Gigantour draws Lilliputian crowd in Chicago

Megadeth / Black Label Society / Device / Hellyeah / Newsted / Death Division – 2013 Gigantour
Allstate Arena – Rosemont, IL

Megadeth - 2013 Gigantour

Gigantour has been a heavy metal mainstay since 2005. The brainchild of Dave Mustaine, Megadeth’s frontman, has always featured solid lineups, the current incarnation included. Why then, did only 1200 fans show up for the Chicago date when the tour pulled into Allstate Arena on June 9? Megadeth, Black Label Society, Device, Hellyeah, Newsted and Death Division seemed all but certain to draw a crowd similar to last year’s show at the Aragon Ballroom.

High school teens are the main demographic for the tour, not exclusively but definitely the primary source of ticket sales. Moving the show outside of downtown Chicago to the only venue that is not equipped with easy metro or rail access was a huge mistake, especially for a weeknight show. By the time Death Division hit the stage at 4:20 p.m., there were about 150 fans that had trickled into the arena. When hometown figurehead David Draiman played with Device at 7 p.m. that number had risen to maybe 700 people.

Those that did show up were not able to generate much energy during the earlier sets, something metal bands thrive on for their live performances. Hellyeah did get a couple mosh pits rolling, vocalist Chad Gray did his best to work the crowd. Regardless of the crowd size, each band sounded great and put forth an enthusiastic set. Openers Death Division are worth checking out and played with ferocity, if you’ve got tickets to an upcoming show, definitely get there early.

Newsted’s new outfit came to rock and did just that. The former Metallica bassist has recruited Staind’s Mike Mushok on guitar alongside Jessie Farnsworth and drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. Together they thrashed through new music with that classic hard metal sound that harks back to his days with Flotsam and Jetsam. Newsted is still a beast on the bass, though he did switch to guitar for one song, “Skyscraper,” while Mendez took over bass duty. They also tossed in Metallica’s “Whiplash” for good measure.

Device had a couple of surprises during their set. The three-piece had gelled as a live unit, definitely a more cohesive sound since their set during Carolina Rebellion earlier in the year. Dope’s Virus and Evanescence’s Will Hunt tour with Draiman on guitar and drums, respectively. It was only a matter of time before they hit their stride live.  Draiman’s voice was strong and he commanded the stage like an emperor. The band was joined by John DeServio of BLS on bass during “A Part of Me,” then later guitarist Geno Lenardo performed for the second half of the set. Filter’s Lenardo was responsible for the spark behind Device’s creation, and the studio guitarist for the album.

Draiman did a great job representing Chicago. Obvious that some fans weren’t into the spirit, he admonished a couple girls along the rail for not participating in the show. First he reminded them, “The United Center has a show down the road tonight, maybe you should be at the Justin Bieber concert.” Next, he brought up a young fan onto the stage who was obviously having a good time. Draimain said, “This is how you rock, she is singing all the songs and is even wearing the goods.” He asked her if she goes to concerts regularly and her response was, “This is my first concert,” then flashed horns to the crowd.

Both Black Label Society and Megadeth performed to the largest crowd. Many fans were there for Zakk Wylde’s band, sporting BLS vests and loving every minute of Wylde’s fretwork. Their hour-long set was long enough for the guitar aficionado to erupt into some lengthy solos. Megadeth hit the stage at 9:00 p.m. for  a 90-minute set that culled some songs from their latest album, “Super Collider,” but also went deep into their earlier material with “Peace Sells,” “Holy Wars…” and “Symphony of Destruction.”

The tour returns to the area next week with a show at The Rave in Milwaukee, tickets are still available.

Shuteye is award-winning singer-songwriter Elysia Hang-fu and veteran DJ/Producer Alena Ratner. Before finding one another both artists spent several years writing music and lyrics of their own. They blended their art into a unique electronic sound that became Shuteye. This Chicago duo brings their own sound that truly is emotionally electrifying! I have to say Kidzapalooza made me sad I didn’t bring my little one this year. Especially since kids 10 and under are FREE!  Kidzapalooza doesn’t only have their own stage and kidz store, they also have interactive play areas to keep your little ones entertained. First I ran into the Q Brothers who were teaching kids how to beat box and rap. It was great listening to kids rap about their favorite colors, foods and animals. Little ones even got to take home a copy of their phat tracks! Next I ran into Lifeway Kefir who had stationary bikes out for kids to ride and a table full of prizes. They were also helping the tikes beat the heat with free popsicles. Rock Star Video Karaoke had kids dancing up a storm in front of green screens singing and dancing to their favorite tunes. offsprings were transformed into rock stars by getting to play their own instruments in the Drumzone. You can’t be a rock star without the right look. No worries! Your rock star in training is able to get glammed with spray on hair-dye from the Punk Hairdoz tent and tatted up with paint on tattoos from the Tattooz tent and really what’s a festival without Tattooz!?

Words can’t even describe how amazed I was by the Chicago Ultimate Tumblers. They awed everyone in Kidzapalooza with their ultimate acrobatic moves! Tumblers jumped off of trampolines leaping over other members of the group and volunteers from the crowd. Some tumblers soared over 17 people! It is definitely a sight to see. I suggest catching them anytime you can! President Orpheus R Floyd says the goal of the CUT is to provide positive after school activity and to focus on mentoring, tutoring and self esteem building. The CUT doesn’t only compete in city-wide competitions; they were also on Season 6 of “America’s Got Talent” and have performed at the White House.

Coping with the Heat at Lollapalooza

xrt misting tentLollapalooza started yesterday to a packed crowd and high heat and full sun.  To say it’s hot outside is an understatement.  When patrons pay big money to spend 3 days out in the heat enjoying their favorite artists there has to be a way to cool down.

Having Lollapalooza in Grant Park makes a great location for a festival with great views such as Lake Michigan and Buckingham Fountain, but one drawback is all the concrete that collects all the rays of the sun and lack of trees to escape from it.  Need to find shade? Here’s where to find it and places to avoid.

The Red Bull Soundstage and stages on the north end of the park were good for keeping down the heat due to the fact there was grass and not concrete. It made all the difference especially as the midday and early afternoon hit.

The BMI stage is the best to escape the sun! The stage is nuzzled between a set of trees where many people came to cool down and may not have even known the artist.

The worst stage to be in for the heat was the Playstation stage in the afternoon.  Yesterday during Die Antwoord’s set, there was a handful of us that walked away to find shade as balls of sweat were rolling off our head and back.  It wasn’t pretty.  The good part was, even when finding shade, we could still hear Die Antwoord’s set.

cta cooling bus lollapalooza

The CTA supplies buses around the park for cooling stations.  Yesterday those buses were packed!  Chicago radio station, WRT supplied a misting station for people to stand in or run through.

Forget sun block? No problem! American Family Insurance was around to give out sun block, ear plugs, and hand sanitizer.

Headed downtown today? Don’t forget to dress cool, but sandals are a no-no! Against the steamy concrete, the flip flops will burn your feet!

The Lollapalooza Lowdown!

coldplay lollapaloozaLollapalooza starts tomorrow and we have the lowdown!

2012 tickets sold out in records time, 71 days prior to the event, but those who didn’t score the coveted tickets can stream the show at http://youtube.com/lollapalooza. Live streams and interviews will be available for Jack White, AVICII, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Ocean, The Shins, Florence + The Machine, and more.

Something cool this year is the stand-alone LollaShop.  The Shop is open to the public through August 6th and has Lollapalooza merchandise and merch from Sony, Goorlin Bros. Hats, Baggu plus many more.  The LollaShop is located Thompson Hotel and the Lounge will host events and artist appearances, and yoga.  Make sure to reserve a spot by RSVPing at http://do312.com/lollashop.

When there is just too much to carry, State Farm is providing a bag check. This is free and located west of Buckingham Fountain.

Lolla + Instagram + Free WIFI

This year Lollapalooza is having bands and fans Instagram photos showing up on the jumbotron around the stages.  Remember to tag all Lollapalooza photos this weekend in Instagram with #lolla.  Don’t use Instagram? iPhone and Android photos also show up in the Lollapalooza mobile app that is available for free on Google Play and iTunes.

To assist in uploading all those Instagram photos, Lolla is providing FREE WIFI around the park.  There will be hotspots near Buckingham Fountain, Lederhosen’s Biergarten, Uncorked Win Lounge, all Lolla Lounges, and more.  The network to select is “2012 Lolla.”

What’s Allowed and Not Allowed in the Park

Since it’s been hot around Chicago and the Midwest, festivals such and Summerfest and now Lollapalooza are allowing patrons to bring in 2 SEALED bottles into the festival.  Also allowed is an empty, refillable bottle.  There will be commemorative CamelBak water bottles and packs at merch booths.  The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic containers in the park with partners Boxed Water and Vita Coco Coconut Water.

Along with the sealed bottles the following items are ALLOWED at Lollapalooza:

Blankets, Sheets, Towels

Umbrellas (ONLY Hand-Held)

Soft-Sided Coolers

The FOOD

For the newcomers to Lolla the food is plentiful and diverse.  Chef Graham Elliot returned as the Culinary Ambassador to oversee the food is top notch.

Not everyone eats meat and besides having some great choices from food vendors, there is also the return of the Farmers Market. The Farmers Market will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free patrons.

Activities

Lollapalooza started with showcasing music, but today Lollapalooza has much more to experience than just music.

Green Workshops

In conjunction with the Farmers Market, there will be brief urban gardening workshops provided by Compass Green. These workshops support education in low-income schools.  These workshops are at the south end of Green Street each day of Lolla at 1p.m.

Kidzapalooza

For those who are bringing the kids along there is Kidzapalooza.  Kids 10 and under enter the festival within Lolla for free.  It has its own stage and interactive games from Rock Star Video Karaoke to hip-hop workshops with the Q Brothers.
