Lupe Fiasco Soundset 2012

2012 marks the five year anniversary of Soundset. This festival was jam packed with music, B-Boys and B-Girls dancing the day away, a car show and graffiti art. Two Main Stages and the Fifth Element Stage delivered 40 artists performing nine hours of music. Unfortunately the fest was cut short due to tornado warnings. It was looking pretty ugly out during Lupe Fiasco so I cut out early. Boy am I glad I did! While walking to the car the winds started to kick up and the rain was on its way. By the time we reached the highway it was torrential downpour. The clouds moved fast and we could see a funnel cloud start to form. Shit was getting real out there!

Even though Lupe didn’t get to finish his set he came out with some awesome energy. Out of the entire festival he definitly made my top 3 acts!

Ian Matthias Bavitz better known as Aesop Rock was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged from the 1990s and early 2000s. According from his bio his name Aesop came from a movie he had acted in with some friends that stuck. The Rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes. Yesterday he hit Soundset with Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz.

Action Bronson took the stage on a hot and steamy Soundset Sunday. His stage name derives from gangster William “Action” Jackson, and tough-guy actor Charles Bronson. Before entering the rap scene he was a respected fire-flame gourmet chef in New York City, and frequently raps about food in his songs. I don’t know if he has anything knew but he used to host his own online cooking show entitled “Action in the Kitchen“. Action Bronson released his debut studio album Dr. Lecter last year and is available in digital download and also on CD. You can find them on his website. Follow Action Bronson on Twitter

Interview: Jon Larsen from Volbeat

Volbeat

Since the last time we saw Volbeat in Cincinnati, they have blown up in the US with their tour with Megadeth and Motorhead. They are a premier and first-class European Metal band that is sweeping North America by storm playing coast to coast. They have been touring on the album Beyond Hell/Above Heaven for a couple years now and are set for another run this summer.

Amy spoke with band drummer Jon Larsen to get everybody ready for their set at Rock on the Range. The two discussed the evolution of the band in the short time since they were last seen in Ohio. They will be taking the stage at Rock on the Range in Columbus along with the rest of the best acts in Metal and Rock music.

Amy: I know you guys just got off the Gigantour Tour. Did you have any crazy Motorhead or Megadeth stories along the way?

Jon: No not really actually, not really any interesting stories to tell. We got along fine with both camps and everybody was in high spirits. I think it was definitely a great tour for all.

Amy: Rock on the Range is always a crazy time in Columbus. What are you looking forward to about the show and are you looking forward to seeing any other bands there?

Jon: Oh yeah, I am always looking forward to seeing Anthrax. We like to hang out with those guys.  We have hung out with them a few times. We don’t know Zombie or Manson but Anthrax is gonna be cool.

John 5 Talks Serial Killers and ROTR

John 5 Rob Zombie

John 5 has seen almost everything in Rock music from his days with David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson, and currently with Rob Zombie and has been credited on songs in all aspects of music from Saliva to Salt n Pepa to k.d. Lang to an upcoming collaboration with Rod Stewart.  He has gained the reputation as a musical genius and one of the most action packed guitarists in the world. He has just released his sixth solo album, God Told Me To which mixes acoustic Spanish style guitar along with heavy metal riffs.

Amy caught up with the guitar player to promote the new album and Rob Zombie’s upcoming appearance at Rock on the Range in Columbus. The two discussed some of the dark aspects of what goes into his writing as well as the lighter aspects of what puts him to sleep every night.  John 5 will take the stage with headliner Rob Zombie on Sunday May 20th in Columbus.

Amy: Can you tell us about the name of your album God Told Me To?

John: The name, it is funny because I remember, I am from Michigan, I am from Grosse Pointe. I was upper class growing up there. I was brought up in a really nice environment and home and I remember the night before I was leaving for California to really give it my shot saying, “I am going to try this. I am going to try to be this musician type of thing.” I remember I was saying my little prayer. I never wished to be a “rockstar.” I just wanted to be a working musician. My dreams didn’t even go past a session player or a working musician like that. It was too far beyond my dreams. That’s kind of what the title means, that kind of thing, but also you can look at in the negative way, like when someone does a horrific murder, they always say, “Oh, God told me to.”

Celebrate Memorial Day at 2012 Rocklahoma

2012 Rocklahoma
Pryor, OK
Friday-Sunday, May 25-27, 2012
Doors: 3:00 p.m.

Rocklahoma returns with yet another stellar lineup of top rock artists for a monstrous Memorial Day weekend party, May 25-27. The 2012 lineup features a variety of headliners and supporting acts that span several decades and genres of music. Creed, Rob Zombie and supergroup Chickenfoot will close each respective day’s festivities. With three stages and well over sixty hard rock acts, music will literally flow non-stop from early afternoon until late evening.

Guitar aficionados should be salivating to find Slash, Joe Satriani of Chickenfoot and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine demonstrating their masterful fretwork in a live setting. Each has redefined music via their trademark styles, they are true pioneers of their craft. Those who prefer vocals need to look no further than Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche, his operatic voice is arguably one the the best in metal, past or present.

The festival also features a handful of bands that recently broke out on rock radio. Most notably, Chevelle and Volbeat have been around for years; yet both had their first Billboard #1 singles within the last few months. Both bands have been touring relentlessly and come in to Rocklahoma primed to impress. Other bands to appear that are currently sitting on hit singles, and on the verge of breaking out, include Janus, Redlight King, Aranda and New Medicine. Looking for a positive message with your music? P.O.D., Eve to Adam and Red are slated to perform Friday night and deliver a proclamation beyond the typical lyrical trifecta of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Creed were among the top of the charts during the late ’90s. Their frontman Scott Stapp blew away the crowd when they opened their 2012 tour in Chicago a couple weeks ago. They’ll be looking to do the same in Pryor, OK at the top of Friday night’s lineup. The original members of The Darkness also recently reunited after five year hiatus. The British glam rockers brought 1980′s hair metal back to the forefront when “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” smashed the charts in 2003. They will perform on Saturday’s Rocklahoma lineup, hopefully with rumored new music in tow.

Official Rocklahoma line-ups for each day
Friday (May 25):  Creed, Slash, Chevelle, P.O.D., Cavo, Adelitas Way, Red, Redlight King, Janus, Eve to Adam, Beneath, Fist of Rage, Lynam, Pretty Little Suicide, Hessler, Down & Dirty, Ragdoll, Sunset Riot, Absence of Ink, For the Broken, Echo Fuzz, Shotgun Rebels, Soulicit, Rocker Lips and Mine Enemies Fall

Saturday (May 26): Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Theory of a Deadman, Volbeat, The Darkness, 10 Years, Pop Evil, Trivium, New Medicine, Anti-Mortem, Gypsy Pistoleros, Lillian Axe, Firstryke, S.E.X. Department, Ruff Justice, Switchblade Scarlett, On Fire, Villians Dance, Stun, Dagger, Unwritten Rulz, Echo Vendetta, A Good Fight and Sweatin Bullets

12 Acts to Watch at Lollapalooza in 2012

Lolla 2012 Santigold Sharon Van Etten Dev

It’s been awhile since a festival has seen this much speculation about its line-up.  Lollapalooza’s line-up was “leaked” twice before the actual announcement come down the pipe from Lollapalooza.  The first was a Twitter hoax and the second came just a few days ago with a nice visual of the full line-up for 2012.  As the second leak appeared online the chatter spun into high gear.  The talk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing in Chicago and Milwaukee so close to Lollapalooza was brought up in defense of how “off” the leak had to be.  Also no one could believe that Black Sabbath would play a show without Bill Ward, and possibly, Tony Iommi due to his cancer.  Yet some people forget that Black Sabbath is probably getting paid a pretty penny to be a headliner and I am going to gander that Black Sabbath didn’t reunite because they thought of some killer new material to perform.  It all comes down to money and if Bill Ward won’t play they will find someone else to, and if Tony can’t make it, the same will happen.

Aside from the conversation above, people aren’t exactly salivating at the mouth about the line-up, as it was very apparent on Lolla’s Facebook page when the leaks began and started to be confirmed.  The thing is The Black Keys just played Chicago and hit Milwaukee May 16th, Florence + The Machine is set to play Milwaukee at the end of April, and as previously stated, The Red Hot Chili Peppers is playing dates in Chicago close to Lolla.  That being said, there isn’t much of a draw for the Midwest as most of the headliners have or will hit the area relatively close to Lolla time.  It would be nice if Lolla announced a really large act that would be more of a draw, and the one thing missing from the line-up is the hip hop/rap act.  It was starting to be a staple of the fest for a couple years running, but it looks like Coachella took that thunder this year.  Heck even Summer Camp snagged Common.

So why go? There are so many talent acts performing that it’s not even funny.  Here’s our list of the 12 non-headlining acts that are sure to grab attention at Lollapalooza.

Lollapalooza 2012 Headliners Leaked?!

lollapalooza logoUPDATE: (4/9/2012) Another leak of the full line-up!! http://thedeadhub.com/2012/04/09/lollapalooza-line-up-leaked-again/

If you are on Twitter you may have noticed a battle between Perry Farrell (@perryfarrell) and Lolla Leaks (@lollaleaks).  Farrell has gone as far as comparing the Lollapalooza insider that is running Lolla Leaks on Twitter to a sex offender (see images below).

Just 9 hours ago Lolla Leaks posted the supposed 2012 Lollapalooza headliners including Metallica, Beyonce, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Beck, and Sonic Youth (Final Show).  A few of the artists actually make sense.  Metallica hit the East Coast and the West Coast with the Big 4 last year and have their festival this year that IS NOT in the Midwest. For Metallica to completely skip over the Midwest just seems too cruel.  The Red Hot Chili Peppers are also on tour and would fit the Lollapalooza bill.  The only artist that I would have reservations about is Beyonce, but this could be her big post baby show.  I personally hope there is some truth to it, because I wouldn’t mind seeing all the bands, but hot damn it would be insane!

Thinking of going to The Gathering of the Juggalos?

The Gathering 2011 To Hog Rock 1

Here are a few things to expect during your Gathering experience. Let’s start off when you enter the grounds. Car searches! Your car will get searched for glass bottles, drugs, weapons. Roadblocks! When being stopped by the police you will be asked if you have anything on you. If you give it up freely you will be let go with a $150 fine. If you don’t give it up the dogs will be brought out and you will be detained for the whole weekend until you see a judge on Monday. There were also searches on the way out to make sure you didn’t buy anything to take home with you. My advice, don’t take any souvenirs home with ya. Not that I am condoning drug use, but if you buy it at the fest – do it there! Don’t try to take it home with ya.

The Gathering 2011 Hog Rock Pig

People constantly saying Whoop Whoop……and expecting you to say it back.

The Gathering 2011 Graffiti Shed

Bulletholes & Gunshots. During the night you can hear random shots being fired. I would guess it’s cause there aint much to do in bufu.

The Gathering 2011 Bullet Hole Stop Sign

The Gathering 2011 Bullet Hole Turn Sign

If you are a girl be prepared for every guy to ask you to show your tits. Apparently country boys do not have cable.

Juggalos. I thought Lollapalooza was supposed to bring all the weirdo’s out, but Lolla got nothing on The Gathering. I love it!

Naked girls. Mind you most of them are not great to look at. But they are everywhere. Walking around. Chillin’ by the showers. Riding the carnival rides. Watching acts at the main stage. If you are one of these girls you will be hit on. You will be asked to take photos with people. And you will hear pickup lines like “I like to eat pussy”. Maybe this is the reason why these guys ask every girl to show their tatas.

This is a BYOB fest so people sell beer out of their coolers constantly. You can find some pretty decent deals walking around. Just keep in mind people make runs from where they are sitting back to their cars to refill their coolers so they aren’t always cold. Drink up!

Graffiti everywhere!

 The Gathering 2011 Graffiti

You can get just about anything for a buck. We found lots of shots for a $1. There was a jello shot stand, then there are the not so classy shots out of a bottle of Jameson, Jäger, or whatever else people have. Fuck there was even a girl selling squirts of her breast-milk for a $1. Disgusting!

I also saw a girl with a sign that read “You buy coke from me and you can snort it off my tits”

There are so many drugs out in the open. Saw lots of bongs, pipes, coke, you name it it’s here! While chillin’ at the picnic tables I heard a guy ask to bum a cigarette. When told no he’s like “I’ll trade you some yay”. Needless to say a deal was made and tho I think the guy who gave up his cigarette “won” in that deal it was a little crazy to see. People openly offer you drugs constantly. Like they were bags of peanuts at a baseball game.

The Gathering 2011 Whipit

Lastly I would like to wrap this up with a few stories I heard to really get across how different this fest is.

In the Freak Show Tent: I heard last year Ron Jeremy was fisting people. Classy.

One year a Girl had sex with a microphone for free shit, also in the Freak Show Tent. Then came back the next year to top her previous performance by squirting all over people after her basterbation session. Trashy.

Ok this one happened this year! I heard this from a fellow Press peep. While over by their camping area along the fence line they noticed people sneaking in by crawling under the fence. Fellow Juggalos were getting pissed telling the Press to take photos of them to turn these guys in. Ummmm we’re Press guys….not Police! So anyway. The girl I was talking to said there were guys hanging out down by the fence for like 2 hours. When they came back to camp she asked them what they had been up to. They said “setting boobie traps” come to find out they drooped duce all along the fence. Boobie trap? More like poopie trap!

I just have to say I love that she is wearing chucks with this outfit!

What is The Gathering of the Juggalos?

The Gathering 2011 Hog Rock

To many it’s ICP’s annual music festival…..I like to call it mini Amsterdam. Tho I’m sure Amsterdam is much nicer than Hog Rock. This festival holds no bar. It’s durty, grungy, a bit trashy and full of drugs. You can find just about any substance to enhance your Gathering experience on “Dealer’s Bridge”.

The Gathering 2011 Dealers Bridge at Night

The Gathering 2011 Dealers Bridge by Day

The fest itself is pretty small. The grounds map looks GIANT with all the camp sites but you can walk it in a matter of minutes. There is the main stage, second stage and of course wrestling stage and the freak show stage. All within minutes of each other.

The Gathering 2011 Freak Show Tent

Now being a festival person, I have never been to a festival quite like this. Full of dibochary around every corner. I mean I get drug usage at a concert. Weed is smoked just about anywhere these days. Even at Lolla you will see people light up a joint while waiting for the next band or smoking a joint while chillin’ in the grass listening to some hippie music. But I have never seen anyone just bust out lines like it ain’t no big thang. And you never hear anyone asking me to show them my tits or flash a joint and a bag of a powdery substance asking if I need anything. Sure debauchery!

What to do:

You can keep busy with 9am wake and bake parties to afternoon sideshows before the main stage opens at 6pm lasting til midnight. If you are still roaring to go you can hit up some wrestling matches and a comedy show. If you are still up after all that there is always the ‘I’ve never been so high after party”.

George Clinton was awesome! I think he was the only act where the crowd did not bomb while on stage. He was not dressed in his known attire, he didn’t have any colorful dreads or super outlandish outfits which was slightly disappointing but the show itself was funk-tastic. The highlight for me was when he played “We Want The Funk”.

So before Ice came on security was on “Girl watch” trying to find girls in bikini’s to join Ice on stage. There were these 3 girls walking around butt naked and the guy backstage was all about them! Saying YES! I need all of you up here! People from backstage were peaking out to see the naked girls in all their glory. One guy even saying “dad you have to see this!” Did he just say dad? Yeah he did! Once it was getting closer to show time the girls where told they had to cover themselves up. LMAO Sorry backstage dudes! But I have to give props to Ice for having them do so. He’s got 2 little girls at home! It’s a respect thing and looking out for their best interest. You go ninja!

Lolla’s Keeping it Green!

rock and recycle lollapalooza tentRock and Recycle Booth

Love how Lolla tries to make the festival as echo-friendly as possible. Here are my top picks of how Lolla Cares:

The use of biodegradable plates and utensils

toyota green bike
Bikes Used to Generate Power for Toyota’s Slushy Machines

A plethora of garbage and recycle bins:

Lollapalooza set up a Rock and Recycle stations that gives concert goers the opportunity to earn free Lollapalooza t-shirts.  Each participate is issued a green recycling bag to take with them around the festival grounds. Once filled the bag is returned to the station for a free t-shirt.  It is a huge success. We witness ticketholders walking around the grounds, even during performance times, walking around asking people if they had anything to recycle. Many obliged to recycling their beer cans and water bottles.  The program this year was so successful that they ran out of green recycling bags and had to use regular garbage bags.

Green Street:

Green Street was made up of a Marketplace made up of organic foods and green vendors.  One of the vendors were giving away 4×4 squares made of recycled and biodegradable paper that is embedded with wildflower seeds that is meant to be planted.

Camelbak Filling Stations:

For those who purchased or owned camelback backpacks for water could refill them for free at several stations on the grounds.  This reduces the amount of water bottles consumed by festival patrons.

Bike Valet:

Taking your car to Lollapalooza is about the worse thing you could do and it’s not just for environmental reasons. With 90,000 ticketholders each day, the amount of people on the busy streets of Chicago gets more crowded.  Public transportation is highly recommended to use and many did. Bikes were also a popular form of transportation.

Lollapalooza Toyota Seasaw

See-Saw That powered the Toyota Tent

The See-Saw and Bikes at the Toyota tent:

Toyota had a clever way to get the attention of passing Lolla fans.  They gave away reusable cloth Lollapalooza bags, bandanas, and slinkies.  They also had a see-saw in the front of the tent and when in use it would power the lights in the tent. There was also a set of bikes in the tent that powered the slushy machine.

coldplay lollapalooza stage

What a gorgeous evening! Before the headliners took to the stage the night sky lit up with beautiful laser lights and fireworks. I could not believe the massive amount of people who turned out for Coldplay. Just when you couldn’t think anymore people could fit in the North end they just kept squeezing on in. This was my first time seeing Coldplay and they sounded awesome throughout the grounds. The excitement of the crowd was so uplifting that I forgot just how tired I was from the long hot day. Fans from around the world tuned in to Lollapalooza’s live stream to watch Coldplay. Their Facebook page was swarmed with dedicated fans commenting on how much they enjoyed the show and wished they could be there.
