12 Acts to Watch at Lollapalooza in 2012

Lolla 2012 Santigold Sharon Van Etten Dev

It’s been awhile since a festival has seen this much speculation about its line-up.  Lollapalooza’s line-up was “leaked” twice before the actual announcement come down the pipe from Lollapalooza.  The first was a Twitter hoax and the second came just a few days ago with a nice visual of the full line-up for 2012.  As the second leak appeared online the chatter spun into high gear.  The talk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing in Chicago and Milwaukee so close to Lollapalooza was brought up in defense of how “off” the leak had to be.  Also no one could believe that Black Sabbath would play a show without Bill Ward, and possibly, Tony Iommi due to his cancer.  Yet some people forget that Black Sabbath is probably getting paid a pretty penny to be a headliner and I am going to gander that Black Sabbath didn’t reunite because they thought of some killer new material to perform.  It all comes down to money and if Bill Ward won’t play they will find someone else to, and if Tony can’t make it, the same will happen.

Aside from the conversation above, people aren’t exactly salivating at the mouth about the line-up, as it was very apparent on Lolla’s Facebook page when the leaks began and started to be confirmed.  The thing is The Black Keys just played Chicago and hit Milwaukee May 16th, Florence + The Machine is set to play Milwaukee at the end of April, and as previously stated, The Red Hot Chili Peppers is playing dates in Chicago close to Lolla.  That being said, there isn’t much of a draw for the Midwest as most of the headliners have or will hit the area relatively close to Lolla time.  It would be nice if Lolla announced a really large act that would be more of a draw, and the one thing missing from the line-up is the hip hop/rap act.  It was starting to be a staple of the fest for a couple years running, but it looks like Coachella took that thunder this year.  Heck even Summer Camp snagged Common.

So why go? There are so many talent acts performing that it’s not even funny.  Here’s our list of the 12 non-headlining acts that are sure to grab attention at Lollapalooza.

Dev – Pop/Dance

She likes her bass down low…really:

Her debut album, The Night the Sun Came Up, is currently available for download.

Metric -Pop/Rock

We’ve covered them through the years and still can’t get enough!

SYNTHETICA, their follow-up to Fantasies, is set to be released on June 12, 2012 right in time for fans to memorize the album and sing along at Lollapalooza.

Gold Guns Girls

Expecting To Fly

Santigold – Pop/Dance

Another artist to be stoked about is Santigold. She’s been around since 2008 and is about to drop her newest album Master of My Make Believe May 1st.

fun. -Pop

It’s all in their name. The band is also having a great year with their newest single “We Are Young” sitting at the #1 spot of Billboard.

We Are Young ft. Janelle Monáe

Dawes – Soul/Americana

Their newest album, Nothing is Wrong, was released back on June 7, 2011 and they’ve been touring since.
When the weather decides to turn up the heat at Lollapalooza, take to the Dawes set to sit back, relax, and enjoy.

If I Wanted Someone

Die Antwoord – Rap

Die Antwoord is an acquired taste with their imagery, but their set will be something to behold!  Their sophomore release, Tension, dropped back in February.

I Fink U Freeky

Bloc Party – Pop/Rock

They are back from their hiatus and hitting the road which includes Lollapalooza. For a great dance party:

One More Chance

Passion Pit –Indie/Electro-Pop

These guys have been around for years (as long as we have) and rightfully earned all the praise they’ve received.  Anticipate a huge crowd when they hit the stage this summer in Chicago as this their catchy electro-pop sound will keep the crowd on their feet.  The band is still riding high on their 2010 release of Manners.

Band of Skulls -Indie Rock

Watch this band hit it really big after Lollapalooza! The band’s newest release Sweet Sour was released back on Valentine’s Day.

Sweet Sour

Yellow Ostrich – Indie Rock

Indie Rock newcomers, Yellow Ostrich, spent 2011 touring and making their mark on the US with their newest release, Strange Land.  This year catch their infectious harmonies at Lolla.

Sharon Van Etten – Indie Folk/Rock

This lady is a busy woman! She’ll be spending the majority of 2012 on tour with some support from The War on Drugs. Her indie rock vibe is a must-see at Lolla especially if you didn’t get in to her slew of sold-out performances.

Laura Warshauer (pronounced War-Shower) – Pop/Singer/Songwriter

Jay-Z saw her perform at a Grammy after party and told her that “You are fantastically talented.” Enough said.

Tonight Tonight

SafetySuit Dekalb IL Convocation Center NIU

SafetySuit is riding high with their sophomore album hitting the #1 spot on iTunes the week of its release.   This pop/rock band from Tennessee also is celebrating their current spot as opener for Daughtry on the Break the Spell 2012 tour.

SafetySuit Dekalb IL Convocation Center NIULast night was the second stop opening for Daughtry as they hit the Convocation Center on the NIU campus.  The show took place in the arena that isn’t ideal for concerts.  Part of me feels pretty bad for SafetySuit as it took the crowd a while to warm up to them.  This is no knock to the band as they were amazing. I blame it more on the venue as the sound bounced around and made fans feel like they were in a less intimate space than they actually were.  I hope for future gigs on this tour the show gets a backdrop on the stage to help provide a solution to that sound problem, as the empty seats behind the stage only made the sound worse.  For that, I feel bad for the guys as it took the crowd to the tail end of their set to get off their feet and give back the energy the band was feeding the crowd.

SafetySuit’s “These Times” Music Video

The highlight of the set was their current single, “These Times,” where the music video is a compilation of fan submitted videos portraying their own hard times. The prelude to the song was Douglas sending out a message to those who are currently enduring tough circumstances, “These times are hard but they will pass.” Also a strong point of the night was the cover of “Hallelujah.”  It was after “Hallelujah” when Douglas jumped off stage and was in the pit serenading the front rows.  This is when the crowd started to get on their feet, as Douglas also reminded those in the arena that this was, in fact, a rock show.  It also didn’t take long for Douglas to leave the pit and greet fans with floor seats.  He really knows how to get the crowd pumped.

The set ended with “Stay,” one of the songs that helped launch their career.  It’s just too bad it took the crowd so long to catch the goodness SafetySuit was giving as the crowd was left wanting more.

Magic Milk’s New Video and Tour Dates

Magic Milk Tour Poster

Magic Milk is a garage/rock band from Chicago and they are headed out on the road! The tour starts on Saturday with dates that include a stop in Austin, TX at SXSW. The tour wraps up in Champaign, IL at Mike N Molly’s on the 18th. Check out their newest video where the band trashed a VFW hall below:

“Hopefully this didn’t cause any terrible flashbacks for any of those swell veterans hanging out that night. Magic Milk seem to have a unique knack for riling up even thee shittiest of crowds. Tonight was no exception, though we were all ready for a party regardless. This was a particularly wild one. Chris Kramer joined in on guitar. The ol’ sit and jump played out with a crowd surf, and a rather nasty ending. Oh, and whoever threw that giant condom filled pinata at us at 3:28, you suck. ‘Twas a hell of a shot, though. Second camera by the wonderful Mark Ciarleglio.”

Young the Giant The Rave Milwaukee Wisconsin

Young the Giant is riding high on a huge success of their second single “Cough Syrup” off their 2010 self-titled release. Another high note for the band was Fox’s hit show Glee covering  “Cough Syrup” in their latest episode.  The band is also set to play on one of the hottest music festivals this summer, Bonnaroo, as well as the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama. Their latest headlining tour is sold-out with the support of Walk the Moon. Thus, 2012 is looking good for this alternative rock band from Irvine, California.

Young the Giant The Rave Milwaukee WisconsinLast night at the Rave was very interesting. This was the first time I’ve seen Young the Giant live after hearing the chatter about “Cough Syrup.”  It’s pretty bad of me because these guys have been around since 2004 and were formerly known as The Jakes. They sure know how to make an incredible first impression and one of the things I noticed was the amazing lighted backdrop on stage; it illuminated the stage setting the tone for the show.  There were hanging lanterns along with stands of exposed light bulbs that dominated the back of the stage.  The real surprising thing I noticed was how many fans, young ones, in attendance smoked pot.  That’s all I smelled as soon as the first song was over.  It was unexpected and slightly funny because just a couple weeks before Megadeth and Motorhead were at the Rave and that very familiar scent was not present.  For Young the Giant to be playing Bonnaroo just seems more appropriate than ever.

“My Body” Music Video

I can dig Young the Giant because they are a cross between Coldplay and Kings of Leon. At times  Sameer’s vocals even reminded me of Jim Morrison from the Doors.  He has such a strong vocal presence that trumps many of the other bands in the alternative rock genre.  As mentioned above the hanging lights from the back of the stage lit up the band and created a surreal vibe for their alternative rock sound.

This is the time to catch them before they hit it really big. Tour dates and photos from their set below.

Walk the Moon Winning Over Fans

Walk the Moon The Rave Milwaukee Wisconsin

Walk the Moon hails from Cincinnati, Ohio and was pleased to be in the Midwest last night opening for Young the Giant at the Rave in Milwaukee. They are out promoting their recently released EP, Anna Sun, off RCA Records.   They list themselves as indie/visual/lyrical band on their Facebook Page yet those categories don’t begin to capture the true essence of the band.

Walk the Moon The Rave Milwaukee WisconsinLet’s talk about the how they call themselves a visual band.  Not knowing who this fine group of gentlemen was before tonight, I read visual as in Pink Floyd visual with the whole light show and such.  Walk the Moon didn’t have any fancy lighting, but they didn’t need it as they are the visual aspect that they mention.   Lead singer, Nicholas Petricca, is a triple threat takes on lead vocals, keys, and even percussion.  The drama of the band comes from Nicholas switching from keys, drums, and alternating mics.  Also the band exudes a party energy onstage with lots of jumping  and how can I forget the face paint?

Walk the Moon fans stood out from the rest as they would walk by with painted faces.  Bonnaroo documented the band prepping for their set last year.  The band aims to bring out their inner child at every show and one part of that is painting their faces and in this particular case they guys take to the crowd to paint fan’s faces. Watch the video below:

Last night’s show was a great gift to my ears.  The sound was not overwhelming to my ears even though they had Sean Waugaman on his drum kit and Nicholas beating his drum next to his mic.  It was a first time in a while where I took out my earplugs to enjoy the band.  Each band member also had their own microphone, which is sometimes scary because some musicians just can’t or shouldn’t sing.  Walk the Moon shocked me as each member of the band hit the mic and beautiful harmonies were piped through the speakers.  They must be a production engineer’s dream as their pitch was right on.

Nicholas mentioned that he wants the band to achieve the success that Young the Giant has made for themselves.  The thing is, last night Walk the Moon killed it and could hold their own as a headliner.  They had the crowd engaged by the second song clapping right along with their music and the beating drum. I couldn’t tell that I was watching an opening band as the energy was high and won over the audience at the Rave.

Eye Empire’s Moment of Impact at the Brat Stop

Eye Empire
The Brat Stop – Kenosha, WI

Eye Empire The Brat Stop Kenosha Wisconsin

Have you ever witnessed a band live and thought to yourself, “Wow, these guys are going to be big?”  That’s what ran through my head last night as Eye Empire hit the stage at the Brat Stop in Kenosha.  Who is Eye Empire?  The band is composed of four very talented gentlemen. On bass is Corey Lowery. Sound familiar? Corey used to be in Stuck Mojo, Stereomud, and Dark New Day, and he also is the brother to Clint Lowery from this lil’ metal band called Sevendust. Heard of them? I thought so. Then there is B.C. Kochmit on guitar formerly from Switched, and Donald Carpenter who used to sing lead vocals for Submersed.  The guys had a small problem as Morgan Rose from Sevendust played drums for them on their album; they had to find someone who could fill those shoes live and take over drums completely. They found Ryan Bennett from Texas Hippie Coalition, who is an insane talent on drums; no filler all killer.

Eye Empire The Brat Stop Kenosha WisconsinEye Empire is currently out on an extensive tour in the Midwest promoting their album Moment of Impact  that was recorded in 2010 with Corey Lowery and the band on the production end, Clint Lowery assisting with writing, and Sevendust members Lajon Witherspoon and Morgan Rose contributing their talents.  Moment of Impact is a solid rock album, and dare I say, radio friendly which isn’t a bad thing. I was actually floored when I played the first tune, “I Pray” off the album.  It’s a very polished rock album that positions Eye Empire for greatness.

Live these guys are stellar to say the least. If you listened to Submersed’s “Hollow” you can begin to understand the power of DC’s vocal abilities, but Eye Empire’s material makes “Hollow” sound like child’s play. DC can sound like an angel one minute, as in “Angel and Demons,” and in the next breath channel cookie monster.

The quartet performed as if they had 10,000 fans at their feet and appreciated everyone that was before them.  DC repeated several times throughout the night, “It’s not about how many; it’s about who shows up!”  There were fans there that drove 5 hours just to see them perform. Also in the crowd was a man who had just gone to the tattoo parlor and had the Eye Empire logo scribed into his bicep.  Corey pulled him onstage and let the rest of the fans see his dedication.

The energy was intense and DC warned the audience that the reoccurring theme for the night would be “moving your body.”  It was a high octane performance that was fueled by songs from Moment of Impact  including the likes of “Great Deceiver,” “Feels Like I am Falling,” “Bull in a China Shop,” “Self Destructive,” “More Than Fate,” and “I Pray.”

Official “I Pray” Music Video from Eye Empire

As DC had mentioned the theme of the night would be moving your body, but the actual reoccurring theme of the night was the appreciation this band has for their fans – #LoveRespectSupport.  It was genuine as these guys have seen the highs and lows of the business and, as DC put it, “[He understands] just how important fans are to music.”

Look out for some new music as they’ve been recording for the past 4 days in Cleveland in a makeshift studio in the Red Roof Inn.   There is no doubt that this band is going places and could quite easily handle an opening spot on a rock festival stage. In other words, this is the must-see band for 2012! Tour dates and photos from their set are below.

Las Vegas’ Imagine Dragons Release Interscope Debut EP

Imagine Dragons Continued Silence EP

After releasing three independent EPs and making a name for themselves on the West Coast live circuit, quartet Imagine Dragons released their debut EP Continued Silence this week on KIDintheKORNER/Interscope Records (iTunes). To celebrate, the band will perform at the Viper Room in Hollywood on February 22nd followed by dates at SXSW Music Festival.

Hailing from Las Vegas, the quartet harnessed the restless energy of “the city that never sleeps” with two EP’s in 2009 — Imagine Dragons and Hell and Silence — earning a string of local accolades including “Best Local Indie Band 2010” by Las Vegas Weekly and “Best CD of 2011” by Vegas Seven magazine for their third independent EP It’s Time. The first single from Continued Silence, “It’s Time,” takes its name from that release and is available now as a free download via TuneCore or the band’s Facebook page.

Augmenting their studio recordings, Imagine Dragons — which is Dan Reynolds (vocals), Wayne Sermon (guitar) Ben McKee (bass), Daniel Platzman (drums) — have brought their epic, larger-than-life live show to stages across the country, from headlining clubs and festivals to opening for such indie notables as Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Hot Chip, Nico Vega (whom they toured with in Fall 2010), and The Temper Trap, as well as for such major acts as Weezer and Interpol.  The band will debut their new material at a handful of upcoming shows and at SXSW Music Festival in March.

The songs on Continued Silence are just a taste of what’s to come from Imagine Dragons, who combine their synth-laden rock sound with the hip-hop sensibilities of producer, Alex Da Kid (Eminem, Rihanna). The alchemy that results when these creative forces get together is nothing short of explosive.  Recently signed by Alex Da Kid to his label KIDinaKORNER/Interscope REcords, the band is now working on tracks for their debut album.

Meet the band and get a preview of “It’s Time” in a new behind-the-scenes video from a recent photo shoot, and keep checking for updates from the road and news on the recording of their full-length release.

Cavo at the Fuel Room in Libertyville, IL 2/1/2012

Cavo is a four piece rock band that hails from St. Louis, Missouri. Their career started to shine back in 2008 with an EP featuring “Champagne.” Soon after the song saw huge success on St. Louis’ rock radio station, they were picked up by Warner Bros. Records. The song made it to the their major label release, Bright Nights, Dark Days in 2009 and also sat at the number one spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. They’ve toured with some of the hottest rock bands and they are starting 2012 with Black Stone Cherry.

Cavo won over many new fans at the Fuel Room in Libertyville last night. They have a sound that mixes Rob Thomas, Incubus, and a dash of King of Leon. They played songs off their new album Thick as Thieves that will be released this spring. Check out the official music video below.

James Durbin Takes the Stage at the Rave

James Durbin
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI
All photos by Paul Weber

James Durbin Headlines the Rave in MilwaukeeJames  Durbin was the 4th man left standing on American Idol’s 10th season.  He’s noted for delivering the rock to the American Idol stage.  Not only does James deliver a wide vocal range, he also can pick up the guitar and play.   Being the 4th man standing isn’t such a bad thing as James was quickly signed to the rock label, Wind-up records.  Like other American Idol rocker, Chris Daughtry, James was in a metal band before hitting the Idol stage.  Fans will notice that pre-American Idol albums from these rockers are heavier than their post American Idol albums.

James Durbin Headlines the Rave in MilwaukeeMr. Durbin hails from Santa Cruz, California and comes from a musically inclined family.  His father was a musician and his life ended too soon with a drug overdose when James was just 9 years old.  Today at 23 years old, he has a wife, a child, claim to American Idol fame, and a new album, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster.

Last night the Rave was set up with tables on the main floor and the venue pumped some Vertical Horizon and smooth jazz for the pre-show music. Since the Rave is set up to house 3 different stages of varying size, at times I wondered if I was at the correct one. If it weren’t for the DoryDrive signs stationed on the stage, I would have thought I was in the wrong place.  The night kicked off with Tennessee/Milwaukee alternative rockers, DoryDrive.  Their set started with a taped intro of music that had the crowd pumped, but the intro was too long.  As the intro ended the guys walked on the stage, picked up their respective instruments and proceeded to tune them. It was a bit of a let down from the killer intro they created.  Next on the bill was New Medicine.  Out of all the night’s acts, New Medicine was definitely the edgiest of the night.  This Minnesota band toured with the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Stone sour, Hollywood Undead, and also took the side-stage on the 2010 Uproar tour.  They weren’t so squeaky clean guys as DoryDrive as their set was filled with profanity, not that the crowd minded.

James Durbin Headlines the Rave in MilwaukeeJames was a good American Idol star by starting promptly at 10p.m. sharp.  This was a huge contrast to the previous night waiting an hour and half just to get into The New Kids on the Block’s Jordan Knight’s show in Joliet, Illinois.  The crowd was excited to see Durbin on the Rave stage other than the American Idol stage.  He proved his raw talent right from the start.  He was hitting octaves that would make Rob Halford jealous during “All I Want”.  He also proved that he has more than just a knack for singing as he engaged the audience right from the moment he set foot on stage.  He had the crowd eating from his hands and cheering on command between songs.

Near the beginning of the show, when James had the crowd wanting more, the rest of the band kicked in some solos.  Drum and guitar solos are always cool, but when everybody is there for James it’s hard to get into the solos.  Like DoryDrive’s intro music, the solos went on for too long.

Since James is fairly new to the big name and big stage, he should definitely catch an opening slot on a bigger summer tour.  He would be a huge asset for a mainstream radio rock band.  It’s kind of crazy that the only two shows James had lined up are in a 40 mile span of each other in the Midwest.  It was a couple weeks ago James performed an acoustic show in Portland that fans can see here.  So whether he’s onstage with a full band plugged in or stripped down acoustic, his talent shines through and shows the American Idol audience they might have made a mistake by not voting him as the American idol winner.

Artist to Watch: Dead Sara

Dead SaraI was introduced to the Los Angeles based rock band Dead Sara last year when I was emailed their self-titled debut.  The band is fronted by Emily Armstrong and includes Siouxsie Medley on guitar, Sean Friday on drums, and Chris Null on bass.

When any album is loaded into my playlist to review, I tend to dive in with my ears half cocked. I am handed “new” music all the time, and I say “new” because 80% of the time new bands just sound like copycats of other artists currently topping the charts.  Enter Dead Sara. From the moment I listened to “Weatherman” off their self-titled release, I was floored.  I fell in love with this quartet because I found an album I caught myself knowing all the lyrics to after several rotations in my music playlist.  It’s such a rarity to find an album in these times that I can listen to from beginning to end and not have boredom set in.  While “Weatherman” does attract most of the raves from critics, “Whispers & Ashes” has left a permanent mark on my brain.  Thank goodness the release of their album last October was just the start for Dead Sara. We caught up with Emily Armstrong and the interview can be seen here.

This year is shaping up to be a great year for the band.  They are set to play Van’s Warped Tour (tour dates below), which comes off a West Coast tour with Bush late last year.   The group is also set to release a 3 song EP featuring the song “Weatherman” on February 7th via Pocket Kid Records/Fontana/Universal. The digital release will also feature “Sorry for it All” and the acoustic rendition of “Test On My Patience.”

This summer make plans to catch these Los Angeles rockers on Warped Tour! You may just find your new favorite band on the bill. I know I found mine.

Eve to Adam Banquet for a Starving Dog

New York rockers, Eve to Adam, have recently released a new webisode for their next single, “Reach,” which is off of the band’s album Banquet for a Starving Dog, released in 2011. The clip features lead singer Taki Sassaris dishing on the truly inspirational meaning behind the track, “If you’re given one more chance, how deep would you dig inside yourself to do everything you can to realize a dream?” “It’s really a song about fighting for your dreams.” The clip can be seen here:

He Sure Does Love to Smoke

Executive Branch Cigar logo

Snoop Dogg is known to smoke a few things in his life, so why not make a buck off it!  Snoop Dogg just signed on to endorse Executive Branch Cigars.  What did you think he was going to endorse? The cigars will be available for purchase during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as Snoop Dogg headlines the final day with Dr. Dre.  The cigars will be sold with two cigars per pouch at $.99.

Snoop declares:

“Throughout my career I have been lucky enough to travel the world and try all different types of tobacco products. During my travels throughout South America and the Caribbean, I was fortunate to encounter this tobacco company, Executive Branch and was so impressed by their commitment to quality [far superior than all others], I knew I had to bring them to the States for all my fans to enjoy,” said Snoop Dogg.  “Throughout 2012, we plan on releasing new styles and flavors, in which I will be working with their team to make sure all products are up to Snoop Dogg standards.”

An Open Letter to Jim Urie and SOPA/PIPA Supporters

Pardon me while I laugh out loud at the likes of the RIAA and music labels that are supporting and backing SOPA (Stop Online Pirating Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act).  Why do I find this amusing when perhaps I should be freaking out? Well, because I think the RIAA and many (not all) musicians that are backing these bills are hypocrites.  Yes, I said it, hypocrites! It drives me nuts when artists complain about fans illegally downloading their music on the peer-to-peer networks.  Back in the day, I used to have sympathy for those artists–not much, but there was a thread of it present. Now that I am a photographer and writer myself, many artists have squashed any shred of sympathy I had left for them. Why? Here it is:

I started photographing concerts about 4 years ago. Throughout the years  I’ve had more and more artists asking to use my photographs for one reason or another, such as personal use, social media PR, and things of that nature. The funny part is that artists don’t like paying for photos and neither does their management (it’s like pulling teeth), and since there are so many photographers, if one asks for money they can say “no thank you” and turn to another photographer. It doesn’t break my heart; I am not angry because it’s life. It just becomes a challenge to make a living off shooting concerts; it can be nearly impossible.  However, I choose to find different revenue streams for myself instead of being angry and fighting.  Fighting? Yes, because after 4 years of doing this, I found that artists just go ahead and take the photograph(s) and use them anyways.  They see it as just a photograph, but it is art to me…it’s my art and they just took it and used it.  Sometimes they don’t even make contact about a photo and they just use it on their Facebook and social media pages without permission, and who knows what else they are doing with the photos.  Isn’t that stealing? Yes, yes it is…they are doing exactly what they hate their fans for doing.

I don’t really want to fight these artists for a scrap of money.  I see other photographers spend a lot of time and effort damaging their own image in the process because they take to social media sites publicity bashing the artists, fans, and websites that use their images without permission (sometimes it’s the only way to get their attention). Going after an artist for compensation for using photos can lead to unintended side effects, such as being blacklisted. Don’t think that can’t and won’t happen because it does.  In the business of shooting and covering live shows, one lives and dies by an artist, management, and/or PR firm’s hand.

So I laugh at the groups that are pushing SOPA and PIPA through our Senate and House.  You won’t win, because who deemed The Entertainment World high ruler of the Internet?  The industry does the same things that it is trying to stop just to make a buck. One is no better than the other.

Below is a 4 minute video about the intended purpose of PIPA now in the Senate.  It’s scary to see how much control one industry would have over the Internet.

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

While the internet is buzzing and bloggers, sites, and companies are publicly standing up against SOPA  and PIPA, some of the associations that are involved with backing the bill are taking to their email contact lists and assuming that all the people on it are for it; that’s a bad assumption.   Below is the email sent out to a list of people, I am suspecting music journalists and bloggers, from Jim Urie CEO of Universal Music Group. Mind you, these are a semi-regularly emails sent to the list and not quite sure how I ended up on it. Please note the two websites at the bottom of the email as they list supporters of SOPA and PIPA.

We need your help – please take a minute and act now. Legislation is pending in Congress that would address foreign websites engaged in piracy and counterfeiting but it has been wildly mischaracterized in the media and blogosphere. The hyperbole has caused a lot of people to contact Congress in opposition to bills that have, in reality, been carefully balanced to ensure that we help bring law and order to the Internet without jeopardizing the communications tool that is vital to all our lives and livelihoods.

Your overwhelming response to my earlier emails helped kick-off this legislative effort. Now, the issue is at a fever pitch. Even if you sent an e-mail in support of this legislation before, it’s time to do so AGAIN.

Please click HERE to send an e-mail to Congress asking them to support this important legislation. It only takes a moment but makes a big difference – just enter your home address and click “send.”

Jim Urie

P.S. – To learn more about this issue and the legislation under consideration, please visit or

My concern is:  Who is going to protect people like me from the likes of the associations that will be in control that steal my work?  If SOPA and PIPA pass, can I shut down the artists that steal my work or put them in jail for 5 years?

Glenn Danzig and President Obama are Not Having Dinner Anytime Soon

Heavy Metal legend Glenn Danzig was a guest on Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld back on April 28, 2011. It came as no surprise when Glenn spoke his mind about the Obama Administration -it is Fox News programming after all.

He came onto the show to talk about his new album, Deth Red Sabaoth, which is the first new Danzig album of original material in 6 years. It is pretty odd that that he went onto Red Eye to do an interview. Glenn isn’t exactly into doing press and doesn’t like press at his shows, especially photographers. It’s funny because if you look at him he is getting older, but he’s still pretty fit and looks amazing.

In the video above, Greg asked Daniz,”Would you ever do an album about singing about puppies and rainbows?” Danzig’s response, “No, maybe I’ll do a real horror record and talk about the Obama administration.” That is when the chuckles and sounds of shock came from the Fox Studio. Greg exclaimed, “I didn’t see that one coming!” I can only say really??! It’s Fox News and why would Glenn go on Red Eye and not state his political views?

Greg also says he’s going to try and catch one of his live shows. I would like to know if he did and I would have liked to see that.

Scott Lucas performing at Austin’s Fuel Room –Libertyville, IL

Local H is a duo of funny guys that are in an alternative rock band.  Their breakout success came from their second release of Polygram entitled As Good As Dead.  The album spawned their hit “Bound For The Floor.”  All together Local H released 5 studio recordings.  Back in 2010 Scott went solo with his band Scott Lucas & The Married Men. As a duo or as a unit the guys always make sure to perform in Chicago on New Year’s Eve and this year was no different, which was at the Bottom Lounge with Monkey Paw.  They guys haven’t released a full length album since 2008’s Twelve Angry Months.  Back in October of 2010 Local H’s Awesome Mix Tape#1 was made available digitally, on a physical cd, and even a few cassette tapes (that is truly an awesome mix tape).  The mix tape was comprised of all covers from Pink Floyd to TV on the Radio.

Britney Spears’ Toxic cover

The night started with a bang with fellow Chicago rockers, Trigger Fish.  The band had some of their fans “shipped” in from Chicago on a party bus, so it made for a loud and supportive crowd.  It was at the transition when Trigger Fish was loading up their gear that things got interesting.  There were three men onstage setting up for Local H.  Two of them looked like older men; one wore grungy jeans and faded black shirt while the other was in the same looking jeans and a G&B Records shirt.  The third looked like a younger man who was clean cut and ready to rock.  During setup murmurs could be heard in the crowd, “where did the band get these two guys?” or better yet, “I bet these guys work for beer.”  Turns out the two seasoned looking gentlemen were Scott Lucas and Brian St. Clair.   It was a bit of a letdown because it took awhile to get over the shock of watching two rockers with grey hair and beards looking like they were hiding out in the wood for months.  I hate to be so harsh, but when one’s job is to be a performer at least try to make oneself presentable because these two were not even recognizable.

Scott Lucas performing at Austin’s Fuel Room –Libertyville, ILOn a positive note, Scott and Brian can still tear down a bar.  It really couldn’t get any louder than it was last night.  I walked outside, because it was getting too loud, and heard the walls buzzing and shaking.   They squeezed “Bound to the Floor” early in their set followed closely by “Fine and Good” and “Michelle (Again).”

Their onstage setup could leave some confused because Scott’s rig was setup stage left and Brian’s drum kit was stage right with a microphone stand all by its lonesome in the center of the stage.   It wasn’t until a third man came running out with a tambourine and played for a bit and then ran back to the side of the stage.

While the crowd showed the love for these local rockers, Scott and Brian really need to clean up their image.

Behind the Scenes with Scott Weiland

Making of “Winter Wonderland”

In a handful of brand new behind-the-scenes clips, Scott Weiland sits down to share his inspiration behind his Christmas album The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, as well as the techniques behind the making of the video for “Winter Wonderland.”

Scott Weiland Discusses “White Christmas”

In one clip (above), Weiland discusses “White Christmas” and shares about how he first recorded the song on cassette tapes in the early 90s as gifts for his family: “My family members said that that was the best Christmas present that they had ever had.”  In a separate ‘Making Of’ clip for the “Winter Wonderland” video, the director revealed that they used old camera filters from the 50s to get that “glowing look,” and to create a genuine, vintage feel to compliment the song.
