Get Your Soul to the Dance Floor with this Little Ditty!

Lauriana Mae
Love Mae EP
Released: 12/6/2011
Atlantic Records

Lauriana Mae Love Mae EP cover

Atlantic Recording artist Lauriana Mae is inspired by the likes of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James and fuses those big soulful sounds with a modern pop/R&B twist.  There is so much talent on the EP and it’s just Lauriana Mae with the assistance of producer Kwame (Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige).  She doesn’t just belt out the punching pop tunes, she also penned all the tracks.

The EP kicks off with “Money Mae,” which is her moniker, and is something I dare you not to sing along to.  ”Like a Drum (Beat It)” and “Love” are the other two tracks to make this EP’s cut.   “Like a Drum” stays with the same catchy beat as “Money Mae,” while “Love” is the smooth jazz ballad.  Even though Love Mae EP is only 3 tracks, it’s a well rounded introduction and there is no reason to not pick up this gem. This EP won’t touch your soul, it’ll grab it and toss it on the dance floor. Now we just have to wait for the full length album. You can pick it up on iTunes here for $2.99!

Taylor Momsen: From Gossip Girl to The Pretty Reckless

The Pretty Reckless featuring Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

Taylor Momsen The Pretty Reckless

When I heard Taylor Momsen was starting a singing career I kinda puked in my mouth. My thought, “Another cute actress that thinks she’s got the chops to sing…great!” (please note the sarcasm). It’s reality stars like Kim Kardasian that put that bad ‘actor turned singer’ taste in my mouth. Can you blame me? After I cleared the puke in my mouth and listened to the music, I realized she wasn’t half bad. Then she hit the stage over at Lollapalooza this summer to a packed crowd. Even thought we covered Lolla I didn’t get a chance to sneak to the stage to see her and now I am thinking maybe I should have tried harder.

The Pretty Reckless is currently opening for Evanescence on tour, another great sign for the band. The crowd loved her and quite frankly she’s not one to just stand on stage and sing. As in real life, Taylor steals the scenes and the stage. She was in constant motion, and she looked like a thrasher ballerina at times doing pirouettes. Taylor has the look to keep the male audience’s attention as she was in a white teddy with thigh-high white leather lace-up boots.  Can’t really get any sexier than Momsen was on Friday night.

They played their set that included the Audioslave cover “Like a Stone.”  It was touch and go with the cover, of course, I am a die-hard Chris Cornell fan and no one compares to him, so I am a little more critical of others covering his work. Taylor’s voice hit the chorus dead on, but when Chris goes low, he really goes low, and Taylor just doesn’t have that range.

Taylor’s The Pretty Reckless isn’t straight up pop.  Performing live, Momsen sounds like she’s channeling Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Linda Perry. It’s a very alternative pop sound. Now since Taylor Momsen essentially was pushed out of Gossip Girl, she decided to take The Pretty Reckless on full-time so definitely be on the lookout for more music and touring from The Pretty Reckless.

Peter Gabriel + Orchestra + Greatest Hits = NEW BLOOD out 10/11

PETER GABRIEL REINVENTS HIS GREATEST WORKS WITH NEW BLOOD ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 11TH // TRIUMPHANT NEW RECORDINGS PERFORMED BY THE NEW BLOOD ORCHESTRA

“New Blood – Live in London” Concert DVD Out October 25th

Peter Gabriel

“The orchestra provides different dimensions to the music that weren’t there initially. Rock artists work slowly in studios, building up layer by layer, and one of the great, powerful advantages of an orchestra is all these musicians playing at one moment with all sorts of colors and personalities.” - PETER GABRIEL

On the heels of a limited sold-out US summer tour that earned Peter Gabriel some of the best reviews of his career, he will release a full-length CD NEW BLOOD on October 11, 2011 distributed by EMI. A continuum to his recent Scratch My Back release, the NEW BLOOD album will feature some of Gabriel’s biggest hits from his prodigious career, reconstructed and re-imagined with orchestral arrangements and recorded live with the New Blood Orchestra. Gabriel hand-selected the songs and enlisted the help of longtime collaborator John Metcalfe for the arrangements and Ben Foster as conductor of the 46-piece New Blood Orchestra.

This treatment is applied with painstaking attention to detail and stunning effect to songs including ”Mercy Street”, ”Don’t Give Up”, ”Digging In The Dirt”, ”San Jacinto”, and the all-time classic ”Solsbury Hill”. The intention was not to simply rework Gabriel’s biggest songs, but rather, find songs that were enhanced by the massed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. ”Don’t Give Up” - now with Norwegian singer Ane Brun’s vulnerable, cracking vocals replacing those of Kate Bush - rides a stirring, uplifting coda. Where the twinkle of ”San Jacinto” was originally supplied by loops from a Fairlight sampler, piano and bows now provide the otherworldly magic. But probably the most extraordinary reinterpretation is that of ”Rhythm Of The Heat” where Metcalf has recast the original’s extended African drum jam into a dizzying, swirling orchestral maelstrom.

NEW BLOOD will be available as a standard single-disc and digital download. A special 2-CD version will include the standard album plus an added disc of instrument versions. There will additionally be a heavyweight vinyl version available November 8th that is released with a bonus 7″ featuring ”A Quiet Moment” and ”Solsbury Hill”). The filmed concert ”New Blood – Live in London”, recorded October 23rd, 2010 at the Hammersmith Apollo will be available in 3D, blu-ray and standard DVD on October 25th.

Not Shocking: Amy Winehouse Found Dead

There has been no official word from Amy’s camp. Many friends are taking their Facebook page and commenting “not surprised” as I posted a link of Amy’s death.

Amy Winehouse was 27 years old with an insane drug addiction.  In the back of my head I always wondered who would go first her or Lindsay Lohan. It looks like Amy “won”. At least she doesn’t have to struggle with her addiction anymore and hopefully is in a better place.

She was found dead at 4AM London time. One could guess of an apparent drug overdose, but too soon to tell.

Rest In Peace Amy!

People don’t screw around either, as a Wikipedia editor went ahead and placed her death date in her Wikipedia page!

Instant Pleasure with the House of Rufus

Rufus Wainwright released a massive boxset of his work entitled House of Rufus. This is a collection to behold for true Rufus fans as it is a limited release of 3,000 copies worldwide. Signed versions of the boxset with art canvases have already sold-out.  The boxset includes demos from his personal collection, which is what made him famous. There are also studio demos from Want One and Want Two. There are songs with “Family and Friends,” which includes a new version of Richard Thompson’s “Down Where the Drunkards Roll” recorded with his father, Loudon Wainwright III.  One of the discs in the set is compiled with all his movie soundtrack songs which is dubbed ‘Rufus at the Movies.’

The box set contains:

6 studio albums
2 concerts on CD, including Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall
4 discs of previously unreleased material
6 dvds

At approximately $296.85 (£184.99) the box set is cased in red velvet, would you expect anything else from the House of Rufus? There is a 90 page hardback book with rare and unseen photos, hand drawn tour posters, handwritten lyrics, 4 art prints and much more.  There are also interviews with his friends and relatives with an introduction by Rufus.

One of biggest highlights of the set is the “Family and Friends” disc.   It’s songs like “More Wine” with Julianna Raye and “To America” with Joan Wasser that that truly sum up the feel of the disc. The low-key acoustics and soothing voices of the very talented ladies make this the must have album for any California beach and wine parties.  While the Family and Friends disc is mainly filled with slow tempo to folksy music it’s a surprise live collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on “Casanova in Hell” that puts the cherry of the disc.

For those looking for the mainstream pop songs from Rufus, turn to ‘Rufus at the Movies.’  You don’t realize how many songs Rufus accumulated for the soundtracks until you see the tracklisting.  For the Rufus fans that want to hear the demos, aka the unreleased tracks, there is a treasure chest full of goodies for your ears.  I do recommend ripping the albums, once you’ve purchased them, on your computer and listening to all the tracks in alphabetical order.  By doing this you have a side by side comparison of the unreleased demos with the full album versions such as “11.11”.

The House of Rufus is the greatest hits collection for fans new and old.  With roughly 195 audio tracks the boxset will keep you occupied for over 2 hours. Mind you this doesn’t include the DVD footage! You can purchase House of Rufus here.

Rufus is currently taking up residency at the Royal Opera House in London for most of July  taking the stage with Britten Sinfonia, conducted by Stephen Oremus, for a revival of Rufus’ celebrated tribute to Judy Garland, Rufus Does Judy! Rufus Does Judy is also included on CD and DVD in the boxset. He then heads to the Midwest for a couple days and then to Canada.

Jennifer Hudson brings “Music, Love, Spirit, and Faith” to Ravinia

Jennifer Hudson
Ravinia Festival
Highland Park, IL

“Music, Love, Spirit, Faith”

Those are the words that Jennifer Hudson left imprinted in the minds of her fans who attended her sold out show at Ravinia. They can be used to accurately describe her heartfelt performance and latest album I Remember Me.

Jennifer Hudson has been through a lot emotionally in the past few years and it definitely reflects in her voice. She sings from within; staying true to every lyric, melody, and every song she sings.

She commanded the stage the minute she stepped out, singing “Feeling Good.” The reaction of the audience was one of amazement. I could overhear so many fans commenting on how amazing she looked. Yet aside from her looks, Jennifer has always been known for her belting voice.  From singing “No one Gonna Love You” to “Where you at” she made it look so effortless. She also sang few singles from her debut album and from Dreamgirls. As well as a duet to Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There” accompanied by her friend and formal idol singer George Huff.

There were many moments throughout her performance where you could feel her spirit and emotion. They were evidently apparent during her performance of “I Remember Me.” It was one of her strongest moments of the show and she even received a standing ovation from the audience as she gracefully shed a few tears after getting very emotional. Her album and single “I remember Me” reflect the hardships she’s been through in her past but stays on a positive note reminding us that we can get through anything.

Throughout her performance I was secretly wishing to hear “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going.” I felt slight disappointment as she ended her set with  “Spotlight.” Yet, as the audience was slowly exiting the venue; those of us who chanted for an encore got our wish. An amazing show ended memorably with a dynamic performance of “And I am Telling you I’m Not Going.”

From Idol, to Dreamgirls, to a successful solo career. Jennifer Hudson knows to stay true to her roots by always remembering who she is.

Amos Lee at Dave Matthews Caravan Chicago

Amos Lee
Dave Matthews Caravan
Chicago, IL – Lakeside

All photos by Dan DeSlover at Concert Capture

Amos Lee was the first big name act to kick off Dave Matthews Caravan here in Chicago. This is the first time any concert has been staged in the old steel mill yards, which is dubbed Lakeside.  The crowd couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day and speaking of beautiful, Amos dedicated his last song in his set to the lovely ladies he’s seen at the festival.  What song you may ask? It was Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls.”  It was a hit along with the rest of the set.  He even performed a Frankie Valley song to set the beach-like atmosphere. Although Lake Michigan is just a block away and in view, they’ve blocked access for obvious reasons. The biggest one is Dave Matthews fans like to drink to obliteration and alcohol plus a large body of water don’t mix.

Ben Sollee (southern) charms Music Hall of Williamsburg

Uniquely placed in a burgeoning indie atmosphere of non-traditional artists, cellist Ben Sollee transcends genres jumping from classical to indie pop to soul to traditional Americana blue grass. On Wednesday evening, Ben hit the stage of the Music Hall of Williamsburg, with violinist Phoebe Hunt and percussionist extraordinaire Jordan Ellis, to the delight of his fans.

Ben played tracks from his latest album Inclusions, including “Close To You”, “Captivity”, “Electrified” and “Bible Belt”.   For the latter, Ben strapped on the electric guitar and provided an introduction to the aptly titled tune where this Kentucky boy grew up.  He described the signs that pepper his home, but couldn’t bring himself to recount what the signs exactly said.  The audience had no problem imagining what they proclaimed.  You can listen to these tracks and all of Inclusions in its entirety at bandcamp.

Though Ben didn’t pull out his “Change Is Gonna Come” cover, he enamored this Sam Cooke fan by interweaving “Good Times” into his rendtion of “It’s Not Impossible”.  Other tracks he played from his Learning To Bend album were “How To Watch A Sunrise”,  “Bury Me With My Car” and “Built For This”.  For BFT, what seemed to be a drunken fan request turned out to be one of the most enduring moments of the night.  A gentleman exclaimed we were married to that song.  How could Ben deny that?  He obliged with a  caveat -  only if they danced. Of course they did, along with several couples in the center of the floor after some coaxing from Ben.

As the evening neared its closing, Ben became thoughtful placing his de-fogged spectacles back on.  He spoke of his contribution, “The Wires” to Patagonia Music and how the proceeds of the track’s purchase went to a cause close to his heart, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.  The organization rallies local communities to battle mountaintop coal removal in the Appalachian region. It was fitting that Ben encored with “Only A Song” as the crowd sang along “But it’s only a song, it can’t change the world”.  Lesson of the night – be the change that you want to see in the world.  Amen!  To top it all off, Ben covered Cat Stevens  “Wild World” a thrilling end of all ends to send us off in the night.

Josh Groban Receives Glowing Reviews for Current “Straight To You” Tour

“The Concert Felt Like a House Party in a Really Big, Well-Lit House” – New Orleans Times Picayune; “Straight To You” Continues Through November in North America

BURBANK, CA–(Marketwire – May 24, 2011) – On May 12th, Josh Groban launched the North American leg of his 2011 “Straight To You” World Tour and is receiving some of the best reviews of his career. With a set designed by the award-winning British multi-media creative and digital agency Knifedge, which has pioneered the use of projection with live theater events, the tour gives fans the feeling of an intimate theater setting through stage design, lighting, and projection, as well as through the spontaneity and interactivity Groban delighted his fans with during last year’s “Before We Begin” shows. Groban is not only performing an ever-changing set-list of fan favorites from his best-selling albums and his recent platinum-seller Illuminations, he is also taking questions from the audience via text, which concert-goers are given instructions on how to send before and during each show.

Read what the critics have had to say so far about “Straight To You”….

“Groban’s genuine boy-next-door demeanor in the midst of violins, french horns, percussion, cello, piano, guitars, bass and drums makes him and his music all the more endearing. He appears truly comfortable performing, like it’s his second home.” - The Dallas Morning News

“Listening to Groban’s commanding tenor navigate ‘Oceano’ and ‘Alla Luce,’ for example, was to us the same as admiring a painting at the Museum of Fine Arts — it wasn’t necessary to understand the lyrics to understand the song. … Sometimes beauty, in and of itself, can be both motive and reward. And regardless of the context you’re coming from, it can be pretty inspirational, too.” - Houston Press

“Groban has boyish charm that belies his big voice. If you want to dismiss him as popera, be my guest; but do take a moment to listen to his voice sometime, just for its qualities and tone, and tell me it doesn’t draw you in.” -Dallas Voice

“Impeccable vocals, wit, make Groban concert memorable. Groban proved to be quite the showman, but his vocals truly made the show memorable. He managed to belt powerful and enunciated lyrics, then quickly switch to a soothing falsetto. Few performers have the ability to perform that way live without a hitch.” - Wichita Eagle

“That had been one of the purposes of the stage set created for his ‘Straight To You’ tour — to allow for more interaction between Groban and his fans, whether it be answering questions audience members could text in before the show or getting down among the adoring. But it’s simply the case of a talented artist putting his instrument to its best and most effective use. And Groban sings with such obvious emotion and sincerity — not to mention skill — that it’s difficult not to be won over.” - Tulsa World

As a nod to his devoted student fans of all ages, Groban is offering tickets for $25 to anyone who presents a valid student i.d. at the venue’s box office. Tickets for all shows are on sale now. All remaining dates are listed below. For more information, please visithttp://www.joshgroban.com/tour.

“EMPRESS OF SOUL” TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL TRAIN DAY

Singer, Actress and Philanthropist Gladys Knight Joins Amtrak in

Celebrating National Train Day

LAS VEGAS – Nearly four decades after her No. 1 hit, “Midnight Train to Georgia” captured the nation’s imagination, GRAMMY®-winning vocalist Gladys Knight will share her love of trains and join Amtrak in its 40th anniversary year to celebrate National Train Day 2011. National Train Day, Saturday, May 7, commemorates the 142nd anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s inception by bringing to life the rich history of how the railroad industry and train travel transformed America.

Ms. Knight will serve as national spokesperson and host the signature event at Washington, D.C.’s acclaimed Union Station where she will open the festivities.

Some of the signature events to celebrate National Train Day 2011 are as follows:

  • Midnight Train to Georgia…and Washington, D.C.…and Los Angeles: National Train Day is being celebrated all across America with signature events happening in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, D.C. and Chicago. National Train Day festivities will kick off on May 5 at the Rock’n the Rail Way concert headlined by Gladys Knight at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

  • Not Just Monopoly: While many know the B&O railroad from a simple board game, its rail history stretches back to the Civil War. From the Chinese-American to the California Missions contributions, train travel continues to play in America’s history. The nationwide tour of Amtrak’s 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train will launch in Washington, D.C. on May 7. The exhibit will feature two locomotives and three renovated baggage cars displaying Amtrak memorabilia, as well as information about the history and future of passenger rail.

  • For Kids Young and Old: National Train Day is an event that promises to delight the kid in you no matter what your age. From train tours and model train displays to live culinary demonstrations and a gigantic birthday party for Amtrak in the AmtraKids Depot.

SXSW Schedule Round-up

It’s that time of year again where everybody and their brother who is in music, film, and technology flocks to Austin, Texas for “business.” I say business loosely because I haven’t heard much business going down as much as I’ve heard of the insane parties such as the one Cathy Brooks hosted that had Chris Cornell on stage performing. That’s my kind of party.

I digress, are you headed to SXSW this year?  Here’s a list of some of the artists that are scheduled to perform.  I’ve highlighted our favorites over here at the Dead Hub that you must check out.

Free Download of I’ll Be Waiting by Michael Franti

To celebrate the release of his new single, “I’ll Be Waiting,” Michael Franti is offering fans the opportunity to download it for FREE. Head toMichaelFranti.com or Facebook.com/MichaelFranti to download. You can also check out the powerful lyrics of “I’ll Be Waiting”  (Radio Edit Mix) in a brand new lyric video.

“I’ll Be Waiting” has special meaning to Franti who describes it as “an epic and vast song about intensely personal experiences.” Below are Franti’s personal thoughts on the song and what it means to him.

“At its core it is a love song, but not in the classic sense of the phrase.

It is a song of searching, failure, growth and healing.

It is a love song between a friend who is addicted to heroin and his lover who is desperately waiting for him to clean up.

It is a love song for a single mother who has just seen her teenage daughter run away to the city, only to come home pregnant and alone.

It is a love song  for an over-demanding father who’s son has gone off to war only to come home broken with scars inside and out.

It is a love song for a bus driver who spends his whole day helping others only to come home to his wife who is battling cancer.

It is a love song for a child who is bullied at school and one day snaps and is now calling his mother from juvenile detention.

It is a song about leaving home and searching for ourselves outside of our “selves” in the material world.

Buying the right car to make us look important, the right jeans to make us slimmer, the right friends to make us more special, the right drugs to make us more confident, the right lover to fix that part of us that is empty.

Inevitably all these things fail and as we fall on our faces we come to discover those that we rebelled against the most, were the people who had faith in us even when we were at our worst…”Whenever you call me, whenever you need me, wherever you wander, until you see me, I’ll be Waiting, waiting for you…”   With open arms to catch us, hold us, heal us… even when we think we are not worthy of it.”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of “Cold Spring Harbor.” Not a lot of pop/rock music lovers even know that it was that album by a very young Billy Joel that would pave the way for millions of records sold and countless sold-out shows and (more recently) hours of entertainment on TMZ.

“Cold Spring Harbor” (an incredible album by the way) was followed by “Piano Man’ and from there the doors flew up for a guy who once played on a Shangri La’s demo of “Leader of the Pack” and “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” as an unknown session guy in 1964. He was 15-years old. [Read more...]
