Shortly after the announcement of Ben + Vesper’s sophomore album, and first full-length in four years,HONORS, the husband and wife duo gave listeners a hint of what was to come by sharing the track “My Father’s Eyes”. Now, with just three weeks to go before the album’s January 25th release on Sounds Familyre, the pair is unleashing another track, “Knee-Hi Wall”, which shows a slightly different, peppier side of their collaboration. Ben’s earthy baritone and Vesper’s sweet, yet confident alto warmly combine on the forefront, backed by their ever-unusual and strangely danceable freak-pop arrangements. Ben explains it best below…
“My favorite thing in the world is to hear my songs in the hands of people I can trust. They do the necessary violence to my writing until something new emerges. It’s like an awkward teenager threshold right before the voice change, or a dog on a walk with a new owner. ‘Knee-Hi Wall’ was a stretch for me to record because it is an ancient song and I’m generally skittish about approaching old material. I never expected to make a disco-phonic/bloodhound-gang number, but that’s what happens when you let go of your own agenda in the studio surrounded by the likes of John Mosloskie, Steve Oyola, Josh Stamper and Sufjan Stevens. It’s wonderfully freeing.” – Ben Stamper

PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY OFFER FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD OF “GOING TO THE CASINO (TOMORROW NIGHT)”
TOO PURE RECORDS TO RELEASE SECOND SINGLE IN MAY 2010
Australia is shipping us more musical goodness thanks to Philadelphia Grand Jury. Two childhood friends, Berkfinger and MC Bad Genius, add some 20 years and one observes a strange, tedious and sometimes very complicated relationship that always manages to somehow end up in a smart and ruff pop song.
Berkfinger hadn’t seen Bad Genius for 6 years when one day last year the curious bearded fellow just strolled into one of his solo shows with a bass and plugged himself right back into the singer’s life. From there, these two childhood buddies – and a rotating ensemble of drummers – have been writing, recording and touring their own indie punk soul hits around the country and winning fans everywhere they go.
2009 was a busy year for The Philly Jays (as their fans affectionately refer to them as).Yet even amidst relentless touring they managed to squeeze out a self-produced, self-engineered and self-released hit EP on their own label called Normal People Making Hits, which remained in the top 10 of the independent charts for months after its Australian release. Similarly on the release their debut album Hope Is For Hopers, which went to number 1 on the charts. They were also handpicked by Kasabian & Franz Ferdinand to support them and became one of the most played artists on Australian radio.

Scotland’s Twin Atlantic will soon hit us stateside. The band will release their critically-raved album Vivarium in the US in early 2010. For such a young band, the group is making people take notice. They’ve slowly built up a presence overseas as one of the best new live bands. Scoring them opening spots in UK tours for the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Circa Survive, and Taking Back Sunday.
They’ve yet to officially tour the United States but were met with rave reviews at last year’s South By Southwest festival that put them on many music fan’s “must see” lists at this year’s CMJ Marathon.

Did you download your free and 100% legal copy of Nine Inch Nails’s The Slip yet? I just downloaded mine a few minutes ago. I don’t know why it took me so long to just go download it from the NIN site.
The greatest feature of downloading the album was actually before downloading it. A smart move on Trent’s half was offering multiple format options. Fans have the ability to choose from High Quality MP3, FLAC losseless, FLAC High Definition 24/96 (24bit/96kHZ audio), M4A Apple Lossless, and High Definition WAVE 24/96. Now that’s what I call shopping for music!
There are always the people who are against artists giving their music away for free. I think some artists need to realize music was devalued by the free-for-all Napster. It’s very hard to take something that was on the market for free, and still is, to value again. The industry won’t recover from that and everybody has to move on. When I say move on I mean lets come up with some solutions that benefit everybody. I know my wheels are always turning and already have ideas in the making.
I’ll review The Slip in a couple days…keep your eye out!
UPDATE: It’s funny I mentioned the formats that are available to download for the NIN album, here’s an article about the push for higher quality formats online.
