Seether & Flyleaf
Viejas Concerts in the Park – Alpine, CA
4/19/2008

Saturday was one hell of a day. Fly back from Chicago just in time to drive to Viejas Concerts in the Park in Alpine, CA. We got there just in time for the start of Flyleaf’s set. We had some issues getting in that prevented us from actually get in on time to catch the first opening act.

It was in the high 50’s all day and as the sun dropped to show the full moon the evening was progressively got colder and colder. Flyleaf jumped on stage with mounds of energy, that or they were cold too. To the shock of us who didn’t know who Flyleaf was we quickly learned that it is fronted by a woman. Her name is Lacey Mosley and I would sum her sound up as a combination of Bjork and Alanis Morissette with lots of power behind it. Flyleaf is a quintet from Texas that includes Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann on guitar, the super-energetic and toned Pat Seals on bass, and James Culpepper on drums.

The stage presence was there. They were all climbing the stacks of speakers and jumping off of them. They moved around on stage as if fire was underneath them. Lacey spun and jumped with the music. They are truly a warm up band, because they literally got the crowd moving enough to keep warm on that chili Saturday night.

The last song of their set was “There for you” off of their self-titled album. The song was a great rock ballad that transcended just relationships Lacey dedicated that song to Jesus.

Not too long after the screen went up on stage and Seether’s crew set the stage.

Seether did not disappoint. They opened with “No Jesus Christ” and into “Needles.” The set was mixed with great lighting, video clips, white christmas lights, and little Chucky dolls. Yes, this made for a creepy yet very rock and roll stage set. The set included songs of the new album such as their new single “Rise Above.”

Of course they couldn’t leave without playing their radio hits such as “Fake It” and “Remedy” that made the crowd roar and want more only to be left with the “house lights” up and the crew on stage. Frontman, Shaun Morgan, thanked everybody for sticking through a very chili night outside. There wasn’t much talking during the performance. My favorite song of the night was “Driven Under” off their Disclaimer Album and “Rise Above.”
