Painkiller Hotel is a Chicago-based rock band that dropped their debut album, Black Roses, in 2009 on Ridge Rock Music. There is no surprise that Painkiller Hotel was signed to Ridge Rock Music where 3 Doors Down guitarist, Chris Henderson, is one of the owners. The band has all the goods to be in the ranks as 3 Doors Down and Chris only speaks highly of this rock quartet. I can even see Painkiller Hotel opening for 3 Doors Down based on their sound that would definitely warm up 3 Doors Down fans on tour. The band’s first album is completely radio rock with catchy choruses and Kevin Presbrey’s distinctive vocals.

The track that stands out the most on Black Roses is “Voice in My Head.” It starts with the soft and inviting vocals of Kevin Presbrey. Now let’s talk about Kevin for a minute. I was forewarned about is amazing voice. It is very striking to Live’s Ed Kowalczyk’s voice. The distinguishing feature of Kevin’s voice is he’s much less whiny and has more power behind it. “Voice in my Head” is a ballad of a broken heart and Kevin’s vulnerable vocal delivery convinces the listener of the pain from his wounds.
“Becoming Someone Else” is another fantastic rock track. The beginning of this track sounds like something off a Creed album. “You don’t know what you’ve done to me” is one line of lyric that pretty much drives the tone of the song home. It’s tracks like this one and “Voice in My Head” that showcase the talent of the band. There is no doubt these guys can rock and have the “x” factor.
The album covers themes from the man who is healing from heartache and finding himself to love. Yes, most of time Ed sings of women but that’s not a bad thing. Black Roses is receiving heavy rotation time on shuffle in y MP3 player. It is great to see a band focus on a well produced and mixed album and not worrying completely about their image. When you have the goods you don’t need to have all the hoopla surrounding you. This is a genuine rock band with the hooks and solid vocals to prove it.
