Milwaukee Impresses All That Remains (and Vice Versa)

All That Remains
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI
All That Remains The Rave Milwaukee

Phil Labonte, the expressive and and openly opinionated All That Remains vocalist, voiced his impression of the Milwaukee crowd many times as he appeared genuinely blown away by the energetic fans.   Always impressive live, All That Remains opened at full throttle with Hold On and those who didn’t heed their advice were literally thrown.  Crowd surfing was a bit of a misnomer as fans and articles of clothing were tossed well above the crowd throughout the show.

All That Remains The Rave Milwaukee

Crowd participation peaked at the onset and continued until the closing lines of Two Weeks to finish their set.  When Labonte proclaimed, “This is the heaviest song you will hear tonight” to introduceSome of the People, All of the TIme the sold-out Eagle’s Ballroom erupted into a flurry of motion.  By the time the song ended Labonte had a huge smile and screamed “Milwaukeeeeee!  You guys are a crazy f—ing ass crowd!”  He spoke the truth and it’s hard to believe that anybody present would have anything left for the Five Finger Death Punch headline set.  That was not the case as “Five Finger” “DEATH PUNCH” erupted at deafening levels shortly before they took the stage.  This was a brilliant night of metalcore at its best!

Why Do People Use Such Words?!

All That Remains is a metal band. Ok they are more like metal road dogs.  I can’t remember when I haven’t seen them as a support or headlining their own tour.  As a matter of fact, they are playing the Warped Tour festival this year. Yet, it was only 2 years ago when I sat down for a quick interview with their bass player, Jeanne Sagan.  At that time they were playing on the Jaeger Stage on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival.    I asked her for a fun fact about the band. She replied, “ Ummm…we are a bunch of nerds! Jason plays World of Warcraft. Mike really likes sports and Phil likes Halo and he’s the internet guy–the Twitter and Facebook. He’s very nerdy like that. I read books and I like science a lot. You don’t have to be really cool.”

So let me introduce you to Philip Labonte.  As Jeanne stated he is “the internet guy.” He is a very outspoken frontman that doesn’t hold back when it comes to his Twitter and Facebook pages.  I’ve been following Phil on his Facebook page for awhile now.  I would call him the Most Entertaining Person on Facebook because he really states things as they are.  He warns people that if you hang around long enough on his page he will offend you.  Actually, his About Me section on Facebook states, “I yell at a stick, I shoot guns, and if you’re around long enough, I say shit that pisses you off.” I like Phil because he’s a great frontman, he advocates for the right to bare arms, but I am not a fan of some of his offensive language.  Mind you, here at The Dead Hub we don’t like to censor our language either so language such as shit, bitches, and fucks do appear in articles. Yet,there are a couple phrases that people use in everyday language that really really bother me and it’s the word faggot.

Soulja Boy just got in a mess with fighting a racist fan with some of the same hateful language.  You don’t fight hate Add an Imagewith hate.  Phil recently posted on Facebook : “If anyone thinks me being a lil open and emotional on FB is bad, your a total faggot. If I didn’t have very deep feelings that I am comfortable being honest about ATR wouldnt be a band.” Again, I really don’t have a problem with the message he is trying to convey, but really did you have to use the language that makes you sound like a bigot? He used it repeatedly today too. His Twitter feed and Facebook status are below.

Dearest Phil,

I love you and ATR.  I really don’t think you’ll give a flying shit about this, but can you please try to find other words to convey how you are feeling.  I love the fact that you try to get your followers active and inform them about their rights when it comes to the NRA, but every time you use the “f” word I cringe! You posted this on Facebook:

How can you use the “f” word over and over and support gays and gays in the military? You write songs come up with something more creative!

Your Fan,

All That Remains Mayhem Jager 2009 3

All That Remains and The Devil Wears Prada will co-headline the NAPALM & NOISE TOUR this winter. The tour will hit both coasts and will feature support from Story Of The Year and Haste The Day, pre-sale is live today here ( and public on-sale date is Friday 10/2/09 (full tour dates below). Both lead singers for ATR and TDWP commented on the joint tour:

Prada vocalist Mike Hranica said “We’re excited to hit the road with All That Remains, Story Of The Year and Haste The Day. Being a co- headline tour, we’ll be able to play a longer set, too, which means more brand new songs off ‘With Roots Above and Branches Below.’ I’m stoked to be hitting up cities that we haven’t played in a while, and playing songs that we haven’t had the chance to play within the previous tours.”

Phil Labonte of All That Remains adds, “We’re really excited to be hitting the road with a The Devil Wears Prada, Story Of The Year, and Haste The Day. ATR had such a great time playing on The Warped tour in 2008 with both DWP and SOTY were so we’re looking forward to the same kind warm reception we got all last summer! We’re hoping that ATR fans will come out and check out the other bands and rock with us!”

All That Remains at Mayhem: Interview with Jeanne Sagan

All That Remains
Rockstar Mayhem 2009 – San Bernadino, CA
Jaeger Stage

All That Remains Rockstar Mayhem 2009 - San Bernadino, CA 7/12/2009 Jaeger Stage

Mayhem came and took over the San Bernadino Valley last Sunday. I walked into the park knowing that this was heavy metal grounds; heavy metal flourishes here and I haven’t heard of a band that has had a bad turn out. This is also the site for the now infamous egging of Iron Maiden back on Ozzfest in 2005.

All That Remains hits the Jaeger Stage at Mayhem in Support of their newest album Overcome. Today everyone appears to be like kids on their first day of school, a bit nervous but ready to go.

We caught up with Jeanne Sagan of All That Remains to talk about life on the road, coming into the band, and life at Mayhem.

Jessica: You played on All That Remains’ last album correct?

Jeanne: I did. I recorded the last two albums Fall of Ideals and Overcome.  I am the resident bass player.

Jessica: How long have you been in the band?

All That Remains Rockstar Mayhem 2009 - San Bernadino, CA 7/12/2009 Jaeger StageJeanne:  I’ve known the band as long as they have been the band. Our bands played a lot of shows together so I’ve known Mike from about ‘98/’99. Where we come from the music scene is so close knit. Killswitch came from our area, Shadows Fall, Unearth; a lot of bands were out and about touring that were all from the same scene. Everyone kind of knows everyone. That’s how I got into the band.

Jessica: What’s the biggest change you’ve seen from the band as once and outsider and now an insider?

Jeanne:  Oh man, I’ve never went on tour before so my entire world changed. Going to see the band then to be onstage is insane. A lot of my friends always wondered what it was like and now I am on a bus and touring.

Jessica: Is it nerve racking?

Jeanne: Not anymore. I was a little nervous the first day trying to get the drummer configured and all that. There is the first day jitters like the first day of school. Once you get your curriculum you are all set.

Jessica: I think you are the only female on the tour.

Jeanne: Yeah, I am the only one that’s in a band. I am the only one that actually gets to be onstage.

Jessica: It’s 3 days into Mayhem, how is it treating you?

Jeanne: Before we even got to this tour our drummer hurt his hand when we were in Europe.  We have a fill-in drummer with us now, and today is his third show with us. That to start off with made it a little nerve racking, but we’ve been looking forward to this tour all year.  It wasn’t going to stop us.

Jessica: Poor Jason, what is he doing?

Jeanne: He’s doing good. He’s at home in Boston probably crying himself to sleep. (laughs)  He has several more appointments. We hope he can come out and play with on this tour because I know it would mean a lot to him.

Jessica: What has been the biggest setback the band has faced?

Jeanne: Right now, I would have to say it is Jason. Things are going so well with the new album. We get amazing tour responses and get offered great tours.  Right now we are riding pretty high up.

Jessica: Where is your favorite place to play?

Jeanne: Wow, we went all over the place this year.  There were a lot of new experiences I’ve never been in and places we haven’t played in a long time. We went to Japan for our first real tour over there. We went to Scandinavia and we played a show in Moscow also. There are so many I can’t pick just one.  I love Finland. It’s probably one of my new favorite places.

Jessica:  The biggest highlight for the band?

Jeanne: Playing in Sweden.  It was one of the most defining moments.

Jessica: Are you writing new material on the road?

Jeanne No, we are still flying high on the new album. It came out in September and now we have our second song on the radio. We are trying to get to as many places as possible.

Jessica:  What is a fun fact about you or the band that we may not know?

Jeanne: Ummm…we are a bunch of nerds! Jason plays World of Warcraft. Mike really likes sports and Phil likes Halo and he’s the internet guy–the Twitter and Facebook. He’s very nerdy like that. I read books and I like science a lot. You don’t have to be really cool.

Trivium’s Corey Beaulieu Talks Mayhem, Madden, and Shitzus

Rockstar Mayhem 2009
San Bernadino, CA

Trivium Mayhem 2009 4

Trivium is currently gracing the second stage at Mayhem in 2009. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Corey Beaulieu to discuss all things Mayhem, Madden, and Shitzu’s.

Jessica: You are three days into Mayhem. How has it been treating you?

Corey Beaulieu : The most fun we’ve had on a summer tour in a long time. The first show we had a train wreck because our bass player couldn’t make it out to the first show. We didn’t have my guitar tech so we had loads of stuff breaking and everything that could possibly go wrong in a 30 minute time span did.  We worked through it and most people seemed to enjoy it. When stuff goes wrong we usually just improve and roll with it instead of getting pissed off and stopping. One time Matt’s guitar went out for half a song. He was trying to get it fixed so we got everybody to sing the song. Yesterday was great with no problems. We got the train back on track.

At Rockstar Mayhem…So Far…

At Rockstar Mayhem here in San Bernadino, California, and it’s already insane! There has been a schedule change on the media end as well as for all the fans. They have pushed up everyone’s set by 25 minutes! That is just a little FYI for everybody that is attending.

Just finished my interview with Corey Beaulier from Trivium.  Some highlights so far…their first stop on Mayhem the drummer didn’t make it to the show as well as their guitar tech. Of course, if it could go wrong it did! He said it was still great because it was impromptu by then. Also, there may not be a meet-and-greet with these guys today, but they have tomorrow off and are trying to work something out. We’ll have photos and the interview up in the next couple days.

Also we had a member of Cannibal Corpse who said, “I think I could solve world peace if I could get every person in the world onstage to know what if feels like to have the crowd roar for you.”

Just finished interviewing Jeanne from All That Remains….

More to come..I need food and drink!!

Rockstar Mayhem Festival logoThe festival will tear through 27 cities in the U.S. and Canada. Mayhem tickets will go on sale to the public on April 24-check and for more info.

Like last year’s Godzillian-sized lineup, the second annual Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival will feature a gaggle of rock’s heaviest bands: the main stage will see Marilyn Manson and Slayer joined by BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and a special guest that will be announced in the coming weeks; the Jägermeister stage will feature TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, GOD FORBID and the Jägermeister Battle of the Bands winner; the Hot Topic stage will feature extreme metal bands CANNIBAL CORPSE, JOB FOR A COWBOY, BEHEMOTH, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and WHITECHAPEL. The World’s Greatest Freestyle Motocross team METAL MULISHA will also be revving up the crowd with their unique style of death-defying motorcycle stunts on all dates.

“Given the great success of last year’s festival, we knew that we needed to put together a stellar group of talent for 2009-and we have,” says Mayhem producers John Reese and Kevin Lyman. “This will be a blockbuster event, one that blends thrilling live performances with special music-related events and a few yet-to-be-revealed surprises. The result is a concert experience like no other. We’re extremely excited to get the show on the road.”

“Last year’s inaugural Mayhem Festival tour was a definitive success, attracting nearly 340,000 incremental fans to our amphitheaters,” said Jason Garner, Chief Executive Officer of Global Music at Live Nation, the tour’s co-producer.  “This year, the Mayhem team has delivered another great all-star lineup and we anticipate another huge success for Mayhem.”

“I have good news and I have bad news to announce,” declares Manson. “The good news is that I am completely aware now that our music and our Mayhem tour will have a negative, destructive influence on America.  The bad news is that I don’t give a fuck.”

Manson is currently in the studio working on his forthcoming album scheduled for release in May on Interscope Records. This highly anticipated record reunites Manson and Twiggy Ramirez for their first collaboration since Hollywood in 2001.

Summer 2009 will also see a brand new album from the mighty Slayer, who have already recorded three new songs and are slated to return to the studio in February to finish.  Late last fall, Slayer made one of the new tracks, “Psychopathy Red,” available as a free online stream to fans, and to date, the song has been posted online at more than one million sites.
