Of Montreal Drop Psychedelic Vibes At The Metro

Of Montreal
Metro – Chicago, IL

03/28/12

Performing to a sold out crowd is an achievement on its own. When you’re of Montreal and have 10 Albums behind it should be more of an expectation. Of Montreal returned to their most loyal city, and Chicago fans playing to a sold out show at the Metro.

Their new Album Paralytic Stalks like most all of the lead singer’s, Kevin Barnes, albums is a personal reflection yet he did mention that It would not be an instantly gratifying collective and that it would take time to take it all in as a whole. Taking this into consideration, it was expected that their tour for Paralytic Stalks would be way chilled out and less theatrical then their past. Yet, compared to other shows they only performed a small fraction of songs from their current album.

Their show started off with “Gelid Ascent”, from Paralytic Stalks, as they introduced colorful projected images onto their set. A dapper Kevin Barnes stepped onstage wearing a trim grey suit while keeping in touch with his signature effeminate stage persona through wearing a red ruffle button up and electric blue eye shadow. While the set tone was bit more serious it did however pick up as they performed songs from their past albums. There were even a few appearances by their imaginative creations which consisted of white creatures and the infamous human pigs which were a main attraction on their last tour. They finished off a fun set with “The Past is A Grotesque Animal.” Yet they hit their high when they came back onstage for an encore which consisted of a potpourri of songs from their album “Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?” It was the highlight of the show as they danced on stage with their mythical creatures while confetti explosions went off.

While this tour was more subtle and less outrageous then their past, Of Montreal seem to release a new album almost every year. It will be interesting to see what they’ll have for us next.

Falling in Love with Kimbra’s “Settle Down” EP

Kimbra
Settle Down EP
Label: Warner Bros. Records
Released: 10/18/2011

Kimbra Settle Down EPKimbra is a 21-year-old New Zealand pop sensation.  She released her 4 song EP Settle Down on October 18th via Warner Bros. Records.   The EP includes her catchy hit “Settle Down,” “Limbo,” a remix of “Cameo Lover,” and “Plain Gold Ring” performed live at Sing Sing.   The EP can be purchased here.

Kimbra already released her album Vows in New Zealand and Australia, where it was certified gold.  She is currently working on a full length album for the U.S. release through Warner Bros. Records. The full length album is set for a Spring 2012 release.

The Settle Down EP is one the catchiest pop EP’s that has been released this year.  “Settle Down’s” catchiness comes from the hand-clapping rhythm, tied in with the heavy bass line that will make any person catch the fever.   The second track, “Limbo” is no less pop infused than “Settle Down.”  It’s the crescendo that kicks off “Limbo” and leads into more hand-clapping rhythms with Kimbra’s smooth and fluid lyrics flawlessly intertwined.

Kimbra’s Official “Settle Down” Music Video:

With two gangbuster pop melodies at the forefront of the Settle Down EP, it’s a little hard to simmer down into the slower melodies of “Plain Gold Ring.” Granted just because this cover of Nina Simone’s “Plain Gold Ring” takes more of a slower tempo, and is very stripped down, doesn’t mean it isn’t an awesome track.    The final track on the all-too-short EP is “Cameo Lover.”  The song gets the full club remix courtesy of Sam Sparro & Golden Touch.  I must say I am a little attached to the original mix versus the remix.

Overall, the EP is something refreshing and a must-have for those who are looking for some new music to get them on their feet and moving!  It will definitely keep me intrigued until Kimbra’s 2012 full album release.

The track-listing for Settle Down is as follows:
“Settle Down”
“Limbo”
“Plain Gold Ring” (Live at Sing Sing)
“Cameo Lover” (Sam Sparro & Golden Touch Remix)

Flashback Fridays: Crystal Waters’ “100% Pure Love”

Crystal Waters’ “100% Pure Love” Music Video:

Crystal Waters’ first Billboard hit wasn’t even supposed to be for her. She originally wrote “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)” for Ultra Nate, but the label was so stunned by the song they wanted Crystal to sing it herself. the song reached the #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. “100% Pure Love” lived on the charts for 45 weeks and peaked at #11.

What’s Crystal up to now? She’s teamed up with Yolanda Be Cool for “Le Bump.” You can hear the clip below:
Yolanda Be Cool "Le Bump" Ft Crystal Waters (Original) [PREVIEW] by Globalprpool

According to Crystal’s Twitter account it sounds like Crystal and CeCe Peniston teamed up for a couple shows, but apparently they are the only ones that knew when and where, because I’ve check both of their sites and came up empty. It’s a shame because that would be a show I wouldn’t miss!

Fun Facts About Crystal Waters:
-Crystal’s Great Aunt was one of the first African American vocalists to appear in mainstream Hollywood musicals.
-Her father was Junior Waters who was a famed Jazz musician.
-She studied Computer Science at Howard University
-Crystal also recorded a song under a different name, Chrissy Ward.

Flashback Fridays: CeCe Peniston’s “Finally”

CeCe Peniston’s “Finally” Music Video

CeCe Peniston was signed to A&M Records back in 1990 and her debut, Finally, went Gold and sold over 3 million copies worldwide.  The song of the same name stayed on the Billboard charts for 33 weeks and peaked at #5 back in 1992. The song did hit #4 on The Radio Songs Charts and #26 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart.

It may seem like she is a one hit wonder, but CeCe hit the charts again with “We Got a Love Thang,” “In The Mood,” “I’m Not Over You,” and 4 other songs off Finally, Thought Ya Knew, and I’m Movin’ On. After her last release, I’m Movin’ On, she hit the theatrical stage as Glinda the Good Withc in The Wiz.  CeCe also hit the big screen with Don’t Touch if You Ain’t Prayed as well as Pastor Jones.

October 3rd she released “Finally” Remixes through Paul Oakenfold’s label Perfecto Records and 16 BARS Music.

Where Are You?

Kelly Rowland
Here I am
Released: July 22, 2011
Universal Motown

Kelly Rowland Here I Am Cover

The other girl in Destiny’s Child put out another album. Not the rich one, not the religious one, the other one. The one that makes all the singles that you know and love, but have no idea who sings them? That’s right her, Kelly Rowland. Kelly is good for a hot single now and again but I don’t think she ever needs to make a full album. She’s alright jumping on a Ne-Yo track and doing a hook or doing an intro to a new Kells single and we’ll know she ‘s still alive and this will suffice on paying her rent. Truly homegirl needn’t 10 opportunities to hit the target, because 8 will miss the mark. Kelly has a problem repeating herself, repeating herself, repeating herself on the cd – when she runs out of creative lyrics and it’s annoying annoying annoying. If you have heard the two biggest singles “Commander” and “Motivation” you needn’t hear anymore. Especially the opening track where Kelly blatantly impersonates B. Kelly bites B so often on the CD that really the only difference in Kelly’s music is that Kelly drops the N word in almost every single and she’s not afraid to get dirty, tell you how and where she wants it and in which rooms. All of which could have been contained inside two dance singles, or an EP. The extra tracks just remind us that Kelly isn’t a Beyonce, sadly, she may not even know who she is.

Kickin’ it Old School: Culture Beat’s “Mr. Vain” Video

This isn’t the original video because YouTube won’t let any of the original videos be embedded. Nice going YouTube! Above is the Recall version of the song. It is more of the dance version with more sex appeal. Here is a direct link to the original Mr. Vain video with all the 90’s cheesiness.

“Mr. Vain” peaked at #2 on the Billboard Dance Charts in December of 1993. Overall the song only hit #17 on the Billboard charts back on January 22, 1994. The band really needed a “We’re big in Europe” t-shirt as they experience more notoriety overseas than here in America.  Fun fact, the band went through many line-up changes and even replaced Tania Evans in 1997 with Kim Sanders. Tania Evans wasn’t the original female vocal for the band, but she is the voice on their biggest hits “Mr. Vain” and “Got to Get It.”

Where is the band now? According to Wikipedia the band is still around, but I’d like to say otherwise.  The band’s site is non-existent and the last song they released was “Your Love” back in 2008.

Torsten Fenslau, the founder of the band, died in a car accident in 1993.

Tania Evans released an album of house music called Strength To Carry On back in 2003 and then wed in 2004.

Jay Supreme left Culture Beat back in 1997 to start a solo career. He only released one single to date and it was “Your Love (Encore)” together with Cheryll Lynn back in 2000.

Ke$ha was back in Chicago at the Charter One Pavilion showing off her I am the Dance Commander dance moves on her Get $leazy Tour.

Ke$ha’s debut album Animal was release back in January of 2010 to mixed reviews, but was a hit with fans. It spawned her biggest hit “Tik Tok“.  It is odd to see a large pop act drop another album just 10 months after releasing her first major label debut, but her reason for doing doing so was for her touring set.  She told Spin magazine in an interview back in November of 2010, “Not to sound like a cheese dick, but my fans are my entire life at this point because I’m always on the road. I feel like they’ve become my family. With my first album, I only had enough material for an hour-long show, and I wanted enough for a two-hour dance party that’s gonna take over the planet. Plus, I wrote songs all throughout this crazy whirlwind experience of the past year. “

Last November her second studio album, Cannibal, was released and then the remixed album,  I Am the Dance Commander, dropped on March of this year. It’s a great way to milk fans for money by releasing remixed album. Apparently it’s the new thing to do. Ke$ha says she has hundreds of songs written so it’s just a matter of time before a new studio album hits the digital shelves.

Dancing it up at Perry’s Stage with Lady D, Girl Talk & Kid Cudi

Lady D lollapalooza

Lady D at Perry's Stage

So Perry’s Stage was ginormous this year! Everyone who played there was under an enormous tent which was great for hiding from the rain, but ended up being a hot and sweaty place to party with Lady D & Girl Talk. Lady D’s dance party opened up with some samples from The Isley Brother’s “Who’s That Lady”, The Commodores’ “Three Times a Lady” & Modjo’s “Lady”. I honestly thought Lady D would have a bigger crowd since she is a Chicago native. But the crowd got a lil skimpy when she hit the deck. Yet the crowd that was there was fun! Everyone showing their love dancing around and for some in a drug induced state. I swear I was bound to get a contact high just from being in the center of the crowd!

Girl Talk mixed it up at Perry’s! I was so excited to see the Gregg Gillis’ hot and sweaty body but I was nowhere even close to seeing anything! The party was so mammoth it was spilling outside of Perry’s tent into the streets. The party was definitely hoppin’ and I was so sad to not be in the center of it all.

The third day of Lollapalooza can make you feel like a slacker. I mean 3 days in the sweltering heat can take it out of you!  Cudi was scheduled to headline Sunday night against Foo Fighters & Deadmau5. Rumors flooded the grounds saying Kid was gonna cancel his show. Many fans ended up heading out early due to all the rain that hit the grounds in the afternoon. But there were some troopers that hung in there for the long hall!

More photos are on their way! (photos of Kid Cudi are from his 8/5 performance at Kanrocksas)

Lollapalooza Expands to Brazil

lollapalooza brazil logo

lollapalooza chile logo

Perry Farrell kicked off Lollapalooza this morning with exciting news! Last year Perry and the gang expanded the Lollapalooza franchise to Chile and next year not only will Lolla take place in Chile on March 31-April 1, but also in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the Jockey Club April 7-8th. The Jockey Club is an iconic site in Brazil. It is in the heart of Sao Paulo which is the largest city in South America. The location is prime for the 20,000,000 locals. The stage setting is on a racetrack where Eminem performed his historic concert last year. Perry said, “The Brazilians have a very rich history of celebration. If we (Lolla) can rub together with them, there’s no telling what heights that party will reach.” The two international locations are natural expansions for the historic Lollapalooza brand.

This morning at the press conference talk of the economic impact on Chicago was touched upon. Lollapalooza brings in $85 million into the local economy. Roughly 40% of Lollapalooza crowd is from out of state and the festival sees 90,000 fans, or weirdoes as Perry called them, walk through the gates each day.

The Parkways Foundation has teamed up with Lollapalooza and takes in $8.5 million from the festival. The money isn’t just reinvested back in the rehabilitation of the Chicago lakefront, where Lollapalooza calls home for 3 days, but expands into the city where neighborhoods need it most.

If partnering with The Parkways Foundation wasn’t enough, Berkley School of Music also teamed up with Lolla to give out a full scholarship to Berkley School of Music each year to students who audition and meet their criteria. The scholarships are backed by Goldman Sacs.

Fool’s Gold – Leave No Trace

Fool’s Gold
Leave No Trace
Release Date: August 16
I Am Sound Records

Leave No Trace, the follow-up to Fool’s Gold’s self-titled debut, does not divert from the dancy fun times that were introduced back in 2009.  Luke Top and Lewis Pesacov continue infusing African beats and rhythms to the ten tracks that comprise the new album out August 16.

Lewis has been a busy boy fronting his other band Foreign Born and producing Best Coast’s debut album.  He even has been tapped to compose some Afro-beats for a recent Nike commercial.  His creative energies aren’t dry when you hear the opening track, “A Dive”, as percussions are a blaze.  One can’t help but shuffle side to side.  The party continues on with “Wild Window” from the early sound of lasers. Yes friends, lasers! Check it out below.

In the middle of the album is the track “Balmy” which saunters in with a slow jam Bollywood cadence.  I have to say the second half the album is stronger with stellar tracks like “Tel Aviv” sung in Luke’s native tongue of Hebrew and “Bark and Bite” reminds me of the fervor in Lewis’ other band Foreign Born.  Last but definitely not least, “Lantern” serves as a perfect doo-wop close set against lovely wind instruments.  Fool’s Gold hits the jackpot again with Leave No Trace.

Having just released the debut single and finishing up their forthcoming album, Lights Over Paris unveiled the video for “I’m Not A Gangsta” today on YouTube. The entertainingly boisterous video was filmed in Los Angeles and includes a cameo from hip hop phenomenon, Game. Directed by John Asher and produced by Michelle Larkin, the comedic spin makes this music video one that should not be missed.

The long-awaited track, produced by Dr Luke’s Ammo (Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Katy Perry), recently hit radio and continues to gain spins on Top 40 stations nationwide. It’s infectious melody constitutes “I’m Not A Gangsta” to be the explosive hit of the summer.

The forthcoming full length album will also include producers Kool Kojak (Flo Rida, Travis Barker) and Matt Squire (3OH!3, Ke$ha, Panic! At The Disco) as well as a feature from musical sensation, DEV. “It’s not just another pop record that you will shelf after a few months, we worked extremely hard to make this a timeless record,” explains front-man Robb University.

Moby’s Destoyed – Now You Can Download the Cure for Insomnia

Moby Destroyed

Got sleep issues? Try Moby’s newest release “Destroyed” (on Little Idiot Records). If this collection of self-indulgent faux-soundtrack cuts doesn’t put you to sleep – you might need serious medical help.

This has to be the only album in existence that makes lush string arrangements sound boring and monotone. There is nothing here that I can hang my ears on. What Moby has released is him and a computer making navel-gazing music that would even annoy the most jaded navel gazer.

There are moments of sweetness, (“The Violet Bear It Away”) but they quickly erode into repetitive droning musical ideas. He – who could have really demolished preconceived notions and pioneered the genre – relies on loops and cheese-ball edits to try to elicit an emotion from the listener.

Most of what he has created here sounds like the soundtrack to a sad European movie where it is always raining and someone dies and there is a lot of slo-mo running alone through the crowded streets of the city.

The most frustrating part of listening to this disc is some of the ideas truly are beautiful. Some of the chord progressions tap into something medieval and powerful – but rather than follow the idea to a logical conclusion – he (for the most part) just loops it back around into itself.

“Stella Maris” is an exception and – actually – almost reason to buy this disc. If you can legally download this one cut – I strongly suggest it. Moby finds a way to blend ancient spirituality into the full-bodied strings and the reed-thin computer generated arrangements.

If the whole disc was as amazing – revelatory – as “Stella Maris” Moby would have a new fan. Sadly there is nothing on the disc that is even in the ballpark. Legally download this cut and leave the rest of this disc to the hardcore fans who will accept everything he records, because they are – well – hardcore fans.

Jennifer Hudson brings “Music, Love, Spirit, and Faith” to Ravinia

Jennifer Hudson
Ravinia Festival
Highland Park, IL

“Music, Love, Spirit, Faith”

Those are the words that Jennifer Hudson left imprinted in the minds of her fans who attended her sold out show at Ravinia. They can be used to accurately describe her heartfelt performance and latest album I Remember Me.

Jennifer Hudson has been through a lot emotionally in the past few years and it definitely reflects in her voice. She sings from within; staying true to every lyric, melody, and every song she sings.

She commanded the stage the minute she stepped out, singing “Feeling Good.” The reaction of the audience was one of amazement. I could overhear so many fans commenting on how amazing she looked. Yet aside from her looks, Jennifer has always been known for her belting voice.  From singing “No one Gonna Love You” to “Where you at” she made it look so effortless. She also sang few singles from her debut album and from Dreamgirls. As well as a duet to Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There” accompanied by her friend and formal idol singer George Huff.

There were many moments throughout her performance where you could feel her spirit and emotion. They were evidently apparent during her performance of “I Remember Me.” It was one of her strongest moments of the show and she even received a standing ovation from the audience as she gracefully shed a few tears after getting very emotional. Her album and single “I remember Me” reflect the hardships she’s been through in her past but stays on a positive note reminding us that we can get through anything.

Throughout her performance I was secretly wishing to hear “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going.” I felt slight disappointment as she ended her set with  “Spotlight.” Yet, as the audience was slowly exiting the venue; those of us who chanted for an encore got our wish. An amazing show ended memorably with a dynamic performance of “And I am Telling you I’m Not Going.”

From Idol, to Dreamgirls, to a successful solo career. Jennifer Hudson knows to stay true to her roots by always remembering who she is.
