse Friedman almanac beer companyCan you please introduce yourself and your role at Almanac Beer?

Im Jesse Friedman. I’m one of the two Co-Founders at Almanac. I’m in charge of beer recipe developement, as well as heading up sales, working with local chefs on pairings, and putting together our beer dinners.

Going back to the beginning of your brewing career, do you remember the first beer you brewed and where?

The first beer I brewed was with a homebrew batch with my roommate, just after I moved to San Francisco. It was for an Irish Red. Everything went wrong – the grain bag scorched and tore, and then the priming sugars weren’t properly distributed. Half the bottles were flat, and the other half were gushers.

What people, if any, inspire you outside of the beer industry?

I look alot to the culinary world for inspiration. There are the local big thinkgers here in San Francisco such as Alive Waters and Michael Pollan, but I’m especially inspired by the local chefs who set out to create (and succeed) in making something genuinely new and delicious – like Anthony and Karen at Mission Street Food (Now Mission Chinese Food), who created a new way of building a restaurant around great food and philanthropic giving.http://blog.missionstreetfood.com.

When did Almanac Beer start and what is the inspiration for the name and it’s logo?

Almanac Beer launched as a business about a year ago, but Damian and I had been working on it for a few years before that. The name comes from the Farber’s Almanacs, which record each season. We try to do the same thing with our beer, and use hyper seasonal fruit that will leave a unique character from the season it was brewed. Our design work is all done in house by the other half of Almanac, Damian. The tree etching was custom made for us by a local artist, and really does a great job of making us stand out on the shelf. For us, the Oak tree and it’s roots it does a great job of illustrating that our beer is different, and directly ties to the seasons and local farms.

How would you best describe your brewing style?

Inspired by the local food scene in Northern California. We start with Belgian-style ales, then layer on local fruit, unique sugars, and (sometimes) a loose west-coast hand with the hops. We are less concerned with fitting into a particular style or category than with our beer being food friendly and delicious.

In what states and markets can our readers find you beer and is there a plan for expansion?

We’re currently only available in the San Francisco Bay Area, but are slowly expanding out to more of California.

Does Almanac have any new projects or beers coming down the pipeline to share with our readers?

We’re about to release our sophomore effort: a Farmhouse Pale with Plums. We brewed a Belgian-style Farmehouse Ale, then added in 1,000 Lbs of plums from Twin Girls Farms. We finished with a dry hopping of Cascade and Amarillo hope to give it a bright, citrusy aroma. It’s fermenting as I write this, and expect it to be out in the early November. You can learn more about this bere here.

Does Almanac have a Facebook or Twitter page for our readers to check out? If so, have you seen an impact on your brewery from these social networks?

Of course! We’re on Twitter @AlmanacBeer, and also on Facebook athttp://www.facebook.com/almanacbeer. We’re very active in social media, since it gives us a great way to communicate directly with customers and friends online. Sincer what we’re doing is different and new, it really makes a big difference to be available and transparent online. We love live blogging each brew, and then hearing back from customers how our beer is, and what they pair it with.

Jesse Friedman almanac beer companyWhere can our reader find additional information about your brewery, beer festivals, new beers, tour info?

We’re online at AlmanacBeer.com, where you can sign up for our newsletter, which always has info about releases and upcoming events.

Okay, here’s a tough one for ya. If you could only drink one beer for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oh man. If I had to pick JUST one, it’d have to be Orval. I love it, especially since it ages so well in the bottle. Young it bright and hoppy, then if you let it age a bit, you get a while new beer – funky and farmhouse as the Brett takes over.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions, Jesse! Looking forward to drinking more of your beer. Make sure to get your hands on Almanac Beer if you are living or visiting Northern California.

Yvette’s Monthly Mixer – Blue Snowflake

Yvette's Monthly Mixer Blue Snowflake

Christmas is coming!!!! In light of the holiday spirit try this tasty Hpnotiq concoction. Now the original recipe calls for 2 oz of Hpnotiq but I thought it was a bit much so we made it with only 1. Turned out really good! But I will leave that up to you, either way it’s gonna be amazing!

Drink Ingredients:
1 oz Hpnotiq
1 oz Vodka
Pineapple Juice
Ice

Drink Preparation:
Fill glass with ice. Add Hpnotiq, Vodka, then fill glass with pineapple juice. Give it a lil stir or shake it up in a shaker and enjoy! I garnished with a lemon but you could get crazy and use some rock candy sticks.

Servings: 1

The Hangover:
This tiny cocktail is packed with a punch! Hpnotiq & Vodka!? This is gonna get you all warm and fuzzy inside in no time! I know it probably doesn’t sound very appealing, personally I would have never thought of mixing Hpnotiq and Vodka together but this was delicious!

Enjoy & let me know what ya think of the Blue Snowflake!

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Harvest Pumpkin Ale by Blue Moon Brewing Company

Harvest Pumpkin Ale
Blue Moon Brewing Company

Blue Moon Beer

The Harvest Pumpkin Ale is a seasonal beer brewed around the Fall by Blue Moon Brewing Company. The ale is brewed with pumpkin and nutmeg, then with a touch of wheat that gives the beer its smooth finish. I am usually not a huge fan of Blue Moon but I grabbed it because I am a huge fan of pumpkin and have been enjoying the fall seasonal beers, so I couldn’t leave this one out.

The beer initially poured with an reddish orange color and a half inch head which lasted throughout most of drinking it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really taste the pumpkin and nutmeg flavoring as much as I would have hoped. The smell of the beer wasn’t really strong either as I think the carbonation really killed the scent. The Ale wasn’t as heavy as I was expecting either and was very easy to drink and enjoy. I would definitely drink Harvest Pumpkin again if it was offered to me but it wouldn’t be the first fall beer I would buy.

Most people probably wouldn’t know this, but Blue Moon is owned by Coors Brewing Company. Coors never makes this clear to their drinkers because they want you to think that Blue Moon is another quality craft beer. With that said, you can find the pumpkin ale at any grocery store or liquor store around the country, but only for a limited time as it is brewed only for the Fall. If you can get your hands on one, give it a try, but I wouldn’t jump at this one right away.

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Anchor Summer Beer by Anchor Brewing Company

Anchor Summer Beer
Anchor Brewing Company

Anchor Summer Beer

Anchor Summer Beer is an American wheat ale that was first brewed back in 1984. This is a really nice light refreshing beer. The initial pour has a really light crisp golden color with an unusually large head, lasted about 2-3 minutes. This is due to the protein contributed by the wheat which gives it such a large head. This summer beer is an all-malt beer with over 50% coming from the wheat and is fermented with a traditional “ale” yeast. This is a very easy beer to drink. Nothing stands out in terms of tastes which makes it for a nice even and easy drink to enjoy. I would definitely recommend this beer to all beer drinkers. Pick this one up before the summer is over!

Farbrew’s Beer Review: Punkin Ale by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Punkin Ale

Wow! This beer is amazing. Definitely one of the most unique beers I have ever had. My initial attraction to this beer was the beer bottle’s upper logo which says “Punk.” When I saw that, I knew I had to try this beer. The initial pour had a copper color with a medium head and no lacing on the glass. The initial taste really brings out the cinnamon and brown sugar instantly. After my first sip, I was skeptical about the pumpkin flavoring because I couldn’t taste it right away. But after 2 or 3 sips the pumpkin and nutmeg tastes really stood out, almost as a surprise, and it was delicious! This is a perfect autumn beer and one that I highly recommend trying. Some beer drinkers might think that this is a type of beer that you would have one of, but I would definitely have a couple of these at a time as they are not as heavy as you would assume. Although, the alcohol content is 7.0%, which is on the higher end. I would also recommend letting this beer sit out on the counter for about 10 minutes after you have taken it out of the fridge. By doing this, you are allowing the flavors of the beer to come out. Go find this beer before it’s too late because this will be one of the better unique tasting beers you will try.

Punkin Ale is brewed by Dogfish Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware.
