Gary Clark, Jr. - 2014 Tour

Gary Clark, Jr. drew fans into the United Center early on March 8, opening for Kings of Leon on their current North American tour. His participation on this arena tour, which approached a sell-out for last night’s show in Chicago, offers an ideal setting for Clark. Particularly in a a city that’s indigenous to a subculture of blues music.

Jennifer Hudson brings “Music, Love, Spirit, and Faith” to Ravinia

Jennifer Hudson
Ravinia Festival
Highland Park, IL

“Music, Love, Spirit, Faith”

Those are the words that Jennifer Hudson left imprinted in the minds of her fans who attended her sold out show at Ravinia. They can be used to accurately describe her heartfelt performance and latest album I Remember Me.

Jennifer Hudson has been through a lot emotionally in the past few years and it definitely reflects in her voice. She sings from within; staying true to every lyric, melody, and every song she sings.

She commanded the stage the minute she stepped out, singing “Feeling Good.” The reaction of the audience was one of amazement. I could overhear so many fans commenting on how amazing she looked. Yet aside from her looks, Jennifer has always been known for her belting voice.  From singing “No one Gonna Love You” to “Where you at” she made it look so effortless. She also sang few singles from her debut album and from Dreamgirls. As well as a duet to Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There” accompanied by her friend and formal idol singer George Huff.

There were many moments throughout her performance where you could feel her spirit and emotion. They were evidently apparent during her performance of “I Remember Me.” It was one of her strongest moments of the show and she even received a standing ovation from the audience as she gracefully shed a few tears after getting very emotional. Her album and single “I remember Me” reflect the hardships she’s been through in her past but stays on a positive note reminding us that we can get through anything.

Throughout her performance I was secretly wishing to hear “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going.” I felt slight disappointment as she ended her set with  “Spotlight.” Yet, as the audience was slowly exiting the venue; those of us who chanted for an encore got our wish. An amazing show ended memorably with a dynamic performance of “And I am Telling you I’m Not Going.”

From Idol, to Dreamgirls, to a successful solo career. Jennifer Hudson knows to stay true to her roots by always remembering who she is.

Timber Timbre brings gothic blues to Joe’s Pub

Timber Timbre
Joe’s Pub –  New York
Enter Joe’s Pub and lights are dimmed as Taylor Kirk, Mika Posen and Simon Trottier (aka Timber Timbre) emerge on stage.  Two red lights are illuminated for the rest of the evening.  This friends is the mood for the night.  Dark shadows lulled by the guttural voice of Mr. Kirk, which is reminiscent of one Tom Waits but a little lighter on the raspiness. The Canadian trio begins with “Bad Ritual”, which nicely blends with the clattering dishes in the background.  Mika’s plucks of her violin provided a sweet yet haunting contrast to the deep bass and sharp strums of Taylor’s guitar.

“Keep on Creepin On” could be the new theme song for True Blood.  Feels like you are lurking around Bill’s plantation house.  Timber Timbre’s tunes are dark and cavernous, as Taylor’s vocal echo on “Black Water”.  The band have spoken about how an introductions to Sam Cooke and 50’s dop wop shaped the new record.  You can hear the influences with the incorporation of playful major and minor chords played in repetition on several tracks.

The demeanor of the band is strictly business.  Taylor barely speaks only to indicate the next song isn’t as “romantic” or quick thank you’s.  The audience did not even know the right moments to applaud as if we were going to break some ominous seance.  From the strums of Simon’s lap steel to Mika’s glide of her bow, the pitch grew like chants.  Welcome to the world of Timber Timbre.

The Northstar Session on Parenthood 9/21 on NBC!

Earlier this month the Southern California pop rock band, The Northstar Session, taped their cameo in the upcoming episode of NBC’s Parenthood.  On Parenthood Crosby (Daz Shepard) plays a music producer working on the NorthStar Session’s new single “You Come Up Like a Rose.”  Lucky for the guys they just have to play themselves and do what they do best, rock it out.  Just a little factoid about the episode, the recording took place in the famous Village Recorders studio. Such legends as Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, and Supertramp have cut albums there.

Parenthood just became a must-see on must-see tv. Tune in on September 21st at 10/9 Central on NBC.

Check out the Northstar Session’s latest release, Winter Collections, that is available now on iTunes.

He is more than a singer songwriter – he is a craftsman creating moods and sharing thoughts through impeccable  lyric writing and a deft hand at creating a melody suited for his – the most lonesome and troubled voice this side of Roy Orbison. [Read more…]

Amos Lee, Soul Revisited

Amos Lee
Lincoln Hall – Chicago, IL

Amos LeeAmos Lee makes creating music look easy. Lee’s approach is so naturalistic I thought that I could pick up a guitar and just start playing. While it did not really work out for me, Amos Lee presented a performance filled with the best of his folk, a bit of his funk with a few sultry cover songs mingled in-between. Throughout his EPs and full length records, Lee’s sound changes from anything to slow progressive rock to thoughtful alternative folk. His wide range of music can be attributed to his life experiences which he draws from in his honest lyrics.

Lee mentioned to his young and old fans that in a few weeks the singer-songwriter would be returning to the studio to start recording his fourth full length album. While there is no title yet for the upcoming record, Lee provided many new songs from the future release expected this fall. This tour, the “Supply & Demand” tour, is in support of his 2006 album even though he has released another full length album (Last Days At the Lodge) since.

Amos LeeAmos Lee started out the massive show by playing with his band mates (whose names I did not catch). The trio rocked out some of Lee’s younger hits from his debut album and beyond. After a bit of his solo set, Amos donned his best Marvin Gaye impression and introduced “Angel”, the suit clad manifestation of low-down dirty soul with a falsetto voice to match.

“To those of you who brought someone with you tonight… If you don’t know about them yet, now would be the time to know.”

The exchange was a humorous break in between Lee’s down tempo solo set lasting from one of his first singles, “Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight” to his most recent and sexiest Last Days At The Lodge single, “Won’t Let Me Go.” Lee even introduced one of his newest acoustic songs, “Flower,” set to be released on his next album.
Amos LeeAmos Lee recounted stories and memories of past tours throughout the lengthy set. One in particular was of his song “Street Corner Preacher” which was originally written by the songwriter with a thought and a steady stomp. The honest words of “Seen It All Before” captured the audience’s hearts with an emotional sincerity that cannot be bought or borrowed. Lee’s world worn thoughts are propelled by a youthful spirit creating a timeless folk alternative.

Here’s the set list:

“Supply and Demand”
“Bottom of the Barrel”
“Across the Ocean”
“El Camino”
“Keep It loose, Keep It Tight”
“Black River”
“Street Corner Preacher”
“Won’t Let Me Go”
“Sweet Pea”
“Seen It All Before”
“Night Train”
“The Wind”
“Fat Bottom Girls” (Queen Cover)
“Arms Of A Woman”
“Learned A Lot”

As you can see, Amos Lee played through more than enough of his three albums, playing at least half a dozen new songs and one out of the ordinary Boys II Men cover. As soulful as he is thoughtful, Lee gratefully announced he would be signing his merchandise until Lincoln Hall kicked him out. Expect a lot more coverage as his upcoming singles are released.

The Low Anthem’s First Ever Headlining Tour!

The Low Anthem
Lincoln Hall – Chicago, IL

The Low Anthem just started their first headlining tour on March 11th in Pittsburg. Hopefully you will get a chance to see the foursome play before the release of an upcoming album- rumored to be a live album! The Low Anthem’s recent full length album, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, was recorded at their new studio located inside an old, abandoned pasta sauce factory (that they pretend is haunted.) I guess March was a big month for The Low Anthem, because they released a 7” vinyl simply titled after the single, ”Charlie Darwin.” The vinyl features several live tracks as B-sides including “Sally Where’d You Get Your Liquor From” and “Don’t let Nobody Turn You Around” which were previously unreleased. The Low Anthem also got a chance to show off at SXSW!

Kenneth Pattengale single “Freckles” from his forthcoming Milan Records release Storied Places

Don’t miss Kenneth on 1/31/2009 at El Cid in Los Angeles
More Shows to come!
Watch Freckles Here

Kenneth Pattengale works outside-or at least on the fringes-of what the music industry might traditionally call its own. Overthe last eight years, Pattengale has taken inspiration from the career paths of artists like Randy Newman, Elvis Costello and personal hero Joe Henry byexploring what it means to wear the differing hats of film composer, recordproducer and performing songwriter.

The music calledinto question is hard to classify. It runs the gamut from swamp musicto rhythm & blues, lullaby to country & western, folk song to pianoballad and beyond. The songs take direction from the stories they tell, notnecessarily held together by a clear musical style but by the authenticitywith which the stories are told.Along with the artists thatPattengale looks towards for career inspiration, he hopes to follow TomWaits, Gillian Welch, Chris Smither and Loudon Wainwright in their abilityto conjure a unique American voice by transforming emotional experience intonarrative.

Beginning with Downtown LA in 2001,Pattengale has independently released five full-length albums of original material. He has just finished recording a new collection of materialentitled Storied Places, the first to see a departure fromPattengale’s own label Four Six Productions. The record is tobe released on January 27, 2009 by Milan Records (Ryko/WEAdistributed).

Pattengale spent 12 weeks at the beginning of2007 writing and recording what would become the score for the Germananimated film Die Drei Rauber, which was produced by Tom Tykwer’sproduction company X-Filme.Shortly after, he started to perform hisown material for live audiences in Los Angeles. “I hadn’t played live foralmost four years.I was always scared of not having enough controlover the performance environment, or lacking the textures only available inthe studio. In many ways, working on the film-being collaborative innature-forced a re-evaluation.It made me yearn to make a connectionwith people beyond what the recordings alone have to offer.”Hecontinues to perform live sets of original material often in his native Los Angeles.

In addition to countless short films, two features and five albums, Pattengale has produced records for a varied group of artists, from hardcore sensation From First to Last for major labelInterscope to rootsy Americana newcomers Matt Taylor and his Laurels forPattengale’s own indie imprint. It’s the balance between the threearenas Pattengale works within that drives his career. He explains,”Upon seeking advice from a hero of mine, I was urged to simply do the workthat lay in front of me.I’ve found a tremendous personal and emotional success in following that advice-putting myself in situations thatreward a hard work ethic and a healthy imagination but, above all, acommitment to honesty in your work.”

Pattengale is, as he putsit, a “ripe but withered twenty-six years old,” holds a bachelor’s degree inhistory from the University of Southern California and “fights [himself] forelbow room among stacks of books, scraps, instruments & computers” inLos Angeles, California.

A New Year’s with Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band

Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band
California Center for the Performing Arts – Escondido, CA

Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band California Center for the Performing Arts - Escondido, CA 12/31/2008

For the second year in a row we hit up the local arts center in Escondido, California. It’s part of First Night Escondido, which is intended to be a dry (liquor-free) family event. We arrived just in time for the 9:00pm fireworks and to catch the second half of Billy Watson’s performance. This would also be the second time we’ve seen him perform. Last year he was amazing and the most entertaining performer of the night. He and the band showed off their talents again this year.

Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band California Center for the Performing Arts - Escondido, CA 12/31/2008Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band are from Oceanside, CA. These guys hit up the local Southern Cali scene quite a bit. Billy jokes onstage most of the time they are shoved in the corner of a packed restaurant and they have to use his wittiness and humor to get people to turn their heads and notice there is a five piece band playing. They are usually competing against the huge tvs in the restaurants. He might not be able to joke about that for long. It appears that their following has grown because this year like it was last year ended up being standing room only. They are set to play the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach and it’s looking like they are finally getting out of their corner and taking center stage.

Billy and the band are incredibly entertaining. Think Brian Setzer for the blues! Billy uses humor in the show and he also uses props such as masks and he brings is own old time mic. Billy is amazing because he is all over the stage in his mobster-like suite and the rest of the guys just laugh at him sometime for the things he does. The chemistry in the band is genuine.

Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band California Center for the Performing Arts - Escondido, CA 12/31/2008Billy also plays the harmonic and rocks out with the best of them. When I walked around after Billy’s set I was telling people that we saw Billy Watson. Their first reaction was, “The guy that plays the harmonica, right?” With all his stage antics he’s best known for his harmonica abilities. All I can say is if you are in the Southern California region a must is checking out these fabulous blues players.
