The Lollapalooza Lowdown!

coldplay lollapaloozaLollapalooza starts tomorrow and we have the lowdown!

2012 tickets sold out in records time, 71 days prior to the event, but those who didn’t score the coveted tickets can stream the show at http://youtube.com/lollapalooza. Live streams and interviews will be available for Jack White, AVICII, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Ocean, The Shins, Florence + The Machine, and more.

Something cool this year is the stand-alone LollaShop.  The Shop is open to the public through August 6th and has Lollapalooza merchandise and merch from Sony, Goorlin Bros. Hats, Baggu plus many more.  The LollaShop is located Thompson Hotel and the Lounge will host events and artist appearances, and yoga.  Make sure to reserve a spot by RSVPing at http://do312.com/lollashop.

When there is just too much to carry, State Farm is providing a bag check. This is free and located west of Buckingham Fountain.

Lolla + Instagram + Free WIFI

This year Lollapalooza is having bands and fans Instagram photos showing up on the jumbotron around the stages.  Remember to tag all Lollapalooza photos this weekend in Instagram with #lolla.  Don’t use Instagram? iPhone and Android photos also show up in the Lollapalooza mobile app that is available for free on Google Play and iTunes.

To assist in uploading all those Instagram photos, Lolla is providing FREE WIFI around the park.  There will be hotspots near Buckingham Fountain, Lederhosen’s Biergarten, Uncorked Win Lounge, all Lolla Lounges, and more.  The network to select is “2012 Lolla.”

What’s Allowed and Not Allowed in the Park

Since it’s been hot around Chicago and the Midwest, festivals such and Summerfest and now Lollapalooza are allowing patrons to bring in 2 SEALED bottles into the festival.  Also allowed is an empty, refillable bottle.  There will be commemorative CamelBak water bottles and packs at merch booths.  The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic containers in the park with partners Boxed Water and Vita Coco Coconut Water.

Along with the sealed bottles the following items are ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Blankets, Sheets, Towels

Umbrellas (ONLY Hand-Held)

Soft-Sided Coolers

Baby Strollers

Binoculars

Non-Professional Recording Equipment (Point & Shoot Cameras, Flip Video Cameras, etc.)

The following items are NOT ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Weapons of Any Kind, including Fireworks or Explosives of Any Kind

Illegal or Illicit Substances of Any Kind

Outside Food or Drinks (including Alcohol), except Two Factory-Sealed Water Bottles (up to 1 Liter each)

Skateboards, Scooters or Personal Motorized Vehicles

Bicycles Inside Festival Grounds (Plenty Bike Racks are available near The Box Office).

Carts, Tents & Chairs of Any Kind

Hard-Sided Coolers

Pets (except Service Dogs)

Professional Recording (Photo, Video, Audio) Equipment (NO Detachable Zoom Lense, Tripods or Other Commerical Equipment

No Unauthorized/Unlicensed Vendors Allowed. No Unauthorized Solicitations, Handbills, Sampling, Give-Aways, etc.

The FOOD

For the newcomers to Lolla the food is plentiful and diverse.  Chef Graham Elliot returned as the Culinary Ambassador to oversee the food is top notch.

Not everyone eats meat and besides having some great choices from food vendors, there is also the return of the Farmers Market. The Farmers Market will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free patrons.

Activities

Lollapalooza started with showcasing music, but today Lollapalooza has much more to experience than just music.

Green Workshops

In conjunction with the Farmers Market, there will be brief urban gardening workshops provided by Compass Green. These workshops support education in low-income schools.  These workshops are at the south end of Green Street each day of Lolla at 1p.m.

Kidzapalooza

For those who are bringing the kids along there is Kidzapalooza.  Kids 10 and under enter the festival within Lolla for free.  It has its own stage and interactive games from Rock Star Video Karaoke to hip-hop workshops with the Q Brothers. Face painting is also taken to a whole other level as kids are transformed into rock stars and get a photo shoot all glammed up.

Do312 Celebrity Kickball

For the 3rd year running, DO312 put together a stellar line-up for the game that takes place Saturday morning at 11:15a.m.  at the north end of the festival by the Red Bull Soundstage.  This year’s celebrities include Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Chef Guy Fieri, Ryan Cabrera, Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, Chris Holmes, Greg Corner, Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Paradise, Dave Ziebarth, Kaylee DeFer from Gossip Girl.

Moby Destroyed

Got sleep issues? Try Moby’s newest release “Destroyed” (on Little Idiot Records). If this collection of self-indulgent faux-soundtrack cuts doesn’t put you to sleep – you might need serious medical help.

This has to be the only album in existence that makes lush string arrangements sound boring and monotone. There is nothing here that I can hang my ears on. What Moby has released is him and a computer making navel-gazing music that would even annoy the most jaded navel gazer.

There are moments of sweetness, (“The Violet Bear It Away”) but they quickly erode into repetitive droning musical ideas. He – who could have really demolished preconceived notions and pioneered the genre – relies on loops and cheese-ball edits to try to elicit an emotion from the listener.

Most of what he has created here sounds like the soundtrack to a sad European movie where it is always raining and someone dies and there is a lot of slo-mo running alone through the crowded streets of the city.

The most frustrating part of listening to this disc is some of the ideas truly are beautiful. Some of the chord progressions tap into something medieval and powerful – but rather than follow the idea to a logical conclusion – he (for the most part) just loops it back around into itself.

“Stella Maris” is an exception and – actually – almost reason to buy this disc. If you can legally download this one cut – I strongly suggest it. Moby finds a way to blend ancient spirituality into the full-bodied strings and the reed-thin computer generated arrangements.

If the whole disc was as amazing – revelatory – as “Stella Maris” Moby would have a new fan. Sadly there is nothing on the disc that is even in the ballpark. Legally download this cut and leave the rest of this disc to the hardcore fans who will accept everything he records, because they are – well – hardcore fans.

Lollapalooza’s 20th Birthday Is Coming!!!!

Oh how Lollapalooza has grown! It’s amazing how a farewell show for Jane’s Addiction could manifest into a growing mass of 115+ acres of multiple stages showcasing 130-something artists, festival grounds filled with farmers markets, hosting local gourmet fair, and enough arts and crafts to make your head spin! SXSW Schedule Round-up

It’s that time of year again where everybody and their brother who is in music, film, and technology flocks to Austin, Texas for “business.” I say business loosely because I haven’t heard much business going down as much as I’ve heard of the insane parties such as the one Cathy Brooks hosted that had Chris Cornell on stage performing. That’s my kind of party.

I digress, are you headed to SXSW this year?  Here’s a list of some of the artists that are scheduled to perform.  I’ve highlighted our favorites over here at the Dead Hub that you must check out.

Keep in mind this is not a full list of performers, please check back for updates!

On “Love You Back” – the latest from singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan – the too-young-to-feel-this-old songbird warbles a piece she co-wrote called “Famous.” A well blended orchestral pop nugget with one of the coolest guitar bits buried in the melancholy conclusion, the song fairly warns of what is to come for Philly native who stretches musical borders to their breaking point. There is something “emperor’s-new-clothes” about this duo and this disc. It seems like there is less going on musically, but what is going on is executed with a flourish that draws you in only to let you down.

Perhaps because it is all packaged and delivered with such obvious arrogance and pretension that listening to it was like so much smoke and mirrors. Perhaps because it is a compilation that retools older material for release that it seems dishonest. [Read more…]

Donn T talks Music Business, Kalediscopic, and rapper Common

Donn T
Kaleidoscopic
Release: 7/12/2010
Label: MoreAboutMusic

Donn T is her own woman. She describes herself as “authentic”. She grew up in a very musical family on the East Coast. Her father and mother are both recording artists and her brother is GuestLove from the hip hop band The Roots.

Her debut album, Kaleidoscopic, drops July 12th.  The album is a fusion of multiple genres from house music, dance, pop, and soul.  The Dead Hub recently caught up with Ms. Donn T to talk business, Kalediscopic, and tells her tale of writing for rapper Common.

The Dead Hub: Where in the world is Donn T at today? MySpace lists several locations.

Donn T: Yeah I just depends on the week. (laughs) I am bicoastal, as in the United States. LA and Philadelphia. I spend 1/3 of my time in LA, 1/3 UK, and 1/3 Philadelphia.

I’ve written for TV and film, which is why I am in Los Angeles. My label and management are in the UK. I have a very interesting life. I have meetings that I have to take at 10am UK time and I have to be alert. 10 AM UK time is 4 am Philly time. My publicist is in New York and at the moment I am in Philadelphia. [Read more…]

D3 – DECONSTRUCT DISCOVER DETROIT – ART & MUSIC SERIES FEATURES MONTY LUKE ON JUNE 25

D3 – DECONSTRUCT DISCOVER DETROIT – ART & MUSIC SERIES FEATURES MONTY LUKE ON JUNE 25

The second edition of D3 – Deconstruct Discover Detroit – Art & Music Series comes to Smart bar on Friday, June 25, 2010. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of techno, Chicago DJ Lady D, inspired by the connection of Detroit Techno and Chicago House, has put together an art and music series, D3. D3, championed by the D’Lectable Music label, promoter Volatl and artist collective Prak-sis, will reflect the history, esteem and future of the Detroit techno sound. Smart Bar is the exclusive host this quarterly series, and if the first edition in March is any indication, June, October and December are sure to be events to remember as well.

June’s D3 event will feature music from Monty Luke, Frederick Zahm and DJ Lady D. Art curated by the Prak-sis artists collective will adorn Smart Bar, reflecting the multimedia intersection of music and art. Tickets are $10 before midnight, $13 after. Smart Bar text message subscribers will receive $5 admission before 11pm. This event is 21 & over and starts at 10pm.
