Her voice is salty – sweet – easy on ears as honey on the tongue. Her name is Lilly Schaffer and her disc “Lemonade” is just what it sounds like – a little complex – a little delicious – and completely refreshing.
Schaffer comes out of the gate like a sepia chanteuse spinning her ancient musical yarns through her own neo-modern filter. By the end of “Lemonade” we are slowly seduced into the singer/songwriter world of the 21st century.
“Lemonade” is a collection of smart – well-crafted songs by this veteran of Chicago’s open mic scene. She explores the standard questions of love and identity – but does so with wit and warmth meted out carefully so as to not distract from the music.

The Constellations reap accolades
“Southen Gothic” released
Summer tours heating up
Atlanta’s latest export – The Constellations – are bringing their southern style – and their “Southern Gothic” to a town near you this summer. Their touring plans have them criss- crossing the country spreading joy and music with reckless abandon.
I caught up with lead singer Elijah Jones recently between stops to get a handle on the band that has evolved and solidified into a tight touring unit – a group so tight they can recreate much the intricately nuanced “Southern Gothic” live on stage.
“We are touring with eight members which allows us to recreate a lot of the album,” Jones said.“Still some of the songs have to be reinterpreted.” [Read more…]
Donn T is her own woman. She describes herself as “authentic”. She grew up in a very musical family on the East Coast. Her father and mother are both recording artists and her brother is GuestLove from the hip hop band The Roots.
Her debut album, Kaleidoscopic, drops July 12th. The album is a fusion of multiple genres from house music, dance, pop, and soul. The Dead Hub recently caught up with Ms. Donn T to talk business, Kalediscopic, and tells her tale of writing for rapper Common.
The Dead Hub: Where in the world is Donn T at today? MySpace lists several locations.
Donn T: Yeah I just depends on the week. (laughs) I am bicoastal, as in the United States. LA and Philadelphia. I spend 1/3 of my time in LA, 1/3 UK, and 1/3 Philadelphia.
I’ve written for TV and film, which is why I am in Los Angeles. My label and management are in the UK. I have a very interesting life. I have meetings that I have to take at 10am UK time and I have to be alert. 10 AM UK time is 4 am Philly time. My publicist is in New York and at the moment I am in Philadelphia. [Read more…]
Vic Theatre – Chicago, IL
The Belly Up Tavern – Solana Beach, CA
The house is packed for this former American Idol. He’s in town for his starring role in the Grease musical which is currently in San Diego and will continue to hit the West Coast until the end of May. Not only is Taylor making his way around the country with Grease but he’s also out promoting his newest release that will drop March 10th title The Distance. you may be hearing his newest single of The Distance called “What’s Right is Right.”
The audience is on the older side compared to most concerts that I attend. I would say it was also an even split of males and females. I was sitting next to a group of very vocal older women. I am talking these ladies were in their 60’s or 70’s. It appeared that there were generations of women there too. For example, mom, daughter, and grandma would be in packs in the audience. I would say Taylor Hicks would make a great family outing, but too bad this show was 21+. FYI: Taylor Hicks drink Budweiser.
I have a confession to make, I didn’t watch American Idol when Taylor was on it. I almost wish I did, but on the other hand, I have this clean perspective on him. He is a very talented performer, and he also has that natural ability to woo women in the audience. I know this because I was very taken with him. He also has an abundance of energy. He didn’t really stop moving which is probably due to the Grease musical training.

The album will be released on Hicks’ Modern Whomp Records label and distributed through a partnership with independent artist services company Artist To Market (A2M). Robert Randolph on Music Builds Tour 2008
Cricket Wireless – Chula Vista, CA
Robert Randolph – pedal steel
Danyel Morgan – bass
Marcus Randolph – drums
Jason Crosby – organ, piano, violin
We went to the Music Builds Tour to cover Jars of Clay, but we came out a fan of Robert Randolph. Before we walked through the gates of the Crickets Wireless in Chula Vista, people were a buzz with Robert Randolph, saying he was the one to watch tonight. I hadn’t heard of him until that day at Cricket.
Robert Randolph is dubbed as the American Funk band. He plays the pedal steel guitar, and I must say the man plays it like it was a part of him. He also is joined by family memebers such as his cousin Marcus on drums and he brought his sister out for some backing vocal support.
His music is insanely contagious and had everybody on their feet dancing. Robert was even kind enough to teach us how to do a little dance that he’s been doing for ages. The songs are epically long and I would usually have a problem with that, except his songs are good and catchy. My favorite is “Ain’t Nothing Wrong with That.” If you go to his MySpace and hear the song, it’s super energtic. Now imagine that song having 10 times more soul in it….that’s Robert and the Family live. The music comes out and grabs you.
